Jerry Lee Millard

Jerry Lee Millard, 69, of WaKeeney, Kansas passed away on September 22. Jerry was born January 24, 1950 to Jack and LaVanche Millard. Jerry was a graduate of Trego Community High School. He is survived in death by his son Jeremy and his wife Ashley and their son Hunter; daughter Megan (Mowery) and her husband Jason and their children Jessica, Kiera, Brylee, Taryn and Lucas; and niece Tara and husband John and great niece Oasis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy, his parents Jack and LaVanche, and brother Monty.

Jerry served in the Navy from 1969-72. He was stationed in Bermuda, Nantucket and Greenland, and attended Colby Community College after his discharge. Jerry joined his father in running the Western Kansas World in 1973. The newspaper in every sense of the word was his life. He worked in varying capacities as Editor and co-owner/President of the business until it sold in 2017. Jerry also served on the Board of Directors for First Federal Savings and Loan for several decades until the merger with Lyons Federal.

Jerry was a caring husband, father, and grandfather. His friends often mentioned how often and how fondly he spoke of his children, how proud he was of both Jeremy and Megan, and the love he had for Cathy. After Cathy passed Jerry spent time traveling, visiting friends, and tinkering on the farm. Jerry loved the outdoors, fishing, cooking, creating stained glass and wood working. He also spent many hours enjoying his pond. After retirement, his greatest joy was doting over his grandchildren, especially when they played at his pond. He enjoyed feeding them dessert before and after dinner, and exploring the farm with them. He would always go outside his comfort zone with them, whether it was dancing, searching for farm kittens, smiling about little handprints on the mirror, or scooping them up when his body really didn’t want to, he enjoyed every moment with his grandkids.

Jerry will be missed. He had a profound impact on so many folks over the years.

A memorial visitation will be October 1, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in WaKeeney. The family will hold a private graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Donations made to the hospital may be sent to Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th, WaKeeney, KS 67672.

Hays Oktoberfest releases full schedule

Members of the Hays Volga German Society, organizers of the Hays Oktoberfest, have released the full schedule for the newly extended event. The 47th Annual Volga German Oktoberfest will take place Friday, October 11 and Saturday, Oct. 12, in Municipal Park.

The mission of the Hays Oktoberfest is to celebrate the rich German heritage of Ellis County while generating scholarship money for students of Volga German descent and fundraising for area churches in need.

The NCK Tech Drive Thru will again feature German food made by NCK Tech Culinary Arts students. Menu items available for pick up include bierocks, green bean dumpling soup, and spitzbuben cookies. Patrons can order in advance by calling the main office at NCK Tech at 785-625-2437. Food can be picked up on Friday only at the drive-up window at the NCK Tech building directly across from Municipal Park.

Anyone interested in being a vendor at Saturday’s German Market should call the Downtown Hays Development Corporation at 785-621-4171. Vendor forms can be downloaded at www.DowntownHays.com on the Downtown Hays Market page under the Events section.

Gates will open at Municipal Park on Saturday at 10 a.m. with activities starting after the 11 a.m. Fort Hays State University Homecoming Parade ends. New this year, for-profit businesses and organizations will be allowed to set up on this second day, alongside non-profits.

Late registration for Oktoberfest vendors is available through Friday, October 4. Vendors can reserve a spot by calling vendor committee chair Lee Dobratz at 620-803-2258. Registration forms can be downloaded at www.haysoktoberfest.com.

KBI: 3 jailed for party fight facing charges in man’s death

DONIPHAN COUNTY– The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) confirmed that the man injured Sunday, Sept. 22, during a fight at a party in Doniphan County has died from his injuries.

According to a media release from the KBI, Jason W. Pantle, 42, of Cummings, died Saturday at the University of Kansas Medical Center where he was being treated for head injuries following an altercation with other party attendees. He was transported by a family member to a residence in the 1600 block of Jayhawk Dr., in Atchison, where police and EMS were called around 4:20 a.m. Sunday morning. The injured man was transported by EMS to a local Atchison hospital. He was later transferred to a Kansas City area hospital where he remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Then, on Wednesday evening, Sept. 25, KBI agents served several search warrants and arrest warrants connected to the case. At 6 p.m., 44-year-old Scott A. Vandeloo, of Atchison, was arrested at 1712 Prairie View Rd. in Platte City, Mo. He was arrested for aggravated battery, and booked into the Platte County Jail.

At approximately 7 p.m., 22-year-old Brian A. Spillman Jr., of Atchison, was arrested for aggravated battery after surrendering at the intersection of Mineral Point Rd. and Monument Rd. in rural Doniphan County. Then, at around 8:30 p.m., Matthew C. Scherer, 30, of Atchison, was arrested for aggravated battery when he surrendered at the Doniphan County Sheriff’s Office at 219 S. Main St. in Troy, Kan. Both Spillman and Scherer were booked into the Leavenworth County Jail.

Assisting in these arrests were the Atchison Police Department, the Doniphan County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Platte County Sheriff’s Office. The Doniphan County Attorney is expected to prosecute the case.

