Dighton- Mandie Jean Bennett, 22, died on Monday, October 8, 2018 at McPherson. She was born on November 3, 1995 at Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mandie moved to Dighton when she was in the 5th grade. She lived with the Moomaw family in Dighton and graduated from Dighton High School with the Class of 2014. While in high school she was involved in basketball, volleyball, cross Country, band & was a cheerleader. She was elected to the National Honor Society. She then attended Kansas State University majoring in Biology to become a Nurse and was in the KSU Marching Band. Mandie was a lifeguard for 2 summers in Dighton. In 2017 she moved back to Dighton and was a Nurse’s Aide at Lane County Hispital. She recently moved to Lindsborg and was working as a Nurse’s Aide at McPherson Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed art, music and fishing.

She is survived by her Dighton Family- Mitch, Terry, Sam & Zeke Moomaw and all the Moomaw & Bush Families, Her Best Friend- Kayla Borell & the Dighton Community that supported her. She is also survived by her Mother- Lori Kobes of Manhattan, 2 Sisters- Meagan King of Lincoln, Nebraska & Yasmin Alsbaibani of Manhattan & 2 Brothers- Darren Price of Lincoln, Nebraska & Justin McKnight of Olathe.

Royce F. Cook of Oberlin, Kansas passed away at the Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems in Beloit, Kansas on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the age of 94. Royce was born to Floyd E. and Murttis I. (Farr) Cook on August 21, 1924, in rural Logan County Kansas. He grew up in Logan and Scott Counties and graduated from Scott City High School with the class of 1942. On the 27th of June 1944, Royce entered the United States Marine Corps. His special military qualification was rifleman. Royce served in the Asiatic-Pacific Area and participated in actions against the enemy on Iwo Jima, where he was wounded. On September 29th of 1945, Royce was honorably discharged from the Casual Company, Marine Detachment, U.S. Naval-Retraining Command and the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He was proud to serve his country.

On June 20th, 1947, Royce Cook married Lola M. Derley at the Scott County Courthouse over their noon hour. This marriage lasted seventy-one years. Lola would tell you it was a great seventy-one-year partnership and a good marriage. Royce and Lola had two sons, Lee Royce and Verl Ray and a daughter, Sharon. Royce and Lola lived in Scott City until 1950 when they moved to Gove County. In Gove County, they lived in the ranch house by the Pyramids. In 1952, they moved to Decatur County where Royce lived the rest of his life and Lola continues to live.

Royce was a farmer and rancher. He loved cattle and thoroughly enjoyed raising and taking care of them. He liked working at the Sale Barns in Oberlin, Atwood, and Quinter. He was the kind of person who was always willing to help a neighbor. He worked hard, but he enjoyed a little coon and coyote hunting. Another passion of Royce’s was attending auctions. He was always bringing home “treasurers” that he was sure he would use or need one day. Most of all, he loved his family.

Royce is survived by his wife Lola of Oberlin, Kansas; daughter, Sharon Zimmerman and Lyle of Grinnell, Kansas; brother, Dale R. Cook and Jeanne of North Platte, Nebraska; sister, Joanne C. Black and Robert of Arizona; grandchildren, Daniel Weis and Kilee Zeman, David Weis, Lance Weis and Katie, Matthew Weis and Meghan, Kayla Zimmerman, Rebecca Cook, Janel Cook; and great-grandchildren, Walter Weis, Sawyer Weis, Anistynn Zeman, Oliver Weis, Emersynn Weis, and Eliot Weis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Murttis Cook; sons, Lee Royce and Verl Ray; and brother, Derald E. Cook.

A Funeral Service is planned for Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at the Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin, Kansas, with Pastor Gordon Pettibone presiding. Interment will follow the service at the Oberlin Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Oberlin American Legion #70, Fort Wallace Calvary Tribute, and the United States Marine Corp Honor Guard. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at Pauls Funeral Home from 9:00 A.M. until 7:30 P.M. and Wednesday, October 17, 2018, from 9:30 A.M. until service time. Royce loved his family, worked hard, helped his neighbors, and served his country with honor.

Judy M. Manning, 66, passed away October 12, 2018, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS. She was born January 23, 1952 in Ellinwood, to Louis and Elizabeth (Copenhaver) Pivonka. She married Michael Manning on April 5, 1975, in Ellinwood. He survives.

