The deadline for filing for the 2017 general election was noon today, and there will be no primary in Ellis County.

The general election will be Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Oct. 17 is the last day to register to vote in the general election.

Ellis County residents can register at the Ellis County Clerk’s office at 718 Main St., Hays. A complete list of registration sites can be found by clickin g here.
For the Hays City Commission,
Dustin Glen Roths made a last-minute filing today with Sandra Jacobs; Shaun Musil, current mayor; Roger Agnew; John Mayers; and Christopher S. Dinkel also on the ballot.

The top two voter getters in this race will receive four-year terms, and the third vote getter will receive a two-year term.

For Hays USD 489, Sophia Rose Young rounded out the board filings with Michael S. Walker and current board president Lance Bickle also on the ballot. Three positions are open in that race.

Other filers this morning included, Dena Patee for Ellis mayor; Holly Aschenbrenner, Brian Raub and Martin V. LaBarge for Ellis City Council; Zach Kazenbach for Victoria City Council; and Mike Gaschler, Vic Winter and Brian Fischer for Ellis USD 388.

There were no filings for Schoenchen mayor or city council.

Helen S. Chase

Cedar, Kanas, resident, Helen S. Chase, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2017 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas, at the age of 85.

She was born June 14, 1931 in Osborne, Kansas, the daughter of Nathan and Miriem (Hersey) Muck.

Her husband, George, and daughter, Cecelia, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter, Cammie Townley, of Ellis, Kansas; five brothers: Frank Muck, Jim Muck, David Horning, and Gene Castel, all of Gaylord, Kansas, and Karl Zimmerman of Tecumseh, Kansas; four sisters: Hazel Nichols of Smith Center; Lily Wilcoxson of Derby, Kansas; Frances Muck of Garden City, Kansas; and Doris Dice; along with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Ronnie Wilcoxson officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedar Cemetery, Cedar, Kansas.

Mrs. Chase will lie in-state on Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, from noon to 9 p.m. both days at the funeral home.

Margaret L. “Maggie” Sander

Margaret L. “Maggie” Sander, 61, of Mifflintown, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at her home.

She was born December 8, 1955, in Russell, Kansas.

She is survived by her husband, James F. “Jim” Sander, whom she married June 9, 1973, one daughter, Michele Rapp and husband, Josh, of McClure, one son, Michael Sander of Ryde, four grandchildren, Edwin J. Sander, Ethan Rapp, Zane Rapp, and Jed Phelan, two brothers and one sister.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joe Hall, her mother, Betty (Shaw) Hall, her step-mother, Lucille Hall, and two brothers.

Maggie started as a teller at Russell National Bank in Lewistown, was promoted to manager of the Omega Bank branches in Reedsville and in Burnham, and retired as manager at the First National Bank of PA in the Mifflin branch.

She belonged to St. Jude Catholic Church, Mifflintown.

She was a member of the case club at Buddy Boy Winery, Duncannon and enjoyed crafting. She gardened and created a special memorial rose garden for members of her family. Her family was the center of her universe and there was nothing that she wouldn’t do for them. She will be remembered as a generous and loving person.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 2, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, 3918 William Penn Highway, Mifflintown with the Rev. William Weary officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the March of Dimes, 3544 N. Progress Ave. #204, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Emery S. Robertson Jr. age 92, a retired United States Army Colonel passed away on September 20, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jean Louise (Oelke) Aumiller

Jean Louise (Oelke) Aumiller, originally of Hoxie, Kansas, passed away on May 29, 2017 at the Hays Medical Center ICU in Hays, Kansas. Jean was born on December 6, 1948, the third child of George Ludwig and Ferma Jean (Fox) Oelke on the W.A. Oelke Farm. She was baptized when she was born and became a child of God, believing in the Holy Bible and Christian way of life.

Jean attended the country school located near the family farm, transferring to Hoxie Grade School. There she was an active member of 4-H doing projects like sewing, cooking, and woodworking all while helping with routine chores on the farm. Jean did not graduate from Hoxie High School. Instead, at an early age, she elected to join the Job Corps and received her G.E.D. at Marquette, Michigan. She aspired to become an architect, but fell just short of her degree. She returned to Hoxie with her unborn son, which she named Robert Gene Oelke.

