Aaron W. Harman

Aaron Harman was born January 29, 1934 and passed away at Phillips Co Hospital October 16, 2018.

Aaron was born to George and Edith (Van Matre) Harman in Hollinger, Nebraska. He attended school at Oxford, NE where he graduated from High School in 1952.

After high school he started working for Kansas Nebraska Energy Gas Co. in Oxford, NE. In 1955 he met his wife- Darla in Oxford. He was inducted into the U.S. Army that same year. After his basic was finished he returned to Oxford and was married in December 1956. A week after he married he was sent to Korea for two years.

After his discharge from the Army he and his wife returned to Oxford and resumed his employment with K. N. Energy. After living in Oxford for 9 months he was transferred to Holdrege with a promotion. After living in Oxford four years he was transferred to Yuma, CO as service manager. After a year in Yuma, he then went back to Holdrege as the manager of distribution, for five years then was promoted as District manager in Sidney, NE. They lived in Sidney, NE for 18 years. Then transferred to Phillipsburg, as Division Manager, and then as Southern Regional Director of distribution operations in four states.

Aaron was very active in civic organizations wherever he lived. He was a member of the Rotary Club in Sidney, was on board of directors of the country club, and served as president of the Cheyenne County chamber of commerce. He was a member of the Kansas Calvary to promote business in Kansas. With his dedication he was awarded an Honorary Lt. Governor certificate of Kansas

Aaron enjoyed the outdoors, spent several years in Colorado hunting deer with his Dad and brother Phillip. He also fished with several friends from Sidney each year in Canada. After 42 years of employment with KN Energy, he retired and he and his wife Daria traveled, to 17 different countries, including a World War II tour and a trip to the Holy Land.

Aaron was preceded in death by his parents, George and Edith; brother, Phillip Harman; sister, Lois Blincow; and a baby daughter, Jane Marie.

Aaron is survived by his wife DarIa of the home; daughter, Jenay Winters and husband Sam of Gering, NE; daughter, Jacquelyn Mejia and husband Stefan of Montrose, CO; sister, Shirley Hansen and husband Bill of Frisco, TX; a sister in law, Ra Etta Johnson of Eureka, CA; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 22, 2018 at the SS Philip & James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, with Fathers Jose Kumblumikol, Benjamin Saw and Alvin Werth officiating. A Graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday in the Selden Cemetery, Selden, Kansas with Military Honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

A Scriptural Wake Service followed by a Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 21, 2018 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Father Benjamin Saw officiating.

Aaron will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, where the family will receive friends from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. for visitation.

Lorraine Irene Krug

Lorraine Irene Krug, 96, of Russell, Kansas, died on Thursday, October 18, 2018, at Homestead Assisted Living in Russell.

Lorraine was born on October 31, 1921, in Otis, Kansas the daughter of Theophil and Letha (Siegfried) Muth. She grew up on the family farm in Otis and graduated from Otis High School. She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Rudolph C. Krug in September 23, 1940. From this union Lorraine and Rudolph were blessed with 4 children Juanita, Wayne, Shirley and Vernon. She worked full time as a homemaker, taking pride in being a loving wife and mother to her family. Rudolph preceded her in death on March 31, 1974. Lorraine found love a second time and was united in Marriage to Harvey Dean Krug on May 29, 1976. He also preceded her in death on February 24, 1991. She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. She was also a member of the Russell V.F.W. Post. 6240 and American Legion Post 99 Ladies Auxiliaries, Foods 4 H Leader and Prairie Mates. She enjoyed Crocheting, word puzzles, playing cards, dominos, shopping, gardening, caning, cooking, people watching, and watching Wheel Of Fortune and Price Is Right. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her many grandchildren.

Surviving family include her daughter Juanita Flegler and husband Melvin, son Wayne Krug, daughter Shirley Arnhold and husband Ben all of Russell, Kansas and 7 grandchildren Kimberly Stoppel, Kevin Flegler, Kristen Pfeifer, Tony Arnhold, Lorraine Kasten, Alex Arnhold and Darci Baker.

She was precede in death by her parents and 2 husbands, son Vernon Krug, 2 brothers; 1 grandchild and 1 great grandchild.

