Mildred A. Brauer

Mildred A. Brauer, 101, La Crosse, Kansas, died Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Mrs. Brauer was born December 15, 1917, in Rozel, Kansas, the daughter of Henry W. and Katherine B. (Both) Ideker. She was a resident of La Crosse, Kansas, since 1977, moving there from Albert, Kansas. A 1936 graduate of Rozel High School, Rozel, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

On January 4, 1942, she married Warren “Jack” Price at Tacoma, Washington. He preceded her in death November 12, 1943, while serving with the United States Army in the North Africa area during World War II.

On January 25, 1948, she married Paul J. Brauer at the First Christian Church, Larned, Kansas. He preceded her in death February 28, 2007.

Survivors include: one son, Dennis R. Brauer, Dodge City, Kansas; two daughters, Norma J. Edwards, La Crosse, Kansas, and Sharon F. McKown, Hutchinson, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Clarence Grover, Nebraska, Kimberly Corsair, La Crosse, Kansas, Jordon Schneider, Hays, Kansas, Chelsey McCarroll, Bentley, Kansas, Brenda Grant, Winfield, Kansas, Krissondra Rydzel, Kansas City, Missouri, and Alicia Boor, Hoisington, Kansas; ten great grandchildren, Jacob Grover, Kelsey Grover, Cody Grover, Jorja Grover, Wyatt Corsair, Chance Corsair, Kylie McCarroll, Trinity McCarroll, Connor Boor, and Declan Rydzel; and one brother Lester H. Ideker, La Crosse, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; one daughter in law, Rosa Brauer; one brother Vernon F. Ideker; one infant brother, Velmer H. Ideker; and two sisters, Evelyn F. Blattner, and Rosella A. Smith.

Visitation will be Friday, January 25, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas.

Church visitation will be Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:20 A.M. at the First Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 10:30 A.M. at the First Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Phyllis Burdge officiating.

Interment will be Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 3:00 P.M. in Christ the King Lutheran Cemetery, Dodge City, Kansas.

JoAnn Doud

JoAnn Doud was born June 7, 1947 to Carlos F. Bingesser and Marjorie L. Sheahon Bingesser at her home at Waconda Springs, Kansas. JoAnn departed this life Monday January 21, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Hospital (Kearney, NE) following a tragic fall on the ice at the family farm. JoAnn grew up at Waconda Springs and attended St. Theresa Catholic Grade School, graduating from Cawker City High School in 1965. She attended Fort Hays State University for one year before meeting her husband of 52 years, Eldon Alfred Doud. On July 30, 1966 JoAnn and Eldon were married and made their home at the family farm West of Mankato. They were blessed with four children Gregory, Natalie, Ashley, and Amanda.

JoAnn always felt that her greatest joy and accomplishment was the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom. Once her youngest started school, JoAnn began working at the Buffalo Roam Steakhouse. For over twenty years she was known as a friendly familiar face to her fellow county residents as well as a wonderful lady that took a special interest in the folks just passing through. JoAnn enjoyed substitute teaching in the Mankato school district and over the years served Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Esbon and St. Theresa Catholic Church in Mankato in many ways, especially teaching religious education and shaping the faith of children of all ages.

JoAnn was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who took great pride in her children’s and grandchildren’s successes always making a special effort to be there to cheer them on in their activities and sporting events. She made a lasting impression on everyone she met and wasn’t shy about sharing her passion for politics. JoAnn will be remembered for being affectionate, fun loving, an amazing mom, a hard working farm wife and always interested in trying new things and traveling. She had so many special gifts including cooking, gardening and sharing her faith. JoAnn was an active member of the Ladies Guild, and Red Hat Society.

Left to mourn her passing with the faith in knowing that she is with our Lord in heaven is her husband Eldon of rural Mankato, her son Gregg (Pennye) Doud, Abigail and Aidan of Lothian, MD; her daughter Natalie (Mark) Post, Hunter, Taryn, Trayton, of Manhattan, KS; her daughter Ashley (Jay) Carlgren, Chas, Cav, Carlie of Norway, KS; her daughter Amanda (Josh) Heitman, Kale, Brynn, Lana of Cary, NC; her brother Jon Bingesser of Beloit, KS, her sister Jeanie Walter of rural Cawker City, KS and her brother Jay Bingesser of Cawker City, KS. JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jere Brian.

