Shelby Lynn (Hunt) Miller

Shelby Lynn (Hunt) Miller, age 79, died November 23, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society-Sherman County in Goodland, Kansas. Shelby was born on May 13, 1939, by a midwife on a farm in Bird City, Kansas, to Clarence Eugene Hunt and Margretta Ruth Blair Hunt.

Shelby grew up in the Kansas counties of Cheyenne and Sherman. She attended country grade school and graduated from Sherman County School in the Class of 1957. She also attended school at Kansas State University. After school, Shelby worked at Model Laundry in Goodland as a seamstress. She also taught 4-H sewing classes and was a 4-H leader. In 1980, Shelby was elected Sherman County Treasurer and retired in 2005 after 25 years in office. After retirement, Shelby loved volunteering at the Goodland Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, where she eventually became President and then ultimately was appointed District V Coordinator to serve on the auxiliary’s board of directors.

On June 22, 1962, Shelby married Bennett “Dee” Miller at Pilgrim Holiness Church in Goodland. They celebrated 55 wonderful years together, before Dee’s death on July 21, 2017.

Shelby lived life to the fullest and enjoyed bowling, cooking and sewing. Her favorite was sewing. She sewed many beautiful things from clothes to quilts to drapes. Shelby also loved traveling. A couple of favorites were a trip to the Cayman Islands with her Class of 1957, and an Alaskan cruise with friends, Keith and Janet Moffett, and her sister-in-law, Carolyn Hunt. She really enjoyed attending K-State football games in Manhattan and spending time with friends and family, and especially her best friend of 58 years, Barb Neitzel.

Shelby is survived by sister-in-laws, Carolyn Hunt, Glendale, Arizona and Judy (Bob) Hill, Cleo Springs, Oklahoma; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and a host of special friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dee Miller (2017); son, Chad Miller (1984); brother, Ronnie Hunt (1997); and her parents, Clarence Hunt (1995) and Margretta Hunt (1985).

Funeral services for Shelby will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 10:30 AM MT at the Church of Christ Church in Goodland with Pastor Brent Flanders officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM MT at the Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland.

Charlotte Veatch

Charlotte Veatch, age 72, of Munjor, KS, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Hays Medical Center. She was born on August 2, 1946 in Hays, the daughter of Alois “Shorty” and Mary Helen (Jacobs) Schumacher.

Charlotte was a 1964 graduate from Victoria High School. She married Philip Veatch on February 14, 1976 in Hays. He preceded her in death. She was a longtime member of Christian Mothers and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church all of Munjor. She was devoted to her family and cherished her grandchildren. Charlotte’s loves included her cats, the KC Royals and the Denver Broncos.

Survivors include her two grandchildren, Philip Veatch III and Eileen Veatch of Munjor; two brothers, Marion Schumacher and his wife Valerie of Munjor, Ron Schumacher and his wife Pat of Arvada, CO; one sister, Mary Lou Pfannenstiel of Hays; daughter-in-law, Amy Arnhold; life-long foreign exchange student and friend, Edgar Ramirez, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Philip Veatch; son, Philip Veatch II; two brothers, DeWayne and Geral Schumacher.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, November 26, 2018, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 883 Moscow St., Munjor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, Munjor.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., on Sunday, November 25, 2018 and 9-9:30 a.m., on Monday, all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 2509 Vine St., Hays, KS 67601.

A combined rosary and parish vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m., on Sunday at the funeral chapel.

Memorials can be made in Charlotte’s loving memory to the Hays Humane Society of the High Plains and/or to Masses in care of the funeral chapel.

Ona Merle ‘Pat’ Stecklein

Ona Merle “Pat” Stecklein, age 86, passed away on November 20, 2018 at the Trinity Manor in Dodge City, Kansas. She was born on May 8, 1932 in Ness County on the family farm 12 miles Northwest of Ness City, Kansas the daughter of Ronald and Phoebe (Lamoreaux) Snyder.

Pat was the youngest of 5 children and attended North Star Country School and then graduated from Ness City High School in 1950. She began working for Rexall Drug store while in high school. She worked in the drug store for the Rakers, Gomer Stukesbary and Greg ad Lisa Flax. She married Wilber Eugene Stecklein, who was in the United State Navy on Wednesday, April 21st, 1954, in Ness City. He preceded her in death on January 6, 2014.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Wasinger and her friend Darron Harms of Hanston; sons, Terrance Lee Stecklein of Ford and Darin James Stecklein of Ness City; sisters, Grace Hessman; and Lois Towns. 15 grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Jerald and Brent Stecklein; daughter, Rhonda Gantz; brother, Robert Snyder; and sister, Naida Moeder.

Memorial service will be on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, 2:00 p.m., at the Sacred Heart Church, Ness City, Kansas. Burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Rosary and Parish vigil will be at the funeral home beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Sacred Heart Cemetery Fund.

George C. Black

SMITH CENTER – George C. Black, age 91, passed away on Friday November 23, 2018 at the Deseret Health and Rehab Center in Smith Center, KS. He was born the son of Frank & Lena (Edell) Black in Lebanon, KS.

