Susan Ann Weber

Susan Ann Weber, 66, died October 30, 2018, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

She was born July 26, 1952, in Hoisington, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Martina (Younger) Luebbers. Susan graduated in 1970 from Claflin High School and then in 1974 she received her bachelors of education degree from Kansas State University.

On August 6, 1977, she married her high school sweetheart Roy Weber in Claflin, Kansas.

A lifetime resident of Barton County, Susan was a school teacher in Ellinwood, Claflin, and Bushton, teaching 28 years at all levels but mostly 3rd Grade, retiring in 2014. She was also the co-owner of Weber Four Oil Company.

Susan was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Altar Society, and a former member of the KNEA and NEA.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Roy Weber; son, Christopher John Weber and wife Anne of Wichita; daughter, Tracey McKenna and husband Brett of Claflin; brothers, Mike Luebbers and wife Dawn of Ballwin, Missouri, and Bill Luebbers and wife Becky of Hoisington; five grandchildren, Owen and Matilda Weber, and Tate, Ellie, and Audrey McKenna.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Andy Luebbers, and an infant grandson, Thomas James McKenna.

Friends may call 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Vigil and Rosary will be 5:30 p.m. Friday and Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Saturday, November, 3, 2018, all at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Terrence Klein. Burial will follow in St. Catherine Catholic Cemetery, Dubuque.

Arlan Dean Parker

Arlan Dean Parker, son of Harold H. and Leona M. (Stowell) Parker was born in Cotesfield, NE, on August 12, 1933, and went home to glory on October 29, 2018, in Ness County Hospital at the age of 85 years 2 months, and 17 days.

At a young age, his family moved to the Utica, Shields, Dighton, KS, area where he lived until 1953 at which time he enlisted in the United Sates Navy and served during the Korean War. He was discharged from the Navy in May, 1957.

On June 16, 1957, he married Juanita Kay Pember in Ness City, KS. They shared 61 years of marriage. To this union one son, Harlan Duane was born. A daughter Patricia Anne was adopted in September, 1969, and became an integral part of their family.

After their marriage, Arlan spent the rest of his life in Ness City, During this time, he was a farmer/rancher, custom harvester, store clerk, fuel delivery person, and a custom planter. The highlight was probably when he and Juanita started a herd of registered Salers cattle. Their cattle were recognized for their gentle disposition and ability to produce quality offspring.

After Juanita’s retirement in 1998, the couple enjoyed many trips and cruises together. One of their favorite vacation spots was Branson, MO. Arlan loved the country/western shows. He especially loved driving to Baltimore to see Harlan and his family with a stop in Missouri to see Patty and her family.

Arlan was noted for his ability to listen. If one had a problem, Arlan was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Ness City, and served in many different areas of church life.

He also served as a member of the first Auxiliary Police Group in Ness City.

Survivors include his wife Juanita, son Harlan (Laura) Phoenix, MD; grandchildren Elysha McAdoo, Springfield, MO; Dylan Parker, Townson, MD; Benjamin McAdoo, Lake St. Louis, MO; and Christian Parker, Phoenix, MD. Special friends are Barbie, Taylor, and Brett Scholes, Hutchinson, KS; Mike & Shell Hill, Great Bend,KS, and Caleb and Mandee Rogers and daughters, Polo, MO.

Arlan was preceded in death by his daughter Patricia; two sisters, Mildred Parker, and Pearl Walker, son-in-law Stephen McAdoo, and two brothers-in-law, Bill Walker and Eugene Birdsong.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, at First Baptist Church in Ness City, with internment in Ness City Cemetery.

Memorials to First Baptist Church, Ness City, are suggested.

Rita Kay Case

Rita Kay Case, age 51, of Johnson, Kansas, died Sunday, October 28, 2018, at her home in Johnson, Kansas. She was born September 13, 1967, in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Pete Marion and Joice Joan (Schriner) Marquardt.

Rita graduated from Garden City High School in 1986. While living in Garden City, she worked at McDonald’s and IBP. Rita married Johnny Sauseda, Sr. in 1984, they later divorced. To this union a son, Johnny Sauseda, Jr. was born. Rita married Paul Case on March 22, 1997, in Johnson. Rita was a wife, mother, and a caregiver to her mother for several years. She had also been a substitute mail carrier, cook for Big Bow School, para at Johnson School, receptionist at Stanton County Hospital, and waitress at Hug-A-Mug. Rita enjoyed shopping and hunting for a good bargain.

