Ruby Elizabeth Bixenman

Ruby Elizabeth Bixenman, 90, of Grainfield, died Saturday, September 29, 2018.

She was born January 1, 1928, on her grandparents’ farm north of Grainfield, in Sheridan County, KS, to Jay G. and Iva (Denning) Moore. Ruby graduated from Grainfield High School in 1946. After graduation she attended Wichita Business School and came back to Oakley and worked as a telephone operator at Southwestern Bell.

On May 25, 1949 she married Fred Bixenman and to this union five children were born. They enjoyed 69 years together with many blessings. Ruby was a homemaker and helped on the family farm. She helped with harvest and always had fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy when the men arrived for supper. Ruby enjoyed baking and trying out new recipes. Her specialty was cinnamon rolls and always an orange chiffon cake at Easter. She enjoyed and treasured her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society and the Grinnell V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Merle (Laverna) Moore, Roy (Hazel) Moore, Nila Jean Weigel and infant sister Katherine Moore.

She is survived by her husband, Fred, of Grainfield; children, Linda (Jerry Gross, friend) Bixenman, of Hays, Kenny (Colleen) Bixenman, of Colby, Mary Jane (Greg) Goetz, of Grinnell, Ron (Nancy) Bixenman, of Grainfield and Daryl (Judy) Bixenman, of Grainfield; sisters, Ilene Zimmerman and Rosa Lea (Joe) Spresser; grandchildren, Erica (Denton Stein, friend) Schmidt, Jessica (Aaron) Dempewolf, Jared (Sally) Bixenman, Jaydon Bixenman, Julian Bixenman, Nathan (Kacie) Goetz, Darren (Tori) Goetz, Eric (Jacqui McCleneghen, fiancée) Goetz, Christina (Greg) Peterson, Christopher Bixenman, Luke Bixenman, Natalie Bixenman and Andrew (Tristan) Bixenman, Bailey Bixenman, Brooke Bixenman, Melissa Bixenman, Mason Bixenman and nine great grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5-7:00 pm on Monday, Oct 1, 2018 at St, Paul’s Catholic Church, Angelus, KS with Vigil service at 7:00 pm. Conrad ‘Lee’ Weaver Jr.

Conrad “Lee” Weaver Jr., age 68, passed away at his home in Scott City, Kansas on Friday, September 28, 2018. He was born on June 3, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Conrad Lee and Phyllis Brandt Simmons Weaver. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 2006 moving from Baltimore, Maryland, he was a Maintenance Supervisor.

He was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City, Kansas and Arlington Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland and the NRA.

On August 1, 1980 he married Debra J. Brueggeman in Baltimore, Maryland. She survives.

Survivors Include his Wife – Debra Weaver of Scott City, Kansas, Step Son – Donivan McGreal of Baltimore, Maryland, One Son – Richard Weaver Noble of Brentwood, California, One Daughter – Rachael Weaver Noble of California, One Sister – Susan Harvard of Baltimore, Maryland and One Granddaughter – Genna Noble of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, One Son – Robert Weaver, One Daughter Phyllis Weaver and One Sister – Kathy Sahm.

Graveside Services will be held at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Warren Prochnow presiding.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Lee Weaver Memorial Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Betty L. Hines

Betty L. Hines, age 83, of Goodland, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the Goodland Regional Medical Center. Betty was born December 30, 1934 in Norton County, Kansas to Carl and Myrtle (Rowley) Talley.

Betty grew up in Goodland and graduated Goodland High School in 1953. She married Robert F. Hines in Raton, New Mexico on December 21, 1957. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Betty was a homemaker, enjoyed spending time with her family, embroidery, word puzzles, gardening, cooking and baking.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; brother, Bobby Lee Talley; sister, Shirley Bowen.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Barbara (LeRoy) Thomas of Goodland; grandsons, Nathan and Nick Thomas (Heather Kamla) and their dog Molly of Goodland; sister, Linda Goalden of McPherson, KS; nieces, Susan Scott, Jo Underhill and Carol Underhill; nephews, Bill Bowen, Mike Goalden and Brad Goalden.

Graveside service will be Monday, October 1, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. MT at the Goodland Cemetery, North Main Street in Goodland. Visitation will be Sunday, September 30, 2018 from 4 to 6 p.m. MT at Bateman Funeral Home, 211 East 11th Street in Goodland. Anita M. McCollum

Anita M. McCollum, age 65, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on December 31, 1954 in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Richard Alexander and Margaret Pearl Meis McCollum. A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, she worked for Wheatland Electric for 41 years before retiring in December of 2017.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Scott County Historical Society both of Scott City, Kansas and a member of the Relay For Life.

Survivors Include her Two Brothers Tom McCollum of Scott City, Kansas, John McCollum of Scott City, Kansas, Two Sisters Patricia & Robert Hoeme of Scott City, Kansas, Judy & Don Browning of Scott City, Kansas and Numerous Nieces & Nephews.

She was preceded in death by her Parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas with Pastor Steve Payne presiding.

Burial will be in the Scott County Cemetery.

Bernadine June Johnson

Goodland resident Bernadine June Johnson, 76, passed away Thursday, September 27th at Citizens Medical Center in Colby, Kansas.

