Esther Marie Cromwell, 93, passed away August 13, 2019, at Almost Home, Great Bend. She was born April 3, 1926, at Hoisington, to Alexander and Marie (Zimmerman) Wegele. Esther married Ira Cromwell Nov. 4, 1945, at Hoisington. He died Oct. 7, 1987.

Esther, a life time resident of Hoisington, was a homemaker and farmwife. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Hoisington, and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, jigsaw puzzles and caring for her house plants.

Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Zigler and husband Darrell of Susank, Connie Gilzinger and husband John of Great Bend, and Barbara Janway of Heavener, Okla.; one brother, Wilmer Wegele of Great Bend; one sister, Elsie Hicks of Santa Fe, Tex.; seven grandchildren, David Zigler and wife Andrea, Darla Carson and husband Chris, Deana Zigler and husband Michael, Jennifer Kaiser and husband Mike, Jon Welch and wife Jamie, Cristan Gottschalk and husband Clint, and Truman Janway and wife Kimberly; three step grandchildren, Tina Fenske, Michael Gilzinger and wife Bonnie, Amanda Yorkey and husband Brendan; 21 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Wegele, Leslie Wegele and John Wegele; and son-in-law, David Janway.

Funeral will be at 10:00 am Friday, August 16, 2019, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington, with Pastor Wayne Baldyga presiding. Interment will follow at Hoisington City Cemetery, Hoisington. Adilene Joy (Bolen) Rupp, age 83, of Brighton, Colorado passed away Friday, August 2, 2019 at Avamere Transitional Care Facility. She was born April 27, 1936 in Sharon Springs, Kansas to Addison Bolen and Zella (Huffman) Bolen Dorzweiler. Following her father’s death when she was a baby, her mother remarried Edwin Dorzweiler who raised her as her dad.

She married Francis Rupp on August 18, 1953 in Ellis, Kansas. She loved to cook and after raising five children worked as a cook for the Jefferson County Schools. After Francis passed away she worked in North Platte, Nebraska as a cook at an Assisted Living Facility. She moved to Colorado to be closer to her children and grandchildren and continued working as a cook at Furr’s Cafeteria until she retired. She also loved to sew, sewing many outfits for her grandchildren. She was an avid reader and loved to read many books.

Addy, as she was known in the nursing home is survived by her children Kathy Hawkins (Chuck Camp), Annette Settle (Tom), Edwin Rupp (Carole) and John Rupp. Two sisters, Mary Grayham of Tucson, AZ, Judy Stricker (Larry) of Richmond, VA, and one brother Mike Dorzweiler (Karla) of North Platte, NE. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life, Jenny Saville (Theron), Angela Hawkins, Jessi Cundiff (Russ), Wendy Tucker (Jay), David Camp (Rachel), Brandi Neihoff (Chris), Trey Settle (Shawn), Sandy Brogdon and Nikki Blair (Justin). She had 18 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son Raymond Rupp and his wife Lynn, grandchildren Tony Rupp, Jared Hawkins, and Janice Hawkins, and sisters Dolores Jean Kroeger and Irene Walker.

Funeral services will be held on August 24 at St. Mary’s Church in Ellis, Kansas with a rosary at 9 am and Mass at 10 am, followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Arrangements in care of Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th Ellis, KS 67637.

Hurley T. Smith, 75, died on Monday, August 12, 2019 at St Catherine Hospital in Garden City. He was born on August 1, 1944 at Dighton the son of Hurley W. and Nellie (Hobbs) Smith. He married Marilyn Dee Anderson on May 17, 1966 at Dighton.

Hurley graduated with the Class of 1962 at Dighton High School and attended McPherson College on a football scholarship. He returned to Dighton and worked as a lineman for Lane-Scott Electric for a few years before going into the family business, Smith’s Frozen Foods, and became owner in 1988. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Dighton and former member of Dighton Lions Club. He loved shooting trap and would travel around the state to compete when possible. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, reloading shells, making jerky out of just about anything, and lately, his daily cribbage games at the JOY Center and Dighton Bowl.

He is survived by his Wife- Marilyn Dee Smith, and Son- Curtis Smith of Kansas City, Missouri. He is preceded in death by his Parents, Son- Donnie Smith, and Sister- Arah Knight.

William “Bud” Ellsworth Starr, 92, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 11, 2019, at McPherson Health & Rehab. He was a truck driver for Kansas Transport from 1955 to 1970 and worked for McPherson Concrete where he was the Redi-Mix plant operator. After retirement, he delivered flowers and medicine for Dillons.

Bud was born on March 19, 1927, in Nevada, MO, the son of Ulysses Earl and Nellie Leta (Kennedy) Starr. He went to school in Clyde, KS and did correspondence classes through American High School, where he graduated 12th grade.

During WWII, he served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 and then served in the Navy Reserve from 1946 to 1950. He served in the Army from 1950 to 1953 during the Korean War and the Army Reserve from 1953 to 1956.

On November 27, 1949, Bud was united in marriage to Mildred “Millie” J. Meyer in Washington, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children, Susan, Lyle, and Connie.

He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as Trustee. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #172, B.P.O.E. #502, V.F.W. Post #2715, and American Legion Post #24. He also delivered Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 69 years, Millie of the home; three children, Susan Johnston (Steve) of McPherson, KS, Lyle Starr of McPherson, KS, and Connie Grennan of McPherson, KS; sisters, Helen Norris of Overland Park, KS and Jane George of Springdale, AR; brother, Larry Starr of Concordia, KS; six grandchildren, Heath Starr (Kristi) of Overland Park, KS, Aaron Starr (Jennifer) of Olathe, KS, Sam Starr (Alison) of Kodiak, AK, Madeline Shepherd (Jeremy) of Dallas, TX, Ethan Grennan of Hays, KS, and Alexander Grennan of McPherson, KS; four great-grandchildren, Knox & Kate Starr and Abrielle & Preston Starr; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Wilma Monty.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, August 22, 2019, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, August 23, at First Baptist Church with Pastor John Pattison officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow the service at McPherson Cemetery.