A celebration of Christian Burial for JoAnn Doud will be Saturday, January 26, 2018, at 10:00 A.M., at the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Father David Michael, celebrant. Music was performed by Mrs. Natalie Post and Mr. Frank Schmeidler. Casket bearers were Hunter Post, Trayton Post, Aidan Doud, Kale Heitman, Chas Carlgren, and Cav Carlgren. The gifts were presented by Abigail Doud, Taryn Post, Brynn Heitman, Carlie Carlgren, and Lana Heitman. Burial will be in the Esbon Cemetery, Esbon, Kansas. Vigil service will be Friday, January 25, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Theresa’s Church, Mankato, Kansas. Virgil Manuel Ortiz

Virgil Manuel Ortiz, 81, of Garden City, Kansas died Tuesday January 22, 2019 in Garden City, Kansas. He was born in Walsenburg, Colorado on November 25, 1937 the son of Benjamin and Theresa Ortiz.

Virgil was born, raised and graduated from High School in Walsenburg, Colorado. In 1959 he married Patricia Smith and they went on to have three children, Ben, Peggy, and Virgil Manuel Ortiz, Jr. He worked for Palmer Manufacturing for many years. His hobbies included fishing and spending time with his family and beloved Chihuahua, Gwen.

He was preceded in death by his Wife-Patricia; Son-Virgil Manuel Ortiz, Jr.; Brothers-Eddie & Ben Ortiz & Parents-Benjamin and Theresa Ortiz.

Survivors include Ben (Iva) Ortiz of Garden City; Peggy Raub of Leoti; 7 Grandchildren; 14 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild.

Eva Ruth (Yoder) Dillon

Eva Ruth (Yoder) Dillon, beloved daughter of Charles and Elva (Wilcox) Yoder, was born in Yale, Oklahoma on September 20, 1944, and was blessed to spend her final days with her loving family at her son’s home in Phillipsburg, Kansas where she peacefully passed away on January 22, 2019, at the age of 74.

Eva moved with her family to Chase, Kansas, in 1952 and graduated from Chase High School. Eva married Chuck Babcock in 1962 and to this union four children were born. Eva later married the love of her life, LeRoi Dillon on February 3, 1996 and gained four more wonderful children. They made their home in Norton and Nickerson, Kansas, before moving to their home in Logan, Kansas.

Eva enjoyed camping and crafting, but her favorite time was spent with her family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include: eight children, Diane, and husband, Steve Bliss, Logan, Kansas; James, and wife, Jama Babcock, Kechi, Kansas; Allan, and wife, Deanna Babcock, Lenora, Kansas; Steven, and wife, Christy Babcock, Phillipsburg, Kansas; Wayne, and wife, Marcia Dillon, Hutchinson, Kansas; Annora, and husband, Rick Matzek, Kearney, Nebraska; James, and wife, Michelle Dillon, Kansas City, Missouri; Patricia, and husband, Lee Dreher, Drexel, Missouri; three brothers, Bob, and wife, Doris Yoder, Fort Worth, Texas; Don Weaver, Phoenix, Arizona; Charlie, and wife, Gale Yoder, Hutchinson, Kansas; one sister, Eve, and husband, Jon Wyatt, Norton, Kansas; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; several other relatives and friends.

The Rev. F. Michael “Pastor Mike” Underwood

The Rev. F. Michael “Pastor Mike” Underwood, age 71, passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 in Leoti, Kansas. Mike was born February 24, 1947 in Larned, Kansas, the son of Floyd William & Joan Lynette (DeWitt) Underwood. A resident of Tribune, Kansas since 1979, he graduated from Southwestern Assembly of God College in Waxahachie, Texas in 1977 and faithfully served as Pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Tribune, Kansas, retiring on February 24, 2013.

Mike was a member of the Assembly of God Church and a former member of the Greeley County Ministerial Alliance, both in Tribune, Kansas. In retirement, Mike loved watching wildlife. The birds and squirrels in the yard and neighborhood gave him great joy. He also became quite a artist in his later years.

On October 11, 1965 he married Barbara F. Bachman in South Hutchinson, Kansas.

Mike’s surviving family includes – His wife – Barbara Underwood of Tribune, Kansas, Three children and their spouses – Michael Theodore & Brandi Underwood of Garden City, Kansas, Gina Beth & Dewayne Bond of Tribune, Kansas, Charles Ryan & Jennifer Underwood of Salina, Kansas, One sister – Linda & Terry McGuire of Mulvane, Kansas, Five grandchildren – Chelsey & Aaron Hoover of Salina, Kansas, Bailey Underwood of Salina, Kansas, Austin Underwood of Garden City, Kansas, Jacob Underwood of Garden City, Kansas, A great granddaughter – Olivia Ryann Hoover of Salina, Kansas, and numerous members of his church family.

