Fort Hays State remained No. 1 in the third release of the NCAA Super Region 3 Rankings, released on Monday (Nov. 6). The Tigers are No. 1 in the Super Region for the second straight week. FHSU is coming off a big win at Northwest Missouri State this past Saturday to remain undefeated, now at 10-0.

The Tigers are looking to make their first appearance in the NCAA Playoffs since 1995. FHSU has been in the NCAA Playoffs only twice in the program’s history, the other time being 1993.

The top four spots in the Super Region 3 rankings stayed the same from last week, with Indianapolis, Ashland and Ferris State holding steady at Nos. 2-4, respectively. Ouachita Baptist took advantage of losses from Northwest Missouri State and Grand Valley State by moving up two positions to the fifth spot in the ranking. NWMSU fell one spot to No. 6, with Arkansas Tech rounding out the top seven. Harding (No. 8), Grand Valley State (No. 9) and Central Missouri (No. 10) are currently on the outside looking into the playoff picture.

With FHSU currently holding the No. 1 ranking in the region, the Tigers are in position to potentially receive a bye past the first round of the playoffs. The No. 1 seeds in all four super regions receive first-round byes and await an opponent in the round of 16.

The playoffs begin with the first round on Saturday, November 18 and continue each week until the National Championship game is played on Saturday, December 16 in Kansas City, Kan. Should the Tigers obtain the No. 1 seed in Super Region 3, they would host their first playoff game on Saturday, November 25 and would host again on December 2 with a victory.

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State moved up to No. 5 in the latest AFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, released on Monday (Nov. 6). This marks the highest national ranking ever for Tiger Football in an official NCAA Division II poll, passing the No. 6 mark held last week and during the 1996 season. FHSU is coming off a thrilling win over two-time defending national champion Northwest Missouri State this past week to win the MIAA Championship.

The Tigers are one of ten teams in the Top 25 that remain among the ranks of the unbeaten. The top eight teams in the nation are all still undefeated. FHSU has defeated a pair of top 15 teams this season, defeating Central Missouri when it was No. 13 in Week 2, and last week defeating a No. 8 ranked Northwest Missouri State team. The Bearcats dropped down to No. 18 in the rankings this week.

Fort Hays State did receive four of the 34 first place votes submitted this week. Minnesota State remains No. 1 after receiving 21 first-place votes, while Shepherd (W.Va.) is No. 2 with seven first-place votes. Indiana (Pa.) checks in at No. 3 with two first-place votes, and Midwestern State (Texas) had just seven more voting points overall than FHSU to hold the No. 4 spot in the poll.

Five of the top seven teams in the Super Region 3 rankings are inside the top 20 of the AFCA Poll, led by FHSU at No. 5. Indianapolis is No. 6, Ashland (Ohio) is No. 10, Ferris State (Mich.) is No. 11, and Northwest Missouri State is No. 18. Ouachita Baptist, Grand Valley State, and Arkansas Tech are all receiving votes.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men’s Soccer already claimed at least a share of the MIAA Championship last Sunday (Oct. 29) with a 1-0 win over Lindenwood in Hays. That gave the Tigers a 7-1 mark in conference play for the season. Fort Hays State had to wait until Sunday (Nov. 5) to find out if it would share the title with Northeastern State or take it outright pending on the outcome of Northeastern State’s game at Lindenwood.

The Tigers will not have to share the title as Northeastern State fell to Lindenwood on Sunday evening, 1-0, in overtime. The RiverHawks finished MIAA play at 6-2 with the result.

The Tigers will find out their fate for the NCAA Tournament on Monday evening (Nov. 6) during the NCAA Men’s Soccer Selection Show at 5:30 pm on NCAA.com. The Tigers are seeking their sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and are in strong position after holding steady in the region rankings at No. 2 for three straight weeks. Northeastern State was No. 1 in all three releases of the rankings. The top two teams from the Central Region are selected to play in the NCAA Tournament. Fort Hays State has won the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament three consecutive years.

Fort Hays State aims for its first MIAA title in football on Saturday in Maryville, Missouri, in a matchup of Top 10 nationally ranked teams. The No. 6 ranked Tigers face No. 8 ranked Northwest Missouri State at Bearcat Stadium, beginning at 1:30 pm. FHSU enters at 9-0, looking to win the MIAA title outright, while NWMSU enters at 8-1 and looks to pull back into a tie for first with FHSU.

