Duane ‘Dewey’ Lloyd Carlson

Duane “Dewey” Lloyd Carlson, 81, of Great Bend, formerly of Leonardville and Manhattan, passed away March 7, 2019 in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on Thursday April 8, 1937 at Park View Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas to Lloyd and Viola Carlson.

Duane graduated from Leonardville High School in 1955 and he later began working at Farm Bureau, where he built his career. He enlisted with the Army National Guard on November 19, 1958 and was honorably discharged on November 18, 1964. He met his future wife, Patricia Arlone (Krinhop) Carlson while working at Farm Bureau and they were married on September 18, 1960 at the Lutheran Church in Chapman, KS.

Duane worked for Farm Bureau for 43 years before he retired. After his retirement, he began driving vehicles for Marmie’s and Doonan’s, which allowed him the opportunity to travel the United States, which he loved. Duane spent as much time as possible with is family and friends. His favorite past times were playing golf and watching football.

Duane is survived by his sons Mark and Laurie Carlson of Overland Park and Michael and Susan Carlson of Great Bend, granddaughters Shanna, Alexandra, Nicole (fiancé Erik Anderson), and Jordan, and soon to be great grandson Oliver Lloyd Hight. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and wife.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, KS with family present from 5 – 7 p.m. Services will be held at Bryant Funeral Home on Tuesday March 12, 2019 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Aaron Withrow and Pastor Barbara Jones presiding. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Indian Hills Cemetery in Chapman, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials to be designated to Foundry Methodist Church or Trinity Lutheran Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Rosemary A. Bange

Rosemary A. Bange, 92, of Colby, died Thursday, March 7, 2019 at Prairie Senior Living Complex, Colby.

She was born April 28, 1926, in Kansas City, MO, to John and Mary (Fellhoelter) Rehmer. Rosemary entered the Order of the Sisters of Adorers of the Blood of Christ in Wichita, in 1942. She completed her high school education in 1944 and then went on to complete nurses training in 1948, at Saint Mary’s Hospital, in Enid, OK.

She was licensed as a registered nurse in Kansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. In 1969 she left the Sisters of Adorers and began working as a Registered Nurse at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays. She then, in 1970, worked at the Sheridan County Hospital in Hoxie for 8 months before becoming the night supervisor at Saint Thomas Hospital in Colby, where she worked until 1975. On September 26, 1970, Rosemary married Sylvester Bange. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, Saint Jude Circle and Queen Mary Circle. Rosemary enjoyed dancing with the “young at heart” at the Senior Center and volunteering as a Pink Lady at Citizens Medical Center and for Hospice Services, where she was the volunteer coordinator of Thomas County. She was a member of Family, Community & Education Organization (FCE) of Sheridan County and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Rehmer; brothers, Mark and Joseph Rehmer; sister Mary Ellen Zimmerman; brothers-in-law John Zimmerman, Walter Meitl, Vincent Bange and Raymond Bange; sister-in-law Agnes Bange and niece Sandra Rae Bange.

She is survived by her husband, Sylvester, of Colby; son Christopher (Vicky), of Rexford; grandchildren, Rebecca (Jonathan) Butler, Clayton Bange, Hannah Bange and Jordyn Bange and great grandchildren, Harper Ann and Jaxon Dean.

Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2019, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby, with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Don Albin

Don Albin, age 89, of rural Utica, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. He was born Donald Lee Albin, May 18, 1929, in Gove County, Kansas to Ernest L. and Myrtle Hester (Goss) Albin.

He attended Gove County East Lonestar District #19 through 8th grade, then went on to graduate from Trego Community High School. On May 2, 1948, he was united in marriage to Francis Arlene Flagler in Trego, Kansas. To this union, two sons and two daughters were born. After the death of his first wife in March 18, 1991, Don later married Dorothy Pearl Richert on May 15, 1994, in Meno, Oklahoma. They enjoyed twenty-four years of marriage together.

Don was a farmer and rancher. His passions were equally divided between his faith, his farm and his family. He loved to tell people about Jesus, care for the land God created, and be with his family. He also enjoyed helping people, he was a neighbor to people all over Gove County and a generous supporter of missions and students all around the world.

Survivors include two sons, Tom and wife Maryle Hargitt Albin of Nashville, TN; Doug and wife Laurie of WaKeeney, Kansas; and a daughter, Eloise Albin Hall and husband Mark of Newton, Kansas; and stepchildren Steve Richert and wife Jeanne, Mike Richert and wife Diana, Deb Richert Regier and husband John, Robin Richert Souter and husband Randy, and Jim Richert and wife Joy.