Rita is survived by her husband, Paul of the home; sons, Johnny Sauseda, Jr. of Lawrence, and Corey Schmidt of North Glenn, Colorado; daughter, Kortney Case of Hays; sisters, Peggy Fecht of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sarah Ludwig of Towanda, Helen Blevins and husband John of Hutchinson; brother-in-law, Ron Bauer of Meade, Kansas; aunt, Norma Hill of Grand Island, Nebraska; and three grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Joice Marion Marquardt and Lesa Bauer.

Funeral service is Friday, November 2, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church in Johnson, Kansas, with Reverend Kurt Rovenstine presiding. Burial will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson, Kansas. Friends may call Thursday, November 1, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson, Kansas.

Albert Douglas ‘Doug’ Hardman

Albert Douglas “Doug” Hardman was born November 7, 1942 in Wichita, Kansas to Irv and LaVergne (Kobler) Hardman. He was the second of five children.

He attended grade school and high school in Hill City, Kansas. He received his Degree in Pharmacy from Kansas University in 1968. Doug enjoyed learning and was always ready to explore new technology and try out new cooking methods and equipment.

He spent most of his professional life in San Francisco working as a pharmacist for Walgreens. Shortly after Doug began his career in San Francisco, he took a leave to join the Peace Corp. He spent time in Brazil and made many lifelong friends while he was there. He then returned to San Francisco for the remainder of his career. After his retirement in 2005, he moved to Guadalajara, Mexico, living there until 2015. He returned to Lawrence, residing there until his death October 21, 2018.

During his life, Doug frequently came back to Kansas to visit friends and family. When our mom needed more support in her later years, Doug was a tremendous help. He had a special way of teasing her that she always enjoyed.

Doug is survived by Blaine and Sharon Hardman, Debbie and Stewart Harley, Nancy Hardman, Mindy and Brad Loveless and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Family and friends were very important to him. His sharp wit and great sense of humor will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Dennis ‘Banjo’ Gerstner

Dennis “Banjo” Gerstner, age 86, of Hays, Kansas passed away Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Hays Medical Center. He was born September 22, 1932, in Hays, to Joseph and Sophia (Schuetz) Gerstner.

He graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1949. After graduation, Dennis enlisted in the US Army serving in the 439th Engineering Organized Reserve Unit. He served in Korea from 1950 – 1952. After his service duty, Dennis worked as an Under Sheriff for Ellis County. He then became a Kansas State Fire Marshall serving Western Kansas until his retirement.

Dennis was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, VFW Post 9076, where he served as commander in 2002-2003. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by 2 sisters, Mary Schmidt of Topeka, KS and Lillian Rohr of Hays; a brother, James Gerstner of Lee’s Summit, MO and a sister-in-law, Marie Gerstner of Surprise, AZ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Leroy “Satch” Gerstner, two brother-in-laws, Harold Schmidt and Julius Rohr, and a sister-in-law, Martha Gerstner.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, November 2, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow services in St. Joseph’s Cemetery with Military Honors courtesy of the Hays VFW Post 9076 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be Thursday 5 PM – 8 PM and Friday 9 AM – 9:30 AM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

A rosary service will be Thursday at 6:45 PM followed by a parish vigil service at 7:00 Pm all at the funeral chapel.

Alan T. Schneweis

Alan T. Schneweis, 57, passed away October 30, 2018, at Ellinwood District Hospital, Ellinwood. He was born December 16, 1960 at Hoisington, to Bernard & Delores (Hoffman) Schneweis. He married Susan Curran on October 9, 1982 at Great Bend. She survives.

A resident of Ellinwood, Alan was the Area Manager for the Great Bend Coop Association. He was a member of the Ellinwood United Methodist Church and a former USD 355 school board member. He loved wood-working, classic cars, was a great handyman around the home and loved to spend time with his family.