This game has plenty of storylines surrounding it and the biggest for FHSU is a chance to win the MIAA and hold on to the No. 1 ranking in Super Region 3. The Tigers vaulted to the No. 1 spot in the second release of the rankings thanks to a Northwest Missouri State loss at Pittsburg State last week. FHSU and Indianapolis are the only two teams in the Super Region that remain undefeated. The Tigers are playing for a potential bye in the opening round of the NCAA Playoffs and the right to host a home game.

Northwest Missouri State just had its 38-game win streak that dated back to the start of the 2015 season snapped last week at Pittsburg State in a 20-10 loss. NWMSU has not lost at home since 2014, which also happened to be to Pittsburg State on October 18 of that year. The Bearcats have won 23 straight at their home venue.

Fort Hays State looks to be the first team other than Northwest Missouri State to win the MIAA title outright since 2012. Missouri Western went 9-1 to win the title outright that season. Back then, Truman, Southwest Baptist, and Lincoln were still members of the conference in football. The Bearcats have won the MIAA crown five straight years, sharing it only once in 2014, when that aforementioned home loss to Pittsburg State led to a tie between those teams for the conference title at 10-1.

Now in its 12th year of membership with the MIAA, FHSU is on the brink of winning its first title in one of the most elite football conferences at the NCAA Division II level. It has been a long time coming for FHSU winning a conference title in football overall, 22 years in fact. The 1995 squad, members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at the time, was the last to do so, going 6-0-1 in conference play. This Tiger team, though, has to endure the grind of the MIAA schedule with the entire season comprised of conference games. This team may have to go a perfect 11-0 to attain the title outright, playing four more conference games than any previous FHSU conference championship team ever had to play to win a title. FHSU has seen 10 conference championship teams in its history and the 1993 and 1995 teams had to play the most conference games of any of those 10, both playing just seven.

This game will feature two of the top defenses in the country. The Bearcat defense is the nation’s best in terms of scoring defense and total defense. The Bearcats allow only 8.7 points per game and just 205.2 yards of total offense per game. NWMSU has shutout four teams this year, including three on its home field. Central Oklahoma is the only visiting team that has put points on the board this year in Maryville with 10, a game that NWMSU won 17-10.

The Tiger defense has been solid all year long, allowing just 14.8 points and 289 yards of total offense per game. FHSU ranks 11th nationally in scoring defense and 18th in total defense. They are second in the MIAA behind NWMSU in both categories.

The Tigers have had the more high-powered offense between the teams this year, producing 475.7 yards of total offense and 34.8 points per game. Northwest Missouri State is averaging 408.9 yards per game, but just 26.9 points per game. Three of Northwest Missouri State’s wins this year have been by seven or less points. The Bearcats did not score more than 24 points against any of the teams currently with a winning record in the MIAA. FHSU has put at least 31 points on the board against every team this year except for Pittsburg State, winning that game 21-17.

With both defenses very sound this season, mistakes could become the key to victory on Saturday. Both teams are +4 in turnover margin this season. NWMSU has gained 14 turnovers, while giving the ball away 10 times. FHSU has gained 16 turnovers, while giving the ball away 12 times. However, up until last week, NWMSU was +9 in the turnover department. The Bearcats threw four of their five interceptions for the season last week and turned the ball over an uncharacteristic six times at Pittsburg State.

Jacob Mezera is the signal caller for the Tiger offense. He is nearing the 5,000-yard passing mark for his career, now with 4,823 yards. He averages 252.2 yards passing per game. His top target has been Monterio Burchfield, who has 39 receptions for 823 yards this season. FHSU has four players with 300 or more receiving yards, so Mezera spreads the ball around nicely each game. Balancing the offensive attack on the ground is Kenneth Iheme, the MIAA’s top rusher at 114.3 yards per game. He is the first MIAA running back to break the 1,000-yard barrier this season, now with 1,029 yards. Complementing him in the backfield is Charles Tigner, who averages 73 yards rushing per game. The FHSU offense has produced 200 or more rushing yards in each of the last four weeks and five times this season overall.

