Viola Rohr, age 88, of Hays, Kansas passed away Thursday, November 15, 2018 at Via Christi Village, Hays.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be Friday 5 PM – 8 PM and Saturday 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

A combined rosary and vigil service will be 7 PM on Friday at the funeral chapel.

Donald Austin Stuvick

Donald Austin Stuvick, son of Austin and Gladys (Dodson) Stuvick, was born January 25, 1929, in Adams County, Iowa, and passed away at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas, on November 10, 2018, at the age of 89.

Don grew up in the Red Oak, Iowa, community and graduated from the Villisca High School. He also served his country in the U.S. Army. On February 17, 1957, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Good, in Red Oak. They moved to Junction City, Kansas in April 1958, and later to Norton in October 1962, where Don managed the J.C. Penney store for many years. Dorothy passed away July 1, 2011. Don remained in Norton where was active in the community.

Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Norton, where he served as treasurer for many years and was a long time member of the Norton Lions Club where he helped with the blood drive and had personally donated over 10 gallons of blood. Don was also a volunteer of Norton Cares, where he was a driver, making over 200 trips in helping others. Don enjoyed taking walks and was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan. He enjoyed college baseball and was a regular at the college world series. He was also a very big supporter of the local Norton sporting events.

Survivors include: two sons, David (Rhonda) Stuvick, Garden City, Kansas, and Douglas (Gina) Stuvick, Highlands Ranch, Colorado; one daughter, Diane Schlageck, Munjor, Kansas; one brother, Loren Stuvick, Huntley, Illinois; one sister, Karen Kraft, Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and sister-in-law, Virginia Stuvick.

Cindy Ann DeLeon

Cindy Ann DeLeon, age 54, left this earthly life on Tues., Nov. 13, 2018 at the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS. She was born on Dec. 18, 1963 in Beloit, KS to Robert H. & B. Irene (Byers) Elniff Shelton.

Cindy graduated from Jewell High School in 1982. She attended Cloud County Community College, Ft. Hays State University & Kansas State University. She married David H. DeLeon on Nov. 25, 2001 in Hutchinson, KS. She worked as a caregiver for home healthcare, as a Para-educator in the public schools and for the Randall City Clerk’s office. She was a member of the Concordia Wesleyan Church, Celebrate Recovery & the Jewell United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir and the United Methodist Women.

She is survived by her husband, David of the home; children, Cianna, of the home, Jenna, Hays & Valentin, Asheville, NC; brothers, Ron Elniff (Heidy), Concordia, Jay Shelton (Pam), Norton & Kevin Shelton (Myrna), Randall; sister, Marlene Kenyon (Alan), K.C., MO; step-mother, Mary Shelton, Jewell; several nieces, nephews and a host of relatives & friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Monday, Nov. 19, 2018 at The Wesleyan Church, Concordia with Rev. David Redmond & Pastor Bob Burns officiating. Eugenia Lucille Pfannenstiel

Eugenia Lucille Pfannenstiel

Eugenia Lucille Pfannenstiel, 91, Hays, died Monday, November 12, 2018 at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born September 24, 1927 in Copperas Cove, Texas one of eight children to George and Delores (Helmecke) Deorsam.  She graduated from Gatesville High School and was a homemaker.  On November 12, 1945 she was united in marriage to Henry Pfannenstiel in Munjor, Kansas.  Eugenia died on what would have been her and Henry’s 73rd wedding anniversary, however Henry preceded her in death on October 5, 2015, just shy of their 70th wedding anniversary.

She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and she loved Charlie Pride music, admired beauty and flowers, enjoyed gift giving for the grandchildren and great grandchildren, and she was always there when needed.  She painted china, noticed details, was an antiques dealer, the family cook, and she possessed a great sense of humor and loved life and everything in it.  After many years of not allowing a pet in the home, she was smitten by her beloved cat Alex.

Survivors include three sons; Dennis Pfannenstiel and wife Crystal of Port St. Lucie, FL, Merle Pfannenstiel and wife Romey of Garland, TX, and Gary Pfannenstiel of Hays, five daughters; Audrey Herold and husband Ron of Hays, Marsha Hupfer and husband Dennis of Shawnee, and Brenda Kroeger, Karen Gilmore and husband Louie, and Pamela Allen, all of Hays, fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry, three brothers; Louies, Carl Lee, and Raymond Deorsam, and four sisters; Tillie Kindler, Edna Haedge, Lillie Schaub, and Irene Phillips.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, with Fr. Barry Brinkman officiating.  Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Friday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Saturday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to Hospice of HaysMed or to the Hays Good Samaritan Society, in care of the funeral home.

