Indian’s second half comeback falls short in Garden City

Hays High were on the road in Garden City on Friday night.  The game marked the third road trip in the first four weeks of the season for the Indians.

Garden City scored on four of their five, first half drives to build a 28-0 lead over the Hays.  Indian miscues set up the Buffaloes in excellent field position as quarterback Carlos Acosta scored on three rushing touchdowns and threw a 48 yard scoring pass.  Hays threw an interception, punted the ball on a three play drive, fumbled a kick off return, had a punt blocked and missed a field goal in the first half.

Highlights

 

Hays though would not go quietly.  The Indians forced a fumble on Garden City’s first drive of the second half.  Five plays later Palmer Hutchison hit Dylan Ruder for a 13 yard touchdown to make the score 28-7.  Garden City scored on their next drive after recovering an onside kick by the Indians to go back up 35-7.  Hays scored on their next drive on a 37 yard Hutchison run and after recovering another fumble, scored one play later when Willie Sennett caught a 32 yard pass to close the game down to 35-21.

The Indians then recovered an onside kick and scored twenty seconds in to the fourth quarter on a Hutchison seven yard run closing the gap down to 35-28.  After being shutout in the first half, Hays scored 28 points in 12:20 in the second half.

Hays forced Garden City to punt on their next two drives but threw an interception and lost the ball on downs.  Garden City took their final drive just 32 yards but ran 5:52 off the clock before losing the ball on downs at the six yard line.  Hays then drove to the Garden City 37 yard line but a hail mary landed incomplete for a 35-28 loss.

Hays High holds off Liberal to give Crough first win

Hays High played their first home game of 2018 Friday night hosting the Liberal Redskins.

Hays turned the ball over on three of their five first half possessions and Liberal punted on three of the six and lost the ball on downs once.  The result of the first two quarters was a tie at seven points a piece.

Liberal’s Jaylin Staten ripped off a 65 yard run to give the Redskins a 7-0 after picking off an Indian pass.  Hays responded on the next drive in the first quarter driving 81 yards on 9 plays which was capped off by a six yard Palmer Hutchison score.

Highlights

Liberal’s first drive of the second half was kept alive after Hays ran into the punter on 4th and 4.  Syris Dunlap took advantage with a 60 yard touchdown run for a Liberal 14-7 lead.

The Indians responded right back on a seven play seventy yard drive finished off by a second Hutchison score to even the game at 14.  The next Liberal drive ended when Tavian Creamer picked off the first pass of his career for Hays.  The Indians drove to midfield then on 4th and 2, Hutchison ran for 48 yards to the three yard line.  Hayden Brown punched in the go ahead run two plays later.  Cole Schroeder hit his third extra point of the night for a 21-14 lead.

The Indians recovered an uncovered kickoff on the next play but gave the ball back after four plays.  Liberal drove the field converting on third and fourth downs, scoring on a twelve yard pass from Dunlap to Lee Hatcher for a 21-20 score.  The score remained the same as Keaton Markley, a few plays after leaving with an injury, blocked the extra point.

Hays recovered the Liberal onside kick and with a first down took a 21-20 victory.

Hayden Brown ran for 151 yards and Palmer Hutchison for 157.  Hays moves to 1-2 on the year and is 1-1 in the WAC.  Liberal drops to 1-2 and 0-1.

Final pass falls incomplete as Hays loses in Great Bend

Statistically the Hays High Indians controlled the first half of their game in Great Bend on Friday night.  Hays went for 178 yards while allowing just 69 to the Panthers.  The score though had the Indians with just a one point lead at 7-6.  Nobody threatened to score until late in the first half.  Following Dalton Miller’s second interception of the half, the Panthers took a short field to the end zone.  A three play 44 yard drive was capped by a four yard run by quarterback Koy Brack.  The extra point was blocked by the Indians.