Due to major construction at the Assembly of God Church, funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM (MDT) Monday, January 28, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Tribune, Kansas with Pastor Justin Sherer officiating.

Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery in Tribune, Kansas.

Friends may call from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm Saturday and Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Tribune, Kansas.

Sharon Gerber

Sharon Gerber, age 77, of Beloit, Kansas formerly of Ellis, Kansas passed away Monday, January 21, 2019 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit.

She was born June 11, 1941 in Hays to Dale H. and Delores M. (Rupp) Henderson. She graduated from Ellis High School in 1959. On December 28,1968 she married Ted A. Gerber in Hays, Kansas. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1997.

Sharon had worked as a CNA, CMA and a dietary aide for the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the VFW Auxiliary both of Ellis. She enjoyed bingo, puzzles and her grandchildren’s activities.

She is survived by a son, Ted Gerber (Sandy) of Beloit; a daughter, Dee Dee Cross (Craig Gillette) of Phillipsburg, Kansas; three brothers, Floyd Henderson and Dale Wayne Henderson both of Ellis and Terry Henderson of Wamego, Kansas; two sisters, Mickey Barber of Covington, Georgia and Tina Marie Kroeger of Alabama and four grandchildren, Dustin Cross (Randi Schamberger) of Ellis, Case y Cross (Amanda) of Hays, Jonathan Gerber of Salina and Abigail Ann Gerber of Beloit.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Gordon and Bob Henderson and a grandson, Joshua Cross.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Saturday, January 26, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial visitation will be Friday 6 PM – 8 PM with a combined rosary and parish vigil service at 7 PM all at the church.

Enola I. Overholser

Enola I. Overholser, 91, died Tue., Jan. 22, 2019 at Citizens Medical Center, Colby, Kansas. She was born July 14, 1927, in Colby and was a retired bookkeeper.

Enola was preceded in death by her husband James Carl in 1972 and her daughter Mary in 2017.

Survivors include sons Joe. W of Ada, Oklahoma; Lloyd C. of Elko, Nevada; and R. Earl in Eureka, Nevada, as well as 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are Sat., Jan. 26 at Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel, 745 S. Country Club Dr., Colby. There is no visitation as cremation has been chosen. Inurnment is in Beulah Cemetery.

Memorials made be made to the Thomas County Historical Society in care of the funeral chapel.

Edward Dolton Robey

Edward Dolton Robey died Tuesday, January 22, 2019. He was born November 19, 1928, in Graves, Kentucky, the son of George Edward and Anna Lucille (Williams) Robey. Dolton was the son of a Baptist pastor and moved to different locations during his childhood.

He graduated from Protection High School in Protection, Kansas, and moved with his family to Ulysses, Kansas, prior to entering the military. This is where he met Bennie Jean Mead and married her on December 18, 1949. They had three daughters, Cheryl Ann, Carol Beth, and Sheila Jean. Bennie Jean preceded him in death in 1998 and Carol Beth in 1966.

He enlisted in the Navy on March 21, 1949, and was a 2nd Class Aviation Mechanist Mate. He served in the Navy, during the Korean War until February 1953, at which time he returned to Ulysses to raise his family. He worked for Mobil Oil Corporation for around 35 years retiring in 1990.

On October 28, 1999, he married Ida Mae Webster Goeller, his high school sweetheart, and moved to Pratt, Kansas, where he remained until 2012, when he returned to Ulysses. She preceded him in death in 2011.

Dolton was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Ulysses, where he served many years as an ordained deacon and an adult Sunday School teacher. His faith never wavered through trials but became stronger and he served the Lord with gladness.

Dolton is survived by his children, Cheryl (Robey) Fowler and husband Gary, Sheila (Robey) Koop and husband Ivan all of Ulysses; two step-children, Gary Goeller and wife Deborah, and Barbara Rush all of Kanapolis; grandchildren, Gavin Fowler of Ulysses, Angela (Fowler) Merritt and husband Maurice of Owasso, Oklahoma, Erica (Koop) Boone and husband Joseph of Garden City, and Stephanie Koop of Mesa, Arizona; step-grandchildren, Casey Svoboda of Council Bluff, Iowa, Emily Svoboda of Pratt, and Christopher Svoboda of Kanopolis; along with nine great-grandchildren; sister, Phyllis Thomason; four nieces, one nephew; and Ulysses First Baptist Church family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothes, Jimmy, Elsie, and Carl; wife Bennie Jean; daughter, Carol Beth; and wife, Ida Mae

Funeral service will be Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church in Ulysses with Reverend Jay Mykytiuk and Reverend Richard Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Ulysses Cemetery with military rites by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79. Mary Eileen Townsend

Mary Eileen Townsend, 89, of Lyons, passed away January 21, 2019 at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons, Kansas.

