Dr. Troy Wayne Kerby

Dr. Troy Wayne Kerby, age 51, of Hays, Kansas passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2018 in Hays.

Arrangements are by Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Memorials are suggested to the Hays Med Foundation in Dr. Troy Kerby’s name for the benefit of the Hays Medical Center Imaging Department.

Gilbert Kent Selfridge

Gilbert Kent Selfridge, 64, died on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born on February 21, 1954 at Garden City the son of Gilbert Lee & Lila Ann (Dyer) Selfridge.

Kent was a 1972 graduate of Dighton High School and was a farmer until 1996 when he moved to Wakeeney and worked at a convenience store and monument company. In 1998 he moved back to Dighton to work for Jerry Sharp and later Adams Dirt Construction. In 2004 he moved to Hays and to Lacrosse in 2011 and back to Hays in 2014. He was a member of the Free Tomorrow Motorcycle Club for 34 years. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, cooking especially BBQ and being with his Grandchildren and Killer his dog.

He is survived by his Daughter- Tanya (Jared) Adamson of Salina, 3 Sons- William Selfridge of Hoisington, Patrick (Anne) Selfridge of Otis & Kerry (Brandy) Selfridge of Hutchinson, 2 Brothers- His twin Paul Selfridge of Sunnyside, Washington & Brian Selfridge of Dighton, 3 Sisters- Susan Daniels of Leavenworth, Shelley Selfridge of Dighton & Jill Obrock of Kingman, 13 Grandchildren & 1 Great-Granddaughter.

Funeral Service will be at 2:00 PM Monday at United Methodist Church in Dighton with Rev Berniece Ludlum officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Weldon M. Brooks

Weldon M. Brooks, son of Glen L. and Blanche (Garton) Brooks, was born October 10, 1922, in Clayton, Kansas, and passed away at his home at the Whispering Pines Assisted Living Center in Norton, Kansas, on September 15, 2018, at the age of 95.

Weldon grew up in the Clayton community and attended the local schools, graduating from the Clayton High School. On August 12, 1942, Weldon married the love of his life, Merrice Goodman, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Weldon served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 until 1945. Following his honorable discharge with the rank of Sergeant, they returned to Clayton where they farmed and raised livestock. Following their retirement, they moved into Norton and later to the assisted living facility.

Weldon was a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church where he held many positions including Trustee and Sunday School teacher, and he served as a 4-H leader for many years. He also served as a member of several boards including the Jennings and Clayton school boards, Norton County Commissioners, Co-op, Norton County Hospital, Andbe Home, FSA, and as a Director at The Bank. Weldon was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, Mason, Scottish Rite and the Shriners.

Weldon leaves his loving wife, Merrice Brooks, of Norton; two children, Bill (Gail) Brooks, Norton; Barbara (Don) Kelly, Lawrence, Kansas; one brother, Dale Brooks, Mason, Ohio; five grandchildren, Steve (Kelly) Brooks, Sammy (Todd) Strickler, Bart (Cheri) Brooks, Angie (Brent) Schniers, and Kara (Eric) Huffman; 15 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Weldon was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Bart Brooks, and two sisters, Reva Brooks and Nila Sheneman.

Alice Marie Wasinger

Alice Marie Wasinger, 90, of Hutchinson, died Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born July 26, 1928, in Victoria, Kansas, to John and Catherine (Schmidtberger) Rupp.

Alice worked for Southwestern Bell as a telephone operator and was a homemaker. She was an avid golfer, gardener, and wonderful German cook. Alice was a member of Church of the Holy Cross Altar Society and Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Alice enjoyed serenading her family on every holiday and birthday with her harmonica, and enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and making every grandchild feel extra special.

On August 28, 1951, she married Alfred ‘Al’ Wasinger. They shared 59 years of marriage before his death on December 12, 2010.

Alice is survived by: children, Cathey Donohue (Patrick) of Blue Springs, MO, Andy Wasinger (Karen) of Hutchinson, Al Wasinger (Terri) of Owasso, Oklahoma, Linda Childs (Marc), Tom Wasinger (Samantha), all of Wichita; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; first infant granddaughter, Tara Donohue; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Parish Rosary will be 7 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2018, at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Church of the Holy Cross, with Father Aaron Spexarth and Father Michael Kerschen officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to Church of the Holy Cross, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

The family wishes to thank Alice’s caregivers: Jane, Maribeth, Nikki, Raeleen, and Renee, for their loving care given to their mom, which allowed Alice to remain in her home.

Fannie Elizabeth Lawrence

SMITH CENTER – Fannie Elizabeth Lawrence, 95, passed from her earthly life to the loving arms of her Savior on September 10, 2018. Fannie was born February 21, 1923 in Jefferson County, Kansas. She had lived in Smith Center since 1974.

Preceding her in death were her parents Frank and Mary Louise Lawrence, 3 baby brothers and sisters Mary Hughes, Ella Bigelow and Anna Voorhees. Fannie is survived by her brother Leslie Lawrence and brother-in-law Richard (Neil) Voorhees.

She attended rural schools in Jefferson County and lived and worked on the farm until 1960 when she was employed at the Shawnee County Infirmary at Topeka until its closure in 1974. During these years she became a licensed Practical Nurse and Licensed Nursing Home administrator. She later earned an associate degree in nursing home administration at Barton Community College.

