Eugenia C. ‘Aunt Genie’ Uhrich

Eugenia C. “Aunt Genie” Uhrich, 90, Hays, died Friday, February 8, 2019 at Via Christi Village.

She was born August 21, 1928 in Collyer, Kansas the daughter of Christian and Mariana (Waldman) Uhrich.

Genie grew up in Collyer and graduated from the parochial high school in Collyer. She was a credit manager for Sears for 34 years in Independence, Missouri and Dallas, Texas, and after retirement worked for a few years for Budget Car Rental. In 1993 she returned to western Kansas, making her home in Hays. For several years she was a volunteer at Hays Medical Center in the Human Resources Department and helped the elderly and disabled with tax preparation. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and was a devout Catholic. Her hobbies included traveling, crocheting, sewing, and playing Solitaire.

She is survived by 51 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers; Frank, Julius, Joe, Leo, George, Cletus, and Alfred Uhrich, and four sisters; Juliana Haffner, Itha Scheck, Mary Uhrich, and Pauline Zimmerman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at 10:30 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, Hays, with Fr. Barry Brinkman officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 pm in the St. Michael’s Cemetery, Collyer. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:30 on Monday and from 9:00 am until 10:15 on Tuesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, Hays. A rosary will be at 6:30pm followed by a parish vigil service at 7:00 pm, both on Monday at the funeral home. Justin ‘George’ Ladenburger

Justin “George” Ladenburger, 89, of Oakley, died Thursday, February 7, 2019, at Colby Health and Rehab. He was born April 18, 1929, in Angelus, Ks, to Peter and Carrie (Wehner) Ladenburger. George met Dorothy Albers and they were married on October 23, 1950 in Angelus. They were married 67 years.

Our Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa enjoyed farming and harvesting his crops; raising cattle, horses, pigs, chickens, geese, and even rabbits. George and his father –in-law Ben, built the home and farm buildings in which they lived with Dorothy for 67 years. He was a Eucharistic minister and a member of the St Joseph’s Church in Oakley; a member of the 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus, also serving as a past Grand Knight.

As a young man he played baseball on Grinnell’s traveling team, then later hit many baseballs in his yard to his kids and grandkids. He and his family spent time riding his horses, Shetland ponies, motorcycles and four wheelers. George played many card games with his family, friends, and Knights of Columbus members. He enjoyed his bowling team, playing horseshoes, fishing and being ornery and joking with anyone he ever met! He never knew a stranger and never missed many farm sales! (aka farm meetings) He liked collecting baseball caps, tractors, and key chains.

George traveled many miles to watch his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in all sorts of events and activities. Dancing was his love, first with his wife, then daughters and granddaughters. George would never let us leave without his hug and “I love you” even if he didn’t win at cards.

George was preceded in death by his parents; Peter and Carrrie (Wehner) Ladenburger; his wife Dorothy (Albers) Ladenburger; his two sisters, Loreena and Bernadette; his four brothers, Richard, Willus, Kenneth, and Maurice and his grandchildren Chad and Scot Ladenburger. Survivors are his children, Dan (Susan) Ladenburger, Randall (Tomaye Hipp) Ladenburger, Kenton (Diane) Ladenburger, Kellie (Bob) Day, Brad (Sharon Reyes) Ladenburger and Melissa (Scott) Stephens; 18 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2019, at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley, with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2019, at St Joseph Catholic Church, Oakley, with burial in the church cemetery. Mary Ann (Wagner) Davis

Mary Ann (Wagner) Davis passed away on February 9, 2019, at the age of 85 years. Mary Ann was born April 28, 1933, in Jefferson County, KS on the family farm to Rudolph and Agnes Wagner.

Mary Ann attended and graduated from Trego Community High School in May 1951. After High school, she worked for JC Penney’s in WaKeeney. She also took classes in Accounting and Spanish from Colby Community Outreach. She was involved with Girl Scouts, County Election, and Eastern Star.

Mary Ann met John W. Davis in 1953 after he brought her younger brother Bob home from baseball practice with a black eye. John and Mary Ann were united in marriage shortly after on June 7, 1953, in WaKeeney. They were married for 64 years before Johnny’s passing on November 4, 2017.

