Melody Lynn Morgan

Melody Lynn Morgan, 67, passed away on September 1, 2018 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. She was born on December 9, 1950 in Hays, Kansas the daughter of Don and Mary (Fuller) Ellis.

She was a homemaker. She married Frank Ervin Morgan on Saturday, August 8th, 1970, in Ogallah, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 21, 2016.

Survivors include three sons, Scott Morgan, Phillip Morgan, and Walter Morgan all of Ness City; two sisters, Mary Kay Kauffman – Garden City; Leah Crowley – Stockton; and three grandchildren, Craig, Mia, and Colten Morgan; a very special niece that was like a daughter to her, Patty Barfield – Alton and three very special great nieces, Saralyn, Kimber, and Skylar, that called her grandma.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; two brothers, Donald and Kenneth Ellis, and a sister Barbara Hoffman.

Funeral service and inurnment will be on Friday, September 14, 2018, 11:00 A.M., at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Veterans Memorial and Park, Ness City or the Melody Morgan Funeral Fund.

Harry Baker

SMITH CENTER – Harry Baker, age 73, passed away on Tuesday September 18, 2018 at the Smith Center Health & Rehab Center in Smith Center, KS.

He was a drywall mason.

Regina Eileen (Carver) Ostmeyer

Regina Eileen (Carver) Ostmeyer, 96, of Grinnell, died Tuesday, September 18, 2018 in Quinter, Kansas.

Regina was born October 18, 1921 on the farm south of Campus, to Harleigh Dean and Ruth (Ringwalt) Carver. At the age of 9, she moved with her family to Oakley and was a 1939 graduate of Oakley High School. On November 25, 1941, she married W. B. Ostmeyer at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Angelus Kansas. To this union eight children were born.

Regina was a longtime nursery aide at Gove County Medical Center where she truly enjoyed taking care of the newborns and their mothers. In 2013, Regina moved to her independent living apartment in Quinter where she learned to love playing pitch with her many new friends at Long Term Care. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Grinnell, St. Mary’s Altar Society, the VFW Auxiliary, and her Tuesday afternoon bridge club. Regina enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing bridge, and knitting afghans for all her children and grandchildren. Her greatest love was her family, especially all her beautiful grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Regina was preceded in death by her husband; son Steve Ostmeyer; granddaughter Christina Ostmeyer; 5 brothers and 5 sisters.

She is survived by her children, Judy (Lawrence) Nieman, Colleen (Randy) Seibel, Audrey Schwarz, Stan (Patrice) Ostmeyer, Sandii Ostmeyer, Mimi (Kevin) Tubbs, Ruthmary (Verl) Muir and Lisa (Doug Bixenman; sister Barbara Franzen; brother Larry Carver, 33 grandchildren, 77 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2018, at the Immaculate Conception Parish Hall, Grinnell, KS, with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Grinnell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Louis Aguilar

Louis Aguilar, age 64, of Goodland passed away Friday, September 14, 2018 at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Louis was born November 22, 1953 to Manuel and Erlinda (Vasquez) Aguilar in Del Rio, Texas.

Louis grew up in Mexico, Texas and Kansas and came to Goodland in 1969. He was married to Bertha Hurst for 40 years. He was a self-employed master of all trades including roofing, trucking, painting and tree trimming. He was a member of the Promise Land Baptist Church. Louis enjoyed attending church, playing guitar, listening to music, visiting family, watching cowboy movies and Walker Texas Ranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John Aguilar and a son Espiririon “Speedy” Aguilar.

Louis is survived by his wife Bertha; sons: Louis Jr. (Holly) Aguilar of Overbrook, KS; and Isreal (Taylor) Aguilar of Lawrence, KS; daughters: Tina (Ken) Webel of Shawnee, KS; and Rebecca (Jesse) Pitchford of Derby, KS; daughters-in-law Haylee (Mark) Wilder of Calhan, CO; and Kathleen (Raynard) Skeet of Farmington, New Mexico; sisters: Millie Perez of Gering, NE; and Alicia Aguilar of Kansas City, MO; brothers: Felix Aguilar of Eufala, OK; and Tony Aguilar of Denver, CO; 27 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 2 p.m. MT at Bateman Funeral Home, 211 East 11th Street in Goodland. Marvel Valerie McDonald

Marvel Valerie McDonald, 78, of Bison (formerly of WaKeeney) passed away on September 17, 2018 at Locust Gove Village in LaCrosse, KS. She was born the daughter of Roy and Vera (Michel) Albin in Quinter, KS, on January 25, 1940. She was a 1958 graduate of Quinter High School.