Bernadine was born on October 18th, 1941 in Imperial, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Melvin Griess and Eleanor (Griess) Crabb. She was the oldest of seven children. As a child Bernadine lived in different towns because her father traveled to construct grain elevators.

On October 30th, 1957 she married Donald Colby. To this union four children were born. Bernadine then was common law married to Jim Bateman. To this union there were three children. On February 29th, 1980 in Burlington, Colorado, she married Arthur S. Johnson and to this union they adopted one son.

For much of her life Bernadine waited tables at the Sunflower Restaurant and the Boyington Inn. She also tended bar at the Moose Lodge. In later years she worked housekeeping and front desk at the Budget Inn in Colby before she retired.

Bernadine enjoyed watching the kids dirt track racing. She was very involved in 4-H until her health slowed her down. Her love for goats still lives on today. In the last couple of years she developed a love for Pembroke Welsh Corgis and her dog Miss Daisy Duke. Bernadine also had a love for cooking, quilting, and sewing.

Bernadine was preceded in death by her father Melvin Griess, step dad Ira McAfoos, husband Art Johnson, daughter Marleen Colby, brother Charles Griess, sisters Kathie Savauge and Kristine Ahrens.

Surviving family includes her mother Eleanor (James) Crabb of Wauneta, Nebraska, brothers Merle (Connie) Griess of Champion, Nebraska and Caroll McAfoos of Parks, Nebraska, sister Vanetta (Jody) Heitkotter of Hutchinson, Kansas. Children Ricky (Brenda) Colby of Bedford, Virginia, Barb Fromholtz of St. Francis, Kansas, Tom (Tammy) Colby of Kanorado, Kansas, Diane Mowry of Nickerson, Kansas, Linda (Roy) Feldt of Royse City, Texas, Tina Johnson of Leoti, Kansas, Michael (Melissa) Johnson of Goodland, Kansas, and fifteen grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services for Bernadine will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at 10:30 AM MT at the Goodland United Methodist Church in Goodland, KS with Pastor Gordon Pettibone officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 1, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM MT at the Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland.

Donna M. Kuhn, age 83 of Hays, KS formerly of Ellis, KS passed away, Thursday, September 27, 2018 at the Hays Medical Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Monday, October 1, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2018 from 4-6:00 P.M., with a Ellis Daughters of Isabella rosary service at 5:45 PM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine St., Hays, KS 67601. William Clayton ‘Bill’ Jones Sr.

William Clayton “Bill” Jones Sr., 71, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on September 24, 2018, at Via Christi Hospital at St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas.

He was born December 1, 1946, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Ernest Warren and Ula Jean (Shannon) Jones. Bill graduated in 1965 from Hoisington High School.

A longtime resident of Hoisington, Bill retired in 2011.

On May 17, 1969, he married Shirley L. Kisner in Hoisington, Kansas. She preceded him in death on February 25, 2012.

Survivors include; three children, Shannon E. Jones and wife Stephanie of Claflin, Becci L. Starkey and husband Jess of Hoisington, and Will C. Jones, Jr. and companion Jennifer of Great Bend; five grandchildren, Seth Jones, Sawyer Starkey, Jessica Starkey, Taylor Jones, and Madison Jones; and a great grandson, Aiden Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and an infant son, James D. Jones.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Monday, October 1, 2018, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Mike Joiner presiding. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call 1-5 p.m., with family to receive friends from 3-5 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home and 9 a.m. until service on Monday.

James F. ‘Jim’ Nieman

James F. “Jim” Nieman, 82, died Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at the Homestead Health & Rehabilitation Center in Garden City. He was born March 16, 1936 in Sheridan County, Kansas the son of Nicholas J. & Lucy A. (Broeckelman) Nieman.

Jim grew up with his family on a farm Northeast of Grinnell, Kansas. He attended grade school in Angelus, Ks and Grinnell, Ks. He then attended and graduated from high school in Grinnell.

Jim served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. After returning from the service, Jim attended and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Ft. Hays State University. Jim worked for GAB Claims from 1962 to 1974 in Hays, Ks and Garden City, Ks. He then worked for St. Paul Claims from 1974 to 1977, and for Farm Bureau Claims in Garden City from 1977 to 2000. Jim retired in 2000. He has lived in Garden City since 1963. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City; St. Mary Church Choir; Knights of Columbus; Farm Bureau; and was very active in Meals on Wheels. Jim enjoyed gardening and was an avid sports fan where he loved to play softball. He also loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

On September 24, 1966, he married Patricia L. Bergkamp in Garden City. She survives.

Other survivors include three children Scott & wife Lori Nieman of Garden City, Ks, John Nieman of Colorado Springs, Co, and Sandy Nieman of Colorado Springs, Co; four brothers Gerald Nieman of Golden, Co, Lawrence Nieman of Sioux Falls, SD, Kenneth Nieman of Garden City, Ks, & Raymond Nieman of Hays, Ks; a sister Jean Loder of Salina, Ks; and two Grandchildren Allison Nieman and Emmy Nieman.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Al Nieman and Paul Nieman; and two sisters Erma Lou Nieman and Alma Gillespie.

A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 28 also at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Charles Seiwert as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Kansas Army Nationa Guard Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.

The family suggests memorials given to St. Mary School in care of the funeral home.