Jean met, fell in love, and married Winslow Audell Aumiller on March 8, 1969. Unto this union, George Glenn Aumiller was born bearing the names of both Grandpas. Upon her death, Jean and Elery were married on earth over 48 years. As husband and wife, they instilled the values of a hard work ethic, importance of family and belief in God in both sons.

As we look back and remember Jean, there are many words that come to mind like: smiling, caring, humble, honest, grateful, nurturing and compassionate. The common thread that ties all these words together can be summarized in one “heart.” Jean was gifted. Her heart did not know immorality. How many times have we said or heard another say “that woman has the biggest heart”; “she is just the sweetest person” or “Jean will do anything for anyone.” As we remember and think of Jean today, let us do as she would do, reach out to each other in kindness from our heart(s).

Jean is survived by her husband Winslow “Elery” Aumiller of Russell, Kansas; sons, Robert Gene Oelke and wife Sandy of Russell, and George Glenn Aumiller of Wakeeney; brothers, William Oelke, Louis Oelke and wife Deborah all of Emporia, Bruce Oelke and wife Gloria of Garner, North Carolina; sisters, Linda Schoenthaler and husband Kenneth of Ogallah; grandchildren, Jessica (Oelke) Clayton and husband Ray, Gabriel Allen, Travis Allen and Kristina Allen; great-grandchildren, Malik and Mikah Clayton, Anthony and Brantley Allen; and brother-in law, John Harward.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George L. and Ferma Jean Oelke, and sisters, Thresa Mong, Lorrane Harward, and Minnie Mong.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Hoxie, Kansas. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday June 2, 2017 at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie. There will be a private family burial. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Jean L. Driver retires after almost 65,000 pizza deliveries

Dave Schmidt, delivery driver for Pizza Hut is retiring after more than 22 years and almost 65,000 deliveries.

Dave Schmidt is finally hanging up his Pizza Hut uniform today after more than 22 years as a delivery driver.

Dave, 67, has kept a journal of the number of deliveries he has made and miles he has logged during his career.

As of Monday at his surprise retirement party, he said he was bout 300 deliveries away from 65,000 career deliveries in Hays.

He has logged more than 200,000 miles on 11 different vehicles. He said he bought inexpensive vehicles and drove them until they broke down. The stop-and-go driving was very hard on transmissions.

He has been on every street and in every corner of the city, and, chances are, he probably has delivered a pizza to you.

Dave started delivering pizzas as a temporary way to earn a little extra money. His son had to have knee surgery, and he needed some extra cash to pay off the bill.

The bill was paid off and then another bill came up and another, so he kept delivering pizzas.

He worked full-time at Enerys during the day and then delivered pizzas at night.

Kevin Pfeifer, Dave’s former manager, said Dave was the best driver he ever had and he quickly assigned him as a trainer.

“He was fast, and he was good,” he said.

Pfeifer added, “He never stood still. When he wasn’t delivering pizzas, he was cleaning. He was a hardworking, dependable guy.”

Allisa Bohrer, Dave’s current manager, also had praise for him.

“He is super dependable and reliable,” she said. “He never gets lost.”

The pizza industry tends to have a high turn-over rate. Not many employees can mark more than two decades. Bohrer said the driver with the next longest tenure at her store has been there five years.

His supervisors said Dave’s customers never had complaints, and Dave said he enjoyed meeting all the people in Hays.

He has had many repeat customers over the years and is now delivering pizzas to adults whose families he delivered pizzas when they were children. Some customers even ask for Dave by name.

The bills are coming a little less fast and furious, so Dave has decided to end his delivery career. He has two acres in the country and plans to plant a big garden and work on various projects.

Bohrer said Dave will be missed.

“That is why we wanted to do this [party] for him,” she said. “He deserves some recognition.”

John LeRue Klinge

Lifelong Sharon Springs, Kansas resident John LeRue Klinge, 34, passed away at home south of Sharon Springs on Saturday, May 27, 2017.

John was born on March 22, 1983 in Tribune, Kansas, the son of Dave and Kay Klinge. He was the second of four children.