Flash flooding closing roads in northwest Missouri

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Flash flooding has closed several roads in northwest Missouri.

The Missouri Department of Transportation reports while much of northwest Missouri has seen chronic flooding and road closures throughout the spring and summer, flash flooding is closing more roads.

MoDOT says its crews are closely monitoring road conditions. Several sections of roadway in northwest Missouri have been closed due to high water.

MoDOT points out flash flooding can close a road quickly and it can be reopened on short notice once water recedes from the pavement.

Motorists are warned not to drive through water over the road. According to MoDOT, it takes only 6 inches of water to lose control of a vehicle and possibly get swept away from floodwaters.

Ellis Co. restaurant and lodging inspections, 9/23 – 9/29

Last week’s inspection results from the Kansas Department of Agriculture:

A&A Coors 823 8th St., Hays – Sept. 26

A routine inspection found no violations.

Total Convenience 106 West Main, Victoria – Sept. 26

A routine inspection found three violations.

  • On the table next to the cash register there was a hot dog rolling cooking unit that did not have a sneeze guard / protected guard present to prevent contamination of the food on the rollers. Three hot dogs were present on the rollers at time of inspection.
  • In the walk-in cooler, there were made in house breakfast burritos that had eggs and sausage with no dates of when they were made.
  • There was a plastic bucket in the kitchen area with a clear liquid and a towel present. The container was without a label.

Victoria High School 1107 10th St., Victoria – Sept. 26

An FDA contract inspection found one violation.

  • On the floor mixer arm, there was dried food residue present and the bucket stored directly under.

Early Childhood Connections 2501 East 13th St., Hays – Sept. 23

A follow-up inspection found no violations.

Mokas Coffee 1230 East 27th St., Hays – Sept. 23

A routine inspection found six violations.

  • Above the single door mini refrigerator, there is a prep table for coffee with an opened container of milk that was being stored. The temperature of the Milk was 57 F. All Other Cold Holding Temperatures are in compliance.
  • In the walk-in refrigerator, there were two containers of cut ham that had dates of 6/4/19 on both containers.  In the refrigerated display cooler, there were eight sections of assorted cheesecakes with no date of when they were opened.
  • In the two-door Traulsen refrigerator, there was an opened container of almond milk and organic milk with no dates of when they were opened.
  • On the storage rack in the back prep area, there was two of six food-grade plastic containers that had sticker residue present along the outside of the containers. All six containers were being stacked inside one another.  The electric food slicer was stored as clean had dried food residue present on the backside of the blade.
  • No paper towels or other hand drying provisions at the prep and line handwashing sinks.
  • In the chemical storage area, there was a spray bottle that held a blue liquid with no label on the container.

RG&G Investments 1130 East 41st St., Hays – Sept. 23

A routine inspection found two violations.

  • In the self-service creamer dispenser, there was a container of 1/2 and 1/2 with no date of when it was opened.
  • In the back storage area, there were five containers of liquid hand soaps being stored directly above an opened case of lids for soda containers. No evidence of leaking was observed.

Alphonse V. Weber

Alphonse V. Weber, age 84, of Ellis, Kansas passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Hays Medical Center. He was born December 29, 1934 in Ellis, Kansas to John and Patricia (Kozlowski) Weber. He married Victoria Romey on June 23, 1962 in Ellis.

Al had worked for Wiesner Grocery store in Ellis then began work in the oilfields as a driller for Dreiling Oil and several other oil companies until his retirement. He was a US Army veteran having served in Germany, a member of St. Mary’s Church, Ellis Knights of Columbus and served with the Ellis Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed all sports and outdoor activities including gardening and vacations. He was especially fond of the holidays and family time playing cards.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria of Ellis; a brother, Richard Weber and wife Janet of Ellis as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lawrence and Eugene Weber and two sisters, Agnes McGilvary and Cecilia Kinderknecht.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 PM – 8 PM Tuesday October 1, 2019 at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E 17th Ellis, KS 67637 with a combined parish vigil and rosary service will be at 7 PM.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Mary’s Church or St. Mary’s School.

Phillip Rupp

Phillip Rupp, 90, of Salina, passed away Friday, September 27, 2019. He was born September 13, 1929 in Grainfield, Ks.

U.S. Army Veteran, Phil served with the 780th field artillery from 1951 to 1953. He was discharged as a corporal. He enjoyed the outdoors doing activities such as camping, boating, fishing, and hunting with family and friends. Phil worked for Kings Construction Company for 33 years as a foreman, building bridges for our Kansas Highway. He was employed at Crestwood Cabinets till retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents Benedict and Anna (Kreutzer) Rupp; son Michael; brothers Marc, Theodore, Frank Rupp; sisters Ruby and MaryAnn.