Mary Ann enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and loved watching the Royals on TV. She always looked forward to the trip to Kansas City with Johnny and the Kepferle’s to watch the Royals at Kaufman Stadium and shop at the flea market. Mary Ann raised five daughters all while helping Johnny with his floor covering business. She was very active in all the girls’ school activities, attending games, plays, music concerts as well as summer activities with softball and swimming lessons. She was active in the United Methodist Women, taught Sunday School for many years as well as playing the piano and organ for church services.

Mary Ann is survived by five daughters, Karol and husband Bryce Skelton of Topeka; Peggy Davis of Quinter; Donna Davis of Quinter; Kay and husband Randy King of Scott City; Terry and husband Todd Maddux of Wichita; Robert B. Wagner, AZ; grandchildren, Jeremy Bowers and wife Tori, Myriah Clark and husband Justin, Harrison King, Courtney Maddux, Trace Maddux and Karsyn Maddux; great-grandchildren, Alisyn Bowers, Jack Bowers, Keiran Clark and Rory Clark.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents Rudolph and Agnes Wagner and her younger brother Phil Wagner.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 14, 2019, at Quinter United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in the Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church.

Geneva Ann (Schmidt) Schumacher

Geneva Ann (Schmidt) Schumacher, 75, of Great Bend, Kansas, and formerly of Russell, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Medical Lodge of Great Bend.

Geneva was born May 24, 1943 in Grinnell, Kansas. She was one of four children born to Raymond Joseph and Anna Martha (Wolf) Schmidt. She grew up in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1961 as the Valedictorian of her Class.

Geneva was united in marriage to James Joseph Schumacher on October 7, 1961 at the Catholic Parish in Grinnell. This union was blessed with four children; Rachell, Michael, Bruce and Brian. They lived in Grinnell area a few years before moving to Russell. James preceded her in death in March, 2012. Then in 2015 she moved to Great Bend.

Geneva was a devoted wife and homemaker. She also worked in housekeeping at Alafern Nursing Home in Russell and housekeeping at the Russell Regional Hospital. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Women’s Guild Catholic Charity Association. She enjoyed fishing, collecting antiques and spending time with her family.

Surviving family include her daughter, Rachell Depiesse (Ed) of Lakin, Kansas; three sons, Michael “Tod” Schumacher (Linda) of Raleigh, North Carolina, Bruce Schumacher (Jolana) of Denver, Colorado and Brian Schumacher (Jodi) of Pratt, Kansas; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, husband James, three brothers, Eugene Schmidt, Wilmer “Woody” Schmidt and Clarence “Jess” Schmidt.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, February 14, 2019 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be held from Noon to 5:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7:30 P.M., Wednesday at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Marjorie Marie Graham

Marjorie Marie Graham, 80, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, February 08, 2019, at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell, Kansas.

Marjorie was born on December 03, 1938, in Rural Paradise, Kansas, the daughter of James and Helen (Naylor) Pooley. She grew up in the Paradise, Bunker Hill and North Wilson Lake area and lived in the Russell County area all her life. She graduated from Bunker Hill High School in the class of 1957. She was married to Phillip S. Madden on November 29, 1957, and from this union they were blessed with 4 daughters Cindy, Kimberley, Cathy and Penny.

Years later, Marjorie and Phillip’s marriage ended in divorce. Marjorie found love a second time when she met Thomas Ramsey who was her significant other up until his death. She worked as a cook at the Russell County Hospital and worked at Klema’s Grocery Store for many years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, bingo, playing cards and spending time with her family. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving family include her daughter Cindy Madden of Russell, Kansas, Kimberley Eichman of Palco, Kansas, Cathy Langerman of Wake Forest, North Carolina and Penny Riedel and husband Tom of Russell, Kansas; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother James E. Pooley, sisters Doris Brumley and Roberta Brown and a grandson William Eichman.

A graveside celebration of Marjorie’s life will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Tuesday evening.

