Ruby Binder

Ruby Binder, 94, Munjor, died Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Via Christi Village.

She was born June 4, 1924 in Munjor, Kansas the daughter of Alex W. and Adeline (Leiker) Klaus. On November 25, 1946 she was united in marriage to Paul Binder at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor. He preceded her in death on February 12, 2015.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and the Christian Mothers. She was a charter leader of the Big Creek Astro 4-H club, a junior leader and sewing leader of the 4-H club, and an Ellis County 4-H council member. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, sewing, and quilting, and did extensive genealogy for the Binder, Klaus, Leiker, Goetz, and Engel families. She was an excellent cook and baker and hosted many family gatherings in her home and opened her home to many family members and visitors.

Survivors include three sons; Ernest J. Binder and wife Lillian of Munjor, Stephen F. Binder and wife Carolyn of Washington, Missouri, and Thomas P. Binder and wife Mary Beth of Marion, Iowa, a daughter; Margaret Ann Schaffer and husband Willie of Hoxie, a brother; Joseph Klaus and wife Janet of Hays, two sisters; Lillian Schlyer of Hays and Violet Mermis and husband Robert of Salina, ten grandchildren; Elliot Binder, Preston Binder, Stephanie Howie and husband Tom, Tami Chievous and husband Derrick, Jennifer Binder, Julie Binder, Joe Binder and wife Carola, Annie Binder, Katie Trautman and husband Adam, and Peter Binder, seven great grandchildren; Braydon Binder, Tahki, Malia, and Aven Chievous, Ruby Binder, Paul Binder, and Maria Binder, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul, a brother Walter Klaus and wife Bernice, and a sister Velma Pfannenstiel and husband Julius.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 5, 2018 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor with Fr. Jarret Konrade officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 and on Tuesday from 9:00 am until 9:40, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A Christian Mothers rosary will be at 6:00 pm followed by a vigil service at 6:30, both on Monday at the funeral home.

Betty J. Gerstner, age 88, of Hays, KS, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019 in Hays.

Steven Henry Nagel

Steven Henry Nagel, age 77, passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.

He was born on December 30, 1941 in Ellsworth, Kansas, the son of Eilert Henry & Virginia Noble Nagel. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1976 moving from Sharon Springs, Kansas he was a retired truck driver for Seaboard Farms, Inc.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas and was a US Air Force Veteran.

On June 9, 1969 he married Elsie A. Hansley Griffin in Durant, Oklahoma. She survives.

Survivors include his Wife – Elsie A. Nagel of Scott City, Kansas, Five Sons – Lyle Nagel of Scott City, Kansas, Donald & Rhonda Griffin of Garden City, Kansas, Paul & Laurie Griffin of Amarillo, Texas, Steven Griffin of Salina, Kansas, Stacy & Glenda Griffin of Garden City, Kansas, One Brother – Roland Nagel of Great Bend, Kansas, One Sister – Laura Martin of Portland, Oregon, Sixteen Grandchildren and Fourteen Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, One Son – Eilert Samuel Nagel, One Brother – Keith Nagel, One Sister – Cinda Becker and One Grandson – Jeremy Griffin.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas with the Rev. Kyle Evans Presiding.

Lucille Davis

Lucille Davis, 89, passed away January 31, 2019 at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born April 24, 1929 at Hays, to Anton Fredrick & Mary (Pfeifer) Meis. She married Richard Lewis Davis on December 31, 1947 at Garden City. He died October 6, 2007.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Lucille was a homemaker. She loved gardening, cooking, sewing and reading. She was an excellent wife, mother, grandmother and gave the best hugs.

Survivors include, one son, Richard Davis, Jr. and wife Mary of Great Bend; three daughters, Patricia Skelton of Great Bend, Deborah Durler and partner Jim VanDyke of Branson, Missouri and Cynthia Carter of Great Bend; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Mary Meis; her husband, Richard Davis; three brothers, Fred Meis, Gilbert Meis, Albert Meis; and three sisters, Agnes Meis, Mary Staab, Ida Kuhn.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sun. Feb. 3, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Mon., Feb. 4, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Kindred Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Mary Catherine ‘Kay’ Wellbrock

Mary Catherine “Kay” Wellbrock, age 81, former Hays, Kansas resident died Friday, January 25, 2019, at Select Specialty Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Funeral Services at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 23, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas. Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

Rosalie Valnet (Snow) Seemann

Rosalie Valnet (Snow) Seemann, Colby, passed away on February 1, 2019 at Citizens Medical Center, Colby, Kansas.

Rosalie was the 8th child and 4th daughter of Harry Monroe and Ora Rachel Power Snow. She was born on September 5, 1934 in rural Bow Creek Township of Phillips County, Kansas. When she was 1 year old the family moved to a farm 11 miles north and 1 east of Agra, where she attended Country Schools Norton and Gooder. Rosalie worked for several neighbors and eventually moved to Kensington to work where she met her future husband Ernst (Ernie) Seemann. They were married in St. John’s Lutheran Church at Kensington, Kansas on September 10th, 1950.