The score came with 2:41 left in the first half.  Hays scored just over a minute later.  After a touch back on the kickoff, Hays moved 80 yards in three plays.  Palmer Hutchison fended off a sack, reversed field and found Mason Ibarra behind the defense for a 49 yard touchdown.  Cole Schroeder’s extra point gave the Indians a 7-6 halftime lead.

Highlights

 

Great Bend added nine points in the second half.  Dalton Miller broke off a 46 yard run in the third quarter for a touchdown.  The score put the Panthers on top 12-7 after a two point conversion failed with 3:04 left in the quarter.  The Great Bend defense stifled the Indian offense for most of the second half allowing just 85 yards.

Great Bend pushed their lead to eight following a 25 yard field goal from Dani Franco for a 15-7 lead.  On the drive Great Bend converted on third and six, their only successful conversion of the night.  Hays also helped keep the drive alive by jumping offside on fourth and two.

Hays did get one last drive in an effort to tie the game.  The Indians converted on third and fifteen and fourth and ten to keep a last gasp of breath going.  The Indians drove to the 28 yard line and had one chance for a hail mary that sailed just wide.

Hays falls to 0-2 on the season and is 0-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Great Bend is now 2-0 and 1-0 in conference play.  Hays totaled 263 yards while Great Bend had 274.  The Panthers total included 205 yards in the second half, Hays had 85.

The Indians get play their first home game of the season when hosting 1-1 Liberal.  The Redskins lost to Wichita North 13-6.

Hays opens the season with a loss at Junction City

Hays High scored on their first drive of the season to take a 7-0 lead in Junction City on Friday night.  A back and forth half ensued with Blue Jays tying the game on their first drive of the season then taking the lead with thirty-eight seconds left in the first quarter 14-17.

Hays answered back with a 36 yard field goal from Cole Schroeder to close the gap down to 14-10.  The Indians then forced a punt and drove down to the Junction City three yard line.  A fumble was called late on the third down play at the goal line that gave the Blue Jays the ball back at the 20.  It took only five plays for the lead to swell to 21-10 following a Junction City touchdown with 3:38 left in the half.

Hays took over at their own 43, converted twice on fourth downs, the second resulted in a twenty yard scoring play by Palmer Hutchison.  The Schroeder extra point cut the deficit down to 21-17 at half time with Junction City still in the lead.

Highlights

Hays was out gained 303 to 122 in the second half and outscored 35 to 14, falling 56-31 to Junction City.  The Blue Jays scored on their opening possession of the second half then scored a little more than two minutes later after the Indians muffed the ensuing kickoff.

Hayden Brown sparked the Indians with a 75 yard kick off return for a touchdown to cut the score down to 35-24 with 8:26 left in the third quarter.  The Junction City offense was too much though as they outscore Hays 21-7 rest of the way.

Palmer Hutchison threw for 200 yards and ran for another 105 yards.  Hutchison scored twice on the ground and completed a touchdown pass to Willie Sennet.

Sophomore Russell Wilkey was as good as advertised for Junction City, running for 216 yards on 21 carries and scored two times.

Hays starts the season at 0-1 while Junction City moves to 1-0.  Hays will be on the road in Great Bend in week two.

Hays High to host Maroon and Gold Kickoff Classic

Hays High athletics will open the Maroon and Gold Kickoff Classic on Friday at Lewis Field Stadium to preview the 2018 fall sports.  The evening is sponsored by the Hays High Athletic Booster Clubs. The action will actually start at Hays High School as the volleyball team will scrimmage at 4:00.

Students and the public are invited to a meal from 6:00 to 8:30 on the west side of Lewis Field Stadium.  Hays High students will be fed free of charge.  A free will donation will allow everybody else to eat.

Soccer introductions will start at 6:40 and then scrimmage from 7:00 to 7:45 with the dance team performing midway through the scrimmage.  The band along with the volleyball, cross country, football, tennis, cheerleader and golf teams will all be introduced during the soccer scrimmage.

The football team will scrimmage at 8:00.