Coming from Ellinwood in 1975, Judy was the Deputy City Clerk for the City of Great Bend for 22 years. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Parrish at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, where she was a member of the Altar Society and previously served as a Eucharistic Minister. She held memberships in P.E.O, Chapter IV, the Book Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and F.C.A. She loved quilting, crafting, flower gardening, collecting dishes and especially enjoyed time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include, husband, Mike Manning of the home; two daughters, Lexie Ainley and husband Scott of Shawnee and Kinzie Behrends and husband Brett of Great Bend; one brother, Louie Pivonka and wife Joni of Ellinwood; one sister, Lois Maickel of Lafayette, Indiana, and six grandchildren, Aiden Ainley, Austin Ainley, Ashlyn Ainley, Collyns Ainley, Breckin Behrends and Laykin Behrends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Berens and four brothers-in-laws, Joe Berens, Roger Maickel, John Manning and Bill Murray.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, with an Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein presiding. Charlotte Jacobs, age 91 of Hays, Kansas Passed away Friday, October 12, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society, Hays. She was born April 2, 1927 in Victoria, Kansas to Mark and Sophia (Nowak) Weigel. She married Fred T. Jacobs in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays on November 12, 1945. He preceded her in death on February 4, 2009 after 63 years of marriage.

She was in the retail clothing business for 15 years. After retirement she kept books for B & F Oil Company which was a family owned business. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Daughters of Isabella #254 and the VFW Auxiliary 9076 all of Hays.

Charlotte is survived by a son, Bob Jacobs and wife Nancy of Hays; two daughters, Dee Hand and husband Bill of Hays and Debbie Riedel and husband Gerald of WaKeeney; five grandchildren, Kory and Matt Jacobs, Dustin Hand and life partner Katie Wendell, Taylor and Colton Riedel; two great grandchildren, Jacob and Presley Hand; three brothers, Mark, Duane and Dennis Weigel and three sisters, Donna Meyers, Carrie Brungardt and Cheryl Engel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, Marvin as an infant, Don, Ken, Lee, Darrell and Bob Weigel and two sisters, Dolores Meis and JoAnn Weigel.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Fr. Fred Gatschet will officiate. Burial will follow services in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Wm. A. Garretson Jr., was born on June 29, 1927, in Long Beach, California, to Wm. A. Garretson and Bessie (John) Garretson. The family resided there for several years, moving back to Smith County, Kansas, in 1933, to a farm in Pleasant Township.

By the time Bill was ready to begin school, he was already milking cows and doing chores. Bill and his sisters, Betty and Harriett, walked the mile to Jacksonburg School. A few years later, the family moved to their permanent home, closer to school, which meant milking and chores had to be done before they walked the quarter mile to school!

By the time Bill was in high school, the war was raging, Bill quit high school during the second semester of his junior year to join the Navy. He took basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and was sent from there to Seattle, where he boarded the USS Maryland, destination unknown, as they traveled down the coast, the announcement was made that Japan had surrendered. The mission continued on, with a change of ships in Hawaii, to Okinawa. Bill was discharged in 1946 and returned to Smith Center High School, where he finished his education, graduating with the class of 1947.

Bill was recalled to service in 1951, during the Korean War, and was stationed at Treasure Island, near San Francisco, California. He was honorably discharged in November of 1954.

Patriotism was of great importance to Bill, and his time in the U.S. Navy was a highlight of his life. He loved to visit with other veterans about their experiences, and when on his many travels, was able to renew acquaintance with several of his former Navy buddies. Upon retirement from the farm, he was very active in the local American Legion chapter, marching as part of the honor guard in parades, and raising flags on Memorial Day.

On June 29, 1952, while home on leave, Bill married his sweetheart, Norma Patman, at the Presbyterian Church in Smith Center. They became active members there, and he was ordained as an elder on December 29, 1957.

The young couple farmed north of Bellaire until 1959, when they bought a farm and moved to the Reamsville area. The Reamsville Church, where Bill had attended as a youngster, then became their church home for the next 59 years.

Bill loved adventure and new experiences, and he and Norma enjoyed extensive travels throughout the United States and much of Canada. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and riding his motorcycle.

Bill both came from, and became head of, a large family, of whom he was extremely proud.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Norma; his children: James and wife, Donna (Garretson), Jenifer and husband, Jerald (Ratliff), and Janice and husband, Eric (Churchwell); his ten grandchildren: Christina (Garretson) and husband Ryan Sturdy; Michael and wife Jodi Garretson, David and wife Athena Garretson; Erin (Ratliff) and husband Mark Ludvicek, Colin and wife Kerri Ratliff, Lindsay (Ratliff) and husband Joel Trindad; Cameron Ratliff, Vance Churchwell, Whitney Churchwell, and Heath Churchwell, along with eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving Bill are his sisters: Margaret Garretson, Virginia McBath, Marcia and husband LeRoy Heinrich, and sister-in-law, Carole Garretson; and his brothers: Stan and wife Ellen, and Brent, and brother-in-law Jim Leising, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Proceeding Bill in death were his daughter, Gale Denise; his parents, Bill
and Bessie Garretson; his sisters, Beay and husband Ralph Webster, Harriett and husband Vern Rounsley, Shirley Williss, and Linda Leising; and his brother-in-law Bill McBath, and brothers, Roger and wife Louise, and James Frederick (Fritz).