Doris Witthuhn

Doris Witthuhn

Doris Witthuhn, age 87, of Hays, Kansas died Sunday, November 11, 2018, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born July 9, 1931, in rural Rush County, Kansas to Jerry S. and Edna Mae (West) Liggett. She married William A. “Bill” Witthuhn on September 2, 1952 at Bazine, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 10, 2018.

She was a homemaker. Doris and her husband, Bill were co-owners with her brother-in-law and sister-in-law of Hen House Ceramics in Hays. She moved to Hays in 1987, having lived in Fort Worth, TX, Great Bend and in Wichita where she and her husband owned Sunflower Ceramics for about 5 years.

She grew up in Rush County and was a 1948 graduate of LaCrosse High School. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and a volunteer at the Hays Medical Center Gift Shop. Doris enjoyed flower gardening, crafts, painting, playing cards and collecting Santas.

Survivors include two sons, Richard J. Witthuhn and wife, Traci, Cape Fair, MO; Donnie L. Witthuhn, Wichita, KS; one daughter, Jeannie Wideman and husband, Roy, Hays, KS; one brother, John Liggett and wife, Rita, Rush Center, KS; one sister, Judy McCoy, Overland Park, KS; one sister-in-law, Elaine Witthuhn, Hays, KS; four grandchildren, Brent (Mandy) Witthuhn; Crystal (Isaac) Perez; Jennifer (Mark) Adams; Tim (Paige) Wideman; ten great grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; two brothers, Donnie Liggett and Duane “Jake” Liggett; one sister, Sharon Mendenhall and husband, Jack; one brother-in-law, Lester “Booger” Witthuhn; one infant brother and one infant sister, Vernon Leroy Liggett and Lorna Mae Liggett.

Services are 11:00 a.m.Thursday, November 15, 2018, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. A private family inurnment will be at the Bazine Cemetery, Bazine, Kansas at a later date.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

The family suggests memorial to Messiah Lutheran Church.

Angela Marie Stecklein Friess

Angela Marie Stecklein Friess, age 99, passed away on November 11, 2018 at Cedar Village, Ness City, Kansas.  She was born on January 17, 1919 in Ness County, Kansas the daughter of Paul and Cecilia (Klaus) Gabel.

At the young age of 13 she entered the Adorers of Precious Blood Convent in Wichita on August 25, 1932. She served as a nun for 32 years before leaving on June 3, 1964.  She received her Masters in Education from Creighton University in 1961.  She taught in many schools in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas. She ended her teaching career at Sacred Heart School in Ness City.  She played the organ for Sacred Heart Church and was a member of the Altar Society.

On August 1, 1964 she married Isadore Stecklein in LaCrosse, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on January 4, 1984.  She then married Lewis Friess on August 31, 1985 in Ness City.  He preceded her in death on August 8, 2011.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Louis, Sebastine, Pete, Mike, Emanuel, and Joe; and ten sisters, Adeline, Regina, Rose, Francis, Pauline, Irene, Louise and two infant sisters.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018, 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 510 S. School St.
Ness City, Kansas, followed by burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Rosary and Parish Vigil will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018, 6:30 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 207 North Pennsylvania Ave., Ness City, Kansas.  Viewing will be on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given toward masses or to the Sacred Heart School.

David F. Hertel

David F. Hertel

David F. Hertel, 64, Louisville, CO, formerly of Hays, died Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Juniper Village in Louisville.

He was born November 16, 1953 in Hays, the son of Albinus F. “Al” and Lucy C. (Lietz) Hertel. He was a graduate of Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in the class of 1972 and received an associate degree from Fort Hays State University. On May 17, 1974 he was united in marriage to Virginia Stecklein at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor. They celebrated over 44 years of marriage.

He was an oilfield roustabout and pumper and worked at Stecklein Oil Company and Hertel Tank Service, a family business. He loved cutting wheat and custom cutting. David received the Hays All American Citizen Award in 1996, he taught first and seventh grade religion classes at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and he and Virginia sponsored couples through Engaged Encounters.

His memberships include St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. Joseph Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #1325.

Hobbies included woodworking, making functioning miniature pumping units, and he loved to tinker and could fix anything. He was very patient, stuck with a project until it was completed, and most of all, he loved his family and they always came first.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Arvada, CO, two daughters; Christina Hertel and partner Stacy Kadota of Arvada and Lisa Hertel and husband Heath Ritchie of Westminster, CO, two brothers; Mike Hertel and wife Lori and John Hertel and wife Laura, all of Hays, a sister; Kathy and husband Patrick Thrash of Eastvale, CA, two grandsons; Spencer and Caden Hertel-Kadota of Arvada, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on David’s birthday, Friday, November 16, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 215 W. 13th Street, with Fr. Fred Gatschet officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Francis Cemetery, Munjor. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Friday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 5:00 pm, a vigil service will be at 6:30, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00, all on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to TMP-Marian High School or the Alzheimer’s Association, in care of the funeral chapel.

