Gertrude (Vlasin) Lankas

Gertrude (Vlasin) Lankas, 102, formerly of Atwood, KS, died Monday, April 1, 2019, in Lee’s Summit, MO. She was born to Joseph and Rose (Kucera) Vlasin, near Hayes Center, NE, in Hayes County, on March 7, 1917. She was baptized into the Catholic Faith at Sacred Heart Church in Hayes County. She attended rural school in Hayes County. She was married to Anton Lankas on August 24, 1937. To this union were born three children. They lived on the farm west of Atwood, until her husband died. She then moved in to Atwood.

The joys of her life included her faith, family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She loved the farm, garden and flowers. She was a terrific cook and was known for the best cinnamon rolls around. She also enjoyed making kolache’s and did so until recently. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Christian Mothers Altar Society.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; husband Anton; brothers, Edward, Ladik, George and Joe; sisters, Velma and Agnes; brothers-in-law, Maurice Schuman and Charley Kurth; sister-in-law Betty Vlasin and son-in-law George Hammons.

Survivors include her children, Dean (Sheila) Lankas, of Atwood, Dan (Sally) Lankas, of Atwood and Diane Hammons, of Lee’s Summit, MO; sister-in-law Doris Vlasin; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation is from 5-7pm on Thursday, April 4, 2019, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood, with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Friday April 5, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood, with burial in Mt. James Burton Dalton

James Burton Dalton, 70, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 29th.

Jim was born in Hays, Kansas on June 14, 1948, a son of the late Minnie Jean (Cunningham) and Harry K. Dalton.

Survivors include his daughter, Mandy Dalton of Colorado Springs, Colorado; son, Jason Dalton of Salina; and sisters, Darlene Redinger of Osborne, and Judy Martin (Jim) of Marysville, Washington.

He is also survived by his niece, Gay Redinger of Santa Monica, California; and nephews Shane Martin (Michelle) of Hillsboro, Oregon, and Scott Martin (Julie) of Arlington, Washington.

Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn.

Memorial Service will be at 10:30 am, Thursday, April 4th at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, 500 S. Ohio, Salina, Kansas with Rev. Jon Fillipi officiating.

Elizabeth Ann ‘Betty’ (Riemann) Brooks

Elizabeth Ann “Betty” (Riemann) Brooks, daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Jurgensmeier) Riemann, was born November 29, 1929, at her grandparent’s home in rural Densmore, Kansas. Betty passed away at her home in Whispering Pines in Norton, Kansas, on March 30, 2019, at the age of 89.

Betty was the second child of seven children. She spent her childhood years on the family farm southeast of Edmond, Kansas. Betty attended Edmond Grade School and graduated from the Edmond High School with the class of 1947. On February 18, 1950, Betty married Don Brooks in Logan, Kansas. To this union were born Dennis, Kathy and Jan. Don and Betty lived on the Brooks family farm until January 1954, when they moved to and remodeled their new farm home from two small houses west of Edmond. Betty worked right beside Don on the farm raising and milking cows and raising chickens to butcher. Betty always had a large garden and spent many hours canning produce. She also sold Avon, worked at the grocery store and drove the school bus for the Lenora school district. In 2009, after farming for 60 years, Don and Betty left the family farm and moved to Norton where Betty was very faithful and dedicated in caring for Don. Don passed away October 17, 2015, and Betty made her home at Whispering Pines Assisted Living.

Betty was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Densmore where she was very active in the Altar Society. She was currently a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton. Betty was a member of several clubs including the Norton Squaredancers. She loved spending time with her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include: three children, Dennis Brooks, Norton; Kathy Kaufman (Leo) Chouinard, Newton, Kansas; Jan (Mike) Volgamore, Norton; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth (Ruby) Riemann, Edmond; Ronald (Jean) Riemann, Beloit, Kansas; Donald (Linda) Riemann, Ohio; one sister, Phyllis (Lawrence) Wetter, Salina, Kansas; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Riemann, Hill City, Kansas; Deloris Brooks, Scott City, Kansas; other relatives and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son-in-law, Tony Kaufman, one infant grandson, Tyler Brooks Kaufman, two brothers, Maurice, and one in infancy.