Memorials may be given to K-State University Basic Cancer Research and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Deloris Marie Unruh

Deloris Marie Unruh, age 87, passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.

She was born on February 7, 1932 in Greensburg, Kansas, the daughter of Lincoln & Frances Nichols Jantz. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1951 moving from Greensburg, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Scott Mennonite Church in Pence, Kansas.

On May 6, 1951 she married Isaac “Ike” Unruh in Greensburg, Kansas. He Survives.

Survivors include her Husband – Isaac “Ike” Unruh of Scott City, Kansas, One Son – Tom & Lisa Unruh of Spearman, Texas, Three Daughters – Barbara & Ervin Koehn of Scott City, Kansas, Karen & Rick Penner of Swan River, Manitoba, Canada, Joyce & Leland Koehn of Scott City, Kansas, One Brother – Gary & Darlene Jantz of Greeley, Colorado, Three Sisters – Jennie & Calvin Unruh of Greensburg, Kansas, Marian & Verle Litwiller of Barron, Wisconsin, Glenda & Mark Rhodes of Windsor, Colorado, One Sister In Law – Karen Jantz of Fredonia, Kansas, Twenty Seven Grandchildren and Twenty Seven Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, One Brother – Marlin Jantz and One Granddaughter – Michelle Koehn.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at the Scott Mennonite Church in Pence, Kansas with the Franklin Koehn & Richard Koehn presiding.

Memorials may be made to the USA Missions in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.

Dolores M. Lapka

Dolores M. Lapka, 88, passed away on January 26, 2019, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka, Kansas. She was born January 6, 1931, in Great Bend, Kansas to Vincente and Alejandra Gutierrez.

Dolores graduated from high school in 1950. She loved to polka dance, sew, make crafts, collect butterflies, and play Mexican train dominoes. She was also an avid bowler. She was a cub den mother, member of the Sunflower Polka Club and president of her class reunions. She also was a huge KU fan and enjoyed watching tennis.

She was united in marriage to Joseph Lapka, Sr., with this marriage came four children, Joseph Lapka, Jr. of Dodge City, Patricia Logan of Topeka, Marcia Peterson of Las Vegas and Dina Heier and husband Dennis of Quinter; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Daniel Gutierrez and his wife Janet. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vincente and Alejandra Gutierrez; one daughter, Marcia Peterson; four sisters, Norma Mounkes, Lucille Zero, Alberta Delgado and Katie Vesta; and one brothers, Ishmael Gutierrez.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at 3:00 p.m., at the Stone Ridge Country Club in Great Bend.

Anna Martha (Scholz) Klema

Anna Martha (Scholz) Klema, 102, of Russell, Kansas, died on Wednesday, February 06, 2019, at the Homestead Assisted Living Center in Russell, Kansas.

Anna was born on April 19, 1916, in Huron, Kansas, the daughter of George F. and Anna Dorathea (Buttron) Scholz. She grew up in Huron, Kansas, and graduated from Huron High School in 1933. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Kansas State University in 1940. After college she worked as a extension agent for 2 years. She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Dell Klema on February 14, 1943. From this union they were blessed with 4 children Georganna, Dell, Jr., Karleen and Kaye. She joined the United States Navy WAVES for a year as a supervisor of enlisted women.

On June 13, 1965, Anna and Dell received word that Dell’s brother and wife were killed in a tragic plane crash leaving behind 5 sons Frank, Martin, Steven, Michael and Brian. Anna and Dell without hesitation decided to raise the boys as their own and welcomed them into the family. Anna’s primary job was wife, mother and homemaker for her rapidly growing family. She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church of Russell and was a member of the Lutheran Church Women. She was also a member of the American Legion Post #99, Russell Rotary, Elks, Tops, 4-H, Kansas State Campus Ministry, Deines Cultural Center, Russell Historical Society, Russell Hospital Auxiliary, church quilting group, Girl and Boy Scouts. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include daughter Georganna McCrary (Dick), son D. J. Klema, Jr., daughter Karleen J. Wolf (Richard), and daughter Kaye Schlessman (Bill) all of Russell, and sons Martin (Becky) Klema of Ellisville, Missouri, Michael Klema (Kathy) of Lenexa, Kansas and Brian Klema (Mit) of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren Kim Birky, Marc McCrary and Christopher Wolf, Valerie, Courtney, Kelsey and Ian Klema; great grandchildren Jacob McCrary, Ryan and Cole Birky, Azrael, Jordan and Danica Wolf.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dell, sister Pauline Confer, and brothers Gilbert and Karl Scholz; nephews Frank and Steven Klema and a grandson James Wolf.

