Norma Hobson

Norma Hobson, the daughter of Clinton and Velma Leone (McKinney) Edwards, was born on July 28, 1935 on farm near Hardy, Nebraska in Jewell County Kansas. She passed away on November 6, 2018 at the Belleville Health Care Center at Belleville, Kansas at the age of 83 years, 3 months, 9 days.

Norma was one of twelve children. She graduated valedictorian from Hardy High School. She was united in marriage to Elvin “Spud” Hobson on October 10, 1954 in Edgar, Nebraska. This union was blessed with three children Scott, Tony and Ann.

Norma taught school for 1 year and was the bookkeeper for Lynn Motor Company which is presently Alexander Motors. She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, and she collected tea pots. She was a 4-H leader and a member of the Union Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School and belonged to the WCU. She was a Harmonettes member and enjoyed playing pinochle.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband Elvin “Spud” on August 21, 2017; 5 brothers Robert, George, Russell, Don and Bruce Edwards; and her sister Elsie Tallent.

She is survived by her sons Scott of Hastings, Nebraska and Tony (Becky) of Hays, Kansas and one daughter Ann Hobson of Superior, Nebraska. Seven grandchildren, Jason Hobson, Mandy Kamykowski, Mackenzie Oberst, Jordan Tuma, Shae Tuma, Samantha Hobson and Cash Hobson; nine great- grandchildren; brothers Paul Edwards of York, and Glenn (JoAnn) of Hardy and Kenny of Sabetha, Kansas; sisters Margaret Tomlinson of Lincoln and Donna (Jim) Miller of Superior; sisters-in-law Marilyn Edwards of Omaha, Lorelei Edwards of Geneva and Joan Edwards of Superior; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Laura B. Arnold

Larned – Laura B. Arnold, 90, passed away November 10, 2018 at home peacefully surrounded by family.

She was born July 9, 1928 in Sylvan Grove, Kansas. The daughter of Stanley E. and Helen Jane Lawson Raffety. A longtime area resident; she was a Medical Record Clerk at Larned State Hospital, retiring in 1991.

She was a member of the Larned United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, the Sweet Adelines and was the First Lady of Larned while Ralph was Mayor.

On May 29, 1949 she married Ralph C. Arnold in Manhattan. He passed away September 5, 2014.

Survivors include; a son, Stan (Patsy) Arnold, Grand Island, Nebraska; two daughters, Dru (Derry) Dougan, and Jane Grandy (Phil Garcia), both of Larned; six grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by; a brother, Virgil Raffety and a sister, Jane Icks.

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Ryan Webster presiding. Friends may sign the register from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday with family present from 6-7 p.m. at the mortuary. Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

Joseph Charles ‘Joe’ Bloomer

Joseph Charles “Joe” Bloomer, 83, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, November 9, 2018 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Joe was born December 9, 1934, on the family farm in Smith County, Kansas. He was the middle child of three boys born to James Charles and Nettie Alice (Baker) Bloomer. He attended school in Smith County.

Joe served his country in the U.S. Army during the period of time after the Korean War. After his tour of duty, he returned to Smith County.

Joe was a farmer in Smith County most of his life. He enjoyed raising hogs and dogs. Later he worked for the U.S. Mail as a contract deliveryman and he ran a chain sharpening business.

Joe met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Margaret Helen Winter on September 14, 1991 in Russell. They made their home in Russell County. She preceded him in death on December 18, 2015. He enjoyed attending McDonalds in the morning for coffee with his friends and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Joe’s surviving family includes 2 step daughters, Cheryl Nelson of Great Bend, Kansas and Kathy Louder (Mike) of Russell, Kansas; two brothers, Brig. Gen. William A. Bloomer (Sharon) of Wichita, Kansas and James Bloomar (Phyllis) of Topeka, Kansas; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Margaret.

Celebration of Joe’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma. Burial will follow at the Natoma Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Robert Jack Benn

SMITH CENTER, KS – Robert Jack Benn, age 82, passed away peacefully November 10, 2018 at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center Kansas.

He was born August 2, 1936 in Troy, KS to Joseph Francis and Dorothy Lamb Benn. He was raised in Troy and a graduate of Troy High School. He attended Highland Community College where he played football and then attended the University of Kansas.

