Wanda Irene (Lewis) Heronemus

Wanda Irene (Lewis) Heronemus passed peacefully into the arms of Our Lord on Friday, October 11, 2019, in Boise, Idaho.

Born near Amy, Kansas, December 27, 1928, to Charles and Stella (Williams) Lewis, she graduated from Dighton High School, going on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree from West Texas State University and Master’s Degree from Northern Arizona University. She taught elementary school in Gallup, New Mexico, Bayfield, Colorado, and Window Rock, Arizona, with her career spanning more than 25 years, and was a member of the ADK Sorority, an educator’s service organization. She was always an active member of church wherever she lived.

Wanda married Alvin C. Heronemus in August, 1949 and celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss before his passing in 2000. She enjoyed gardening and softball, playing as the pitcher for the CIC Falcons in Gallup, New Mexico for five years. She is survived by her children, Clifford A. Heronemus, Gallup, New Mexico, Sherry (Heronemus) Dees, Los Banos, California, and James N. Heronemus, Boise, Idaho, five grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alvin C. Heronemus, her siblings Ivan C. Lewis, Dean Lewis, Lyle Lewis, Dale Lewis, Glenn Lewis, Wesley Lewis, Chester Lewis, Thelma (Lewis) Pickerell, Doyle Martindale, and Edra (Martindale) Miller.

There will be a luncheon at Dighton United Methodist Church, 140 E. Vine Street, Dighton, at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, October 19, 2019, with graveside services to follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Dighton Cemetery, Dighton, Kansas.

Robert ‘Bob’ LeRoy Balloun

Robert “Bob” LeRoy Balloun, 91 of Russell, Kansas, died on Monday, October 14, 2019, at his home in Russell.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, October 18, 2019, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Ketchens officiating. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell, Kansas, with the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 performing military honors. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, October 17, 2019, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Thursday evening.

Karl Albert Newacheck

Karl Albert Newacheck, 87, of Russell, Kansas, died on Monday, October 14, 2019, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

A celebration of Karl’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 21, 2019, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating. Visitation will be from 1 P.M. to 8 P.M. Sunday, October 20, 2019, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 3 P.M. to 5 P.M. Sunday afternoon.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be given to the Big Creek Veterinary Clinic and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Elaine J. Mooney

Agra resident Elaine J. Mooney passed away Oct. 13, 2019 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 73. She was born Jan. 23, 1946 in Kensington, the daughter of Irwin & Thelma (Diercks) Sims.

Survivors include her mother, Thelma Sims of Phillipsburg; 2 sons, Doug Molzahn of Agra & Dan Molzahn of Esbon; her daughter, Angel Miner of Agra; 9 grandchildren & 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Becky Saddler officiating. Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Wed. & 9:00 to 9:00 Thurs. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.

Ralph Joseph Nothstine

Ralph Joseph Nothstine, 71, passed away October 8, 2019 at his home, Burdett, Kansas.

He was born December 16, 1947 in Columbus, Ohio. The son of Robert Alfred and Ruth Roberta Dixon Nothstine. He was a resident of Burdett for approximately 13 years, moving from Colorado. He was a retired Command Sargent Major for the United States Army.

After graduating High School Ralph entered the United States Army January 18, 1966, served his first tour in Vietnam, returned to Vietnam for a second tour in 1970. He was medically discharged August 8, 1987 and officially retired as a Command Sargent Major with many military awards, two recommendations for the Medal of Honor, Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, Air Medal, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab amongst many others.

He was of the Christian Faith, his hobbies consisted of, woodworking and antique furniture restoration, he was fascinated with bald eagles and the American flag and also loved to sing.

He married Carol Pryor and later married Connie Nothstine; both survive.

Other survivors include; his children, Dominga Carbajal, AZ, Fred Nothstine, FL, Brett Nothstine, WA, Theresa Carbajal, AZ, Angelica Sanders, TX, Toni Morss, KS, Rachel Rohkohl, AZ, Lisa Noble, CO and Jason Nothstine, CO; his sister, Karen Foraker, OH and a step-sister, Teresa Wilson, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Graveside Service with Military Honors will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019 at Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett, KS with Pastor Doug Ellison presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Inurnment will be in Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett, Kansas.

Leland N. Smith

Leland N. Smith, age 89, passed away October 11, 2019 at Great Plains Health, in North Platte, Nebraska.

