Mary Lee Casey

Mary Lee Casey, age 95, of Weslaco, TX, (formerly of Grainfield) died Friday, November 2, 2018, in Scottsbluff, NE. She was born January 16, 1923 in Lawrence County, MO to Jamie and Bertha (Brooks) Johnson. She grew up and went to school in Missouri. Mary married David Edward Casey on December 17, 1942 in Albuquerque, NM. They had one son, Douglas.

During World War II, she traveled with her husband to New Mexico, South Dakota, Florida, and Georgia.

She moved to Grainfield in 1945 and that remained her home until 2007, when she moved to Texas. She was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Grainfield. In earlier years, she worked with the Red Cross, American Cancer Society and the Gove County Mental Health Association.

In 1989, she started spending her winters in Texas, where she was very active in sports. She tutored in a school, was a lay leader and sang in the choir in Leisure World Retirement Park Church.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, David, son, Douglas Casey, brothers: Ray, Carol, and Ron Johnson: and sister, Jill Thomas.

Survivors include her grandchildren: Jon Casey of Loveland, CO and Julie (Milo) Cardenas of Bridgeport, NE, six great grandchildren, brother-in-law, Art Thomas, Fairfield, CT, several nieces and nephews, and her beloved friend and companion, Lloyd Walker, St. Charles, LA, and many friends in Kansas and Texas.

Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 8, 2018 at Grainfield United Methodist Church. Visitation: 9:00 a.m. to service time at the church. Interment in Grainfield Cemetery. Miriam L. Wilborn

Miriam L. Wilborn passed away November 4, 2018 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kansas. She was born April 29, 1950, to Oswald and Hazel Schremmer at St. Rose Hospital, Great Bend, Kansas.

She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Virgil L. Schremmer, two nephews, Shawn Schremmer and Kevin Wilborn.

Survivors include husband, Keith Wilborn, of the home. Children, Brian (Cindy) Wilborn of Hoisington, Krista (Ben) Brewer of Hoisington and Kari (Chad) Bloomer of Ottawa, KS. Nine grandchildren, Hannah (Colton) Lagerman of Altanta, GA, Madison Wilborn of Hays, KS, Nolan Wilborn, Hoisington. Avery Brewer and Livvy Brewer of Hoisington. Chandler Bloomer of Great Bend, Chase Bloomer and Boston Bloomer of Ottawa, KS. Sister, Marcia Schremmer of Hoisington.

Miriam’s civic interest was very obvious. She was past president of the Hoisington Chamber of Commerce, past president of Chamber Ambassador Club, past president of Hoisington Business Professional Women organization, member of V.F.W. Auxillary. She was very active in St. John Catholic Church and parish council.

Her professional endeavors included 28 years as a professional Real Estate agent. She worked with Keenan Real Estate and later Keller Real Estate Inc. until her retirement in April 2015.

In her spare time, she enjoyed working her beautiful flower garden and relaxing with her friends on a weekly bowling league. Miriam was also a big supporter of her grandchildren in both their academic and athletic accomplishments.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., and

Vigil and Rosary at 7 p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30a.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Anselm Eke. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery, Hoisington.

Marvin J. Rupp

Marvin J. Rupp, 88, Hays, died Sunday, November 4, 2018 at HaysMed.

He was born March 25, 1930 in Schoenchen, the son of Andrew and Adeline (Rupp) Rupp. He was a graduate of Hays High School in 1948 and was united in marriage to Shirley A. Rupp on October 9, 1950 in Hays. They celebrated 68 years of marriage. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the third degree Knights of Columbus Council #1325, and the Senior Companion Program.

