KHP needs help to identify suspect who stole truck, fled fatal crash
GRANT COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities continue to search for the driver of a vehicle involved in a double-fatal weekend accident in southwest Kansas who stole another vehicle and fled. On Wednesday, the Kansas Highway Patrol released photos of the wanted suspect.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that at 12:21 p.m. Saturday, 2007 Kenworth truck was westbound on Grant County Road 10 three miles north of U.S. 160.
The driver failed to yield right of way to a 2012 Chevy Silverado that was southbound on County Road X and driven by Kevin Jay Coyle, 57, Turpin, Oklahoma, The Kenworth entered the uncontrolled intersection directly into the path of the Silverado.
Coyle and a passenger Gerald Lee Coyle, 81, Turpin, Oklahoma, were pronounced dead at the scene.
While a witness to the crash was working to assist the victims, the driver of the Kenworth truck drove away in the witness’s pickup, according to KHP Trooper Michael Racy.

Authorities located the stolen pickup in a Haskell County field. They have not found the driver who is facing criminal charges, according to Racy.

Police: Kansas rape suspect captured in Texas after crash
RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged sex assault and other charges after his arrest following an automobile accident in Texas.
Just before 4:30 p.m. October 6, police responded to a motor vehicle accident in at FM 150 and Old Post Road in Kyle, Texas, according to Kim Hilsenbeck for the police department.
Officers learned that one driver Michael Dylan Dakin , 27, Kyle, Texas, was wanted in Kansas on multiple charges including a warrant in Riley County for aggravated kidnapping.
Further investigation indicated Dakin was also wanted for additional outstanding warrants including rape and aggravated criminal sodomy in Riley County.
Over the weekend Dakin arrived in Kansas and was booked into the Riley County Jail, according to the RCPD arrest report.
He made a first court appearance via video Monday, according to the Lana Nichols with the Riley County District Court. He remains in custody on $125,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 12.
Bernard (Bernie) Nemechek
Tribune, Kansas, resident Bernard (Bernie) Nemechek, 90, passed away on May 29, 2019, at the Greeley County Long Term Care inTribune, KS.
He was born on November 3, 1928, in Ellis, KS to parents Frank and Regina Nemecek who have preceded him in death. He married Joyce L. Smith on M ay 22, 1948, in Sharon Springs, KS. He is survived by his children Trudy and John Thorburn, Buffalo, WY, Brent and Beth Nemechek, Tribune, KS, and Blake and Carmelle Nemechek, Colorado Springs, CO, seven grandchildren, Ryan and Nicole Thorburn, Jenna Thorburn, Amy and Pete Michalczyk, Rhett Thorburn, Nick and Jenifer Nemechek, Andrew Nemechek, Cody Nemechek and eight great grandchildren, Madelyn, Gabrielle, Addison, Hayden, Peyton, Rylee, Harper and Hadley.
Preceding him in death also were his sisters; Rose Martino, Mary Blackburn, and brothers; Joe, Frank and Ernest Nemechek.
Bernie was a long time business man in Tribune, KS. He owned and operated Southside Service and retired to Sun City, Arizona where he a Joyce lived for many years. Following a long and wonderful retirement in Arizona, Bernie and Joyce decided to return to Tribune due to declining health. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sun City and the United Methodist Church in Tribune. He volunteered for his church as well as many Sun City community projects.
Bernie will be laid to rest on November 4, 2019 in the Greeley County Cemetery following graveside services at 11:00 AM MT.
Memorials may be designated to the United Methodist Church in Tribune or the Greeley County Long Term Care in Tribune and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