On July 4, 1959, Marvel was united in marriage to Merlyn McDonald. They later divorced. She continued her education attending Cloud Community College and Fort Hays State University to pursue nursing. Marvel was truly dedicated to nursing, having worked as a Certified Nurse’s Aide (CNA), becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and finally a Registered Nurse (RN). She was a long time resident of WaKeeney, working as a dispatcher and nurse for the Boeve Ambulance Service. She worked as an RN in WaKeeney, KS, Longmont, CO and Hays, KS until her retirement in early 2000.

Marvel worked mostly evening shifts so that she could attend her children’s school events as they grew up. She loved sports and cheering the team on. She had a love for the Rocky Mountains and visiting Estes Park, CO each summer with her children. She enjoyed working in her yard, planting and adding to her flower gardens. She loved animals, particularly her dogs and cats. She was tough lady, proving most wrong when she was told it couldn’t be done. Marvel’s heart was made of gold, helping many in need. She was a resident of Bison, KS in her retirement years until moving to Locust Grove Village. Working the many night shifts that she did as a nurse, she was a night owl keeping the night personnel at Locust Grove Company.

Marvel is survived by her children, Stan L. McDonald, Morland, KS, Bryan K. McDonald and his wife Tammy of Raymore, MO, Brenda K. Hoopingarner and her husband Lance of Otis, KS, Scot L. McDonald of Colby, KS; grandchildren: Michael McDonald and wife Julie, Tyler McDonald, Shane McDonald, Shawn McDonald, Landon Hoopingarner, Seth Hoopingarner, Jake Hoopingarner, Megan (McDonald) Janousek, Amber (McDonald) Risewick, and Wyatt McDonald; great grandchildren: Kendall McDonald, Jordyn McDonald, Brooklyn McDonald, Tamara McDonald, Teddy Janousek, and Sammy Janousek.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Vera Albin; step-father, Glen Albin; sister, Francis Deines and sister, Betty Jacobs and half-brother Rex Albin.

A celebration of Marvel’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney, KS. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Collyer, KS.

There will be a visitation and viewing from noon to service time on Thursday at the funeral home.

Sharyn R. Dowdell

Sharyn R. Dowdell, 71, passed away September 17, 2018.

She was born March 14, 1947 to Alonzo Gillian and Lois Ruth (Moman) Alexander II. She married Frank Dowdell, December 23, 1966. Survivors include sons, David Dowdell, and Lateef Dowdell and wife Carrie both of Nicodemus; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Gil Alexander.

Mildred Irene (Glynn) Ehrlich

Mildred Irene (Glynn) Ehrlich, 99, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, September 17, 2018, at Main Street Manor in Russell.

Mildred was born September 8, 1919 in Hoisington, Kansas. She was one of seven children born to Thomas and Mary (Fitts) Glynn. She grew up in Hoisington and graduated from Hoisington High School.

Mildred met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Rolland A. Ehrlich on April 10, 1938 in the Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Kansas. They made their home in Russell County on Rolland’s family farm. This union was blessed with four children; Donald, Karen, Larry and Barbara. Rolland preceded her in death on February 19, 2012

Mildred was a devoted wife and homemaker for her husband and children. She was very active in the day to day operations of the family farm and raising her children. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church. She also belonged to the Mayflower Society. She was a creative person who enjoyed making clothes for her children and grandchildren, making crafts and doing pencil portrait drawings. Her main joy in life was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mildred’s surviving family include her daughters, Karen Witt (Cecil) of Russell, Kansas and Barbara Edwards (Tim) of Olathe, Kansas; son, Larry G. Ehrlich of Westwood Hills, Kansas; brother, Bob Glynn of Hoisington, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Mark, Kristin, Jennifer, Tracy, Stephanie, Bruce and Amy, ten great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husband Rolland; son Donald Ehrlich; brothers, Jack Glynn and Tommy Glynn; sisters, Virginia Cole , Dorothy Degner and Mary Little; granddaughter Lori Ann Caylor; son-in-law Melvin Caylor and step grandson Cecil Witt, Jr.

Celebration of Mildred’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, September 20, 2018 at the St. John Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Memorial has been established with St. John Lutheran Church. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Forrest Harry Button

Forrest Harry Button, 96, died Monday, September 17, 2018, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, Intermediate Swing Bed Unit, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was born June 15, 1922 at Rush Center, Kansas, the son of Roy and Verna (Hallett) Button. He graduated from La Crosse Rural High School in 1940. He farmed for one year before attending Kansas State University for one year and Fort Hays State University for one year. He then returned to farming, and continued to do so in both Rush and Pawnee counties from 1944 to 1993.