Marvin was a farmer, dairyman and cattleman and sold and installed dairy equipment. He loved wheat and other crops, and while farming, he received the outstanding farmer award for conservation. He was the co-owner of Ellis County Implement and a custom cutting business, and the owner and operator of Rupp Dairy Farm and Ellis County Dairy Supply. He was a jack of all trades, could fix anything, built houses, was innovative, and always served others. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and storyteller, and he enjoyed genealogy, vegetable gardening, and welding animals out of stainless steel. He had a strong faith in God and often said, “Don’t forget to pray”.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of the home in Hays, a son; Andrew Rupp and wife Kathy of Hays, a daughter; Amy Perez and husband Leonel of Wichita, a daughter-in-law; Elaine Rupp of Hays, a sister; Blanche VonLintel of Hays, eight brothers and sisters-in-law; Connie Wallace, Ron Rupp and wife Marie, Fred Rupp and wife Alicia, Bernie Rupp and wife Dottie, Marlene McGuire, Mary McNamara and husband Mike, Stan Rupp, and Larry Rupp and wife Marq, ten grandchildren; Stephen Rupp, Thomas Rupp, Jonathon Rupp and wife Amanda, Dr. Aaron Rupp, Matthew Applequist, Alex Perez, Vanessa Rupp, Elizabeth Rupp and fiancé Kyle Goetz, Annaka Applequist, and Isabella Perez, two great grandchildren; Ivan Rupp and Amelia Rupp, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son; Stephen Rupp in 1996, an infant daughter; Karen Rupp, and four brothers; Michael M. Rupp, Henry “Hank” Rupp, Francis “Frannie” Rupp, and an infant brother Harland Rupp.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 215 W. 13th Street, with Fr. Fred Gatschet officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday, and from 10:00 am until 10:45 on Wednesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 5:30 pm and a vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 pm, all on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Margaret K. ‘Margie’ Colbert

Margaret K. “Margie” Colbert, 80, passed away November 2, 2018 in Hays.

She was born January 2, 1938 to Alonzo Richard and Alice Olive (Clark) Bell. She married Alvin Roy Colbert, October 28, 1956.

Survivors: husband, Alvin; son, Stanley Alvin, Colbert of New London, Iowa; daughter, Janet Katherine (John) Scott of Riverside, Rhode Island; two grandchildren; and sister, Wilda Winthe Mattke of McPherson.

Imelda D. ‘Millie’ Flax

Imelda D. “Millie” Flax, 82, Hays, died Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Brookdale Senior Living in Hays.

She was born October 9, 1936 in Hays the daughter of Isidore and Lidwina (Younker) Kreutzer. She was a graduate of Hays High School in 1954 and on April 26, 1955 she was united in marriage to Frank W. Flax in Hyacinth, Kansas. They celebrated over fifty years of marriage before he preceded her in death on July 9, 2005. She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella Circle #254, and was a former member of the Sunflower Polka Club. She was a homemaker, enjoyed sewing, and she often commented that “dancing was her joy in life.”

Wanda Lorraine (Houston) Smith

Wanda Lorraine (Houston) Smith, age 87. Passed away on Friday, October 19, 2018 at Greeley County Long Term Care in Tribune, Kansas. Wanda was born on November 29, 1930 in Raymond, Kansas, to William “Bill” & Blanche Viola Jeffery Houston.

On July 22, 1949, she married Dearld Milton Smith in Tribune, Kansas.

Wanda was always very involved in the community with Dance Club, Golf Course, Holland Park, Pride, Library, Tennis Courts, and many other projects. She was always willing to help in any way she could.

She spent hours working in her yard and it was beautiful. She also enjoyed photography, stained glass, scrapbooking- she loved making cards, macramé, bowling, golfing, playing tennis and dancing with the love of her life, Dearld.

She was a resident of Tribune, Kansas, moving here in 1947. She started as a Senior in High School. Wanda began her career at Greeley County Schools in 1960 as the School Secretary and later served as the Clerk of the Board. She retired in 1992. She later worked for the Greeley County Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include son, Randall & Connie Smith, Tribune, Kansas, daughter, Marla and Gary Graham, Engelwood, Colorado. Three siblings, Lawrence Houston and Cecile Shepherd, Tribune, Kansas and Roger Houston, Lakewood, Colorado. Four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Her parents. Husband, and daughter, Marilyn Klein, precede her in death.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 29, 2018 at the Presbyterian Church at 10:30 a.m. A private inurnment will be held at Greeley County Cemetery.

Michael Joseph Hrabe

Michael Joseph Hrabe, 73, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS.

Michael was born November 26, 1944 in Smith Center, KS, the son of George Joseph and Lois Virginia (Schoeni) Hrabe. On September 6, 1964 he married Diann Ruth Johnson in Kirwin, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Michael is survived by his wife Diann Hrabe of Kensington; three sons, Michael Shane (Laura) Hrabe of McPherson, Joel (Kendra) Hrabe and Daniel Hrabe all of Kensington and six grandchildren.