A celebration of Lorraine’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 22, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. Sunday evening. Memorials can be given to DSNWK and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Gregory Mark Stone

Gregory Mark Stone was born on October 19, 1953, the son of Bernard & Barbara (Howey) Stone in Topeka, Kansas. His battle with cancer ended, Greg entered eternal life on Monday, October 15, 2018, and now rests in the arms of his Heavenly Father.

Because both of his parents were artists, Greg lived in Taos, NM, and Arizona when he was a small child. Later he attended schools in Topeka and graduated in 1971 from Cambridge High School in Ohio. He attended the DeVry Institute in Kansas City and studied electronics. In 1974, he married Cindy Easter, they divorced. In 1989, Greg transferred to Ottawa from Clay Center as the Produce Manager for Ray’s IGA and worked there until it’s closing in 1993. Greg went on to work as a Produce Manager for various grocery stores, including Ball’s Price Chopper in Olathe. He retired July 2016 with Hy-Vee Food Stores in Lawrence. No matter where Greg worked his trade, his customers were always important to him. He wanted to know them by name and offered his extensive product knowledge and his best service to each one.

On May 14, 1993, Greg was united in marriage to Cynthia Goetz in Williamsburg, Kansas. Their marriage was blessed by the Catholic Church on December 15, 1994. In 1986, Greg was baptized at the United Methodist Church, Wakefield, Kansas. He was received into the Catholic faith on November 16, 1995, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa, Kansas. Greg was a devoted husband and father; his greatest love was being Papa to his eleven grandchildren. He was an active member of Sacred Heart and spent many years as the key and vital support for his wife in many roles including the development and implementation of the Benefit Auction for Sacred Heart (BASH).

Greg was kind and generous and his positive attitude was always surrounded by the warmth of his smile. Greg’s art was his music. One of his favorite gospel songs was “Give Me Jesus”. He was an avid collector of classic vinyl in all genres but especially blues and rock n roll. While in high school he played guitar in a band which developed into a lifetime of playing, collecting, and loving all things “guitar”.

Greg is survived by a large and loving family, including his wife, Cynthia, children and grandchildren: Jeremy & Charlene (Macy) Stone, Cooper, Keaton, Macy and Kersley, Ottawa, Kansas; Amanda (Goetz) & Jonathan Rupp, Ivan and Amelia, Hays, Kansas; Adrianne (Stone) & Dan Hoefler, Abbigale and Madison, Columbus, Georgia; Rachel (Goetz) & Ty Wilson, Madelyn, Ava, and Emmett, Cottonwood Falls, Kansas.

He is survived by his mother and step-father, Barbara & Bob Parks and siblings, Cindy (Bill) Gerstmyer, Salisbury, Maryland; Becky Richmond, Shawnee Kansas; Jeff (Lynn) Stone, Greendale, Wisconsin; and Laurie (Loren) Kallenbach, Lawrence, Kansas. He is also survived by his father’s long-time companion, Sylvia Stevens, Leavenworth, Kansas.

Greg is survived by his in-laws, Larry & Florence Goetz, Hays, Kansas; Cheryl & Shelton Renz, Hays, Kansas; Keith & Judy Goetz, Hutchinson, Kansas; and Brenda & Bill Pfizenmaier, Ottawa, Kansas. Greg enjoyed being an uncle to 21 nieces and nephews and was already a “great uncle” to 10.

Greg was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Stone and brothers-in-law, Brad Richmond and Randy Goetz.

A wake service and rosary will be held at 6:30 pm, Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ottawa, Kansas. There will be dessert and drinks following the service in the parish hall.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, October 19, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The funeral dinner will follow immediately in the parish hall.

Burial will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 20, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Hays, Kansas.

The family requests NO flowers and asks that all food donations be coordinated with Sacred Heart Church (785-242-2174) to be used for the funeral dinner. Jan Kay Scott

Jan Kay Scott, 71, of Russell, KS passed away on October 13, 2018 in Wichita, KS.

Survived by her 3 children; Angie, Vinton, and Rebecca; brother, Ray Gilmore; sister Glenda Green; 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and many beloved foster children.

Mary Louise Spatz

Mary Louise Spatz, age 76, of Goodland passed away Monday, October 15, 2018 at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver.

Mary was born January 25, 1942 to Howard and Julesie (Stewart) Olson in Lincoln, Nebraska. She grew up and went to high school and college in Lincoln. On May 11, 1962 she married Gary L. Spatz in Lincoln. They moved to Goodland in 1968.