David Jacob Reisig
David Jacob Reisig, 71, of Russell, died October 10, 2019.
He was born December 24, 1947, in Russell, Kansas, to Jacob D. Reisig and Olga Marie Steponick. David graduated from Russell High School in 1965. While achieving his bachelor’s degree in Agronomy from Kansas State University, he met and fell in love with Pamela Kaye Weckman, of Oskaloosa, Kansas. They were married January 26, 1969, and enjoyed 50 years of marriage with three vow renewals over the years.
In the early 1970s, David served as an officer in the United States Air Force Pararescue, providing long distance ocean recovery rescue missions. In 1974, David brought his family back to Russell to farm.
In the early 1980s, he and Pam started Reisig Seeds, a business that sold seed wheat and other crop seed to farmers in Kansas and to the wheat grass industry nationwide.
In 2011, David and his wife were awarded the 2010 Kansas Master Farmer and Master Farm Homemaker award for their work and success in agriculture and their service to the local community. David was an active member of the Kansas Crop Improvement Association, and a founding member of the Sunrise Kiwanis in Russell. He gave of his time to the Russell Future Farmers of America and his church. More recently, David enjoyed spending time at their vacation home in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and watching his grandchildren grow up.
David leaves his daughter Heather of Russell, KS; his daughter Erica and her husband Jiri of Petaluma, CA; and his grandchildren David and Dahlia, also of Petaluma. David was predeceased by his wife Pamela in August 2019.
A celebration of life service will be held for David and his wife Pamela on November 16, 2019, at noon at the Elks lodge in Russell, KS.

Police arrest wanted Kansas felon after traffic stop
SALINE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a wanted Kansas felon on drug charges after a traffic stop.
Just after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, an officer stopped a car in the 800 block of North Broadway in Salina had an illegal license tag on it, according to Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus.
During the stop, Salina Police K-9 Karma indicated on the vehicle for the odor of illegal drugs and a search located two grams of methamphetamine and multiple methamphetamine smoking devices.
Police arrested the driver Anthony Wonder, 31, Randall, on requested charges that include Possession of methamphetamine, Tax stamp violation, Possession of drug paraphernalia, Driving while suspended and a Vehicle license plate violation. He has a previous burglary conviction, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections and was reported as absconder October 25.
They also arrested a passenger in the vehicle, Bryan Victory, 37, of Salina on requested charges of Possession of methamphetamine and Possession of drug paraphernalia.
Jamie Lynn (Freeman) Kyger
Jamie Lynn (Freeman) Kyger, age 47 of Lebanon, MO passed away on October 22nd 2019. She was born in Olathe, KS on June 2nd 1972. She married Mark Kyger on December 31 2009. Jamie had 6 children: Ember Meadows, Natasha Meadows, Sahara Freeman, Shawn Freeman, Kirsten Kyger, and Landon Kyger. She had 14 grandchildren. Jamie was always joking and really enjoyed life. She stole the hearts of many.
Her Memorial Service will be on her birthday in 2020.
Amazing doesn’t begin to explain how much you meant to us. Amazing is just a word, but amazing you were. The love you shared, the laughs you gave. We understand death only after it has placed its hand on someone you love! Death leaves a heart ache no one can heal , Love leaves a memory no one can steal. Mary Alice Gottschalk
Mary Alice Gottschalk, age 91, of Hill City, Kansas passed from this life on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at Brookdale of McPherson, Kansas.
She was born January 27, 1928 In Hays, Kansas and was the daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Jacobs) Basgall. She married George Gottschalk Jr. in 1949. He passed away on April 25, 1990.
Mary Alice spent her childhood in Hays, Kansas. She attended St Joseph Catholic Grade School and Girls Catholic High School. She graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1949 with a BS in education. She received her reading specialist certification and then her Master’s degree in secondary education in 1976. She was active in college activities including Newman Club, Student Council, Mortar Board, student college newspaper. She was a life member of Alpha Gamma Delta social sorority.
She moved to Hill City with her husband in 1959 where they owned Jr’s home furniture company where she worked in the business as the secretary. In 1974 she was employed as a teacher in USD 281 Hill City High School teaching there until 1996 during which time she belonged to in a National Education Association, KNEA, IRA (International Reading Association) Kira and Missouri Valley Adult Education Association. She chaired the right to read program in HCHS was KAYS sponsor then JR/SR class sponsor.
Mary Alice taught the GED program for Colby Community College and served as the outreach coordinator for 30 years. She belonged to Helios Federated Club in Hill City and she was employed as a salesperson for Fred Pratt Real Estate. Her first love was education and as outreach coordinator she helped to give everyone in Graham County the opportunity to take classes and gain an education.
She is survived by her son, George Martin Gottschalk and wife Lori of Palmdale, California; two daughters, Gina Marie Deutscher and husband Bruce of Stockton, Kansas and Gwyn Elizabeth Muto and husband Bob of McPherson; six grandsons George E. Gottschalk of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kyle Cody and Casey Deutscher of Stockton, and Brenton and Adam Boyer of McPherson.
She was is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Edward and Gilbert Basgall and four sisters Bina Wangerin, Dorothy Gilmore, Valerie Basgall and Norma Jean Benoit.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Saturday November the 2, 2019 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hill City. Burial will be at 3 PM in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.
Visitation will be Saturday 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM when a rosary will be recited all at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hill City or towards scholarships at Hill City High School.