A celebration of Anna’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 09, 2019, at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Visitation will be from Noon to 8 P.M. on Friday, February 08, 2019, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Friday evening. Barbara Ann Doonan

Barbara Ann Doonan, 72, went to be with her savior on Feb. 7, 2019, passing away at Diversicare of Larned, Larned. She was born Nov. 22, 1946, in Great Bend to Louie & Claudia (Slaton) Doonan.

Barbara was raised for a short time in a small town west of Great Bend called Timken. The family moved to Great Bend in 1959. Barbara graduated with the Great Bend High School Class of 1964. She attended Fort Hays State University and Salt Lake City Business College.

For several years, Barbara was a fill-in secretary for Kelly Girls, however, she could step into any office and fill a position they had. After her divorce when the children were young, Barbara got a job doing waitress jobs, working day and night to support herself and her two kids. Barbara suffered from different illnesses and was force to retire early in life.

Survivors include, one son James Michael Sanders of Fort Worth, Texas; one daughter, Jannea Wright and husband Chris of Arlington, Texas; one brother, David Doonan and wife Becky of Great Bend; one granddaughter, Katie Wright; and two nieces, Amanda Doonan and Angela Doonan. She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place. A Graveside inurnment will take place at a later date at the Great Bend Cemetery.

Lucille E. Dean

Lucille E. Dean, 95, died Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas. She was born July 28, 1923 in Dodge City, Kansas the daughter of Joe & Estella (Cummins) Knobbe.

Lucille moved with her family from Dodge City to Marienthal, Kansas when she was a young child. She attended grade school at Marienthal and high school at Leoti. She worked as the bookkeeper for the Leoti Livestock Sales Co. for many years and was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Leoti.

On January 17, 1969, she married Jack Dean in Reno, Nevada. He died on August 24, 1976. Lucille is also preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers Vern Knobbe and Jess Knobbe; a sister JoAnn Barrows; and a step-daughter Mary Henningson.

Survivors include a brother Larry (Connie) Knobbe of Marienthal, Kansas; a sister Yvonne Schwindt of Ulysses, Kansas; a step-son Richard Dean of Osage Beach, Missouri; 2 step-daughters Patricia Hisel of Nekoosa, Wisconsin and Barbara Rich of Rolla, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews.

A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Leoti. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2019 also at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Leoti with Fr. Timothy Hickey as Celebrant. Burial will follow at the Leoti Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Leoti. The family suggests memorials given to St. Anthony Catholic Church or to the Leoti EMT’s both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Lakin, Kansas.

Kathleen Louise ‘Kathy’ Haselhorst

Kathleen Louise “Kathy” Haselhorst, 68, Hays, died Thursday, February 7, 2019 at HaysMed.