Don had 28 grandchildren, Rebekah (Beka) Albin Tischker and husband Ben; April Albin Graves and husband Kyle; Heather Albin Marvin and husband Robert; Ryan Hall and wife Katie; Michelle Hall; Lauren Albin Anderson and husband Austin; Julia Albin Hopkins and husband Jacob (Jake); Jacqueline Winslow (Jackie) and husband Luke; Leslie Black; Melissa Richert Prochaska and husband Scott; Jessica Richert Oswald and husband Brooks; Elisabeth Richert; Jennifer Richert Gatlin and husband Jason; Nathaniel Richert; Michael Richert and wife Jenny; Jesse Richert; Josh Richert and wife Eva; Emily Regier; Maggie Regier Baker and husband Kory; Jake Regier and wife Kelsey; Libby Regier Brooks and husband Scott; J Walsh and wife Jessica; Matt McGuire and wife Annie; Megan Souter; Madison Souter; Ross Richert and wife Kayla; Brad Richert and wife Courtney; and Kelsey Richert.

He leaves behind 35 great-grandchildren: Charlotte (Charlie) Tischker, Wyatt Graves, Levi Graves, Colton Graves, Ellie Marvin, Hadley Marvin, Sylvie Marvin, Anya Hall, Jack Hall, Leah Hopkins, Samuel (Sam) Hopkins, Ashton Anderson, Nikoli Prochaska, Percy Prochaska, Kaleigh Prochaska, Evelyn Gatlin, Eleora Gatlin, Natalie Richert, Ella Doeksen, Ava Doeksen, Jonathan Doeksen, Jo Jo Doeksen, Eli Baker, Anna Baker, Nora Baker, Kody McCrady, Toby Walsh, Riley Walsh, Legend McGuire, Legaci McGuire, Levi Richert, Cameron Richert, Henry Richert, Annabelle Richert, and Evelyn Richert.

Don also leaves behind a sister, Lois Riggs of Cottage Grove, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, E.L. and Myrtle Hester (Goss) Albin; two infant siblings; brothers Glen, Lester, Marvin, Roy, Ralph, Harold and Gene; and sisters Elsie Roberts, Rachel Johnson, and Pearl Ward; a daughter, Colleen Albin Hall; and his first wife Francis Arlene Flagler Albin.

Visitation will be Saturday morning from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Quinter Church of the Brethren prior to the service.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 9, 2019, at the Quinter Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in the Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter. The funeral dinner will be at the Quinter, United Methodist Church at 12:30 p.m.

Edna Eileen Straub

Edna Eileen Straub, 74, of Russell, Kansas, died on March 06, 2019, at her home in Russell, Kansas.

A memorial service to celebrate Eileen’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, March 14, 2019, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Ezekiel Koech officiating. Cremation will take place prior to services.

Memorials may be sent for Hays Hospice and Hope Lodge of Kansas City and can be sent in care of the mortuary.

Marjorie B. Niewald

Marjorie B. Niewald, 93, passed away March 6, 2019 at The University of Kansas Health System, Pawnee Valley Campus, Larned.

She was born January 8, 1926 in Bazine, KS, the daughter of George and Mattie Seuser Wagner. A longtime area resident, she was a bookkeeper at the La Crosse COOP.

She was a member of the Larned United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary and the Bison American Legion Auxiliary

On July 21, 1949, she married John Niewald at Bison. He died January 24, 1991.

Survivors include: grandchildren, Mat Thompson (Kayla Reisner), Larned and Kelsi Thompson (Cody Elliott), Great Bend; four great grandchildren, Tucker Thompson and Spurgeon Thompson, both of Larned, Camden Elliott and Emma Elliott, both of Great Bend; step grandson, Alex Fulls, Kinsley and a niece, Jo Ann Edwards, Russiaville, Indiania.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two daughters, Debbie Niewald and Peggy Niewald Thompson.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 14, 2019 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at Beckwith Mortuary. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2019 at Lone Star Cemetery, Bison, KS.

Memorials may be given to the Larned United Methodist Church or Larned Fire Department in care of Beckwith Mortuary, Box 477 Larned, KS 67550.

Henrietta June Van Kooten

Rural Long Island resident Henrietta June Van Kooten passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at the Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, NE at the age of 90.

She was born April 22, 1928 in Phillips County, KS, the daughter of Garrit & Gradda (Veldhuizen) Tien. On May 7, 1947, she married Alfred Earl Van Kooten in the Luctor parsonage in Phillips County. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1988.

Those left to mourn her passing include her five children, Conrad Van Kooten of Long Island, KS, Judith Horne of Grand Island, NE, Karen Van Kooten of McCook, NE, Ann Griffin and Cynthia Schemper, both of Almena, KS; her siblings, Marie Bousema of Worthington, MN; Dorothy Huyser of Des Moines, IA; Rosalee Verhoef of Artesia, California; Arlo Tien of Prairie View, KS; Edward Tien of Phillipsburg, KS; Carmen VanBeek of Sioux Center, IA; 14 grand-children, 32 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church, Phillips County, KS, with Gale Tien officiating. Burial will follow in the Luctor Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 7, from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. and Friday, March 8, from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday evening.

