James Wayne (Jim) Showers of Edmond, Kansas, 73, surrounded by his loving family was delivered to the Lord Friday, January 10, 2019.

He was born in Hays, Kansas, March 24, 1945 to Kenneth and Norma (Overturf) Showers. He married Sherry Hazlett December 30, 1966. To this union three children were born: Michelle, Devra and James.

Jim was raised in Graham County and graduated from Hill City High School Class of ‘63. Following high school he attended Dodge City Community College and Fort Hays State University.

After college Jim returned to Graham County. He spent nearly a lifetime rearranging terrain in Graham, Rooks and Norton counties, building erosion-control terraces. This career began when he was 11 years old, and purchased his first piece of equipment two years later when he was only 13. Through the years he built over 5,000 miles of terraces and planted over 60,000 acres of CRP grass.

After his father-in-law passed away, Jim took over farming the 800 acres in Norton County. He loved to get in the tractor, working the ground, smelling the fresh-worked soil, and running his fingers through a load of wheat at harvest.

Nothing was more important to Jim than his family. Countless memories were made having big family Christmases, taking family trips and following his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. Education was also important to Jim, making sure all three of his children graduated from college, and was proud of all his nieces and nephews that continued their education. Together Jim and Sherry tried to be at all the graduations from high school and college for their family.

Jim was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Showers; step-father Lawrence Adams; in-laws Hubert and Margaret Hazlett; sister-in-law Joan Hazlett; one brother Eddy Showers; and a niece, Angie Dale.

He is survived by his wife Sherry Showers of the home; children: Michelle (Robert) Wiltfong, Edmond, Kansas, Devra (Lance) Dobbins, Bryan, Texas, and James Showers, wife Jennifer, Tyler, Texas. Four grandsons: Hunter, Hayden, Judson and Brody; his mother Norma Adams, Bogue, Kansas; brothers: John (Debbie) Showers, Spring Hill, Kenny (Rosanne) Showers, Athens Texas, Steve (Carla) Showers, Hugoton, Kansas, Doug (Lorna) Showers, Spring Hill, sister Cathy Logan, Spring Hill; sister-in-law, Jennifer Showers, widow of Eddy, Spring Hill, Kansas; nieces and nephews: Brenda, Dawn, Shane, Mickey, Cindy, Nikki, Nathan, Jessica, Justin, Jordan, Lindsay, Stephanie, Brandon, and their children.

She was born on February 21, 1934 in Hays to Arthur and Emma (McCrary) Fury. She graduated from Palco High School and married Robert Rostocil in 1952. To this union, two daughters were born. Marilyn married Virgil Wasinger on February 14, 1987 (Valentine’s Day) and together they shared 31 years of marriage.

Marilyn was active with the Humane Society and the Hays Senior Center. She loved crafting. That included, crocheting, knitting, sewing and using her hands to make beautiful craft pieces. Marilyn was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Hays.

Survivors include her husband, Virgil Wasinger of Willow House, Hays; two daughters, Cyd McElhaney and her husband Robert Blais of Anadarko, OK, Lynne Van Dyke of Zurich; three grandchildren, Evan & Benton McElhaney and Anna Bentley; six great-grandchildren, Devin, Kade, Jason, Marshall, Ryan and Mason.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will be held from 1-2:00 P.M., followed by a memorial service at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 2509 Vine St., Hays, KS 67601. Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at WaKeeney.

Shirley M. Sarver, age 83, of Plainville, Kansas, died Monday, January 14, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays. She was born on August 28, 1935, to Paul and Stella (Purder) Doty. She married Elmer Lee Sarver in 1952, at Natoma, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 1, 2013.

She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Plainville, Kansas. She moved to the Good Samaritan Society of Hays in 2017. Shirley was raised on a farm in Rooks County and graduated from Natoma High School.

Survivors include one son, Mikel E. Sarver, Hays, KS; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one daughter, Teresa Sarver; one brother, Leroy Doty and one sister, Pauline Finch.

A private family inurnment will be at the Plainville City Cemetery, Plainville, Kansas.

The family suggests memorial to the Good Samaritan Society of Hays in care of the mortuary.

Rose M. Heinen, age 86, left this earthly life on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Cloud County Health Center, Concordia, KS. She was born on Oct. 29, 1932 in Hays, KS to Leonard A. & Kathryn M. (Karls) Spresser.

