Donald ‘Don’ Paul Branine

Donald “Don” Paul Branine, age 79, of Ogallah, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 15, 2019 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born March 20, 1939, in Wichita, Kansas to Paul D. and Jenny “Marie” (Ludwick) Branine. He was a graduate of Douglass High School class of 1956. On November 10, 1956 Don was united in marriage with Norma Shaver, later divorced, and remained good friends. On July 19, 1984 Don was united in marriage to Carol Hughes.

Don enjoyed cars, racing, the lake, music, and singing karaoke. He worked at the Triangle Restaurant in Douglass, Kansas, Western Lithograph, Wichita, Kansas, and Branine Chevrolet in Mulvane, Kansas before becoming the owner of Don Branine Chevy Olds in Winfield, Kansas in 1970. He relocated to Haysville, Kansas in 1981 to take over Haysville bowl and later West Gate Fun Center. Don then moved to Warsaw, Missouri in 1997 and continued his career as a car dealer and DJ.

He moved to Ogallah, Kansas in 2018. He was a member of Winfield Jaycees Rotary Club, Lions Club, and Chamber of Commerce. He was awarded “Outstanding Young Man of Kansas” in 1974-1975. Don was proud he was able to bring great music to many generations as one of the originators of the Winfield Bluegrass Festival. He had a passion for life, desire to build and give back to the community he resided, and left a lasting impression on those he encountered.

He is survived by brother, Roger Branine; three daughters, Linda Herbers and husband, Chuck of Ogallah, Kansas, Shirley Lundrey and husband Roger of Rose Hill, Kansas, Connie Baer and husband Dave of Andover, Kansas; son, Don Branine and wife, Patty of Osage City, Kansas; two step sons, Danny and Scott Hughes; grandchildren, Chad Herbers and wife, Lindsay, Stacy Logue and husband, Grant, Kelli Herbers-Schmidt and husband, Eric, Kyle Branine, Keisha Branine, Amy Leake, and Dawn Golway; and great-grandchildren, Teagan, Layne, and Taryn Herbers, Alyssa and Kaley Logue, Jace Herbers, Catherine, Evelyn, and Sophia Schmidt, Aliaya Baer, Destiny Thurber, Andrew and Matthew Portnier, Shahasta Lundry, and Jaden, Nyasia, and Tristan Collins. He was preceded in death by wife, Carol; parents, Paul and Marie Branine; brother, Gary Branine; son-in-law, Rick Leake; and grandson, Joshua Branine.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6 PM-8 PM at Schmitt Funeral Home in Wakeeney, Kansas.

Graveside funeral service will be Wednesday March 20, 2019 at 11:30 AM at Mulvane Cemetery, Mulvane, Kansas.

Rodney L. Walters

Rodney L. Walters, age 60, Hays, KS, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society-Hays.

He was born on November 9, 1958 in Stafford, KS to Lester Walters and Colleen Kay (Madden) Robinson. On March 17, 2000, Rodney was united in marriage to Janet L. Hollis in Hays, KS. She preceded in him in death on April 21, 2018.

Rodney is survived by his loving family.

Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Catherine M. ‘Katie’ Pfannenstiel

Catherine M. “Katie” Pfannenstiel, age 89, of Hays, Kansas passed away Friday, March 15, 2019 at Hays Medical Center. She was born August 25, 1929 in Walker, Kansas to Henry and Clementine (Dreher) VonLintel. She graduated from Victoria High School in 1947. On October 2, 1947 she married Justin Pfannenstiel in Victoria. He preceded her in death on March 12, 1999.

Catherine was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a 30 plus year member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed playing cards, socializing with her friends and her grandchildren.

She is survived by a son, Steven Pfannenstiel and wife Wanda of Hays; three daughters, Bonnie Ruder and husband Terry of Kansas City, Kansas, Jackie Creamer and husband Duane of Hays and Chris Minshew and husband George of Houston, Texas; a sister, Joan Murta of St. Charles, Missouri; nine grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Lawrence, Norbert, Gilbert and Otto VonLintel and a sister Venita Wolf.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Church in Hays with burial to follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday 5 PM -7 PM and Tuesday 9 AM – 9:30 AM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

A Daughters of Isabella rosary service will be Monday at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil at 7 PM all at the funeral chapel.

Delbert Dean Riedl

Delbert Dean Riedl, age 81, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.