Authorities investigating a series of alleged Kansas arson fires
COWLEY COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a series of fires that have occurred within the city of Winfield during the month of October, according to a media release from the Winfield Police and Fire Departments.
The fires October 6, at 11:46 p.m. in the 300 Block of West 16th Avenue, October 7, at 1:27 a.m., in the 600 Block of E 7th Avenue, October 13, at 4:42 a.m. in 400 Block of E 4th Avenue were in grass areas near the back of homes or outbuildings, according to the release.
The fire October 27 at 1:08 a.m. in the 800 Block of E 11th Avenue involved a vehicle on fire parked in front of a residence.
Fire officials collected evidence at the scene of each fire and forwarded it to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation lab for analysis. Fire officials believe these incidents are possibly connected.
There have been no injuries reported. The public is encouraged to contact the Police or Fire Department with any information they may have regarding these incidents
UPDATE: Blowing snow across western Kan., record cold possible across region
While Hays residents didn’t wake up to the predicted 4 to 5 inches of overnight snowfall, the National Weather Service in Dodge City is expecting snow flurries to continue into the afternoon.
Western Kansas remains under a winter weather advisory through 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Strong winds with gusts of up to 45 mph are decreasing visibility in areas, and some roadways are being reported as snow covered.
The NWS in Dodge City also is warning of record or near-record low temperatures Wednesday night, with the low in Hays predicted to fall to 12 degrees.
Farther west, the Goodland NWS also is calling for record low temperatures in its coverage area, with wind chill factors falling as low as 20 below. Westbound Interstate 70 was closed for a time overnight due to poor road conditions and accidents across the Colorado border.

Kansas man charged with violent attack on woman in driveway
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Charging documents say a man charged with stabbing a Wichita woman in her driveway confessed to the random attack in jail calls after his arrest.
The affidavit in the case against 30-year-old Wade Aaron Dunn was released Monday. Wade is charged with attempted first-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in last month’s stabbing.
The affidavit says that while discussing whether his mug shot had been released, Wade said, “They should have a picture out saying, ‘Hey, this is the guy who (expletive) did it.”
The victim told police that her assailant didn’t say anything to her before attacking her as she loaded laundry into her vehicle. She says she begged him to stop, telling him, “I am a mother.”

Police find cocaine, THC loaded vape pens at Kansas home
SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on drug charges after a reported weekend altercation at a home.
Just after 5:30a.m. Sunday, police responded to a disturbance with a weapons call at a residence in the 500 Block of North Young in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.
Police were told of a physical disturbance in the home and possibly someone firing a gun. When officers arrived, nobody would come to the door of the home. Officers did make entry into the home and contacted 28 -year-old Raul Adam-Ramos of Wichita.
They also found cocaine, marijuana, THC loaded vape pens, drug paraphernalia and a loaded gun. Police collected the evidence and arrested Adam-Ramos on requested charges of possession of cocaine and marijuana with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Davidson.
No officers were injured during the arrest, police found no others at the residence and did not determine if there was a gun used, according to Davidson.