Lawrence ‘Larry’ Joseph Havlas

Lawrence “Larry” Joseph Havlas passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2019 in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 74.

He was born on January 17, 1945 in Kansas City, MO to the late Joseph and Clara (Seck) Havlas. Larry spent the majority of his life in Plainville and he graduated from Plainville High School in 1963. After his graduation he managed the family farm until he switched occupations and became a motor carrier. He was united in marriage to Glenda Anderson and was blessed with three children: Mike, Melissa, and Matt. They later divorced.

Larry was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Plainville. He enjoyed sporting events, especially going to Royals and Chiefs games, and working on puzzles. He was a pheasant hunter for many years and hunted with the same group of hunters for over 30 years.

Larry is survived by his children Mike Havlas of Olathe, KS, Matt Havlas and wife Daryl of Quinter, KS, and Melissa Blake and husband Richard of Wichita, KS; 11 grandchildren Jessica Shumway and husband Jordan, Jacob Havlas and wife Sophia, Jaci Havlas, Rick Blake Jr. and wife Brooke, Amanda Kruse and husband Matt, Monica Blake, Joshua Blake, Peyton Havlas, Conner Havlas, Preston Havlas, Cooper Havlas; and 6 great-grandchildren Liam Shumway, Spencer Shumway, Brody Havlas, Brinley Blake, Jaxson Kruse, and Emma Kruse; and 3 more great-grandkids on the way.

Preceding Larry in death are his parents, Joseph and Clara Havlas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Visitation will be from 1:00-8:00pm on Wednesday with family receiving friends from 5:00 – 7:00pm and a Prayer Vigil at 5:30pm at the funeral home in Plainville.

Elmer Matthew Jacobs

Longtime Goodland, KS, resident Elmer Matthew Jacobs, 81, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society-Sherman County in Goodland, KS.

Elmer was born on April 16, 1937 in Dresden, Kansas to Raymond Matthew and Rose Magdaline (Ritter) Jacobs. He was one of 10 children. Elmer grew up and attended school in Leoville, KS, graduating from Leoville High School in 1955. He then went on and attended one year of Electrical Training at Parks University in Denver, Colorado.

On May 25, 1957, Elmer married Viola Leona Brungardt. To this union, six children were born; Jeanne, Delilah, Debra, Jennifer, Viola and Leona.

Elmer owned and operated Jacobs Appliance, Inc. in Goodland, KS until he retired in 1986 and started ostrich ranching. His favorite pastime was fishing with anybody he could talk into going with him. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and the Goodland Knights of Columbus as a 4th Degree Knight; he served as State President of Jaycee’s, and was a member of the Kiwanis, Elks and Rotary.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Viola, an AFS Son Fabio Pissaro, two twin daughters Viola and Leona; three sisters and 4 brothers.

He is survived by his children; Jeanne Jacobs of Centennial, CO, Delilah (Don) Leiker of Goodland, KS, Debra (Doug) Garber of Sabetha, KS, Jennifer (Scott) Sievers of Centennial, CO, and an AFS daughter Carolina (Mark) Sievers of Missouri City, TX, one brother Paul (Ann) Jacobs of Lakewood, CO and a sister Alverda (Bob) Moellering or Hoxie, KS. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren; Karen Leiker, Kelsy (Mike) Maoudj, Julie (John) Donaldson, Mackenzie Garber, Sarah Sievers, Luke Sievers and Jacob Garber.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland. With a Roasry at 8PM. Cremation will follow. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Elmer will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be designated to the Knights of Columbus or to Hospice Services of Sherman County and may be left at visitation or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

Karen Rae (Wilhelm) Brungardt

Karen Rae (Wilhelm) Brungardt, age 73, of Hays, Kansas passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at Hays Medical Center. She was born August 25, 1945 in Russell, Kansas to Ed and Gertie (Huff) Wilhelm. She married Roy Brungardt on June 25, 1966 in Russell. He preceded her in death August 30, 2018.

Karen was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Smoky Hill Country Club where she was very active in ladies golf. She enjoyed crafts especially silk floral arrangements and jewelry making . Karen was also a very active supporter of TMP-Marian, ARC and the Mary Elizabeth Maternity Home.

She is survived by two sons, Jeff Brungardt and wife Suzanne of Kansas City, Kansas and Kirk Brungardt of Dallas, Texas; three sisters, her twin, Sharon Strecker of Kansas City, Janice Schmidt of Kansas City and Donna Howard of Hawaii; a granddaughter, Katelyn Brungardt in Chicago and a grandson, John Brungardt in KC.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Doris Burris.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67637. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be Friday 5 PM – 7 PM at the funeral chapel.
