Isolated thunderstorms are possible this evening. If any thunderstorms are able to develop across west central Kansas, very large hail in excess of baseball size are likely, and the isolated storms could be long lived into central Kansas. There is also a chance storms will not develop at all. A cold front will sweep through western Kansas early Tuesday, bringing windy conditions, and cool conditions through mid week. Temperatures will rebound into the 70s again by the weekend.

Tuesday Night  –A chance of rain showers and snow before midnight, then a slight chance of snow between midnight and 2am. Some thunder is also possible. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21. Very windy, with a north northwest wind 24 to 31 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

 

As a sharp, deep lee-side surface trough of low pressure moves toward the Kansas border from the Colorado Rockies, the south winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph after sunrise, then become even stronger by noon. South winds will howl at 25 to 35 mph this afternoon. Relative humidities will fall to below 15 percent this afternoon west of a line from Lakin to Moscow. A Red Flag warning is posted there from 2 pm to 9 pm CDT. The fire danger will be elevated and outdoor burning is not recommended. Shower and thunderstorm chances begin Sunday morning, peak on Monday night, but continue through Wednesday.

Rain is expected to develop across south central Kansas tonight, then spread northward across central and portions of western Kansas early Thursday morning.

Temperatures are expected to fall down into the 30’s overnight with near to just below freezing temperatures possible across west central and extreme southwest Kansas toward daybreak Thursday morning.

Therefore, a brief period of light freezing rain/drizzle cannot be ruled out during this short time frame. Little to no accumulation is expected given the short duration of any potential freezing precipitation.

The rain will come to an end southwest to northeast across Kansas through the day Thursday.