Rosalie was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on March 25, 1951 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Kensington, Kansas. She then transferred her membership to Our Savior’s of Brewster in April 1959.

Rosalie and Ernie were the parents of three children born in Smith Center, Kansas. Their 4th child was born in Colby, Kansas. Her children are Craig Allen, Gary Linn, Lisa Marie and Kelly Blayne.

In February 1959 the family moved to Levant, Kansas where Ernie was a grain elevator manager. Rosalie worked for Ernie for 18 summers.

For several years Rosalie worked at different places in Colby and in 1974 accepted a challenge to run for Thomas County Clerk, a position she held for 25 years. During her tenure as County Clerk she served on many different organizations:

Thomas County Council on Aging
All offices of the Northwest Kansas Clerk/Appraisers Association
All offices of the Kansas County Clerk’s Association, serving as President in 1995
Rosalie served on the KCAMP Board for 10 years, an organization insurance pools for counties, she served all offices of this organization
½ of the Levant Walking Team
Board member and President of Genesis, the local food bank

One of the things Rosalie enjoyed was helping the elderly with various tax associations, going to their homes to assist them.

After Rosalie retired October 1, 1999, she became a Sliver Haired Legislator for Thomas County serving nearly 10 years. She also served on the Board of Trustees of Citizens Medical Center for 9 years

She has also served on the Area Agency on Aging Board of Directors since October 1999.
In her later years, thanks to granddaughter Adrea, Rosalie became an avid KU basketball supporter attending games in Lawerence Ks, Ames Iowa, Lubbock Texas and Boulder, Colorado.

Rosalie has been a member of the Lutheran Church since 1951, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Her favorite scriptures were from Ecalastics stating a time for everything,

Rosalie enjoyed many things in life, her family, singing with the kids while driving somewhere, (they might not remember), her God, her flowers and flower gardens, many of her flowers are in various gardens around Northwest Kansas, meeting new friends and sewing. All of her children and grandchildren have quilts she made for them.

Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2007, brothers Chester, Leonard, Orland Dale, Darrell, Guy, Kenneth, Terry and Denny. Sisters Cleora and Oneita, nephew Rodney Snow, neices Michelle Snow Killian and Judy Jay. A great nephew and three great neices and one great-great niece.

She is survived by her children Craig of Colby, Gary (Joy) of Great Bend, Lisa (Albert) Ree of Schoenchen and Kelly (Lori) of Amarillo, Texas. Grandchildren Jenni (Mark) Penka of Dighton, Eric (Whitney) Seemann of New Braunfels, Texas, Amanda (Nate) Franklin of Atwood, KS, Brian (Wendy) Seemann of Manhattan, KS, JC Zahradnik (Beth) of Anthony, KS, JT (Becca) Zahradnik of Muscatine, Iowa, Adrea (Shawn) Katzenmeier of Wichita, Kansas, Taylor Ree of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Halsey, Faith and Alli Seemann of Amarillo, Texas and Dakota Hiebert of Wichita Falls, Texas. Great grandchildren Kierstyn, Kierra and Brody Penka, Noah Seemann, Camden and Corbin Franklin, Jackson and Brooklyn Katzenmeier, Clarksly, Carter, and Monroe Zahradnik, Genevieve, Isaiah and Juliet Zahradnik and Bradley Hiebert. She is also survived by one sister Darlene Fuller, sisters-in-law NoElla Snow of Doniphan, Nebraska, Wanda Snow of Agra, Kansas and Velma Snow of Phillipsburg, Kansas, Pauline (Wendell) Gardner, Tuscon, Arizona, plus many family members and friends.

Nancy J. Farr

Nancy J. Farr, age 75, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.

She was born on November 26, 1943 in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Lester and Inez Persons Dillon. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1974 moving from Colby, Kansas, she was a house cleaner.

She was a member of the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Scott City, Kansas. Nancy donated her body to KU Medical Center for research.

Survivors include her One Son – Courtney Farr of Eudora, Kansas, One Daughter in Law – Tamra Wilkens of Eudora, Kansas, One Granddaughter – Sierra Wilkens of Eudora, Kansas and Several Nieces & Nephews.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, One Son – Justin Farr and One Brother – Richard Dillon.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at a later date and time.

Chuck Carper

Chuck Carper, 69, passed away Jan. 29, 2019 at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City. He was born June 21, 1949 at Palo Alto, Cal. to James Victor & Mildred (Beach) Carper. He married Geraldine Ruble Feb. 3, 1973 at Great Bend. She survives.

Having previously resided in LaCrosse, Dodge City and Garden City, Chuck has been a Great Bend resident since 2007. He was employed for many years in truck sales and service, having recently worked for Doonan Peterbilt of Great Bend. Chuck was an avid golfer and sports fan, played slow pitch softball and enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. He loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandkids.