She was born November 7, 1950 in Monterey Park, California the daughter of Joseph and Mildred (Patton) Lefebvre. On April 8, 1967 she was united in marriage to Gilbert Werth. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1995. On November 11, 2000 she was united in marriage to Bernie Haselhorst. She was a housewife or “domestic engineer” as she liked to call it. She was a former member of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers, and a former religion teacher at church. She was a 4-H leader, and a former Ellis County 4-H board member. She enjoyed traveling, landscaping, cooking, sewing, and spending time with and caring for her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Bernie Haselhorst, of the home in Hays, three sons; Christopher L. Werth and wife Angela of Kinsley, Michael J. Werth and wife Charlene of Antonino, and Dallas Haselhorst and wife Dacia of Hays, two daughters; Cynthia M. Pulse and husband Greg of St. George, Kansas, and Wendy Porembski of Overland Park, two brothers; Joe Lefebvre and wife Sydna of Tacoma, WA and Tony Lefebvre and wife Clara of Colwich, a sister; Becky Lefebvre of Colorado Springs, sixteen grandchildren; Shaina Werth, Justine Sperber and husband Chase, Clarissa Werth, Jessica Isaac and husband Eli, Jacob Werth, Phillip Werth, Lauren Benjamin, Carly Benjamin, Jarrett Woofter, Brody Pulse, Matthew Werth, Mason Dean, Gianna Haselhorst, Aria Haselhorst, Ellia Haselhorst, and Ayla Haselhorst, two great grandsons; Xaedin Werth and Jaxson Sperber, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gilbert, a brother Roger Lefebvre, and a sister Linda Lefebvre.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Monday, February 11, 2019 at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Antonino. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in the church cemetery. Viewing will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 10:00 on Monday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm on Sunday at the funeral home. Gary Eugene Withers

Gary Eugene Withers was born January 4, 1945 in Colby, KS to Willard and Norma Jean Withers. He was raised by his mother and step-father, Henry Petersen. Gary passed away February 1, 2019, at the age of 74.

Gary attended school in Rexford, KS and graduated in 1963. He enjoyed basketball in high school and excelled in track, still currently holding the record for the mile race set in 1962 with a time of 4 min and 49 seconds. Gary began working at the Menlo Rexford Coop just out of high school.

On May 29, 1966, he married Mary D. Dible. They celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary last year. In 1967, Gary and Mary bought their farm in Rawlins County from Herman and Maxine Latimer. They raised cattle and pigs and grew crops. Gary loved farming and especially enjoyed his livestock. Later they also custom harvested from Oklahoma to North Dakota.

Gary accepted Jesus as his Savior around 1965 and was a member of the Rexford Community Church. He loved and delighted in his children and grandchildren. Kristi Lynn joined the family in February 1975 and Daniel Eugene join in January 1978. Gary had a good heart and loved helping people.

Gary is survived by his wife, Mary Withers; daughter, Kristi Gray; daughter-in-law, Tammy Withers; brothers: Mike (Kay) Petersen and Skip (Betty) Petersen; sisters: Pat (Bob) Vavricka and Gayle (Preston) Hucks; brother-in-law, Ron (Jeanette) Dible; sister-in-law, Pat (Charles) Williams; six grandchildren; one great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Petersen; step-father, Henry Petersen; son, Daniel Withers and brother, Robert Carl Petersen.

Alvena I. Dewey

Alvena I. Dewey, age 72, of Syracuse, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at her home in Syracuse. She was born April 18, 1946, in Lakin, Kansas, the daughter of Jim and Irene (Hanson) Zahnter.

Alvena grew up in Syracuse and had worked as a waitress, cook, and machinist. She enjoyed reading, watching old western movies, crocheting, sewing, baking, and making homemade noodles. She raised chickens, farm animals, and cared for any stray animals or people that need special attention. Alvena loved nothing more than spending time with her family.

She is survived by her significant other of 32 years, Thomas Simpson of Syracuse; children, Pamela LaCost and husband Duane of Kendall, Wade Dewey of Yazoo City, Mississippi, Kimberly Dewey of Garden City, and Daniel Dewey of Syracuse; brothers, Sonny Murphy of Florida, Chad Zahnter of Kansas, Gordon Zahnter of Great Bend, and Alvin Zahnter of Russell; sisters, Beverly Beer of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Louetta Edwards of Mesquite, Nevada, and Laura Beesley of Tulsa, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Shawn, David, Brand, Colby, Daniel, and Erin; and one great-grandchild, Nicholas.

Alvena is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ron, Herman, and Jimmy; and sister, Wilma.

Memorial service will be at 2:00 PM (MT) on Monday, February 11, 2019, at New Life Fellowship Church in Syracuse, Kansas, with Pastor Bill Roberts officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to Alvena Dewey Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 715, Johnson, Kansas 67855.