He was born on July 13, 1937 in LaCrosse, Kansas, the son of Fred Joseph and Julia Kraisinger Riedl. A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, he worked for the County of Scott County until his retirement.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On July 21, 1963 he married Ruth Wells in Scott City, Kansas. She survives.

Survivors Include his Wife – Ruth Riedl of Scott City, Kansas, One Son – Harold Riedl of Scott City, Kansas, One Daughter – Twilla & Dan Snell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Three Brothers – Bernard Riedl of Sedgwick, Kansas, Duane Riedl of Phoenix, Arizona, Raymond Riedl of Peoria, Arizona, Six Grandchildren and Five Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, One Daughter – Pearl Sue Riedl, Two Brothers – Jack Riedl and Wilbur Riedl and One Infant Sister – Opal Riedl.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2019 at First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas with Rev. Rodney Hopper presiding.

Memorials In Lieu Of Flowers may be made to the Dean Riedl Memorial Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, Kansas.

Bryan W. Bachkora

Bryan W. Bachkora, 88, Hays, died Friday, March 15, 2019 at HaysMed.

He was born August 18, 1930, in Hall County, Nebraska the son of Charles and Lucy (McDonald) Bachkora.  On May 26, 1955 he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Nelson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wood River, Nebraska. They celebrated over 63 years of marriage. 

He was an Engineman Third Class (EN3) in the United States Navy serving during the Korean War.  He graduated from Ravenna High School and the University of Nebraska Kearney with a Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Industrial Education. 

He was a professor at Fort Hays State University in the Industrial Technology Department from 1965 until retiring in 1992.  From 1992 until 2011 he owned and operated Bachkora Builders doing home remodeling and offering unique and custom designs to his customers. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, American Legion, VFW, U.S. Navy LST Association, U.S. Navy LSM Association, and involved with Engaged Encounter for 34 years and Marriage Encounter for ten years. 

He was very artistic and creative, enjoyed painting, creating metal sculptures, and woodworking for his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane of the home in Hays, three sons; Charlie Bachkora and wife Patty of Olathe, Kevin Bachkora and wife Laura of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Tom Bachkora and wife Carrie of Overland Park, two daughters; Mary Bachkora of Lee’s Summit, MO and Rose Schaffer and husband Van of Lawrence, a sister; Nancy Ciemnoczowlowski of Wood River, NE, a sister-in-law; Vera Bachkora of Kearney, NE, twelve grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother; Floyd Bachkora and a brother-in-law; Joe Ciemnoczowlowski. 
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic, Hays, with Fr. Fred Gatschet officiating.  Burial with military honors will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Woodriver, Nebraska.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 9:30 am until 10:15 on Wednesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.  A combined vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Margaret M. Bennett

Margaret M. Bennett, 93, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2019 in Wilson. She was born April 16, 1925 in Clinchco, VA to Steven and Elizabeth Ramsey.

Margaret married Ralph Bennett on October 29, 1944 in Clintwood, VA. She was a longtime resident of Holyrood where she was a member of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and the ladies’ auxiliary. She was a homemaker and a retired supervisor at Elkan in Ellsworth.

Margaret is survived by her sons, Dr. Gerald “Jerry” Bennett (Isabel) of Ocoee, FL and Jack Bennett (Denise) of Salina; grandchildren, Sean Bennett (Jasmine), Samantha Burrerll (Josh), and Annabelle Levin; and great granddaughter, Nora Burrell. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; three sisters and two brothers.

Private family services will be planned at a later date.

Ora Novelyn King

Ora Novelyn King passed away March 14, 2019 at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore.

She was born April 6, 1929 in Brown County, Texas to Harvey Lee and Gladys Anne Hibler Fisher.

Moving to Hanston from Early, Texas, she was a homemaker.

Novelyn was of the Baptist faith and a member of First Baptist Church, Hanston; the senior centers in Hanston and Early, Texas; and spent her time volunteering with the good Samaritan Center and Meals on Wheels, both in Brownwood, Texas.

On February 20, 1949 she married Walter Thomas King in Brown County, Texas; he preceded her in death on February 6, 1995.

She is survived by a daughter, Debbie (Ronnie) Ruff, Hanston; a son, Tommy Lee (Frances) King, Rosebud, Texas; two sisters, Una May (G.W.) Eoff, Early, Texas; Ladelia Ann Edger, Early, Texas; five grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Harvey Alvis Fisher.