Survivors include, wife, Susan of the home; two sons, Travis Schneweis of Wichita and Bryce Schneweis of the home; one daughter, Erin Grosshuesch and husband, Calvin of Kansas City; one grandson, Drew Alan Grosshuesch of Kansas City; his father, Bernard Schneweis of Ellinwood, and six brothers, Leon Schneweis and wife Cinda of Lawrence, Richard Schneweis and wife Debbie of Claflin, Mark Schneweis of Fallon, Nevada, Paul Schneweis and wife Renee of Great Bend, Anthony Schneweis and wife Robin of Manhattan and Mike Schneweis of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his mother, Delores Schneweis.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no viewing. Wake Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, November 9, 2018 at Ellinwood United Methodist Church, with family receiving friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 10, 2018, at United Christian Church, Ellinwood, with Pastor Tom Reazin presiding.

Memorials are suggested to the Ellinwood United Methodist Church or Camp Hope of Barton County, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Lane Rush

Lane Rush died Oct. 28, 2018, in Colby, Kansas.

He was born October 31, 1964 in Colby to Rolland and Merna (Alleman) Rush. He graduated from Brewster High School in 1983 and attended vocational school in Goodland.

Over the years, he worked for Hi-Plains Co-op Association, McKee Sheet Metal, Service Oil Company, and often worked for his parents and his brother on their farms. He married Laura Niblock April 14, 1996.

He was preceded by his parents; brother Neal Rush; grandparents, Francis and Lela Rush and Morris “Slim” and Geneve Alleman.

Surviving are his daughter Kynndra Rush and son Wade Rush of Colby; brother Lynn Rush and wife Cindy of Yukon, OK, sister-in-law Jolene Rush of Brewster and many nieces, nephews and cousins. At Lane’s request, no visitation or funeral service will be held. A private family graveside inurnment service will be at a later date. The Family will greet friends at the Colby United Methodist Church (on the corner of Franklin & Pine) on Thursday, November 1st from 3pm – 6pm.

Carol Hayes

Carol Hayes, age 75, from Hays, Kansas died Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Hays Medical Center Hays, Kansas.

She was born December 22, 1942, in Hingham, Massachusetts to Wilfred and Elsie (Kataja) Loring. She married Robert F. Hayes on December 16, 1961, in Hingham, Massachusetts. He died May 24, 2014.

Carol worked in the banking business for over 25 years in Hays, at Hays State Bank, Emprise Bank and Sunflower Bank. She and her husband operated the Russell Fed-Ex freight route for a number of years. She worked for the 489 School District as a para professional and with the Helping Hands Program. She then worked at the Hays Wal-Mart store as a cashier and greeter. She retired in 2016.

She grew up in Hingham, Massachusetts, and was a graduate of Hingham High School. She lived in Alabama before moving to Hays in the 1960s.

Survivors include two sons, David Hayes and wife, Laura, Matthew Hayes and wife, Crystal, both of Hays, KS; one brother, Bill Loring, Lindsborg, KS; one sister, Janice Loring, Lindsborg, KS; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Hayes; Austin Hayes; Morgan Smull; Dakota Redwing and husband, Zach; Cheyenne Liester; Destiny Liester; Shelly Feldt; and one great grandchild, Alexis Feldt.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 3, 2018, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Saturday, all at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

Leanna Kay (Yates) Wolfe

Leanna Kay (Yates) Wolfe, 73, died Monday, October 29, 2018 at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.

She was born August 20, 1945 in Norton, Kansas the daughter of Lee & Darlene (McFarland) Yates.

Leanna grew up in Norton, Kansas. She graduated from Norton Community High School and Fort Hays State University. On June 5, 1965, she married Randall Dean Wolfe in Norton, Kansas.

Leanna worked as an elementary school teacher for 46 years in the Hays and Lakin school districts. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Lakin Teacher’s Association, KNEA, NEA, and the Lakin 50 Club. She loved kids, music, shopping, traveling, gift giver, roses, beaches, and attending her grandkids events.

Survivors include her husband Randy Wolfe of the home; two daughters Jodi & husband Mike Ashbaugh of Denton, Texas and Kayla & husband Tray Snyder of Coldwater, Kansas; and five Grandchildren Erin & Bryce Ashbaugh, Ashton, Chayde, & Breckyn Snyder.