He was employed by the Soil Conservation Service in Doniphan Co. and was transferred to Smith Center in 1958. He had a 30-year career and retired in 1986. Jack met Arlene Ruth Sasse and they were married December 4th, 1960. Jack loved hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors. His two favorite sports were baseball and football. He especially enjoyed coaching youth baseball and following Smith Center Redmen football. Jack and Arlene loved to travel and spent their winters in Rockport, Texas and many summers in Canada. He loved to cook and entertain his friends and family. Jack was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Soil Conservation Society of America and served on the Library Board.

Jack is survived by his wife Arlene of 58 years, and one son Dirk (Sarah) of Adel, IA. Grandchildren Dylan of Indianola, IA, and Carson of Rolla, MO. He is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two sisters Mary and Patti, and his niece Candi.

Bonnie Bell Patchen Steele

Bonnie Bell Patchen Steele, 90, peacefully passed away November 7, 2018 under the care of Pathways Hospice in Loveland, Colorado.

Bonnie was born on December 4, 1927 in Jetmore, Kansas, to Vernon W. Koontz and Carrie Etta Rumford Koontz. She graduated from Jetmore High School in 1945 and attended one year at Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas. In her early years, Bonnie enjoyed singing with her siblings and worked at the Koontz Mercantile, her father’s grocery/clothing store.

Bonnie married Charlie (Chuck) W. Patchen on May 5, 1947, in her family home and began fifty adventurous years as a farm wife on the Pawnee Creek in northwest Hodgeman County, Kansas. To this union, four children were born.

From 1947-1958, Chuck and Bonnie and family lived in a two-room cabin on the Sinclair ranch in the North Roscoe township. In 1958, they moved five miles away to Chuck’s parent’s native stone farmhouse located 20 miles northwest of Jetmore.

Bonnie cherished her time being part of the ‘North Roscoe mother team’ raising her children while enjoying the many neighboring kids. Bonnie was a gifted cook, gardener and seamstress and was actively involved in the operational aspects of wheat farming and cattle ranching. Along with her husband, she drove tractors and harvest trucks and tended to cattle, sheep and chickens. She was a leader with the Jolly Jayhawkers 4-H Club in which all of her children participated. With family and friends, Bonnie enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage and the country life of fishing, coon hunting and searching out Indian artifacts prevalent in the area.

Bonnie’s dear husband, Chuck, passed in 1994. Two years later, she moved off the farm and back to her hometown of Jetmore.

Bonnie married Wilbur (Bill) Steele on September 10, 2001. Living in Branson, MO for ten years, they enjoyed hosting guests, seeing shows and Bonnie challenged herself with the use of computers and the smart phone. In 2014, Bill and Bonnie moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, to be closer to family. Bill passed in 2016.

Bonnie was proceeded in death by her mother in 1931, father in 1965, and step-mother, Lillian, in 1962; two brothers, Dale (infant) Koontz and Wayne Koontz; two sisters, Jean Barrows and Betty Burgert; two half-brothers, Ward and Denzil Koontz; half-sister, Ella Mae Mann and two grandsons.

Bonnie is survived by her half-sister, Eva Koontz, Kansas City, MO; daughters, Linda (Sonny) Diehl, Fort Collins, CO and Peggy (Bob) Rinne, Seattle, WA; and sons, Larry (Pat) Patchen, Pagosa Springs, CO and Terry Patchen, Las Vegas, NV; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Bonnie will be interred at the Fairmount Cemetery in Jetmore, KS. A memorial service will be held Memorial Day 2019.

Warren Dale Lewallen

Warren Dale Lewallen was born March 21, 1953 in Oakley, Kansas. Warren passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2018 under the care of Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs at the age of 65.

Warren was the 2nd of 4 children born to Gene and Betty Lewallen of Oakley. He graduated from Oakley High School in 1971. As a student; Warren participated in sports through school including football, basketball, wrestling and track. With the influence of musical parents, he also sang in school choirs and in the choir at the United Methodist Church in Oakley.

While attending Fort Hays State University from 1973-1978, he obtained a Bachelor of Music Degree as a voice major with a K-12 certification. He also played clarinet and bass clarinet in concert and marching band through high school and college. His teaching career led him to Colorado, a state he grew up loving as he vacationed with family at his grandparents’ home in Idaho Springs. He taught K-12 Music in Grenada and Fleming, Colorado before returning to Kansas and retiring in Garden City.