A Celebration of Michael’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 8, 2018 at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, Smith Center, KS, with Pastor Tom James officiating. There will not be a public visitation as cremation was chosen. Memorials may be given to Fort Bissell Saddle Club of Phillipsburg and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Barbara Ann Ginther

Barbara Ann Ginther, 86, passed away November 2, 2018 at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore.

She was born January 2, 1932 in Hill City, the daughter of Carroll and Catherine Peltier Wainwright. A longtime area resident, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and FCE, both of Jetmore and Builders Sunday School at the Garden City United Methodist Church.

On August 14, 1949, she married Verlyn I. Ginther in Hill City. He died April 6, 2015.

Survivors include: two sons, Carroll (Tammy) Ginther, Kalvesta and Douglas Ginther, Wichita; daughter, Kathleen (Bob) Taylor, Prairie Village; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Kenneth and Francis Wainwright.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Jetmore, with Pastor Cyd Stein presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Beckwith Funeral Home, Jetmore. Burial will follow immediately at Garden City Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Frankie A. Gooch

Frankie A. Gooch, 87, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, November 02, 2018, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Frankie was born on November 09, 1930, in Quanah, Texas, the daughter of James Frank and Ethel Belle (Young) Stepp. She grew up in Borger Texas and graduated from Borger High School. She met fell in love and was united in marriage to Corbett Gooch, Jr. on August 02, 1955, in Stinnett, Texas. From this union Frankie and Corbett were blessed with 5 children Cathlene, Lee, Amelia, Patricia and James. The family moved to Russell in 1973, from Borger. Frankie worked as a bookkeeper for Bogart’s Grocery and their family weed spraying business in Russell but her fulltime job was wife and mother to her growing family. She attended the Church of Christ and was a member of the Russell VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, growing house plants, sewing, working puzzles, baking, and playing with her many grandchildren.

Surviving family include her daughter Cathlene McClain, son Lee Wayne Gooch (Sonya), daughter Amelia Heaton, daughter Patricia Parrett and son James Gooch (Pam); 17 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Corbett, sister Mary Francis and a granddaughter.

A memorial service to celebrate Frankie’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, November 07, 2018, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with Pastor Michael Eurit officiating. Cremation has preceded the service and inurnment will follow the services at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. on Tuesday, November 06, 2018, at the mortuary. Family will greet guests the day of the service.

Larry Max Archer

Larry Max Archer of Abilene passed away Thursday, November 1, 2018 at Abilene Place. He was born January 26, 1939 in Almena, Kansas, the son of Tracy and Gladys (Ackinson) Archer.

On October 8, 1960 he was united in marriage to Rita M. Geist in Norton, Kansas. She preceded him in death March 19, 2012.

Max was a Sgt. in the Army during the Vietnam War.

He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Norton County, served as Sheriff of Norton County for 14 years and was a truck driver for 40 years with the last 20 years with Long Island Grain Company.

Family was very important to Max and he enjoyed going to watch them participate in school events.

Max is survived by his son, Mark (Amy) Archer of McPherson; daughters, Lori Fulks of Smithland, Kentucky; Kristi McDowell of Abilene, Kansas; and companion Leta Meats of Abilene.

He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife Rita, 4 brothers, 1 sister and 1 son-in-law.

Funeral Services for Max will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, November 5, 2018 at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home with Father Don Zimmerman officiating. Burial will follow at the Abilene City Cemetery. Parish Rosary will be 5:00 P.M., Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 7:00 P.M. Billy Dean Black

Billy Dean Black of Hoxie, Kansas passed away at the Sheridan County Long Term Care on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at the age of 86. Billy was born to Vernon D. and Ethel G. (Sadil) Black on September 8 1932 in Fairbury , Nebraska. He grew up in Nebraska, Colorado and Kansas.

He served in the United States Navy from 1951-1953. During this time, he served as a pipe fitter on 4 different ships during the Korean War. After being discharged from the Navy, he worked several different jobs until he moved to California in 1956. He worked for the Southern Kern School District for 30 years as the Maintenance Supervisor. After his retirement in 1992, he moved back to Hoxie, Kansas.

Billy is survived by his 2 sisters, Donna Deibert, North Platte, NE and Peno Randolph, Hoxie, KS, and many nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Vernon and Ethel Black, one brother, Omie Black, and two brother-in-laws, Dimp Randolph and Kenneth Deibert.