Survivors include his wife Emily; daughters Lucinda Kohman, Phyllis (Loren) Berndt; sons Phillip and William Rupp; 6 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 29, 2019 3-6pm with Family at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 East Crawford, Salina.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 30, 2019 at 10:00am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 230 E. Cloud Salina, Ks 67401. Burial to follow in All Saints Catholic Cemetery.

Luelma Irene Hejny

Luelma Irene Hejny, 102, passed away September 28, 2019, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was the daughter of August & Helena (Unruh) Base, born on November 19, 1916, on a farm northwest of Pawnee Rock. She lived all her life in Barton County. She attended School District #48 and was a Pawnee Rock High School graduate of 1935.

She married Frank Hejny on May 22, 1938, in the New Jerusalem Church in Pawnee Rock. She was a member of the New Jerusalem Church, Ladies Service Alliance of the Church and a past President of the Gold and Silver Club.

Survivors include, many beloved nieces and nephews; and one special son of the heart. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank; son, Gary Dean; five brothers, Elmer, Leo, Everett, Vernon and Dan; and two sisters, Edith and Lavina.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 3, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Susan Galvan presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the New Jerusalem Church or the Great Bend Senior Center, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Update: Sheriff says there was no attempted child abduction

SALINE COUNTY —Investigators with the Saline County Sheriff’s Office have determined an incident Friday morning in rural Saline was not an attempted child abduction.

A newspaper carrier had gotten out of his car to put a newspaper in a box next to a drive Friday morning and gave a quick wave to an 11-year-old boy who had been waiting for a school bus, according to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

The boy ran off yelling and the man got back into his car and continued his rounds. The boy talked to the bus driver who then notified authorities.

The man talked to his wife later and told her of the incident. The wife of the newspaper carrier later heard the description of the man and his car in news reports and called the Sheriff’s Office.

The newspaper carrier had been following the school bus while making deliveries in the area. The Sheriff’s Office interviewed the man and determined there was no attempted abduction and closed the case.

2 indicted in shooting death of Kan. man driving stolen car

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Two Omaha residents face an involuntary manslaughter charge following a May shooting death of a Kansas man in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

A grand jury returned indictments against 25-year-old Jonathan Echtinaw and 23-year-old Carissa Lynn Kendall for the death of 18-year-old Ethan Edgar.

According to police, Edgar was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle parked in a gas station lot at South Main and 9th Avenue in Council Bluffs. Echtinaw and several others were looking for it.

Two individuals in separate vehicle confronted Edgar. They parked in front and back of the stolen car. When Edgar tried to ram the two vehicles, the driver of one of the vehicles fired a number of shots, hitting Edgar twice.

Police say Edgar drove from the scene with the other two giving chase. Kendall was driving the car during that chase.  Edgar lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of South Main and 5th Avenue and struck a tree. He died later at the hospital.

If convicted, Echtinaw and Kendall both face up to two years in prison. They are both scheduled for arraignment on Oct. 4 with a jury trial scheduled for Nov. 12.

Cletus Graf

Cletus Graf, 86, Woodston, died Thursday, September 26, 2019 at the Parkview Care Center in Osborne.

He was born June 19, 1933 in Hyacinth, the son of Sebastian and Bridget (Hammersmith) Graf. He attended Hyacinth Country School and worked on the family farm. After the death of his father in 1963, he and his mother moved to Woodston where Cletus continued to farm and raise cattle. His farm was his pride and joy. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton and a 57 year member of St. Thomas Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #7674. Cletus loved his family, was fun loving, a wonderful storyteller, and a great neighbor and friend. He had a heart of gold, was always concerned about others before himself and ready to help those in need.

Survivors include eight nephews; Paul Graf and wife Mary Ann of Woodston, Joe Graf and wife Janet of Woodston, Bob Graf and wife Linda of Alton, Jerry Graf and wife Frances of Abilene, Steve Graf and wife Liz of Downs, Dean Dreher and wife Agnes of Amarillo, TX, Dale Dreher and wife Carolyn of Wichita Falls, TX, and Val Dreher and wife Melissa of Russell, eight nieces; Sheila Melton and husband Sterling of Naper, NE, Mary Ferguson of Lansing, Rosetta Henry and husband Ken of Leavenworth, Sue Mckinzie of Lansing, Joyce Karlin and husband Mike of Hays, Diane Dinkel and husband Ron of Victoria, Laura Boxberger and husband Tim of Great Bend, and Wanda Hanzlicek and Husband Todd of Wilson, 55 great nephews and nieces, and 115 great-great nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law; Delphinus and Cecilia Graf, sister and brother-in-law; Anna and Alex Dreher, three nephews; Don Dreher, Gilbert and Wayne Graf, two nieces; Cindy Soukup and Betty Westenberger, four great nephews; Jade Graf, Dakota, Hunter, and Landon Marek, and a great niece; Shelbe Alvis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Monday, October 7, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, with Fr. Brian Lager officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A vigil service will be at 7:00 pm followed by a third degree Knights of Columbus rosary, all on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to masses or St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton. Condolences and memories of Cletus may be shared with the family at www.haysmemorial.com