Leanna is preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Lakin United Methodist Church in Lakin with Rev. Aaron Duell officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 5, 2018 at the Norton Cemetery in Norton, Kansas. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Friday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin, Kansas.

The family suggests memorials given to the Lakin United Methodist Church or to the Kearny County Senior Center both in care of the funeral home.

Margaret Ellen Fikan

Margaret Ellen Fikan, 84, of Atwood, died Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Center in Atwood, KS.

She was born August 22, 1934, in Catlettsburg, KY, to Jess and Flora (Hurt) Robinson. She graduated from high school in Ashland, KY, in 1952 and went to work for Cappel’s Furniture Store as a bookkeeper in Dayton, OH. She met Lyonald John Fikan, who was stationed at Wright Patterson AFB, and they married in March 1955 and moved to his family farm in Atwood.

Margaret grew up as a “city girl” but she adapted well to life on the farm and actively participated in helping her husband with the day-to-day operation of running the farm/ranch. She loved gardening, sewing, cooking, singing, line dancing and spending time with her family and friends. She was an active member of the First Methodist Church, where she taught children’s classes, sang in the choir, played hand bells and cooked and served for funeral dinners. She also volunteered many years at the Good Samaritan Center. She was a hard-working, positive, happy person and will be missed greatly by her friends and family.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lyonald and her brothers, Eugene and Jess Jr. Robinson.

She is survived by her two children, Ron Fikan and wife Colleen, of Atwood and Pam Jesch and husband Don of Bartlesville, OK; four grandchildren, Scott Fikan, of Atwood, Andy Fikan, of Eureka, CA, Blake Jesch and wife Kristin, of Edmond, OK and Heather Conley and husband Nick, of Nashville, TN and two great grandchildren, Kate and Claire Jesch.

Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, November 2, 2018 at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral Service is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2018, at the Atwood United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Gale ‘Buck’ A. Shelton

Gale “Buck” A. Shelton, age 92 of Wellsville, KS passed away Sunday, October 28, 2018 at the Wellsville Retirement Community. Funeral services will be 10AM, Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Wellsville Baptist Church. Visitation will be 5-8PM, Friday evening at Wilson’s Funeral Home. Interment will follow services in the Wellsville Cemetery. Gale Arthur Shelton was born March 22, 1926 in Centerville, Kansas, the son of Arthur Emmett and Blanch Gertrude (Howard) Shelton. He attended school in Parker, Kansas and received his high school diploma from Parker High School in May of 1945, although he was drafted into the US Army on March 22, 1945 to serve his country during WWII. While on active duty, he served as a Storekeeper/Supply Specialist stationed in the Asiatic Pacific/Hawaii. Upon on his honorable discharge on November 26, 1946, he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He continued serving his country by enlisting in the Army Reserves as a Food Service Specialist preparing huge meals for hungry soldiers until November 19, 1961, leaving the service with the rank of Master Sergeant.

On July 5, 1947, he married the love of his life, Doris Joan Gordon in Osawatomie, Kansas. They were married 64 years before her passing in 2012. This union was blessed with 6 children. Gale worked in the Texaco oilfields in South Central and Northwest Kansas until they settled in Franklin County to farm in the late 1950’s. Gale was a farmer at heart and loved harvesting crops as well as caring for livestock. After retiring from farming, Gale worked for Water District 1, the Wellsville Manor, (Wellsville Retirement Community) in maintenance and had a handyman business.

Gale stayed active in the community by volunteering his time and talents. He was well known for his homemade pies, pancakes for New Hope fundraisers and helping prepare meals for charitable fundraising events. Gale was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, the Wellsville American Legion Post 194, the Gardner Masonic Lodge #65, (where he was recently awarded his 65 year service pin), 40 & 8 and the VFW Post 5901.

He is survived by his children: Judy (John) Mickelson of San Pedro, CA; Gale (Edie) Shelton, Jr. of Oklahoma City, OK; Janet Akins of Hutchinson, KS; Jane Shelton of Topeka, KS; Steve (Jennifer Crosby) Shelton of Raytown, MO; his adopted son, Michael Shelton of Little Rock, AR; a sister, Louise Ratliff of Ottawa, KS; 14 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; an infant daughter, Shirley Ann; sisters, Leah and Helen and 2 infant granddaughters, Tina and Ashley Daniels.