Mary worked as a school cook for many years. She was a member of the Emmanual Lutheran Church of Goodland. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing, reading and most of all her family.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Gary; parents and grandparents.

She is survived by her daughter Christi (Kristi) Conner of Green Mountain Falls, CO; son, Steve (Mindy) Spatz of McCook, NE; daughter, Rebecca Schneider of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, Christopher DeGraffenreid; Teagan, Brandon, Steven and Justin Spatz; Brooke and Katelyn Schneider; great grandchildren, Dixie, Oakley, Annabelle, Savannah, Alexis and Kian; brothers, Dave (Mary) Olson of AZ and Don (Peg) Olson of Lincoln, NE.

Ray Dean Dancer

Ray Dean Dancer, 60, of Rose Hill, Kansas, formerly of Oakley, Hill City and Hoxie, Kansas passed away on Monday, October 15, 2018 at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover, Kansas. He was born in Hoxie, Kansas to Raymond Edward and Mary Evelyn (Hansen) Dancer. Ray Dean attended Hoxie Grade and High School until he transferred to the Beamgard Learning Center in Atwood, Kansas graduating with a Certificate of Education.

Ray Dean became the first person to be served by Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas (DSNWK) in Oakley, Kansas. Ray Dean became a very active member of the Oakley community and was able to live independently with the support of DSNWK. While in Oakley, he had five different jobs, cleaning at Gridley Apartments, 1st Travel Inn, shredding at the DSNWK office in Oakley, cleaning at the DSNWK office in Colby. Ray Dean also delivered the County Advocate. In 2008, he moved to Hill City living independently with support from DSNWK. Here he made new friends and had a reacquaintance of old friends. Ray Dean was a hard and very willing worker. He participated on many work crews and in-house janitorial jobs. He thought of the Kobler Center as his true home. He attended the United Methodist Church wherever he lived. He had the opportunity to attend a Christian Camp which he really enjoyed.

Ray Dean enjoyed being out in the communities where he lived spending time with other individuals served by DSNWK and community members. He had a three-wheeled bike which allowed him the freedom of getting around the community and doing things he enjoyed. Ray Dean loved new adventures and trying new things whenever possible. He liked to bowl, play billiards and go swimming. If one could not find Ray Dean, it was almost a guarantee he would be at the basketball court. He was a true “Basketball Junkie”. Ray Dean’s sister Rose Mary was a very important person in his life. He loved her dearly. Ray Dean was always willing to buy things for Rose Mary and enjoyed taking her out to eat. He was kind and gentle with her.

In May of 2017, Ray Dean experienced a health crisis and was no longer able to live independently in his home in Hill City. He moved to Hays to be closer to the medical help he needed. More recently, he moved to Rose Hill, Kansas where he resided at the time of his death.

Ray Dean is survived by his sister, Rose Mary Dancer of Russell, Kansas, his Uncles Ralph Hansen of, Colby, Kansas, Dwain Hansen of Haxton, Colorado, Kenneth Hansen of Holyoke, Colorado, Donald Hansen of Lamar Nebraska; his aunt, Caroine (Hansen) Guiry of Denver, Colorado, and many other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mary Evelyn Dancer; uncles, Roscoe Hansen and infant uncle, Ronald Hansen; and his Grandparents Ernest and Eunice Hansen who lived in Otis, Colorado where Ray Dean spent a lot time during his youth and early adulthood, and his Dancer Grandparents.

A funeral service is planned for Thursday, October 18, 2018, 2:00 P.M. at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home in Hoxie. Pastor Jake Shadel will preside. Interment will follow in the Hoxie City Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the Funeral Home, Thursday August 18, 2018. Ray Dean Dancer was a gentle spirt with a heart filled with kindness and a happy spirit. He was hard working and enjoyed his life. Do not grieve for him but rather think of him as the person with a happy and gentle spirit who has gone home to be with his Lord and Savior and is smiling down on you.

Chevelle Anne (Terry) Bode

Chevelle Anne (Terry) Bode passed away October 15, 2018 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 28. She was born on October 2, 1990 to Darin and Suzette (Gestner) Terry in Wichita. Chevelle married Aron Bode and later divorced. They were blessed with two children: Alek and Aspen.