She was born July 31, 1929 in Menlo, Kansas, the daughter of Ralph and Iva Barnhart Turner. She graduated from Menlo High School, Menlo, Kansas, with the class of 1947.

Mary has resided in Lyons since 2014, formerly of Hays, Kansas.

She was a bank teller at Citizen State Bank in Utica, Kansas from 1959 to 1979; and a grandparent at Hays USD 489 for several years. She was a member of VFW Women’s Auxiliary, Utica.

Mary is survived by her two daughters, Sandra K. Shirley and husband Jerry of Kanopolis, KS, and Shirley Sue Rimpley and husband Tony of Tulsa, OK; twelve grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dole Townsend; son, Stanley Townsend; brothers, Dale and Loren Turner; and sisters, Myrtle Quinn, Rosa Wigington, Ethel Teel, Opal Teel and Esther Turner.

Graveside service will be 2:00 P.M., Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Utica Cemetery, Utica, Kansas. Memorials may be given to Rice Community Healthcare Foundation-Swing Bed Unit in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.

Alfred J. Gerstner

Alfred J. Gerstner, 93, did Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, at Prairie Senior Living Complex, Colby.

He was born Oct. 30, 1925, in Trego County. He was a retired area manager for Great Plains Electric.

He was preceded by his wife, Kathryn “Kit”, on June 4, 2018.

Survivors include two sons, Christopher of Colby and Rex of Dallas, Texas; six daughters, Linda Stockman of Colby, Cindy Cutting of Chandler, Ariz., Diane Gerstner of Colby, Ann Siemsen of Colby, Laura Muller of Derby and Melissa Haberkorn of Beaufort, S.C.; three brothers; one sister; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel, Colby. Vigil and rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be at Kansas Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney, at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25.

Enola I. Overholser, 91, died Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at Citizens Medical Center in Colby.

Mary Lou Lambert Bell

On Wednesday, January 16, 2019, Mary Lou Lambert Bell, loving wife and mother of four children, passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 82.

Mary Lou was born on August 10, 1936 on a farm near the redline in Graham County, Kansas, to James and LuLu (Boatman) Lambert. She was the youngest of 6 kids. On June 12, 1954, she married Verlan Leslie Bell. They had three children, Leslie, Debbie, and Diana Kay before moving to Littleton, Colorado, in 1959. Jim, their younger son, joined the family in 1970.

Mary Lou attended grade school through high school in Hill City, Kansas, graduating in 1954. She always looked forward to attending her high school reunion over Memorial Day weekend and having lunch with her classmates. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens in Colorado along with making silk flower arrangements and fans for family and friends. She was an avid book reader and enjoyed puzzles and word searches. She reminisced fondly of the many trips taken with Verlan and various other family members in their motor home, to Kansas and Texas to visit family and friends. Many memories and laughs were made on their trips including one from Colorado to Florida with many stops throughout the trip.

She was a hard-working and dedicated employee to all the various jobs she had throughout her life, but cherished most her time spent raising her children and keeping the books for the family business.
Numerous people commented on Mary Lou’s smile and compassion, remembering that no matter what she was going through she greeted them with a smile, said she was doing great and always asked how they were doing.

Mary Lou, in addition to her parents, is preceded in death by siblings, Enid and Alex McKenna, Viola and Bill Jones, James Ivan Lambert, Wilma and David Brinkmeyer, and Geneva and Willard Bell; daughter in law, Kay Bell.

She is survived by husband, Verlan Bell; children, Leslie Bell, Debra and husband Kjell Snemyr, Diana Kay and Don Missel and James Bell; grandchildren, Bobby Anderson, LeAnne (Arlo) Padilla,, Kristine (Janak) Garg, Erik Snemyr, and Stephanie Missel; great grandkids, Mirabai Garg, Kiran Garg, and Hayden Snemyr; also survived by many other nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Visitation will be 10 to 2 Saturday January 19, 2019 at Drinkwine Family Mortuary, Littleton, Colorado.