Survivors include, his wife, Geraldine “Gerri” Carper of the home; one son, Brett Carper and his wife Kari of Great Bend; one daughter, Jennifer Fischer and her husband Tom of Hudson; two sisters, Vicki Kerns and her husband Steve of Maize and Tammi Jo Sramek and her husband Joe of LaCrosse; three grandchildren, Braylee Carper, Brecklynn Carper and Braxton Fischer. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mildred Carper; and infant twin grandsons, Austin and Wyatt Fischer.

There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019 at Grace Community Church in Great Bend, with Pastor Jay Beuoy and Pastor Don Paden presiding. Inurnment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse. Memorials are suggested to the FHSU Foundation to benefit the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Gordon M. McCauley

Gordon M. McCauley passed away on January 29, 2019 at Solomon Valley Manor in Stockton, Kansas at the age of 91. He was born on August 23, 1927 in rural Rooks County, KS to Homer and Hilda (Moore) McCauley. Gordon was united in marriage to Delpha Keiswetter on July 22, 1951 in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Gordon served in the Navy during World War II. He then went on to graduate from Kansas State University in 1949 with his bachelor’s degree in Physical Science with a major in Geology. He spent 45 years in the construction industry, 13 years of which he and his wife owned their own company in Arkansas. He retired towards the end of 1994 as a Division Manager for Allied, Inc. of Hays.

Gordon was a member of Shriners and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He enjoyed fishing, hunting for fossils, and loved the outdoors. He also enjoyed watching sporting events.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Delpha of the home; sons Doug McCauley of Lawrence and Gary McCauley of Fort Collins, CO; and granddaughter Hannah Kate McCauley of Lawrence, KS.

He is preceded in death by his parents Homer and Hilda; and brother Harold McCauley.

Blaine Kincaid Smith

Blaine Kincaid Smith, 26, of Salina, went to be with our Lord Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019. Blaine was born June 24, 1992, in Salina, to Kristina Brin and Shawn Smith.

Blaine graduated from Salina South High School in 2010. He was a four-time state placer and two-time state champion wrestler. He went on to wrestle at Ohio Valley University, and Iowa Lakes Community College. His wrestling career taught him discipline and brought him great joy. He continued to train and mentor young wrestlers during his short life. Blaine touched more lives than he could ever comprehend.

Blaine was an ornery soul who never met a stranger. Blaine’s infectious smile and positive attitude won over so many. When you were Blaine’s friend, you were a friend for life. He took tremendous joy in spending time with his family, his son, Paxton and many friends. He loved big and played hard. Blaine lived a life of honor and loyalty to others. No matter what life threw his way, he tackled each obstacle with a wink and a smirk.

He leaves behind dozens of people that he truly loved and they all adored him: his son, “Pac-man” Paxton Smith; his partner for life, Meredith Frazier and her son Jack; his mother, who never ever gave up on him, Kristina Brin; John Munoz, the loving supportive father he craved; his sisters, Brooke Smith (fiance, Jarret Jones) of Loveland, Colo., and Blaque and Baylee Brin of Salina; siblings from his father’s side, Gracelyn and Camden Stewart of Elkhorn, Neb., and Khyra, Gage, and Ethan Smith of Wichita; grandmothers, Louetta Albers and Henrietta Smith of Salina; nephew, Tayden Jones; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by: his father, Shawn Smith; and grandfathers, Leroy Albers and Steve Smith.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m., and sharing memories at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at First Baptist Church, 843 Lewis Ave, Salina.

Mary Cynthia ‘Cindi’ (Graves) Rummel

Mary Cynthia “Cindi” (Graves) Rummel was born in Atwood, Kansas on March 31, 1952, the youngest of five children born to Byron “Bike” Graves and Hazel (McGowan) Graves. She departed this life on January 30, 2019, at the Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood, Kansas, at the age of 66 years, 9 months and 30 days.

The family moved to Colorado, then returned to Atwood, where Cindi graduated from Atwood High School in 1970. She attended Colby Community College for one year.

On June 25, 1971, she was united in marriage to Kenneth “Kenny” Rummel. To this union two sons, Brandon and Brett, were born.

She was employed as a clerk at Ace Hardware, then part-time at Midwest Energy before becoming employed as a para at Atwood Grade School for 13 years and then retired from her working career after 20 years of being employed in the treasurer’s office at the Rawlins County Courthouse.

She enjoyed being around people and her many friends, but her real love was spending time with her family. She also enjoyed playing golf, fishing in her early years, cheering for the Denver Broncos, going for rides and being a homemaker.

Preceding her in death were her father, Bike; mother, Hazel; brothers, Jerry and Jim and sister, Patti. Those remaining to cherish her memory are: husband, Kenny, of the home; sons, Brandon and wife Tami, of Hays, KS and Brett, of Winona, KS; brother, Tom and wife, Pat, of Grand Junction, CO; grandson Payton Ruder, of Manhattan, KS; other relatives and many friends.