Chevelle was a painter and was good at working with her hands. She was a caring and loving person who loved animals, hunting and fishing, and collecting rocks, but her greatest loves were her kids and family.

Chevelle is survived by her mother Suzette Terry and companion Greg Veverka of Plainville; father Darin Terry and wife Kate of Woodston; son Alek Bode of Cotopaxi, CO; daughter Aspen Bode of Cotopaxi, CO; paternal grandparents Patricia and Rick Griffin of Woodston; brothers Matthew Terry and wife Chelsye of Plainville and Dusty Terry and wife Kayla Ostrom of Natoma; sister Christina Werner and husband Justin of Plainville; step-sisters Kimberly Blunt of Hill City and Kelly Stephens of Hill City; and nieces and nephews Marcella Plante and Raylee Terry.

She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Gilbert and Jeanette Gestner.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 20, 2018, at 10:30 A.M. at the Church of the Nazarene in Plainville. Visitation will be Friday 2:00-8:00 P.M. with the family receiving friends 6:00-8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Walter Adolph Rippe

Walter Adolph Rippe, died Wed., Oct. 17, 2018, in Atwood, Kansas. He was born Nov. 18., 1924.

Janice Ann Hooker

Longtime Kanorado, Kansas, resident Janice Ann Hooker, 78, passed away at her home in Kanorado on Tuesday, October 16, 2018.

Janice was born December 9, 1939 in the family sod house north of Ruleton to Wilbur and Vena (Light) Tubbs. She graduated from Sherman County High School in 1957. She then went on and attended 1 year at the Fort Hays State University in the Nursing program.

On May 31, 1959, Janice married Truman Leon Hooker at the Kanorado United Methodist Church.
Janice worked as a DOT Inspector for the State of Kansas for many years. She was a member of the Kanorado United Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband T. Leon Hooker, 3 brothers Frank, Lee and Cork Tubbs, and one sister Alice Duell.

She is survived by her children Scott Hooker (Karen Sue Gottshall) of Kanorado, KS, Brenda Hooker of Kanorado, KS and Karen (Dan) Duell of Goodland. She is also survived by four grandchildren Cody Hooker, Truman Hooker, Jessi Duell and Caleb Duell.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 10:00 AM MT at the Kanorado United Methodist Church in Kanorado, with Pastors Gordon Pettibone and Josh Simmons officiating. Inurnment will be held privately in the Kanorado Cemetery.

J. Douglas ‘Doug’ Fellers

J. Douglas “Doug” Fellers, age 79, of Hays, died Sunday, October 14, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays.

He was born November 11, 1938 in Hays, Kansas to Edmond E. and Florence (Tichenor) Fellers. He married Pam (Henderson) Allen on April 21, 1984 in Hays.

Doug was a partner in the family owned Higher View Dairy where he was a respected breeder and exhibitor of Registered Holsteins. He bred and developed the first Excellent 95-5E cow of the breed and exhibited cattle in many State, Regional and National exhibitions.

He won many Grand Championships at the Kansas State Fair and Dallas Fort Worth Livestock Show. He was also the recipient of a Reserve All American Award. He was an astute dairy judge in the United States, Mexico, and South America. He used his expertise to assist many breeders in the preparation of showing their cattle even if it made the competitions cattle beat one of his own.

After dispersing his herd he went to work for the Holstein Association as a classifier and travelled the United States evaluating cattle to help improve breeding on farms.

He was an active member of the National and State Holstein Association, serving as the state organization as its President. He had an amazing creative side that led to building bird houses without plans and he created a true type model Holstein that he had cast from his model and then painted for dairymen with the marking of their prized animals. He also created 13 with the map of the world on both sides to be used as Select Sires awards at one of their international award ceremonies.

Survivors include his wife, Pam, of the home; his mother, Florence Fellers; four sons, Jay Fellers and wife Sharla; Jeff Fellers and wife Leslie; Jason Fellers and wife Lucia; Josh Fellers; one daughter, Jenny Morgan and husband David, one step-son, David Allen; one step-daughter, Julie Allen; one brother, Ed Fellers and wife Betsy; one sister, Beth Britton, 14 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; one sister, Barbara Young; and one infant sister, Virginia Lee Fellers.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial to the Alzheimer’s Association of Central and Western Kansas in care of the mortuary.