After Warren’s retirement, he moved back to be close to his dad in his hometown of Oakley where he resided until his father died. He then moved to Colorado Springs in March, 2018 to be closer to his 2 sisters and nephews. He enjoyed his 10th floor apartment overlooking beautiful Cheyenne Mountain, Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods.

Those who knew Warren saw his love for nature, humor, interest in people, and enjoyment in playing cards and board games. His special memories included snow and water skiing, running in the Boulder 10K run with his brother, Wayne, and fishing with Wayne and his dad. He also enjoyed traveling and camping. His passion grew from participating in sports when younger to watching sports and he particularly looked forward to Nascar, horseracing, football and basketball.

Preceding him in death were his mother and father; paternal grandparents, Bill and Bonnie Crownover; maternal grandparents, Ralph and Pearl Trego, Ray Nye, and beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. Warren is survived by older brother Wayne (Priscilla) Lewallen of Dallas, OR; younger sisters, Wilma Sue (Bob) Schuckert; Wendy (Rudi) Hofmann and grandsons Logan and Hans Hofmann, all of Canon City, CO.

A memorial service will be Saturday, January 5th, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home in Oakley. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to: Fort Hays State University, 600 Park Street, Music Dept. at Malloy Hall 137, Hays, KS 67601.

Anne Christine (Kelly) Walters

Anne Christine (Kelly) Walters, age 69, of Hays, KS, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at Via Christi Village in Hays.

She was born September 18, 1949 in Detroit, Michigan to John Lawrence Kelly and Dorothy Jeanne (Peters) Kelly. At age 7 the family moved to the Kansas City area settling in Leawood, Kansas.

She graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1967. She received her nursing degree from Avila College in Kansas City. After being employed at General Hospital and Menorah Medical Center in Kansas City she entered medical school at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She interned at Truman Medical Center.

Chris (Dr. Chris by her patients) moved to Hays in 1982 and joined Surgical Associates. After marrying Jim Walters on May 29, 1987, she started a medical/surgical practice specifically for the disease of the breast. Her patients frequently called themselves “Kelly Girls”. Chris devoted herself to her faith, family and patients. She retired in 2010 due to Alzheimers Disease.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she also served on church council, Cancer Council and multiple medical organizations.

She is survived by her husband Jim of the home; two daughters, Jamie Walters of Kansas City and Jackie Hertel and husband Matt of San Diego, CA; a step son, Jason Walters and wife Kerri and their daughter Natalie all of Eules, TX; a sister, Barb Kelly of Kansas City; a sister-in-law, Janet Kelly and her son, Jack of Wentsville, MO; a sister, a sister-in-law, Karen Dreher and husband Ron of Hays; a brother-in-law, Herb Walters of Hays and a sister-in-law, Marie Shields of St. John, KS as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents John in 1965 and Dorothy in 1997 and a brother John in 2014.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 12, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 201 W. 13th St., Hays, KS. Inurnment will follow services at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be on Sunday, November 11, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. and Monday from 10:00 to 10:30 A.M. all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine St., Hays, KS 67601.

A rosary service will be recited at 7:00 P.M., followed by a parish vigil service all at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Holy Family Elementary School and/or TMP-Marian. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.

Larry LeRoy Thompson

Larry LeRoy Thompson, 80, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, November 06, 2018, at the Wheatland Nursing Center ins Russell, Kansas.

Larry was born on October 28, 1938, in Edwardsville, Illinois, the son of Leanis LeRoy and Isal G. (Powers) Thompson. He grew up in Edwardsville and graduated from Edwardsville High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served at the end of the Korean war and beginning of the Vietnam war. After serving his country he came back to Edwardsville and eventually started his own very successful business as a guttering and siding contractor for many years. He eventually moved to Russell, Kansas, and has called Russell his home for 20 years. He was a member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 and was a member of the American Legion in Edwardsville. He loved playing golf and spent many of his retirement days on the golf cours with his brother and close friends. He also enjoyed watching Kansas University Basketball and was an avid coin collector.