Funeral service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2019 at First Baptist Church, Hanston, with Pastor Rod McMillan presiding. Interment will be at a later date in Brownwood, Texas.

Isaac Nixon

Isaac Nixon, age 94, formerly of Ogallah, passed away March 8, 2019 in Overland Park.

Private burial has taken place to honor Isaac’s wishes.

Ronald K. Butler

Ronald K. Butler, 59, of Salina, passed away peacefully in his home Wednesday, March 13, 2019. He was born in Belleville, Jan. 17, 1960, to Robert and Linda (Richardson) Butler.

Ron worked his early life on grain elevators and did construction. In later years, he was a maintenance supervisor. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, a proud patriot, and a handyman who loved fixing all the toys his grandchildren broke. He loved the Lord, spending time with his family, fishing and hunting, Kansas City Chiefs, Jeopardy, Reese’s peanut butter cups, and listening to talk radio.

Survivors include: his wife of 29 years, Aurdra, of the home; children, Autumn Robbins (Jonathan), Brittani Allison (Korey), and Matthew Butler (Dayana), all of Hays, and Austin Butler and Aaron Butler, of Salina; brothers, Jeff Butler (Anita) of McCracken, Bob Butler (Debbie), of Oskaloosa; cousin, Mike Meadows (Raylene) of Tremball, Neb.; grandchildren, Jack, Barron, Brielle, Mason, Kingston, Carter and Matteo.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; and brother, Tod Butler.

Services will be at 1 p.m Monday, March 18, at Gypsum Methodist Church, Gypsum, with refreshments to follow. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Belleville City Cemetery at 4 p.m.

Leona Mae Conaway

Leona Mae Conaway, 92, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at her home in Smith Center.

A celebration of Leona’s life will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 18, 2019 at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, Smith Center, with Pastor Lance McDowell officiating.

There will not be a public visitation as cremation was chosen.

Memorials may be given to the Athol Congregational Church or Hospice Services of northwest Kansas or Smith Center Library and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Thomas Edward “Tom” Bigge,

He was born May 20, 1946 in Hays to Edward Kirk and Bethyl Maxine (Fry) Bigge.

Tom graduated from Stockton High School in 1964.

On February 18, 1968 he married the love of his life Ruth Ann Wilhite in Basehor, Kansas.

Tom was a hard-working farmer. He loved the farm but especially his livestock. He wore many hats throughout his life. He was a farmer, stockman, rancher, house mover, hunter and a demolition man.

Known as a man of integrity, Tom’s word was his bond. He was a great believer in the Christian Work Ethic, “there is very little that hard work cannot overcome.” He enjoyed life. He was a good man that enjoyed a good joke and a good laugh.

Tom was very involved in community activities. He served as president of the Unified School District 271; president of Rooks County Farm Bureau Board of Directors; president of Farmers Union Cooperative; trustee of the Congregational Church; and a member of the Board of Directors of Friends of Historic Fort Hays.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, an infant daughter, two grandsons and a granddaughter.

Tom is survived by the love of his life Ruth Ann of the home in Stockton; sons: Curt Thomas (Rebecca) Bigge, Douglas Edward (Kori) Bigge, Stephen Louis (Melissa) Bigge all of Stockton; daughters: Beth Ann (Jason) Pfeifer, Russell, Kansas, Holly Marie (Aaron) Beaton, Scott City, Kansas; sisters: Robyn Harris, Kansas City, Missouri, Cynthia J. Kinall, Norton, Kansas; Christine M. (Thomas) Patree was a special person to Tom and Ruth Ann that they think of as a special daughter; and 13 grandchildren.

A good man is gone from out midst but never will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 14 at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home Plainville, 320 SW Second,

Gilbert Joseph Meyeres

Gilbert J. Meyeres, 74, passed away March 13, 2019. He was born October 31, 1944 in Hoisington, the son of Frank Peter and Helen Isabelle (Kinzel) Meyeres.

He was a retired farmer and real estate agent.

Gilbert is preceded in death by his parents; brother, LeRoy Meyeres and sister, Lois Wheeler.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, of McPherson; children Charletta Camp (Donnie) of McPherson and Tracy Camp (Jess) of Overland Park and two grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Downs.