First week of practice for Hays High complete

Coach Tony Crough had his team at Lewis Field Stadium on a picture perfect Saturday morning to wrap up the first week of practice.  The Indians still have 70 plus players at practice each day are looking to have a separate group of players for each offense and defense.

The Indians will have practice next week which will included the Maroon and Gold Scrimmage on Friday night.

The first game of the season is August 31st in Junction City.

 

Hays High football holds first practice

The 2018 football season got under way on Monday as the Hays High Indians worked through a rain soaked afternoon before being chased of the field by lightning late in practice.  First year head coach Tony Crough had 74 in pads for the first practice.  Crough begins his fourth year total as a head coach.

Crough says the goal in this first week is to figure out who will play where within the schemes he has brought to the program.  The position the players are at over the first few days of practice may not be where they continue to play as the preseason moves along.  Crough is also in charge of the offense.  Former Fort Hays State football player Layton Hickel is the defensive coordinator.  Overall the program features ten coaches to help the team.

Hays makes a return to 5A as the smallest school in the classification.  The regular season has eight games on the schedule with the ninth week scheduled through the first round of the playoffs which each team qualifies for.  The Indians’ first game is August 31st in Junction City.

First day in full pads for FHSU Football

HAYS – The Fort Hays State football team dressed out in full pads for the first time in the 2018 season.  The defending MIAA champs will hold their first planned scrimmage on Saturday.  Coach Chris Brown expects to run 60-70 plays.  The scrimmage not only helps find the starters for the upcoming season, but according to Brown, it also helps find the depth they are looking for at all positions.

Brown has also been pleased with the way that the kids themselves have been managing the practices.

The Tigers open the season at Lewis Field Stadium on August 30th.  The Thursday night game will be against the University of Central Missouri.

Royals lose opener to Yankees as NY star gets injured

NEW YORK (AP) – Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was hit on his right wrist by a pitch and forced to leave early Thursday night, overshadowing New York’s 7-2 romp past the Kansas City Royals.

The Yankees said Judge was seen by a team doctor at the stadium and taken to a hospital for an MRI.  The Yankees said Judge had a chip fracture and that no surgery has been recommended.  The team estimated it would be about three weeks before Judge could swing the bat in a game.

Normally an All-Star outfielder, Judge was the designated hitter. He winced when he was stung by a fastball from Jakob Junis in the first inning, got an infield hit the next time up and then was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the fourth.

On a busy day for the Yankees, Sonny Gray (8-7) pitched five shutout innings to win three straight starts for the first time since last July. He exited soon after getting nicked in the pitching hand by a hard grounder.

Didi Gregorius hit a three-run homer for New York, which began the day 5 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Boston. Center fielder Aaron Hicks threw out Alex Gordon at the plate to end the game as Gordon tried to score from second on a single.

Before the game, the Yankees obtained Toronto left-hander J.A. Happ in a trade for infielder Brandon Drury and minor league outfielder Billy McKinney. Also, ace reliever Zach Britton tossed a perfect eighth inning in his New York debut, two days after being acquired from Baltimore for three pitching prospects.

There was a strange sighting, too. As Neil Walker batted with two outs in the Yankees seventh, several thousand fans in the sellout crowd suddenly switched on their cell phone lights and shined them toward the field. There was no instant explanation.

Junis (5-11) is 0-8 in 10 starts since beating the Yankees in mid-May. He has allowed a major league-high 25 home runs, and the drive by Gregorius made it 6-0 in the fourth.

Gregorius homered one pitch after shortstop Adalberto Mondesi bounced a throw to first on a routine grounder with two outs. As Gregorius rounded the bases, Mondesi took off his glove and wandered into shallow center field.

Royals: Rookie RHP Brad Keller (3-4, 3.20 ERA) starts on his 23rd birthday. He pitched a perfect inning in relief against the Yankees in mid-May.