She served as an L.P.N. and as an assistant nursing home administrator in Smith Center from 1974 until her retirement.

She was active in Smith Center community activities serving as treasurer for the Business and Professional Woman’s Club for 15 years and the Christian Singles Club. She was the Smith County chairman for the Arthritis Foundation for 15 years. She served many years on the board for the meals on wheels program. She also enjoyed many years singing in the North Central Christian Choir.

Fannie served as secretary for the local 60 Plus Club from 1995 until 2017 as well as leading a senior ladies exercise class from 1989 until 2016.

She was a member of the Faith Community Bible Church until it’s closing in 2008 and then attended the Grace Baptist Church.

Cecil Frederick Jones

Cecil Frederick Jones, age 95, died September 17, 2018. He was born on May 13, 1923 in Utica, Kansas to Alex Dale and Edna Delores (Wick) Jones.

Cecil attended schools in Utica, Lake City and Telluride Colorado, and graduated from Utica High School.

He joined the United States Marine Corps in Feb. 1943 and participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theatre including the Western Caroline Islands, Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, Leyte and the Northern Solomon Islands. He served until the end of WW II.

After the war he attended Kansas State University and later worked for a civil engineering firm in Colorado and Tennessee. He married Lauretta Virginia Brow in 1955 in Eckert, CO and shortly after returned to Utica. He was a rural mail carrier for 19 years, and was a soil conservation contractor building terraces, waterways and watershed dams in Kansas.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite, Lions Club, American Legion and VFW. He also served on the city council for many years.

Cecil is survived by his son Dale and wife Alina of Hesston, KS; grandson Dylan and wife Astrid of Newton, KS; grandson Logan Jones of Fort Collins, CO; great-grandchildren Diego, Juli and Olivia; a sister, Delores Huxman of Ransom, KS; a sister-in-law, Bobbie Jones of Eckert, CO; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, one sister, five brothers, and several brothers and sisters-in-law.

Memorial service is TENTATIVELY set for October 6, 2018 at Utica United Methodist Church with full military honors at burial in the Utica Cemetery. PLEASE CHECK HERE FOR CONFIRMED SERVICE TIMES AND DATE. THE ABOVE DATE IS NOT CONFIRMED YET.

Sharyn R. Dowdell

Sharyn R. Dowdell, 71, passed away September 17, 2018.

She was born March 14, 1947 to Alonzo Gillian and Lois Ruth (Moman) Alexander II. She married Frank Dowdell, December 23, 1966.

Survivors include sons, David Dowdell, and Lateef Dowdell and wife Carrie both of Nicodemus; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Gil Alexander.

Sharon K. Offutt, of Sugar Land, Texas, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2018.

Graveside service will be Friday, September 21, 2018, at 10:00 A.M. at the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

Reata Pinkerton Ward

Reata Pinkerton Ward, a young bright beacon of light, passed on September 17, 2018. She was 17.

Loved and inspired by all, she came in to her own at an early age. She helped raise the highest grossing bull within the Bull Riding Category at the National Finals Rodeo in 2010. Throughout her life she continued to love animals. May her free spirit, hard work and tenacity be an inspiration to us all. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

Reata was preceded in death by her grandfather, Bud Ward and Cousin Laramie Farris

She is survived by her parents: Jaylene Pinkerton and Charles Nolind Ward; siblings, Charles Ward, Lacey Ward, Sage Tremblay and Zane Ward; her beloved dog, Daisy and grandparents, John and Susie Pinkerton and Naomi Ward.

Mitchell ‘Mitch’ Lee Curtin

Mitchell “Mitch” Lee Curtin, 53, Atwood, Kansas passed away September 18, 2018 at his home. Mitch was born February 23, 1965 and grew up on a farm as the son of Larry and Joann (Sunley) Curtin.

Growing up on a family farm south of Atwood, Mitch learned to farm, ride horses, and raise cattle at a young age. He attended school in Atwood where he graduated in 1983. Mitch went on to Goodland Vo-Tech mechanic school and applied his diesel mechanic skills to harvest crews and as a John Deere mechanic. In 1992, Mitch returned to the family farm to once again fulfill his love of raising crops and caring for the land until his death. He also enjoyed hunting and was very proud of his black lab, Harley.

On March 23, 1994, a daughter, Alexia Lea, was born to Mitch Curtin and Sherri VanHorn.

On February 23, 2008, he married Cindy Skolout in Kauai, Hawaii. After a short stay in Hawaii, they returned to Atwood.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Cindy, mother, JoAnn Curtin of Atwood, KS, daughter, Alexia and husband Christian Hadley of St. Francis, KS, one brother, Craig “CJ” Curtin of Arvada, Colorado; three sisters, Marla and husband Dennis Delaney of Wildwood, MO, Lisa and husband Charles Keller of Albert, KS, Julie and husband David Tuttle of Overland Park, KS, step-daughter, Amber Barnett, step-son, Dustin Barnett and grandchildren Odin, and Dreyken Hadley, step-grandson Sage Barnett, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents William and Bernice Curtin, Paul and Hazel Sunley, and niece, Bridget Delaney.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 21, 2018 at The Skyline Ballroom, East Hill Dr, Atwood, KS. A private family burial will take place later at Chardon Cemetery.

Thea L. Boeckner, 63, Hays, died Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.
