Sherman John Verhoeff

Sherman John Verhoeff, age 80, of Collinsville, Oklahoma and formerly of Grinnell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from congestive heart failure. Sherman was born July 6, 1938, in Hays to John and Marie (Ashley) Verhoeff. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1956. He was in the Kansas Army National Guard and attended college in Hays, majoring in electrical engineering, and where he met his future wife and lifelong partner, Donnie Regagnon. Sherman farmed with his two uncles and father in Grinnell.

Sherman married Donnie May (Regagnon) on November 7, 1957. Sherman and Donnie moved to Kansas City in 1958 where he received his degree in Electrical Engineering. After his graduation he moved back to Grinnell and eventually had his own farm and ranch where he and his wife, Donnie, raised purebred Charolais cattle under the name Broken Bar Charolais. Sherman was an active member of the Bluestem Charolais Association and attended cattle shows, conferences, and meetings throughout the United States.

Sherman and Donnie were blessed with two daughters, Debbora and Sharon, who also attended school and graduated from Grinnell. Both girls were active in local 4-H and Sherman participated as a 4-H leader.

Sherman was always intrigued with flying and eventually he and Deb received their private pilots’ licenses together in 1976. They and the family often traveled in their Cessna 172 to visit family and friends throughout the Midwest.

Sherman was a member of the Methodist Church in Grinnell, and was baptized and married in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Larned, Kansas. He attended the Ranch Creek Ward of the LDS church in Owasso, Oklahoma.

Sherman is survived by his wife, Donnie M. (Regagnon) Verhoeff; daughters, Debbora Verhoeff, of Owasso, and Sharon Verhoeff, of Quinlan, Texas, seven grandchildren: Justin Dawson, Dallas Allen, Savanna Payne, Shawn Dawson, Jacob Allen, Amanda Paul and Garrett Paul; and eight great-grandchildren: Keira and Connor Dawson; Gwendolyn and Roselyn Allen; Colleen, Leah and Danny Marie Payne and Christopher L Bunton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie Verhoeff, and uncles: Joseph Verhoeff and Marion Verhoeff, also from Grinnell, Kansas.

Sherman will always be remembered for his warm smile, caring attitude and joyful personality.

Funeral service: 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2019 at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, Oakley. Visitation: 11:00 a.m. to service time, Monday, at the funeral home. Demma Jean (Ingram) Diekman-Sammons

Demma Jean (Ingram) Diekman-Sammons, age 91, died April 4, 2019, at her home in Hays, Kansas.

She was born January 6, 1928, in Goodland, Kansas to Harvey Wootson and Gertie Mabel (Sexson) Ingram. She married Richard Herbert Diekman on December 7, 1952, at Goodland, Kansas. They later separated and he preceded her in death on October 4, 1995. She married Theodore H. “Ted” Sammons on April 20, 1984. He preceded her in death on April 24, 2004.

Demma grew up in Goodland and was a 1946 graduate of Sherman Community High School. In 1949 she received her Associate’s Degree in Education from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. She taught in the rural one-room schoolhouses in Sherman and Logan Counties for a number of years.

She lived in Burlington, Colorado until 1979, then moved to Raytown, Missouri. While living in Burlington, Colorado she was the bookkeeper at the Ben Franklin store and was the primary church organist at the First St. Paul Lutheran Church. She attended the Community Church of Christ in Goodland and Kansas City, Missouri. Demma has lived in Hays since 1984 and was a member of The New Life Center Church. She enjoyed playing the organ, working on jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles and many handicrafts.

Survivors include, one son, Rodney Diekman and wife, Debbie, Burlington, CO; four daughters, Susan McFarland and Linda Mayer, both of Hays, KS; Connie Bernath and husband, Paul, Crawford, NE; Reta Diekman and husband, Greg Andrew, San Rafael, CA; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; three brothers, Howard W., Kenneth P.; W. Keith Ingram; her twin brother and sister,(W. Harley Ingram and Hallie Elizabeth Alford); four sisters, including her twin sisters, (Esther M. Middleton and Eva G. Birt); Dorthea M. H. Graybill and Marian P. Phillips.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, April 20, 2019, at the New Life Center Church, 1701 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas. A private family inurnment will be at the Goodland Cemetery at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:30 A.M. Saturday, at the New life Center Church.

Lorine Hewson

Lorine Hewson, 74, died Thursday, April 11, 2019 at the High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin, Kansas. She was born September 20, 1944 in Great Bend, Kansas the daughter of Harry Paul & Gertrude Marie (Selders) Hewson.

Lorine grew up in Garden City. She attended Holcomb schools and graduated from Holcomb High School. She then graduated from Garden City Community College and McPherson College where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Lorine worked as a teacher for the Larned school district and the Holcomb school district. In 1979, she became the house manager for the Emmaus House in Garden City where she worked until her retirement in 2017. Lorine was a member of the Pierceville Federated Church and she enjoyed sewing, cooking, and collecting John Wayne Memorabilia.