Jose Delgado leads the Tiger defense with 76 tackles for the season. Nathan Shepherd leads the Tigers in sacks with four, often drawing double or triple team coverage from opposing offensive lines. In the secondary, Doyin Jibowu has four interceptions, while Kamon Clayton has a team-best 12 pass break-ups. As a team, FHSU has 20 sacks, seven interceptions, and 40 pass break-ups this season.

After 110 minutes and 14 shootout rounds, the FHSU women’s soccer team downed the Missouri Southern Lions to advance to their second-consecutive MIAA semifinal using PKs. The Tigers claimed an 11-10 shootout score to move on in the conference tournament and earned a chance to play No. 1 and undefeated Central Missouri on Friday in the conference semifinals. With the 0-0 tie, the Tigers now move to 10-5-4 overall, while the Lions end their season at 5-9-4.

The first half saw neither team gain an advantage as the Tigers and Lions held each other scoreless. The Tigers had the slight upper-hand in shots in the first 45 minutes as they outshot the Lions 5-4. The second half was much the same as regulation ended with the Tigers holding Missouri Southern to just three shots compared to their eight.

Throughout the two overtime periods, only four shots were taken, all from the feet of FHSU members. In total, the Tigers outshot the Lions 19-8 throughout the entirety of the match. The shot advantage would not be enough for a win as the match moved to PKs as a winner needed to be decided to advance in the MIAA tournament.

After 14 shootout rounds, giving both programs chances to out-shoot the other, the Tigers clawed their way to an 11-10 PK victory alongside their 0-0 tie. Missouri Southern seemed to have the momentum as they started out the PK sessions 2-1 over the Tigers. However, two-consecutive misses for the Lions allowed the Tigers to get on top 3-2. After both teams broke the 4-5 tie, they stayed even with each other matching made attempts. Kylie Thomas went to the line for the Tigers with the points tied at 10 a piece in the 14^th attempt. Thomas soared the ball left of Galindo to conclude the shootout and punch the Tigers’ ticket to the conference semifinals.

Jasmine Beaulieu led all players with a game-high six shots, followed by Darby Hirsch and Eden Stoddard with four attempts each. Glory Amalaha led the Lions with a team-high three shot attempts in the match. Luz Galindo for Missouri Southern and Kristen Thompson for Fort Hays State both took added a tie in their goalkeeping records for the season. Galindo added six saves to her name while ending her season with a 4-3-2 record and 55 saves. Thompson collected three saves and now owns a 6-3-2 record during her senior campaign along with 46 saves on the year.

Up next, the Tigers travel to Warrensburg, Mo., for a meeting with the No. 1 team in the land; Central Missouri. The Jennies have out-scored their opponents 69-2 on the year and boast a perfect 19-0 record. Previously this season, Fort Hays State fell to Central Missouri 2-0 in Hays. That matchup’s time has yet to be announced by the MIAA, but check back on FHSUAthletics.com for details of the match.

A 2-0 weekend helped the Fort Hays State men’s soccer team hold on to the second spot in the NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings, released Wednesday (Nov. 1). Conference rival Northeastern State maintained its top spot in the region after knocking off Oklahoma Baptist and Delta State last weekend.

In fact, all four spots remained the same, with Harding holding steady at No. 3 and Lindenwood clinging to the fourth spot in the ranking despite losing to the Tigers 1-0 on Sunday.

The top two teams in the Central Region will qualify for the NCAA Tournament and will travel to the home field of the top seed in the Midwest Region to vie for the regional title. The regional final will be played on either Thursday, November 16 or Friday, November 17, with the winner advancing to play the Midwest Region champion in the national quarterfinal that weekend. A win in that round means a trip to Kansas City, Mo. for the national semifinal, set to be played at Swope Soccer Village.

Fort Hays State is the three-time defending champion of the Central Region, earning a trip to the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament three years in a row.

The Fort Hays State football team jumped one spot to No. 7 this week in the D2Football.com poll, released late Monday (Oct. 31). It was the eighth consecutive week the Tigers have climbed in the media rankings.