Rose graduated from St. John’s Catholic High School in Beloit, KS and attended school at Cloud County Community College. Rose married John Heinen and they later divorced, but to this union were born 3 daughters. Rose was primarily a homemaker during her life, raising three daughters in the Concordia, KS area. After raising her daughters, she worked at various occupations in retail and as a receptionist.

Rose moved to Scottsdale, AZ in 1977 where she resided for 30 years and was a member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church volunteering her time as a lector, Eucharistic minister and bereavement minister. She moved to Salina, KS in 2007 and then to Concordia in 2013. She was involved with the Brown Grand Players and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Becky Jones, Salina & Shelly Farha (Dan), Concordia; grandchildren, Jericca Richardson (Bobby), John Huseman (Lindsay), Matt Huseman (Jordan), Katie Petric (Tom), Spencer Farha (Amber), Garrett Farha (Amber) & Kelsey Abitz (Jason) & 20 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Roberta Huseman; brothers, Gerald & Mike Spresser & a sister, Mary Jane Colby.

Genabeba (Geneva) Pauda, age 84, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Sunday, January 13, 2019, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born January 3, 1935, in Waco, Texas, the daughter of Avelino and Maria (Salas) Felan.

Geneva grew up in Texas and moved to Ulysses in 1972. On October 28, 1949, she married Marcelino B. Pauda, Sr. in Clovis, New Mexico. Geneva enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, and gardening. She most enjoyed her time spent with family. Geneva was a member of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Geneva is survived by her sons, Jesse Joe Pauda of Lubbock, Texas, Louie Pauda and wife Olga of Ulysses, Joe Luis Pauda of Ulysses, Angel Pauda and wife Ronda of Ulysses, Albert Pauda of Jetmore, Bill Pauda and wife LaRisa of Liberal, and Sammy Pauda and wife Michelle of Ulysses; daughters, Geneva Ramos, Irene Sosa, and Irma Pando all of Ulysses; 54 grandchildren, 124 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren.

Geneva is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marcelino Sr.; sons, Robert and Mark; daughter, Dominga Esquivel; grandchildren, Katie Pauda, Toni Pauda, and great-grandchildren, Ezre Chavez, Lacy Chavez, Sadie Chavez, and Seriah Rae Garcia.

Larned – Shirley Jean Miller, 89, passed away January 11, 2019 in Minden, Nebraska.

She was born November 11, 1929 in Wichita, KS, the daughter of Ivan Rhea and Mary V. Walker Detrich. A longtime area resident, she was co-owner of Miller Tire in Norton, KS and was the City Clerk in Radium, KS.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Larned and the Radium Senior Center.

On April 26, 1949, she married Ralph W. Miller in McPherson. He passed away December 19,1996.

Survivors include: two daughters, Monica Miller, Minden, NE, and Marla Farber, Great Bend, KS, a son, Monte Miller (Tasha), Richland Hills, Texas; half brother, Norman Detrich, Mio, MI; two sisters, Mable Hammond, Wichita, KS and Helen Deliere, Simi Valley, CA and six grandchildren, Jason Miller (Dee), Lyons, KS, Amie Miller-Rush (Rusty), Ellinwood, KS, Sara Miller (Matt Hodges), Ellinwood, KS, Charles Miller, Paris, Kentucky, Logan Farber (Patrice), St. Peters, MO and Meagan Barnett, (Jacob), Great Bend, KS, and twelve great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Mona Miller, two brothers, Robert Detrich and William Detrich and two sisters, Bonnie Kipple and Bette Herman.

Frieda V. Scheuerman, 96, La Crosse, Kansas, died Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Mrs. Scheuerman was born February 2, 1922, in rural Northwest Barton County, Kansas, the daughter of Philip and Pauline (Wagner) Funk. She was a lifelong resident of Barton County, Kansas, and Rush County, Kansas. She was a homemaker and a dietary aide at Rush County Memorial Hospital before her retirement in 1991.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and WELCA, both of Otis, Kansas.

On September 16, 1945, she married Orland L. Scheuerman at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas. He preceded her in death September 26, 1979.