Yankees: LHP CC Sabathia (6-4, 3.51) will start on 12 days’ rest. A rainout and the All-Star break resulted in the long break. He’ll pitch on his bobblehead night in the Bronx.

Royals fall to Detroit as Duffy struggles

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Mike Moustakas had two hits, including a run-scoring double, in what might have been his final home game for the Kansas City Royals, an 8-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

A key member of the Royals’ 2015 World Series championship team, Moustakas became a free agent after last season, then signed a one-year contract with the Royals in March that includes a mutual option for 2019. With the Royals last in the AL Central at 31-70, he could be dealt before Tuesday’s deadline for trades without waivers.

Jose Iglesias hit a three-run homer in a four-run fourth inning against Danny Duffy (6-9). Iglesias is 10 for 27 (.370) against Duffy in his big league career.

Victor Martinez had three hits, including a pair of RBI singles. He was 6 for 12 with five RBIs in the series and had consecutive games with multiple RBIs for the first time since July 17-18 last year, also at Kansas City.

Matthew Boyd (5-9) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings, striking out seven and walking none. He had been 0-5 in seven starts since winning at Boston on June 7.

Duffy (6-9) gave up seven runs, nine hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings and threw wild pitches that allowed John Hicks to score the go-ahead run in a four-run fourth and Iglesias to come home in the sixth.

RHP Jakob Junis (5-10) starts Thursday at the New York Yankees. He is 0-7 in nine starts since a May 18 victory over the Yankees.

Larks season finale rained out

The Hays Larks and Liberal Bee Jay’s did their best to dodge the rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday night at Larks Park but mother nature had other plans.  A deluge of rain simply put too much water on the field to play.  The game was the finale for both squads with the Larks wrapping up the Jayhawk League title more than a week prior.

Liberal had been informed they were invited to play in the NBC World Series during the first week of play and will begin their pool play on Friday in Wichita.

The Larks finish the regular season at 34-10 and 26-9 in Jayhawk League play.  Hays will be part of Championship Week at the NBC World Series starting in early August.  When the bracket is released we will update you on Hays Post and all the World Series games will be broadcast on KAYS.

Larks walk off in 16 innings versus Derby

The Hays Larks and Derby Twins played a 16 inning, instant classic game on Sunday night at Larks Park to end a four game series over three days.

Larks starter Tyler Blomster gave up two runs in the fourth inning on a solo home run and two out single.  Blomster rebounded to give Hays seven strong innings, striking out 11 and walking one batter.  RJ Williams drove in the Larks first two runs with two out singles in the fifth and seventh innings to tie the game at two.

Wyatt Divis worked around lead off batters in all but one of his six scoreless innings on the mound before giving way to closer Shane Browning who struck out six over three innings.  The Larks finally walked off after the games only error.  With two on and one out in the sixteenth inning, Williams hit a grounder towards the Twins shortstop who bobbled the grounder then threw wide of the first baseman allowing Matt Munoz to score from second and claim a 3-2 win.

Browning took his first win of the season for the Larks who won their 30th game of the summer and are 30-7 and now 22-6 in the Jayhawk League.  The Larks are five games ahead of Liberal who were rained out versus Great Bend on Sunday.

Hays Striders qualify for AAU National in 23 events

The Hays Striders Track and Field Club completed a successful showing at the AAU Region 16 Meet in Joplin, Missouri over the past weekend.  The team competed in 50 events with 23 of those earning a top six finish and the opportunity to compete at AAU Junior Olympic Games.

Each of the 50 entries had to qualify for the regional meet through the district meet held in El Dorado at the beginning of June.

The track meet featured 1800 athletes in a highly competitive meet held at Missouri Southern State University.  Region 16 is comprised of Arkansas, Oklahoma and the Missouri Valley district (which is made up of the west half of Missouri starting in Columbia and the entire state of Kansas.)

The AAU Junior Olympic Games will be held in Des Moines, Iowa this year at Drake University July 30th through August 4th.
