Pearl Mae Ganstrom

Pearl Mae Ganstrom, age 90, left this life for her eternal home on January 2, 2019, at Cloud County Health Center, Concordia. She was born May 14, 1928, in Concordia, Kansas to Carl and Edith (Olson) Johnson. She and her twin brother, Earl Rae, were the youngest of five children.

Pearl attended Concordia schools and graduated from Concordia High School in 1946. She married Gene Ganstrom on August 23, 1951, at The Baptist Church in Concordia, Kansas and they have lived in the community their entire lives. After her children were in high school, Pearl worked for Dr. Stan Christensen as a dental assistant for 22 years.

Pearl was active in The Baptist Church from the time of her birth. In her adult life she was a deaconess, taught children’s Sunday school classes, was very involved in ABW, and prepared the communion bread for many years. She was especially known in the church and community for her delicious pies.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Gene, her son, Sheldon (Linda) Ganstrom of Hays, daughter, Kathryn (Doug) Herman of Concordia and her brother Earl Johnson of Junction City. Pearl is also survived by five grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. They are Landen (Danielle) Ganstrom of Charleston, SC and daughters Lilli and Luna; Tiara (Ryan) Gottschalk of Hays and children Lexi, Katelyn and Nolan; Jenny (Shawn) Sullivan of Topeka, KS and children Drew, Grace, Brooke and Claire; Alissa (Ben) Smith of Olathe, KS and children Gavin, Ella and Liam; and Russell (Ashley) Herman of Haysville, KS and children Brianna, Kyren, Taegan, Raegan, Rylee, Treysen, Tyus and Tobin.

Pearl was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mabel (Stanley) Ostrom, her brother Paul (Faith) Johnson, her brother Carl Jr. (Therese) Johnson, and her sister-in-law Goldie Johnson.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday, January 4th at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, with the family greeting friends from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM. A celebration of life service will be held at The Baptist Church in Concordia at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 with Pastor Jonathan Peppers officiating. A private, family burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery will precede the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to The Baptist Church of Concordia and left in care of the funeral home. April 21, 1979 – December 30, 2018

A celebration of life for Jarrod S. Taylor, born April 21, 1979, in Wellington, will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at City Limits Restaurant in Colby.

Robert J. Pfeifer

Robert J. Pfeifer, 91, Hays, died Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019 at HaysMed.

Robert (RJ) was born April 12, 1927 in Hays, Kansas the son of Pete and Catherine (Unrein) Pfeifer. RJ grew up on the family farm just north of Hays and attended Hays High School.

RJ spent his youth working the family farm before being drafted for service in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry before returning to Hays to continue his passion for farming.

He was united in marriage to Ann E. Waldschmidt on November 17th, 1947 in Ellis, Ks. After 53 loving years of marriage, Ann preceded him in death on April 9th, 2000. During their marriage, they enjoyed participating in German weddings, Polka dancing, and traveling for relaxation.

In addition to being a Kansas wheat farmer, RJ had an appreciation for breaking horses and raising cattle. He maintained his dairy herd for over 25 years and was an active member of the Milk Producers Association. In addition to milking, he raised black angus beef cattle. RJ participated in rodeos and enjoyed spending time with his family at team penning events. He was a member of the American Legion and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include his four children; his daughter Carol and Rex Cline (children Jason and Tisha) of Olathe, Ks; daughter Jeanne and Fred Weilert (children Jeff, Jesse, and Anne) of Hays; son Roger and Cindy Pfeifer (children Scotty and Montana) of Augusta, Ks; son Jay and Bobbi Pfeifer (children Weston and Janessa) of Hays, two sisters, Florence Kuhn of Hays and Venita Collier of Lakewood, Colorado, and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Agnes Kreutzer, Regina Arnhold, Martina Kreutzer, and Alfreda Schmeidler and two brothers, Wilfred James Pfeifer and Peter V. Pfeifer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Monday, January 7th, 2019 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, Hays, with Fr. Earl Befort officiating.  Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Honor Guard and Hays American Legion Riders will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.

Loyd Richard Fogg

Loyd Richard Fogg, age 66, of Goodland passed away, January 1, 2019 at Swedish Medical Center in Denver, Colorado.

Loyd was born March 17, 1952 to Hobart and Lucie (Burd) Fogg in Burlington, Colorado. He grew up and went to school in Burlington. He married Tamara Miller on September 14, 1984 in Goodland.

Loyd worked as a truck driver for 40 plus years, he owned his own trucking company for many of those years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, Harley Davidson Motorcycles, watching stock car races and spending time with his family and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents; and sisters, Vicky and Linda.