He was born to Theodore and Mildred (Hanchett) Smith-Elling in Rural Selden, Kansas on July 7, 1930. He was raised in rural Selden and Oberlin. Leland attended elementary school at Belleview Rural School and graduated from Decatur Community High School with the class of 1949. After graduation, he served his country by entering the United States Air Force during the Korean War. On August 31, 1952, he married Eloise Anderson at the Lund Covenant Church, Dresden, Kansas. Leland and Eloise celebrated 67 years of marriage. They raised two children, Marie and Wesley. Leland worked as a carpenter and helped build several houses in the Oberlin area. Leland and his son built the house where the family lives. Leland became a farmer and rancher and worked at it the rest of his life. He was a member of the Oberlin Covenant Church, American Legion Post #70, and Oberlin Country Club.

Leland and his family lived in rural Decatur County and in Oberlin. Leland loved to farm, and he wanted his children to learn the value of hard work. Besides work, Leland’s passion included bowling and golf. In 1984, Leland had open heart surgery to repair two valves. Leland’s surgeon told him if he survived ten years, he would invite him to play golf at Cherry Hills Country Club. Leland surprised his surgeon by surviving another thirty-five years.

Leland is survived by his wife Eloise of Oberlin; daughter, Marie Stapleton and her husband, John of Aurora, Colorado; son, Wesley Smith of Oberlin; grandchildren, Brian Smith, Lisa Johnson, and her husband Gary, and Jason Warren, and great grand-daughter, Nichole Warren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Smith and Mildred Smith-Elling; brother, Clayton Smith; sisters, Melba Hartley, Theodora May Reber, and her husband Johnny; sister-in-law, Phyllis Klich and her husband Jim Klich.

A Funeral Service is planned for Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin, Kansas at 2:30 P.M. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. until 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Pauls Funeral Home prior to the service. The family will greet friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time. Online condolences may be left at www.paulsfh.com . Leila M. Rhoads

Leila M. Rhoads, 101, of Osborne, KS died Monday, October 14, 2019, at Parkview Care Center in Osborne, KS.

She was born in Perry, IA on April 5, 1918 to Goldie (Martens) and John W. Vandeventer.

Leila worked as a cook in restaurants and as well as doing child care.

She is survived by a daughter, Darlene Miller, of Osawatomie, KS, and 3 grandchildren.

Leila was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in 1999 and 3 daughters.

Roxana Lee Nichols

Roxana Lee Nichols, age 69, Osborne, KS, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2019 at Salina Regional Health Center. Roxana was born March 13, 1950 in Lindsborg, KS, to Roy and Rose (Davis) Frisbee.

Roxana graduated from Smith Center High School with the Class of 1968. On June 2, 1968 she married Robert Nichols and they were married for 33 years. Together they lived in various cities throughout Kansas and Missouri as Robert’s career with General Motors had the family moving around the Midwest. In 1987 they moved their family to the Osborne community. Roxana was a bookkeeper and clerk at Swank Standley Motors and prior to retirement worked at Hardware Hank’s. She loved interacting with the community and helping people find creative solutions to their home improvement needs. During her retirement years, Roxana enjoyed spending time with her three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Tyler Nichols; parents, Roy and Rose Frisbee; her sister, Romona Cox.

She is survived by her daughter, Nicole Nichols and husband, Ryan Jensen of Cave Creek, AZ; son, Eric Nichols and wife Julie of Salina, KS; 3 grandchildren.

Janet B. Lemon

Janet B. Lemon, age 78 of Plainville, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2019 at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville. She was born in Athol, Kansas on May 23, 1941 to Arnold and Hilda (Nonamaker) Mueller. She grew up in Athol and attended and graduated from Kensington High School. She was united in marriage to Richard Lemon on September 24, 1960 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Athol. To this union, Ty, Monica, and Stacey were born.

Janet worked at Arnhold’s Furniture until her retirement. In her free time she enjoyed quilting and sewing. Her family was her passion. She enjoyed learning about her more distant family through genealogy, and spending time with her close family, especially her grandkids.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Lemon of the home in Plainville; son, Ty (Brenda) Lemon of Chapman, KS; daughters, Monica Ebbert of Wakeeny, KS, and Stacey (Pat) Dujakovich of Kansas City, MO; brother, Leland (Thelma) Mueller of Smith Center, KS; sister, Shirley Rudolph of Mankato, KS; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Hilda Mueller; sister, Wanda Bandt; son-in-law, Kim Ebbert; and brother-in-law, Bill Rudolph.