He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Tauscher Marqueling, was born in Colby, KS on January 20, 1944 to Lee and Stella (Seibel) Tauscher. She went peacefully to her heavenly home with loving family by her side at Hays Medical Center on October 12, 2018 at the age of 74.

Betty’s family lived on a farm south of Oakley. She attended Oakley schools, graduating from Oakley High School in 1962. Betty married Bill Marqueling on August 28, 1963, and moved to his farm near Park, Kansas. Betty worked full time at Gove County Medical Center, taking time off to work side by side helping her husband on the farm.

After retiring from the hospital and Bill passing away in 2003, Betty moved to Hays, Kansas and made her home there until her death. Betty and her sister, Erma, took many bus trips throughout recent years, visiting most of the states and attending the Rose Parade. They also took one cruise to the Caribbean with their cousins.

Betty is survived by her sister Erma Lee Gee of Oakley; Nephews Michael L Gee (Tami) of Oakley and Terry W Gee (Linda) of Wichita; great-nephew Scott Gee (Dilia) of Oakley; great-niece MacKenna Gee of Wichita; great-great nephews Skyler and James Gee of Oakley; a special friend Elmer Steinle of Russell; and special nephew-in-law Dale Goetz (Dena) and their families of Park. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill; a nephew, Pat Gee; and a brother-in-law, James Gee. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Park, Kansas.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening, from 5 to 7, at the funeral home in Quinter.

Lorraine Frances Brown Morgan, 87, died Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. She was born October 30, 1930 in Jetmore, Kansas the daughter of John G. & Veronica Jacobs.

Lorraine has been a lifetime resident of western Kansas and longtime resident of Garden City. A homemaker, Lorraine also worked as a clerk for various convenience stores as well as a housekeeper. In July of 1947, she married Edgar A. Brown in Carrolton, Missouri. Lorraine enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening, and watching TV.

Survivors include 2 sons Ted Brown of Rockingham, NC and Wayne Brown of Hillsboro, Ks; 5 daughters Mary Underwood of Jacksonville, Florida, Donna Morgan of Dighton, Ks, Linda Brewer of Garden City, Ks, Carol Brown of Wichita, Ks, & Patricia Benford of Garden City, Ks; and numerous Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. Lorraine is preceded in death by her children;Robert Richard “Buck” Brown, Billy Ray Brown, Shelia Jane Brown, & john Anthony Brown by her parents; 3 brothers Alvin Jacobs, Wayne Jacobs, & Bob Jacobs; and a sister Doris Schreibvogel.

ATHOL – Patricia Marie Gerstenkorn, age 72, passed away Thursday October 11, 2018 at the Good Samaritan hospital in Kearney, NE. She was born the daughter on August 10, 1946 in Smith Center to Lester & Mildred (Hermans) Grauerholz.

She is survived by her daughter Andra (Jeff) Walters of Evergreen, CO; a son Mitch (Sarah) Gertsenkorn of Morrison, CO; her mother Mildred Grauerholz of Smith Center; a brother James (Diane) Grauerholz of Wichita, KS; 2 grandchildren and 3 Step Grandchildren.

Shirley K. Adams, 74, Hays, died Friday, October 12, 2018 at the Willow House in Hays.

She was born September 18, 1944 in Warrensburg, Missouri, the daughter of Gomer and Nadine (Haverland) Williams. She was a real estate broker and owner/operator of Bel Air Realty for 30 years. On July 14, 1974 she was united in marriage to Jack R. Adams, a retired Kansas Highway Patrolman, in McPherson, Kansas. They celebrated over 36 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on April 18, 2011. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Hays Board of Realtors, and was on the CASA of the High Plains Board of Directors. She loved reading books, driving her cars, and her cats and dog Cherokee.

Survivors include a son; Tony Adams and his two sons Dakota and Colton, all of Hays, a brother; David Williams and husband Gary Abel of Lenexa, a step-daughter; Debbie Adams of El Dorado, a step-son; Dennis Adams of Yucca Valley, California, a sister-in-law; Donna Hunt of Lenexa, fifteen step-grandchildren, eighteen step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack, an infant brother Gerald, and her beloved dog Cherokee.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, October 19, 2018 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, with Rev. Michael Rose officiating, and Shirley has requested casual attire. Burial will be at 3:00 pm on Friday in the McPherson Cemetery in McPherson, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 9:00 am until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