He is survived by his wife Tammy; daughters, Angie (Eddie) Holloway of Briggsdale, CO; Christina (Justin) Burgess of Scotts Bluff, NE; Kimberly (R.C.) Clark of Ellinwood, KS; Courtney (Dusty) Knox of Goodland, KS; grandchildren, Makala and Makenna Fogg, Montana Noffsinger, Kenadie and Ashlynn Burgess, D.J. and Deegan Knox, William and Janika Clark, Mackenzie and Mason Holloway and one great-granddaughter Kaydence Endicott.

Funeral service will be Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. MT at Bateman Funeral Home, 211 East 11th Street, Goodland. Interment will follow the service at the Goodland Cemetery, North Main Street.

Alison Ann (Clutter) Caro

Larned – Alison Ann (Clutter) Caro, 69, passed away December 31, 2018 in Larned, KS after a three year battle with Glioblastoma brain cancer.

Born January 9, 1949 in Larned, Alison was the fourth child born to Charles Edgar and Norma Frances Hofsess Clutter. She was a healthy, strong willed, independent wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. A lifetime area resident, Alison had the privilege of being able to pursue her passion early on, studying music and ballet in Michigan and then furthering her education too South Florida. After a short time of teaching dance in Colorado; she came home to earn her Master’s degree in Special Education from Fort Hays State University. Alison taught special education at the Larned State Hospital and later worked for the United States Postal Service.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the church choir, Larned. Some of her most precious hobbies in life were enjoying her grandchildren, cooking, reading, gardening and being a foster care provider.

On August 1, 1981, she married Cecil Bradley with whom she had two precious boys, Miles and Malcolm. She later married Lloyd Vernon Caro, August 3, 1998 in Wichita; with whom she built a wonderful life of housekeeping, gardening and foster parenting.

Her beloved survivors include: husband, Lloyd Caro, Larned; two sons, Malcolm Joseph Bradley, Ruidoso, New Mexico, Miles Dustin and Lindsey Bradley, Topeka; step-son, Chris Caro, Hudson; two step-daughters, Leah and Matt Alexander, Garfield, Suzan Lohr, Larned; brother, David Clutter, Parachute, Colorado; sister, Cydney and Frank Pearce, Richland Springs, Texas; six grandchildren, Logan Bradley, Dakota Bradley, Aliah Alexander, Avah Alexander, Asher Alexander, Abe Alexander and foster daughter, Kassandra Razo, Larned.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Curtis Clutter.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, Larned, with Pastor Bill Stapleton presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.

Derek M. Pfannenstiel

Derek M. Pfannenstiel, beloved son of Alden and Judy (Janssen) Pfannenstiel was born on August 2, 1982, in Norton, Kansas, and passed away at his home in Norton on January 1, 2019, at the age of 36.

Derek grew up in Norton and graduated from the Norton Community High School. He worked at New Age Industrial Inc. in Norton as a welder.

Derek was confirmed into the Catholic faith. Some of his greatest joys were hunting, fishing, cruising around backroads, and spending time with his friends and family, he especially loved his dog, Ryder. He took great pride in his job, and thoroughly enjoyed being able to make friends that became family to him.

Survivors include: his parents, Alden and Judy Pfannenstiel, Norton; one brother, Blake, and wife, Rachael Pfannenstiel, Norton; one sister, Nicole, and husband, Joe Henry, Norton; five nieces, Jessa, Annie, and Avery Pfannenstiel, Phoenix and Jazlynn Henry; one nephew, Kaine Henry; one daughter, Kyndal Peck; several other relatives and friends.

Derek was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Felix and Betty Pfannenstiel; maternal grandfather, Gilbert Janssen; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Lois Yvonne Hubert

Lois Yvonne Hubert passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019, at the age of 92.

Lois was born March 5, 1926, in Upland, Nebraska, to Gust A. and Frances (Danielsen) Jameson. Lois attended Upland Schools until she transferred to Minden High School her senior year and graduated in 1944. After graduating she worked at Wright Patterson Army Base in Dayton, Ohio. On April 6, 1947 she married Delton W. Hubert. They lived in Kearney, NE while Delton finished his schooling.

They moved to Kansas in 1950 and farmed and ranched in the Oakley, Monument, Winona area. Lois was a member of the Monument Mothers Club, Immanuel Lutheran Church and the American International Charolais Association.