Survivors include a brother Paul & wife Jane Hewson of Garden City; two nieces; and one nephew. Lorine is preceded in death by her parents and a sister Linda Hewson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at the Church of the Brethren in Garden City with Von Hunn officiating. Graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 at the Larned Cemetery in Larned, Kansas. Friends may call from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the Emmaus House in care of the funeral home.

Dorothy L .Tobias

OSBORNE — Dorothy L. Tobias, 98, passed away April 10, 2019.

She was born May 6, 1920, in Downs, Kansas, the daughter of Edward and Rosa Anna (Estel)Fleig.

She was a retired cosmetologist.

She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings.

Dorothy is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and special friends, Al and Anne Reif.

Graveside service will be Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 10 am at the Downs Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Larry E. Rupp

Larry E. Rupp, age 77, of Ellis passed away Thursday, April 11 at his home in Ellis. He was born on February 12, 1942 in Hays, Kansas to Wendeline and Helen (Rupp) Rupp. He married Nancy York of Hoisington in 1966. They were later divorced.

He moved to New Orleans, LA in 1968 and joined the Teamsters Union as a painter. He also worked at restoring many historical sites. He returned to Kansas in l970 where he was known locally for restoring to its earlier state, the John Schlyer house, 601 Oak, in Hays.

He is survived by two children: Vaughn Rupp of Kansas City, KS and Deborah Pippin of Ft. Collins, CO; two brothers, Dean of Hays and Wayne of Weeping Water, NE; three grandchildren: Dustin, Dillon and Brooke Pippin and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Irvin, Darrel, Delmar, Harvey and sister, Florie Seitzinger.

A memorial service will be held 11 AM on Monday, April 15, 2019 at the Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th street in Ellis.

Barbara Spilker

Barbara Spilker, 77, died April 9, 2019.

She was born on March 25, 1942 in Wichita, KS, the daughter of Lloyd and Josephine (Hanson) Finkbeiner. Barbara was raised in Wichita, Burbank, CA and Clay Center. She graduated from CCCHS in 1961. Barbara married Terry Spilker on August 24,1962.

She worked as a switchboard operator for United Telephone, farmed with her husband, worked at Clay Center Floral and owned Barb’s Kountry Krafts. Barbara was a member of the Clay Center United Methodist Church. Terry preceded her in death on February 22, 2017. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Gregory Ray Martinez III, age 21, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, in rural Wichita County, Kansas.

Greg was born May 22, 1997, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Gregory R. Martinez, Jr. & Jacki Hilburn. An employee of Seaboard Industries, he was a lifetime resident of Leoti, Kansas.

Greg was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Leoti, Kansas and was a 2018 graduate of Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland, Kansas.

Barry David Walker

Barry David Walker, 47, was born on May 16, 1971 in Wheatridge, Colorado. He passed away on April 5, 2019 in Northglenn, Colorado. Barry graduated from Lake County High School in Leadville, Colorado.

He had a passion for both hunting and fishing. Barry’s favorite holiday was the 4th of July. He was the “firework expert” of Selden, Kansas. Barry loved spending time with his family and friends.

Barry was preceded in death by his brother, Brian and grandparents: Dorman and Carol Hill and Mahlon and Gladys Walker. He is survived by his parents, Ellis and Gloria Walker of Selden, Kansas; brother, Todd Walker of Selden, Kansas; sister, Luann Walker of Norton, Kansas and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church in Selden. Inurnment will follow at Selden Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Pauls Funeral Home to help with expenses.

Nickalaus Dale Leiker

Nickalaus Dale Leiker, 37, passed away April 9, 2019 in Great Bend. He was born January 3, 1982 at Denver, Colorado to Bradley & Patricia (Davis) Leiker.

Survivors include, his mother, Patricia McCartney; his wife, Ronda S. Leiker; one daughter, Jazmin Leiker; two stepsons, Clayton and Ray; three brothers, Paul Leiker and his wife Rebecca, Anthony Leiker and William Leiker; and one sister, Elizabeth Daniels. He was preceded in death by his father, Bradley Leiker.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date.

Deborah Nadine Cobb

Deborah Nadine Cobb, 68, passed away April 9, 2019 at her home in Great Bend. She was born January 27, 1951 at Belvidere, to Donald & Nellie (Hembree) Cobb.

Deborah had been a long-time Haviland resident and homemaker. She liked to listen to classical music, read, paint and draw. She especially loved to have tea parties with her grandkids and read to each of them.

Survivors include, one son, Garrison Cobb and his wife Brittaney of Great Bend; one brother, Grant Cobb and one sister, LaDonna Herman, both of Missouri; and six grandchildren, Christopher Avery, Adalynn Cobb, Daniel Lewis, MaKynna Lewis, Teigan Cobb and Brinley Cobb. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has taken place and Private Family Services will be held at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to the Deborah Cobb Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Alfred L. Hall

Alfred L. Hall, 81, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, April 09, 2019, at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell, Kansas.

A celebration of Lynn’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. Graveside services will follow at 2 P.M. Thursday afternoon at the WaKeeney National Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at the mortuary. Family will greet guests from 9:30 A.M. to service time on Thursday morning.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be given to the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 or Shriners Hospital and sent in care of the mortuary.

Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