Alberta ‘Bertie’ Louise Forbes

Alberta “Bertie” Louise Forbes was born on April 4, 1938, in Osborne County, Kansas and passed away on March 31,2019 at Homestead Assisted Living in Manhattan, Kansas at the age of 80.

She lived her younger years in Osborne County. Later, the family moved to Benkleman, Nebraska. After Alberta’s father died in a plane crash in 1945, Alberta’s mother, Gladys, and the children moved to Covert, Kansas, to be near the Roenne family. In 1949, the family moved to Rexford, Kansas where Alberta and her three brothers attended school.

After high school, she attended Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. This is where she met the love of her life, Donald Sites. They were married August 25, 1957, in Rexford, and moved to the farm south of Grinnell where they lived the rest of her life. Alberta and Donald were inseparable. They enjoyed traveling. After retirement, they traveled to at least 84 countries. When telling stories of her travels, people would ask her where the most beautiful place on earth was, her response every time, was western Kansas. She loved being a farmer’s wife, spending many hours working outside with the family working with the cattle, gardening, or doing whatever needed to be done. Alberta was very active in the Grinnell United Methodist Church and the local Extension Homemaker Units (EHU). Alberta had many hobbies that she enjoyed with her husband. They traveled all over the U.S. and Canada searching for unique antique items and patent models. They moved the Grinnell Train Depot to the north Oakley 1-70 exit and turned it into a museum. Alberta’s favorite treasures were the lightning rod ball collection, the windmill weight collection, the barbed wire collection, and the cast iron seat collection. She was very proud that she held the Powder-Puff Barbed Wire Championship for a few back-to-back years. Donald and Alberta had celebrated 61 years of marriage last year.

Alberta and Donald were blessed with a son, Dalen, in 1958, and a daughter, Marla, in 1961. Dalen is a veterinarian and lives in Mohave Valley, Arizona with his wife Deann. Their child, D’adra, was Alberta’s first granddaughter. D’adra lives in Phoenix, Arizona and is a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist. Marla lives in a rural area near Olsburg, Kansas with her husband Lynn. Marla works at Covetrus in the Manhattan, Kansas office. Lynn and Marla gave Alberta and Donald two more granddaughters, Codie and Callie. Codie lives in Topeka, Kansas and will be graduating from Washburn Law School this May. Codie and her fiancé, Tanner Swartz, are planning an August 10, 2019, wedding. Callie lives in Manhattan, Kansas and attends Kansas State University. She is majoring in Kinesiology and plans to attend Physical Therapy school in the future.

Alberta was preceded in death by her father Lewis Willard Forbes and her mother, Gladys Alberta Roenne Forbes. In addition to her children and grandchildren, Alberta is survived by three brothers; Lewis Forbes (wife Hazel) of Madera, California; Duane (wife Connie) of Mesa, Arizona, and Marion (wife Marlene) of Fresno, California.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home in Oakley. Burial will be at the Grinnell Township Cemetery, Grinnell. LaVerne Georgina Davidson

LaVerne Georgina Davidson, 97, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2019, at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was born April 8, 1921, in rural Barton County the daughter of Fred and Alice (Bochow) Kraft. She was united in marriage to Charles F. Davidson September 8, 1943, in Claflin. He passed away January 6, 2011.

LaVerne was a lifetime resident of Barton County, moving to Claflin in 1979. LaVerne was a member of Claflin United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Claflin Boosters and the Plus 55 Club. She enjoyed quilting, crossword puzzles, letter writing and sending cards.

Survivors include, one son, Dale Davidson and wife Mary Ann of Derby; two daughters, Lynann Fraker and husband Dan of Shawnee and Sue Woydziak and husband Steve of Emporia; seven grandchildren, Philip (Trisha) and Andrew (Erin) Davidson, Rod (Megan) and Brett Fraker, Neil (Jodi) and Adam (Mindy) Woydziak, Amber (Chris) Navarro; thirteen great grandchildren, Drew, Kyle, Chloe and Cainan Davidson, Joshua, Lucas and Alaina Fraker, Kaden, Logan and Taryn Woydziak and Ian, Rylan and Brysen Navarro. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Alford Kraft.