She was a homemaker and along with her husband raised their seven children, Susan (Rich) Pfannenstiel, Ozawkie, KS; Greg (Brenda) Hubert, Oakley, KS; Lynne Wheeler, Fort Scott, KS; Dianne (Steve) Swanson, Bay, MO; David (Shelby) Hubert, Oakley, KS; Randall (Toni) Hubert, Garden Plain, KS and Tim (Michelle) Hubert, Oakley, KS. She was also blessed with 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; Craig (Cheri) Renner, children John (Briana) and son Paxton Renner, Cole Renner and Peyton Renner; Tracey (Marc) Welsh, children Parker, Carter and Reagan; Mark (Andrea) Hubert, children Maddox and Mackenzie; Loralea Hubert, children Jovea and Cooper; Scott (Sara) Sutton, children McKinley, Marley and Tucker; Kyle Swanson; Kristin (Corey) Van Natta, children Mila and Maxwell; Whitney (Jeff) Dennis, children Vada and Sutton; Lindsey (John) Behrendt; Hannah Hubert; Austin (Nicole) Hubert; Camille Hubert; Blake Hubert; Cayle Hubert and Braydon Hubert.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Delton; her parents; two sisters, Hazel Schroeder and Ruby Cole and her son-in-law Rex Wheeler.

Sharon A. Barraza

Sharon A. Barraza, age 57, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas.

She was born on January 8, 1961 in Gallup, New Mexico, the daughter of Raymond and Grace Etcitty Warner. A resident of Scott City, Kansas, since 1999 moving from Mariano Lake, New Mexico, she was a retired dietitian aide and worked for Park Lane Nursing Home.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Scott City. She was a US Army Veteran from 1980 until 1983 with the rank of SP4.

Leola June (Kear) (Epard) Sohl

Leola June (Kear) (Epard) Sohl, 83, of Salina, passed away Dec. 30, 2018. She was born May 29, 1935, to Murray and Clara (Seigal) Kear in her great grandparents’ sod house, the Porter Collins Home, south of Brewster. June attended grade school in Brownville and graduated from Brewster High School in 1953. She married George Epard, May 27, 1953, and to their union was born two sons, Marc and Jay Epard. The family traveled south to north custom harvesting until they took over George’s family farm southeast of Colby.

June married Stan Sohl, Feb. 28,1983, and moved to Salina. They ran June and Stan’s Heirlooms Antique Store at Fifth and Walnut in Salina, and regularly traveled across several states doing antique shows. June was past president of the National Milk Glass Collectors Society. Throughout her life, June enjoyed gardening. She was known for her pickles and took great pleasure in baking and cooking, especially during the Christmas season. She was an avid duplicate bridge player until her death.

Survivors include: sons, Marc Epard (Kathy Porsch) and Jay Epard; brother, Larry Kear (Betty); stepsons, Duane and Mark Sohl; stepdaughters, Jeanine Eldar (Ilan) and Martha Bertolino (Tom); stepdaughter-in-law, Terri Sohl; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

June was preceded in death by: her parents; husbands, George Epard, and Stan Sohl; and stepson, Glen Sohl.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 901 Neal, Salina, with the Rev. Lori Persigehl officiating. A reception will follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in June’s name to Hospice of Salina, or Salina Regional Health Center, in care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Ruth Kelley Hayden

Ruth Kelley Hayden, 97, of Atwood, died Saturday, December 29, 2018, at the Rawlins County Health Center. Ruth was born in Atwood, June 22, 1921, to Irene (Henderson) and Alonzo W. Kelley. She attended Atwood Grade School and graduated from Atwood High School in 1939. She earned an associate of arts degree from Cottey College in 1941 and a bachelor’s degree from Kansas University in 1943. On March 28, 1943, she married Irven W. Hayden Jr. at the Atwood Methodist Church. Ruth and Irv were blessed with seven children and 72 years of marriage, most of them spent in Atwood.

Ruth was a homemaker interested in writing, history and travel. While raising her family, she was a columnist for the Atwood Citizen-Patriot, producing “That’s Livin’” from 1956-1963 and the feature series “Interesting People” from 1959-1961. She published two volumes of Rawlins County History, The Time that Was. Ruth and Irv were founding members of the Rawlins County Historical Society and members of the Kansas State Historical Society. Ruth was an agent for Atchison Travel and Arrow Travel in the 1970s and ‘80s.

Ruth was a member of the Atwood United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Chapter AX of P.E.O. International, the Town and Country Guild, Union HDU and the KU Alumni Association. She served on the board of directors of the Second Century Fund and on the scholarship committee of the Hanson Foundation. She was a Girl Scout, Boy Scout and 4-H leader.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary (Pat) Maley and Lonnie (Bob) Frick; son Thorne Hayden; daughter Sally Hayden; son-in-law Mike Dennison and granddaughter Belle Hayden.

She is survived by five children, Mike (Patti) Hayden, of Lawrence, Kelley (Marta Heffner), of Reno, NV, Tom (Carol) Hayden, of Halfway, OR, Katy (Bob Tricks) Hayden, of Ellis and Paul (Tara) Hayden, of Atwood; five grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2019, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Atwood United Methodist Church.