Janet will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but the celebration of her life and memories will never be forgotten. For to each one of us who had the privilege of knowing and loving her, she leaves a legacy of true kindness, deep caring, and devoted love.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at the Plainville Cemetery. A book signing will be held at the funeral home in Plainville on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM.

David Walter Duff

David Walter Duff, age 75, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on February 26, 1944 in Enid, Oklahoma, the son of Charles and Kathryn Stark Duff. A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, he was the owner and operator of Beef Belt Feeders for over 40 years.

He attended Prairie View Church of the Brethren in Friend, Kansas and was a member of NRA, Kansas Livestock Association and Alpha Kappa Lambda. David was a graduate of Shallow Water School where he was a member of the cross county team for 3 years taking 2 State Championships.

On December 24, 1982 he married Valarie Harris in Sharon Springs, Kansas. She passed away on August 31, 2019 in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include his One Son – Darren & Kris Duff of Scott City, Kansas, Two Daughters – Gina & Michael Rodriguez of Dodge City, Kansas, Dina Craft of Scott City, Kansas, Two Brothers – Craig & Mickey Duff of Scott City, Kansas, Richard & Susan Duff of Scott City, Kansas, One Sister – Deva & Ed Cupp of Scott City, Kansas, Ten Grandchildren and Four Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife – Valarie Duff and One Son – Daryl Duff.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Prairie View Church of the Brethren in Friend, Kansas with Pastor Jon Tuttle presiding.

Inurnment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Memorials can be made out to the David Duff Scholarship Fund for Scott County Hospital CNA’s in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Ross Eric Fabin

Ross Eric Fabin, 58, passed away October 12, 2019, at his home in Great Bend. He was born September 13, 1961, to George E. and Jeannette (Ruggels) Fabin.

A lifetime Great Bend and Ellinwood resident, Ross was the owner and operator of All Things Chopped in Great Bend, fulfilling his lifelong love of motorcycles. He was also a drug and alcohol counselor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors.

Survivors include, his father, George Fabin of Great Bend; three brothers, Mark Fabin of Salina, Craig Fabin and wife Rita of Kansas City, MO, and Brad Fabin of Angola, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeannette Fabin.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 19, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home.

Memorials have been suggested to the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Recreation for the benefit of Cheyenne Bottoms, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Gerald Lee Ambrosier

Gerald Lee Ambrosier, 72, passed away October 12, 2019 surrounded by his daughters Tammy and Becky. Gerald was born January 23, 1947 in Graham County, Kansas, to Alva and Doris (Hendershot) Ambrosier. He was one of eight children.

Gerald attended school in Hill City and spent his entire life in Graham County. On May 25, 1968, he married Carmen Clary. The couple were blessed with two daughters, Tammy and Becky. They later divorced. Gerald owned his own business for a time, Gerald’s Backhoe and Roustabout Service. Later, he farmed for area farmers and worked in the oilfield.

In Gerald’s younger years, he was a member of the Pioneer Saddle Club and a volunteer fireman. Special times included taking his girls to the rodeo, every night. Trips to New Jersey to visit Tammy were highlights for Gerald as they travelled to surrounding cities sightseeing. Becky, Dale and granddaughter Emma were his fishing buddies usually at Swank Lake.

Gerald was always available to help Becky and Dale at a moment’s notice and at times took care of the house and the yard while the family was gone. He could also be seen

assisting her with the gardening, more so when it came to picking the produce raised! Gerald enjoyed gambling particularly with his sister, Helen in Oklahoma. This past summer, Gerald and Sharon took a trip to Colorado to visit some of her family. He especially enjoyed family reunions and the many shenanigans with his nieces and nephews and all the family.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Alva and Doris; two sisters: Helen and Pauline, and three brothers: Gene, Dennis, and Robert.

He is survived by his daughters: Tammy Ambrosier of Pennington, New Jersey and Becky Schulz and husband Dale of Hill City, and longtime companion Sharon Goffinski, Hill City; two brothers: Darrell and wife Pat of Almena and Eldon and wife Betty of Norton; granddaughter, Emma Schulz of Hill City; grandsons: Micah and wife Maddie Schulz of Durham, North Carolina and David Achterberg, Wausau, Wisconsin and many others who considered him grandpa and numerous nieces and nephews. Gerald will be missed by all who knew him.