Danny W. Fuller

Danny W. Fuller, 59, Hays, died Saturday, November 10, 2018 at HaysMed.

He was born October 19, 1959 in Paducah, Kentucky the son of W.D. and Mabel E. (Snyder) Fuller.  He grew up in Tribune, Kansas and while in high school participated in track and field in high jump, long jump and hurdles, and held numerous state records.  He married Suellen Pritchard in May of 1979.  They later divorced.  On March 10, 2000 he was united in marriage to Kristina “Tina” Proctor in Dighton.  They celebrated over 18 years of marriage.  He worked various jobs which included pulling water wells, hauling salt water, hauling grain, working in feed lot mills, and farm work.  He also worked at Denny’s Grocery Store in Scott City.  Danny loved to fishing, camping, woodworking, and he loved to barbecue.  He was an avid Coca Cola collector and could tinker and fix anything.  His family was very important to him, and he loved spending time with his girls.

Survivors include his wife Tina of the home in Hays, four daughters; Kris Dayley and husband Christopher, Dana Fuller and fiancé Jessica Basart, Lindsey Fuller and husband Jeremy, all of Spokane, WA, Davina Beeson of Hays, a son; Derrick Beeson of Healy, an adopted step-daughter; Cheyenne Oien of Spokane, WA, a sister; Peggy Fox of Springfield, MO, his first wife; Suellen Pritchard of Spokane, WA, six grandchildren; Dayvn, Zaynie, Ethan, Dain, Aiden, and Lylli, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers; Bubby, Joe, Jerry, Gene, Johnnie, and Billy Mack, and six sisters; Janet Ann Smith, Diane Church, Betty Sue Fuller, Gail Lynn Millirons, Pam Fuller, and Lyda Carol Burton.

A memorial service will be at 10:00 am MST on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the First Baptist Church, 413 W. Maxine P. Biles

Maxine P. Biles, age 88, of Hays, KS and formerly of Soap Lake, Washington, passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Via Christi Village of Hays. She was born on March 18, 1930 in Mt. Vernon, WA.

Survivors include four sons, Fred Biles of White Swan, WA, Richard Biles of Soap Lake, WA, Frank Biles of Moses Lake, WA, Robert Biles of Prosser, WA; one daughter, Rose Hawkins and her husband Russell of Plainville, KS; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Maxine is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn Biles; son, Glen Biles; brother, Fred; two sisters, Jenny and Esther.

Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Phillipsburg native, Richard Lee Lamp, passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, CO, at the age of 58. He was born January 27, 1960 in Phillipsburg, KS, the son of Robert Lamp Sr. & Geraldine (Mennenga) Lamp.

Survivors include his brothers, Robert Lamp of Phillipsburg, KS; Rod Lamp of North Platte, NE; and Sister, Rhonda Lamp of Hoyt, KS.

Cremation was planned. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rose Marie Koerner, 74, Hays, died Saturday, November 10, 2018 at HaysMed.

She was born April 4, 1944 in Hays, the daughter of Joe C. and Catherine (Wasinger) Stecklein. On November 27, 1965 she was united in marriage to Melvin G. “Mel” Koerner in Hays. They celebrated over 51 years of marriage until his death on February 2, 2017. For 30 years she worked the third shift as a certified nursing aide at Via Christi Village, and she was member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Her hobbies included baking, crocheting, crafts, casino trips, playing bingo, and shopping trips to Walmart. She loved her dog, Teddy and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters; Lisa M. Fose and husband Joel of Moundridge and Tamala LaPosa and husband John of Wichita, two brothers; Leroy Stecklein of Osawatomie and Ron Stecklein and wife Linda of Olathe, two sisters; Theresa Gottschalk of Hays and Charlene Weigel and husband Dennis of Gorham, four grandchildren; Trina, Ashley, Scott, and Heather Hupka, seven great-grandchildren; Evelyn White, Nathaniel Galle, Addilynn Gerrild, Lexi Gerrild, Tori Keller, Drake Leach, and Brooklynn Baumann, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Melvin, three brothers; Rich, Elmer, and Donnie Stecklein, and one sister; Dolores Dreher.