The Tigers jumped Northwest Missouri State, who fell from No. 1 to No. 8 after losing to Pittsburg State Saturday. Fort Hays State will face off with the Bearcats this weekend in Maryville, Mo., with a chance to secure its first MIAA Championship. The Tigers and Bearcats are the only two MIAA representatives in this week’s poll.

Super Region 3 is well-represented in the poll, with six teams ranked in the top 13. Included in that mix is third-ranked Ashland, sixth-ranked Ferris State, FHSU,NWMSU, 10th-ranked Indianapolis and No. 13 Grand Valley State.

Two teams ranked in front of Fort Hays State have one loss in regional rivals Ashland and Ferris State. All 10 undefeated teams remaining in Division II are listed in the poll. Indiana (Pa.) tops the poll after being listed second last week.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State senior midfielder Derick Gonzalez has been named MIAA Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday (Oct. 31) by the league office. It is the second time this season Gonzalez has achieved the honor.

Gonzalez had another strong weekend for the Tigers, helping Fort Hays State clinch at least a share of its first MIAA Championship. The Houston, Texas native recorded one goal and two assists in Thursday’s (Oct. 26) 5-2 win over Upper Iowa before recording the assist on a fantastic touch pass, setting up the lone goal in Sunday’s (Oct. 29) 1-0 win against Lindenwood. Gonzalez has now recorded a point in 14 consecutive matches, extending his school record. He attempted six shots on the weekend, two of which were on goal.

The Tigers will wrap up the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 4) when the host the University of Mary. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Fort Hays State will celebrate Gonzalez and the other four seniors on this year’s team with a Senior Night ceremony.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State senior running back Kenneth Iheme has been named MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week, announced Monday by the league office (Oct. 30). It is the second time Iheme has earned the distinction this season, and the ninth time a Tiger has received a conference player of the week award this year, four more than any other school (Pittsburg State).

Iheme picked up 208 all-purpose yards in Saturday’s 34-7 win against Emporia State. The Wichita, Kan. native rushed for 146 yards, his fifth straight 100-yard performance on the ground, while grabbing seven catches for 62 yards and one touchdown. He averaged 7.3 yards per rush and 8.9 yards per catch, including a 54-yard burst with the Tigers backed up at their own 1-yard line and a 25-yard touchdown grab after making multiple Hornet defenders miss. Iheme now has 1,029 rushing yards through nine games this season, turning in the 20th 1000-yard season on the ground in FHSU history.

Safety Josh Hornback of Pittsburg State and linebacker Roc Robbins of Missouri Southern joined Iheme in earning MIAA Player of the Week honors for week nine.

The Tigers have now had honorees in eight of nine weeks this season, including Jacob Mezera (Week 1 Offensive Athlete of the Week), Brandon Brown (Weeks 1, 4, and 7 Special Teams Athlete of the Week), Nathan Shepherd (Week 2 Defensive Athlete of the Week), Monterio Burchfield (Week 3 Offensive Athlete of the Week), Jose Delgado (Week 5 Defensive Athlete of the Week), and Iheme (Weeks 6 and 9 Offensive Athlete of the Week).

Iheme will look to continue his strong season Saturday (Nov. 4) when the 6th-ranked Tigers head to Maryville, Mo. to face off with 8th-ranked Northwest Missouri State. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. inside Bearcat Stadium.

The second edition of the NCAA Super Region Rankings for football released on Monday (Oct. 30). At 9-0, Fort Hays State is now on top of Super Region 3 in the No. 1 position. The Super Region consists of four conferences, the MIAA, GLIAC, GLVC, and GAC.

The top seven teams in the Super Region are selected at the end of the regular season to compete in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Fort Hays State is seeking its first appearance in the playoffs since 1995.

Northwest Missouri State fell from the No. 1 position after having its 38-consecutive game win streak snapped that dated back to the start of the 2015 season. University of Indianapolis from the GLVC, the nation’s No. 5 ranked team, remained in the No. 2 spot, while Fort Hays State, ranked No. 6 nationally, made the leap from No. 3 to No. 1. Fort Hays State and Indianapolis are the only two teams that remain undefeated in the Super Region.