Surviving family include his daughters Laura Hopper (Tim) of Russell, Kansas, and Dawn St. Peters of Atlanta, Georgia; brother Gary Thompson of Russell; sisters Evelyn Jones of Wood River, Illinois and Virginia Wilhold of Edwardsville, Illinois; 4 grandchildren Josh St. Peters, Jeremy Hopper, Taylor Hopper and Morgan St. Peters and 5 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A private family service will be held at a later date and the family selected cremation. Cards can be sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Brian Kelly Quimby

Sublette – Brian Kelly Quimby, 52, died November 4, 2018 in Haskell County. He was born on October 18, 1966 in Guymon, Oklahoma, the son of Dennie Lee and Vivian Viola (Randle) Quimby.

Brian moved with his family several times before they came to Sublette. He graduated from Sublette High School in 1986. Brian became a father to Ryan on June 30, 1987. He was a devoted father and loved taking his son places. On October 2, 1993, he married Meredith Hall at the Methodist Church in Sublette. They lived in several southwest Kansas towns before returning to Sublette in 2000. Brian worked for Collectia, Seward County and later for Haskell County as a road maintainer. He enjoyed hunting, working on his truck, and everything OU. His family was most important to him. Brian’s laugh and smile will be missed by all who knew him.

He was a member of the NRA.

Brian is survived by his wife, Meredith of Sublette; one son, Ryan Quimby and wife Maddy of Hays; his mother, Vivian Quimby of Sublette; three brothers, Glen Quimby and wife Connie of Satanta, Michael Quimby of Larned, and Jeffery Quimby of Borne, Texas; a sister, Fran Lothman and husband Shane of Wharton, Texas; parents-in-law, Pete and Bev Hall of Sublette; brother-in-law, John Hall and wife Misti of Sublette; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Kane of Wichita and Robin Knight and fiance Paul Brown of Norman, Oklahoma; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Dennie.

Memorial service will be held at Sublette United Methodist Church on Friday November 9, 2018 at 11:30 AM with Mr. Russ Brandon presiding. Friends may sign the guest book at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette on Thursday November 8, 2018 from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. Cremation has taken place and a private family burial will take place at a later time. Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) for Southwest Kansas Youth Hunt in care of the funeral home. Lucile Deloris ‘Blondie’ (Deibert) Paintin

Lucile Deloris “Blondie” (Deibert) Paintin was born on January 1, 1923 in rural Sheridan County near Hoxie, Kansas. She was the first child of Wayne and Minnie (Albertshart) Deibert. She was also welcomed by her two step-sisters, Naomi and Irene whose mother had passed away because of blood poison ten days after Irene was born. Deloris passed away on November 6, 2018 at the Sheridan County Health Complex at the age of 95 years, 9 months, and 6 days.

She attended a country school, and her formal education ended after graduating from 8th grade. She started to work outside of the home to help with the financial needs of her family.

On March 29, 1942, Deloris married David Paintin, and they made their home on the farm southwest of Morland, Kansas until David’s death in 1971. She then made her home to Hoxie, Kansas where she worked at the Hoxie Hospital in the Long Term Care for 22 years.
Four daughters were born to the union of David and Deloris, Katherine Joyce, Linda Kay, Barbara Sue, and Signa Ann. Her family was very precious to her.

She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church near Studley, Kansas. Deloris was involved in ABW and looked forward to getting together with them.

She enjoyed many things while providing for her family. She spent a lot of her time working in her garden, canning the produce, milking the cows, caring for the yard , and sewing clothes for her daughters and helping them with their commitments. Deloris was a caring individual and would often be found helping someone else in the family or a friend.

Deloris is survived by two daughters, Katherine Simon and her husband Lawrence of Morland, Kansas and Linda Blair and husband Stan of St. Genevieve, Missouri; sister, Clarabell Karns of Fremont, Nebraska; eleven grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parent; husband, David; two daughters, Barbara Paintin and Signa Hinshaw; son-in-law, Frederick Simon; and sisters, Naomi Howard and Irene Alexander.

Deloris was looking forward to this day when she could be home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She will be missed by her family and host of friends.

Zella M. Roeder

Phillipsburg resident Zella M. Roeder passed away November 6, 2018 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 86. She was born April 28, 1932 in Prairie View, KS, the daughter of William and Johanna (Jeurink) McKinley. She was a school teacher.

Survivors include her daughter, Kim Yoxall of Kansas City, KS, 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wed. November 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the United Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Chris Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Stuttgart.

Visitation will be from noon to 9:00 Monday and 9:00 to 9:00 Tuesday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Phillipsburg Library or the United Presbyterian Church.