Visitation will be 1:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday April 3, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home with family present 6:00 to 7:00 pm Funeral service will be 10:30 am Thursday April 4, 2019 at the Claflin United Methodist Church in Claflin, with Pastor Diana Webster officiating. Ronald Lynn Brier

Ronald Lynn Brier, 51, of Colby, died Sunday, March 31, 2019, at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, KS. He was born May 19, 1967, in St. Francis, KS, to Raymond and Marlene (Weis) Brier.

Ron graduated from Colby High School in 1985. After school he went to work for Commercial Sign until 2000, when he started working in the maintenance department at Citizens Medical Center. He then started Brier for Hire, where he worked as a handyman. When the St. Thomas Historic Residences opened in 2014 he went to work there, in maintenance.

Ron enjoyed woodworking, camping, hiking, golfing and especially spending time outside with his boys.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Michael Brier. Ronald is survived by his sons, Austin and Brandon Brier; mother, Marlene “Marty” Brier; sister Patricia Ann (Robert) Mullins; brother Michael Allen (Valerie) Brier and many nieces and nephews.

Elenora Moeder

Elenora Moeder, 89, La Crosse, Kansas, died Sunday, March 31, 2019, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Mrs. Moeder was born May 25, 1929, in rural La Crosse, Kansas, the daughter of Nicholas and Veronica (Legleiter) Herrman. She was a lifelong resident of rural La Crosse, Kansas. A 1947 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, she was a homemaker and farm wife.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

On June 15, 1948, she married Thomas J. “Tommy” Moeder at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas. He preceded her in death August 6, 2003.

Survivors include: five sons, Larry Moeder (Deanna), Manhattan, Kansas, Leon Moeder (Susan), Wichita, Kansas, Kurt Moeder, La Crosse, Kansas, Kevin Moeder (Cheryl), La Crosse, Kansas, and Duane Moeder (Linda), La Crosse, Kansas; 11 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and two brothers, Marvin Herrman (Florence), La Crosse, Kansas, and Albert “Al” Herrman (Mary), Lindsborg, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six brothers, Chris Herrman, Elmer Herrman, Alvin Herrman, Alex Herrman, Kenneth Herrman, and Raymond Herrman; and five sisters, Emma Moeder, Agnes Herrman, Bertha Sauber, Edith Bollig, and Sister Louise Herrman.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 2, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M.

Rosamond ‘Rose’ Schuvie

Rosamond “Rose” Schuvie, 92 years of age, passed on Sunday March 31, 2019 in Hays, Kansas. She was born on December 3, 1926 in Catharine, Kansas to Louis and Agatha (Stressler) Wasinger. Rose was the middle child of seven and grew up on her family’s farm in Catharine until she was 10 when the family moved to Hays. She graduated from Hays High and attended Fort Hays State University. Rose married Gilbert J. “Gib” Schuvie in 1946 after Gib was discharged for the Navy. The celebrated 45 years of marriage until he preceded her in death August 4, 1991.

Rose worked at Southwestern Bell Phone Company for 35 years where she met a close group of 10 friends who continued to get together on birthdays for many years after retirement. Rose and Gib were both Russia German descendants who built their family life around church on Sunday, cooking, and big meals with lots of family. God and family were always most important to Rose. She traveled often to spend time with her grandchildren and her favorite time of all was having her family home in Hays visiting, gathering in the kitchen, telling stories, laughing and enjoying each other. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

Rose is survived by a son, David Schuvie and wife Diana of Rochester, Michigan; two daughters, Sue Niernberger and husband Skeeter of Hays and Maria Weskamp of Springfield, Missouri; two sisters, Patricia and Shirley; six grandchildren, Lynn (Schuvie) Moersch, Kim (Schuvie) Robinson, Summer (Niernberger) Ruder, Madison Weskamp, Garrett Weskamp, and Jackson Weskamp; 9 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Bob, Don and Frank Wasinger and a sister, Mary.

Funeral services will be10:00 AM Thursday, April 4, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday 5 PM – 8 PM and Thursday 9 AM – 9:30 AM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine hays, KS 67601.

A parish vigil service will be Wednesday at 6:15 PM followed by a VFW Auxiliary memorial and rosary service all at the funeral chapel.