Ashland (8-1) and Ferris State (7-1) of the GLIAC moved up to No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. Ashland holds the upper hand between the teams by winning the head-to-head meeting. Northwest Missouri State (8-1) dropped to No. 5 following its loss to Pittsburg State. Grand Valley State moved up to No. 6, while Ouachita Baptist (7-2) of the GAC moved up into the No. 7 position.

Arkansas Tech (7-2), Central Missouri (6-3), and Harding (6-3) are on the outside looking in, sitting in the No. 8 through No. 10 positions.

The Fort Hays State at Northwest Missouri State game this Saturday (Nov. 4) in Maryville, Missouri, will have big implications not only just on a potential MIAA Championship, but also the NCAA Playoff picture.

The playoff format gives a bye to the Super Region’s #1 seed, while #2 plays #7, #3 plays #6, and #4 plays #5 in the opening round.

WACO, Texas – After breaking the program record for wins in a season this past Saturday and moving to 9-0 in the process, Fort Hays State moved up to No. 6 in the AFCA Division II Poll on Monday (Oct. 30).

The No. 6 ranking matches the best-ever for Fort Hays State in an official NCAA Division II Poll. The Tigers were No. 6 in the September 16, 1996 edition of the poll, produced by the NCAA Football Committee back then.

Former No. 1 Northwest Missouri State had its 38-game win streak snapped at the hands of Pittsburg State this past Saturday in Pittsburg, Kan. It allowed Fort Hays State to take over sole possession of the MIAA lead, but the teams will meet in a battle of Top 10 teams this Saturday in Maryville. FHSU will be attempting to grab the MIAA title outright, while NWMSU looks to pull back into a tie at the top of the standings with one more week in the regular season to follow.

Minnesota State takes over the No. 1 ranking this week, leaping No. 2 Shepherd (W.Va.) from the No. 3 ranking last week. Shepherd received more first-place votes, but overall Minnesota State had two more voting points. The top seven teams in the nation remain undefeated, while Northwest Missouri moved down to No. 8 this week.

After jumping back into the Top 25 last week for a second time this season, Central Missouri fell back out after a loss at Central Oklahoma. That leaves FHSU and NWMSU as the only two representatives from the MIAA in the Top 25. Other teams inside the Top 25 from last week’s Super Region 3 rankings include Indianapolis (No. 5), Ashland (No. 11), Ferris State (No. 12), and Grand Valley State (No. 19).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After ending the regular season with a 10-5-3 overall record and earning a 7-3-1 mark in MIAA play, the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team captured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming MIAA tournament. The Tigers drew No. 5 Missouri Southern for their first-round matchup, and will host the Lions at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Hays.

The Tigers have now advanced to post-season play in the MIAA for the fourth straight season. Last year, the squad earned a share of the conference title, while also advancing to the Sweet 16 in the National Tournament. In 2016’s conference tournament, the Tigers defeated Missouri Western in the first-round on PK’s, but fell to Central Oklahoma in the semifinals 4-2.

The Lions and Tigers met this season back on Oct. 15 with the match ended at a 0-0 tie after two overtimes. Missouri Southern is on a three-match win streak and brings a 5-9-3 overall record and 5-5-1 mark in MIAA to the tilt on Wednesday.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men’s Basketball had its first tune-up game for the regular season when it took on Kansas State on Sunday (Oct. 29). The Tigers fell by a score of 79-56 to the Wildcats. FHSU trailed by just seven at halftime before K-State pulled away in the second half.

Fort Hays State trailed 31-12 in the first half before going on a 10-0 run to get back in the game. The Tigers closed the first half on an 18-6 run to cut the halftime margin to just seven, 37-30.

FHSU scored the first basket of the second half to cut the K-State lead to five, but an 18-4 run pushed the Wildcats back out to a 19-point lead. KSU cruised the rest of the way and the final margin of 23 was its largest lead of the game.

Marcus Cooper led the Tigers with 15 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field and an 8-of-10 effort at the free-throw line. Brady Werth also reached double figures with 10 points. Hadley Gillum pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

Kansas State had four players in double figures. Xavier Sneed led the way with 18, followed by Dean Wade with 15, Barry Brown, Jr. with 14, and Cartier Diarra with 11.

The Tigers return to exhibition action at the University of Kansas on Tuesday, November 7 in Lawrence. Game time is set for 7 pm at Allen Fieldhouse.