Survivors include: three sons, Perry Scheuerman (Cindi), Elk City, Oklahoma, Randall Scheuerman (Viki), Pelopia, Greece, and Craig Scheuerman (Carol), Bison, Kansas; one daughter, Lana Scheuerman, Wichita, Kansas; and three grandchildren, Lisl Scheuerman, Norman, Oklahoma, Phillip Scheuerman, Derby, Kansas, and Tristan Scheuerman, Elk City, Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Pamela Scheuerman; four brothers, Emmanuel Funk, Rubin Funk, Herbert Funk, and Sigmund Funk; an infant brother; and three sisters, Amelia Funk, Hilda Maier, and Wilma Funk.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 15, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Shawnee, Kansas – Wynn Scott Laird, 71, died on January 9, 2019. He was born on May 29, 1947, in Ransom, Kansas, the son of Winfield Scott Laird and Verlie Florence Munstedt. He married Sherry Lee Anderson on September 3, 1966, in Dighton, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry, and his parents, Winfield and Verlie Laird.

Wynn spent his childhood in Dighton, Kansas and graduated from Dighton High School in 1965. As a young man, Scott was a typical small-town boy… playing any sport under the sun, helping with farm work and tinkering with anything that had a motor or electrical circuitry. He attended Wichita State University, graduating in 1970 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Right out of college he accepted a position with American Risk Management in Niles, Ohio, which turned out to be a lifetime job!

Scott and Sherry moved to Niles, Ohio, in 1971, where their only son, Wade Scott Laird, was born on June 23, 1973. They spent the next eight years in Northeast Ohio where he continued with his passion of sports and tinkering. Niles, Ohio is where Scott fell in love with the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns….he loved those teams the rest of his life. Whether it was coaching his son’s baseball team or building elaborate train sets in the basement of their Niles home, he was always involved, teaching and loving on those closest to him. Many Saturday afternoons were spent at the mall with Wade, giving him quarters to play the new thing…..video games!

Scott accepted a new position with American Risk Management that moved the family to Prairie Village, Kansas in 1982. The early years in Kansas City were spent doing much of the same…coaching baseball, leading in Boy Scouts and working tirelessly at his job…so much so that he was a one-man office. Scott joined the OP Lions Club and developed a passion for the civic services their Club provides. He developed lifetime friendships through that organization. Trips to Western Kansas were made as often as possible to see family and friends, for dove/pheasant hunting and for every Christmas break.

He was blessed with his first grandchild, Nadia Elise Laird, on September 10, 2000, and his second grandchild, Walker Sever-Laird, on March 1, 2004. After Scott retired in 2016, his love for the grandchildren and all his hobbies came to full bloom. His happiest times were spent with Nadia and Walker doing anything and everything together. He was a devoted family man from start to finish always thinking of others before himself.

A Funeral Service will be held at the First Christian Church in Dighton, Kansas on Monday, January 21, 2019, at 10:00am, with Rev. Aeril Smith officiating. Cheryl Kay Synoground, 72, passed away at her home Friday, January 11, 2019.

Cheryl was born December 20, 1946 in Smith Center, KS, the daughter of Ivan “Swede” and Elsie (Wehe) Fiene. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran, rural Athol, KS, on March 30, 1947 and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith on June 6, 1960 at First Saint John Lutheran where she was a member the majority of her life.

She attended the Myers one-room school house in rural Athol through 8th grade. She graduated from Kensington High School in 1964, and continued her education at Brown Mackie in Salina, KS. After graduation she worked for Graves Trucking in Salina. August 1st, 1970 she was married to Richard Ray Synoground. The married couple moved to Kansas City where she continued to work until she had children when she became a full time homemaker. The union was blessed with four children, Scott, Christy, Holly, and Adam.

After retirement Cheryl and Richard relocated back to the Fiene family homestead in 1995. Cheryl was a dedicated servant to her home congregation at First St. John Lutheran and was very active in the LWML. She also enjoyed tending to her flowers, baking cinnamon rolls, and making various crafts. She was blessed with two grandchildren who relocated to Kensington in 2016. She would’ve told anyone that her time with Ada and Ivan were what she had been waiting her whole life for. They will greatly miss having her as a part of their lives.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Richard, of the home. Son Scott, Kansas City, KS, daughter Christy, Kansas City, MO, son Adam and Connie (Brandt) and their two children Ada Kay and Ivan Brandt, Kensington, KS. Two sisters, Sharon Reed, Jenks, OK and Ajean Montgomery, St. Louis, MO and too many cousins, extended family, and friends to mention. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ivan “Swede” and Elsie Fiene, mother-in-law Violet Synoground and an infant daughter Holly.

A celebration of Cheryl’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 18, 2019 at First Saint John Lutheran Church, Kensington, KS with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. There will not be a public visitation as cremation was chosen, but the family will receive visitors on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, Smith Center, KS from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the LWML of First St. John Lutheran and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel. Final inurnment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery at a later date.