John attended Sharon Springs Elementary School and graduated from Wallace County High School in 2001. He then went on to take Ranch Management courses at a ranching school in Texas. John spent his career working as a ranch hand for the Wilson Ranch, the Sweat Ranch and as ranch manager at the Turkey Creek Ranch.

He enjoyed hunting, working cattle and spending time with family. John was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Sharon Springs.

Preceding him in death were his maternal grandparents, LeRue and Betty Pilger.

He is survived by his parents Dave and Kay Klinge, three sisters; Jennie Klinge of Goodland, Kansas, JoAnna Sommerfeld, husband Tyson and their son Luke of Surprise, Arizona, and Jayne Klinge of Blue Rapids, Kansas. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Graveside services will be on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 10 a.m. MT at the Dinas Community Cemetery with Reverend Paul McNall officiating.

Memorials may be designated to the John Klinge Memorial Fund and may be left at the service or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

LETTER: Dinkel announces run for city commission

Frustrated? Run for Office.

In the weeks leading up to and in the weeks following the failed school bond election last year, I heard time and time again that Hays citizens didn’t trust the school board or district leadership. It’s a common issue that affects every level of governance, and honestly, the mistrust is often well-earned. (Who trusts Washington or Topeka anymore?) However, we each have the opportunity to affect change. If you’re frustrated, run for office.

To some extent, it is simply in vogue to complain about government. We like to feel as if we could do better than anyone representing us, but we need to be willing to involve ourselves in governmental decisions when we have the chance and find out if we could actually do better or not.

There are currently two people running for three open seats on the USD 489 school board, and it looks like most local elections in the area are in a similar state. Considering the number of people who have expressed their discontent with the Hays school district, I’m surprised and disappointed that we don’t have a dozen Hays citizens running for those three open seats, but we don’t.

This is a problem for several reasons.

First, civic engagement is the bedrock of western civilization, and that starts on the local level. Not every person running for office needs to have presidential aspirations, but if you want to see positive change in your local community, you have the opportunity.

Second, if nobody runs, then we end up scraping the bottom of the barrel for leadership for our towns, school districts and counties. This isn’t to say that the people running for these positions aren’t qualified or excellent choices, but we need choices before we can choose. In my opinion, no representative should ever run unopposed. If they do, they have the license to decide whatever they want with no accountability to their constituents.

Finally, dissenting voices that never run are never heard. Governing bodies with a balance of opinions are much more likely to arrive at good decisions than single-minded groups, and if you disagree with the direction of a particular governing body, the best way to change it is to become a part of it. Representatives are supposed to listen to their constituents, but if you disagree with your representative on every level, they will never implement your ideas no matter how many letters you send or editorials you write.

You don’t have to be frustrated to run for office, but if you are, there’s no reason not to run. You have a significant opportunity before you. Make the best of it.

All that said, I have had an ongoing internal debate whether I should run for school board or city commission, but I have finally decided to announce my candidacy for City Commission in Hays. Civic duty is driving my decision more than frustration, but I hope that my presence on the Commission will contribute to the positive direction that the City has been moving the past several years. I hope the citizens of Hays will support me in this venture, and I hope to be an agent of positive change in the City of Hays.

First Responder Barbecue set for Saturday

The fourth-annual First Responder Appreciation Barbecue will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3 at the Frontier Park East Shelter.

All active and retired first responders and their families from Ellis County are invited to attend the event, which is sponsored by local Knights of Columbus councils.

The Knights of Columbus provide both funding and volunteers for the event as a way to give back to the community.

Food will include, hamburgers, hot dogs, brats and other refreshments and will be served picnic style.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Activity Center.

Last year, the event drew between 300 and 400 people.

Donna Shull,78, died Sunday, May 29, 2017 at the Colby Health & Rehab — Colby, Kansas.

She was born July 28, 1938 in Oakley, Kansas.

She was a retired school teacher.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, on Oct. 9, 2003.

Survivors include sons, Mark Ellis of Ellis and Greg Ellis of Colby; and sister Velma Boyd of Monument, Kansas; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2017 at Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel, Colby. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 3 at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be at Beulah Cemetery in Colby.

Memorials may be made to NWKS Hospice, and donations can be made in care of the funeral chapel.