Survivors are his daughter, Sharon of Smith Center, a niece and three nephews.

Arrangements are pending at Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary.

Mona Rhea Jeffries

Mona Rhea Jeffries, age 84, died on November 23, 2018 at the Homestead Assisted Living in Garden City, Kansas. She was born on July 7, 1934 in Scott City, Kansas the daughter of Wade Hampton and Letha Adalene Phillips Burgess.

On August 12, 1954, she married Maurice Dean Jeffries in Garden City, Kansas. He survives.

Cremation has been selected and there will be no calling times.

Memorial services will be held at the Price and Sons Funeral home of Scott City at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018.

Mary F. Becker

Mary F. Becker, 79, departed this life on November 19, 2018 at the family farm in Logan, Kansas.

She was born March 14, 1939 to the late Christy & Inez (Paramore) Lynch. Mary attended the Logan schools and graduated from Logan High School in 1957. She then acquired her Cosmetology license in Dodge City, Kansas.

On September 6, 1958 she married the love of her life, Robert V. Becker, at St. John’s Parish in Logan, Kansas. Shortly after their wedding, Mary followed Bob to Crailsheim, Germany, where he was stationed with the U. S. Army. Their first child, Gary, was born in Stuttgart, Germany in June of 1960.

The family returned to Logan after Bob’s discharge from the Army in November, 1960. Bob went to work for Coop and Mary started her career as a cosmetologist with Irene’s Beauty Shop. Their daughter, Laquita, was born in August, 1961 and then Rebecca in May, 1963.

After 17 years as a cosmetologist, Mary changed careers and started working as a cook at Logan Manor. She served in that capacity for 23 years before retiring.

Mary was an excellent homemaker who loved gardening, cooking and sewing, but her greatest treasures were her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Christy & Inez Lynch; her sisters, Ruth Becker-Goscha and Frances Goetz; her brother, Ralph Lynch, and infant brother, Norman Lynch.

Survivors include her husband, Bob, of Logan; son, Gary & wife Sandy, of Logan, and their three boys: Shaun of Logan, Garrett of Scott City, KS and Chad of Hays, KS; daughter, Laquita Becker of Hays, KS and her son, Austin, of Ellsworth, KS; daughter, Rebecca Torres & husband, Scott, and their three children: Randy, Nicholas and Briana, all of Minneapolis, KS; as well as seven great-grandchildren.

Mary will be deeply missed by all of her family and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Nov. 23 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. John’s Catholic Church in Logan with Father George Chalbhagam officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan.

A Rosary service will be held Thurs. Nov. 22 at 8:00 p.m. in the Logan Funeral Home, Logan.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 9:00 Wed. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Services or the Logan Manor.

Gerald Joseph Smith

Gerald Joseph Smith, age 88, died at Wichita County Health Center on November 21, 2018 in Leoti, Kansas. He was born on June 24, 1930 in Okarche, Oklahoma to Anton Smith and Marie (Wittrock) Smith.

He moved to Kansas in 1951 and married Imelda J. Baker at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marienthal on June 24, 1953. He was a lifelong farmer and among the first to grow corn in Wichita County. Gerald served on the St. Mary’s Church parish council for 10 years and was a lifetime member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He served on the board of directors of the Scott Coop for 10 years. He was a US Army veteran, serving from 1954 to 1956 and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. His discharge rank was SP3 (T).

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Imelda; three sons, Earl (Deb) Smith of Marienthal, Don (Liz) Smith of Scott City and Ernie (Christi) Smith of Scott City; and three daughters Sharry (Clem) Nelson of Johnson, Kathy (Dale) Owings of Lawrence and Ruth (Bill) Hovey of Olathe; a sister, Alice Stroud of Okarche, Oklahoma; 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Dorothy Ketterer of Lake St. Louis, Missouri; a brother, Sylvester Smith of Oklahoma City and an infant son, Joseph.

Visitation will be at Price and Son’s Funeral Home in Leoti, KS on Saturday, November 24 from 1-4 pm and Sunday, November 25 from 2-4 with the family present. A Vigil service will be held at 5 pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marienthal. Funeral services will be at 10 am, Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marienthal. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 210 N. 2nd, Marienthal, KS 67863.

Charlotte Veatch

Charlotte Veatch, age 72, of Munjor, Kansas passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Hays Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 10 AM on Monday, November 26, 2018 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday 5 PM – 8 PM with a combined rosary and vigil service at 7 PM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Glen H. Kersenbrock

Glen H. Kersenbrock was born in Colby, KS on July 9, 1927 to A. C. and Edith Kersenbrock and passed away on November 21, 2018 in Colby, KS. He graduated from Colby High School in 1945. The day after graduation, he left for the Navy where he served at the end of World War II on the U.S.S. Alabama in the Pacific. After his discharge, Glen attended Kansas State University on the G. I bill.