MaryAnn Tobias

MaryAnn Tobias, 69, passed away March 25, 2019 at Via Christi-St. Francis, Wichita KS.

She was born October 3, 1949 in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Henry and Agnes Stein Drees. MaryAnn graduated from Marian High School in Hays with the class of 1967; and received her Bachelor of Science in Business Education from Fort Hays State University.

She was a retired para professional with USD 405 Lyons and a farm wife. MaryAnn was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson, former longtime member and church council member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons, St. Paul Altar Society, and volunteer at Central Christian School in Hutchinson.

On April 3, 1970, Mary Ann was united in marriage with Eddie Tobias in Hays. He survives of the home. She also is survived by her two children; son, David Tobias and wife LeeAnn; and daughter, Jill Achatz both of Hutchinson; brother, Larry Drees and wife Joan of Ellinwood; grandchildren, Kaylin Tobias, Reilly Tobias, Christian Achatz, and Alexis Achatz.

Funeral Mass will be 2:00 P.M., Friday, March 29, 2019, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson, with Father Michael Kerschen officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 5:00 P.M., Thursday, March 28, 2019 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with family present from 3:00 until 5:00 P.M.; and from 6:30 until 8:00 P.M. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson. Parish rosary will be held at 7:00 P.M.

Darrell ‘Mac’ D. McMillin

Darrell “Mac” D. McMillin, 85, of Atwood, died Saturday, March 30, 2019, at Prairie Senior Living Complex, Colby. He was born January 6, 1934, in Atwood, KS, to Leroy and Leona (Schroeder) McMillin.

Upon graduating from Atwood High School Darrell joined the Navy and served on a fuel tanker during the Korean War, from 1958 to 1962. After being honorably discharged he returned to Atwood where he met and married his sweetheart Mary Ann Ryan, on July 25, 1964, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood. From this union they had two children Mike and Denise.

He worked with his father as a welder at Leroy’s Repair Shop which he later took over as proprietor. In retirement he enjoyed fishing, hunting, driving in the country and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs. Darrell was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Atwood, American Legion Sam Hubbard Post #46, and Knights of Columbus. Darrell was proud of his grandchildren and attended many of their sporting activities.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; sister Maxine Rahe; sisters-in-laws, Darlene Ryan and Phyllis Dean and brother-in-law, Mark Ryan.

He is survived by his children, Denise (Todd) Voss, of Colby, and Michael (Shelley) McMillin, of Oklahoma City, OK; eight grandchildren, Kelsey, Andrew, Morgan, Ryan, Tyler, and Riley Voss, Samantha and Nicolas McMillin; two great-grandchildren, Kinlee Middleton and Arianna McMillin; brothers-in-law, Patrick (Betty) Ryan and Jerry Dean; sister-in-law, Shirley Hess and many nieces and nephews.

Patricia Lee (Montgomery) O’Brien

Patricia Lee (Montgomery) O’Brien, 78, died Wednesday, March 27, 2019. She was born Feb. 19, 1941, in Monta Vista, Colo.

Patricia graduated from Goodland High School in 1959 and attended Colby Community College and the Bellus Academy of Cosmetology in Manhattan. She lived in Goodland, Colby, El Dorado, Denver and Colorado Springs. She worked at Goodland Regional Medical Center, Golden West Skills Center, Good Samaritan-Sherman County and Huskey’s Truck Stop.

She was preceded in death by her mother Mary Isabelle Giou Wright de Montgomery; father Paul Montgomery; brothers Jean Paul Montgomery and John “Jack” Denton Montgomery; and son Kirk Denton Hartman.

Survivors include daughters Debra Hummingbird of Canon City, Colo., and Michele Hartman of Goodland; sons Michael Brenninger of Kansas City, Steven Guenther of Goodland, Christopher O’Brien and Joseph Hutchison, both of Chanute; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several self-adopted children of the community.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 5, at the Goodland Episcopal Church. Family members, adopted family and close friends will be meeting at 3 p.m. A pot luck and celebration of life will follow the service at Chambers Park. The family requests people bring photos and memories of Patricia along with white cotton shirts for tie dye.