In 1950, Glen returned home to Colby, worked for KSU with dairy cattle and started a bulk petroleoum business. He then began the Chief LP Gas and Colby Ferilizer businesses. In 1972, he took over the family farm naming it GHK Farms. Glen was affectionately called “Captain” by his employees.

Glen loved to bowl and was an avid golfer. For many years, he officiated high school footbal games in Western Kansas. Glen was a Thomas County Commissioner for 12 years, and named Business Man of the Year by the Colby Chamber of Commerce in 2010. He was a member of the Colby Rotary Club, American Legion and Colby VFW serving as Commander in 1976.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, three children, K.G. (Deb) Kersenbrock, Colby, Kathy (Mark) Ostmeyer, Colby, and Susan (Dwight) Bowles, Hays, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials include the Northwest Kansas Foundation for Hope, Colby High School Athletic Fund and the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27th, at the Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel, 745 S. Country Club Dr., Colby, KS.

Christine Marie McNeill

Christine Marie McNeill, age 63, passed away on November 20, 2018 at her residence in Garden City, Kansas. She was born on June 25, 1955 in Newton, Kansas the daughter of Henry Jr. and Charlene (Casey) Hill.

She Graduated from Newton High School in 1973 and received an Associates Degree from Hutchinson Community College in 1975.

On September 27, 1975 she married William McNeill at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Newton, Kansas.

She was a member of the Garden City community since 1996 after leaving McPherson, Kansas. Christine was also a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe of Newton.

She loved being a grandma, mom, visiting family, making crafts, sewing, landscaping, reading, and always putting others before herself.

Marie (McKie) Hewett

Marie (McKie) Hewett, beloved daughter of Sam and Martha McKie, was born in Gaylord, Kansas on January 3, 1916, and peacefully passed away at her home in Norton on November 19, 2018, at the age of 102.

Marie lived with her parents on a farm north of Densmore during her school years. She attended Pikes Peak Rural Grade School until her graduation from the 8th grade in 1929. Marie went on to attend Densmore High School and graduated in 1933. In 1934, Marie began her career as a school teacher at the Pikes Peak Rural Grade School where she taught for 11 years. On November 30, 1935, Marie married the love of her life, Francis Hewett in Mankato, Kansas. They made their home in Norton in 1948, where Marie and Francis were the owners of the Center Café for 22 years.

Marie enjoyed going to auctions, watching tv, reading, and collecting dolls. She loved her cats, but her greatest love was her family, especially her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Survivors include: one son, Raymond, and wife, Karren Hewett, Aurora, Colorado; one daughter, Linda, and husband, Pat Donovan, Norton, Kansas; one brother-in-law, Joe, and wife, Mary Hewett, Longview, Texas; one sister-in-law, Irene Hewett, Dayton Beach, Florida; her caregiver and friend of 11 years, Bobbie Stewart; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several other relatives and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, Lula Faye Beach Spaulding, daughter, Janet Keiswetter, and son-in-law, Boyd Keiswetter

Karen Sue Bishop

Karen Sue Bishop, 78, passed away November 21, 2018, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born January 11, 1940 at Russell County, Kansas to August & Adelia (Depiesse) Schremmer. She married Paul R. Bishop on August 24, 1968 at Great Bend. He died May 9, 2016.

A resident of Great Bend, Karen was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was a former secretary of the Hoisington Horse Shoe Club and a cook for USD 428 for 20 years. She loved to fish, camp and play cards.

Survivors include, three brothers, Ron L. Schremmer and wife Betty, Bill J. Schremmer and wife Bonnie and Gene E. Schremmer and wife Cheryl; two sisters, Patricia A. Proksch and husband Richard and Lois L. Klug and husband Leon, all of Hoisington; sister-in-law, Helen Schremmer of Great Bend, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Bishop; two daughters, Cherie Bishop Phillipi and Tammy Bishop, and two brothers, James A. and wife, Mary Katherine Schremmer and Earl L. Schremmer.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, November 23, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 24, 2018, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore presiding. Margaret ‘Mae’ Van Eaton

Margaret “Mae” Van Eaton, 93, of Oakley, died Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at the Logan County Manor, in Oakley. She was born August 2, 1925, in Rozel, KS, to John and Elizabeth (Bott) Boese. On January 18, 1941, in Larned, KS, Mae was united in marriage to Gerald “G.W.” Van Eaton, her husband of 75 years, until his passing on November 16, 2015. They moved to a farm South of Monument, KS in 1947, where Mae cared for their children and was a farm wife. They later moved to Mingo and then Oakley. She enjoyed playing the organ and going to card parties. Mae was a member of the Monument Mothers Club and the Willing Workers.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents; husband G.W. Van Eaton and sisters, Hulda Haberman and Dorothy Boese.

She is survived by her daughters, Geraldine Van Eaton, of Hays, KS, Joyce (Charlie) Homm, of Oakley, KS and Marjorie (Darryl) Dohm, of Grinnell, KS; son, Steven (Pam) Van Eaton, of Monument, KS; as well as five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 22, 2018, at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. Funeral Service is 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 23, 2018, also at the Mortuary, with burial to follow in the Oakley City Cemetery.