Forrest was a former member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church for many years where he was an active member. He was most recently an active member of the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas. He was also a member of the Walnut City Lodge #215, Rush Center, Kansas, for over 70 years, and was a charter member of the Rush County Speculators in March, 1998. He served as the Grand Marshal of the La Crosse Alumni parade in 2015. He was also a member of the Walnut Valley Senior Center, Rush Center, Kansas.

On September 2, 1945 he married Blanche Patricia Haller at her parents’ home in Otis, Kansas. She died on August 3, 2015.

Other survivors include one son, Thomas Harry and wife Kathy of Oakley, Kansas, one daughter, Janice Herman and husband Don of Benton, Kansas, and daughter-in-law Pamela Button of Whitesboro, Oklahoma, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by son Robert Dale Button, infant sons David Lee and Richard Jay, his parents, sister Dorothy Jean Rice and brother Kenneth Roy Button.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 20, 2018, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Friday, September 21, 2018, from 1:00 P.M. to 1:50 P.M. at the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Friday, September 21, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. at the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Angie Vertz officiating. Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

Robert William ‘Bob’ Prockish

Robert William “Bob” Prockish, age 84 of Natoma, Kansas, passed away on September 17, 2018 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Bob was born June 22, 1934 in Hays, Kansas to William and Regina (Hammerschmidt) Prockish. He grew up in the Hays area. On February 7, 1959 in Hays, Kansas he married Linda Jensen. To this union 3 sons were born. Michael Andrew, James Lee, and Robert William Jr.

Bob worked in the oil fields in his younger years then later moved his family to Woodston and worked for John E. Jones. In 1973 he moved his family to Stockton and started his own welding business. Bob was well known as “Rod Burner” by many as he spent most of his life as a welder. Bob was also a charter member of Solomon Valley Antique Association. He enjoyed the time he spent with the saw mill, tractors, steam engines, and friends.

Bob’s wife Linda, passed in October of 1990, and later that year in December, his son bobby was killed in a truck wreck. A few short years later in October of 1993 another son, Mike, passed away. Even through the tragedy of losing a large part of his family he remained strong and relied on faith, friendship, and family in those hard times.

Bob met Beverly Hachmeister who soon became his companion and a part of his family. They spent 24 years together. They traveled, gardened, built trinkets, enjoyed dancing, and making pancakes. They were known for their garden produce, canning, and jelly making. More than companions, they were the best of friends.

Bob had 3 grandchildren of his own, along with Beverly’s grandkids, they were all his pride and joy. He recently became a great grandpa and was so proud of his new great-grandson.

Bob was a kind and gentle man, ornery to afault and never knew a stranger. He will be deeply missed by everyone.

He was preceeded in death by his parents William and Regina; brothers Dan and Tom Prockish; wife Linda; and sons, Mike and Bobby.

Bob is survived by his son Jim (Jayne) Prockish; companion Beverly Hachmeister; grandchildren Jamie and Jeff Dohm, Jake Prockish, and Jesse Prockish, Tesha (Nathan) Wampler, Nathaniel (Natasha) Florian, Natasha (Matthew) Mondero, Brandi (Tolan) Lichty, Nathan Bitter, and Lucas Hachmeister; great-grandchildren Jonah Dohm, Collin and Kaiden Wampler, Preston and Kira Florian, Matthew Mondero, and Alayna Hachmeister; sister Carol Jean (Bob Malin); step-children Paula (Brent) Bitter and Ken (Sheila) Hachmeister nephews, neices, and many friends.

Even though we feel he left us too soon, he lived life that touched many, and someday we will meet again.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. til 8 p.m. at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Stockton. Burial will be in the Mount Allen Cemetery in Hays, Kansas following the service. Memorials are suggested to the Stockton and Natoma Ambulance Service and may be sent in care of Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 North 1st, Stockton, KS 67669.

Trevor Robert Cates

Trevor Robert Cates, 40, passed away September 17, 2018, in rural Stafford County. He was born in Great Bend, December 11, 1977, to Bob and Alvita (Tinkel) Cates. He married Megan Drake August 1, 2009 at Estes Park, Colorado. She survives.

A lifetime Claflin resident, Trevor was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. He was an ASE certified auto technician for his father, at Bob’s Service Center in Claflin. Trevor enjoyed golfing, cars, grilling and camping.

Survivors include, his wife, Megan Cates of the home; daughters, Sierra Drake of Salina, Emma Williams and Hadley Cates of the home; his parents, Bob and Alvita Cates of Claflin; one sister, Tamara Dody and husband Jason of Claflin; four nephews, Paxton, Peyton, Prycen and Parker Dody of Claflin and grandmother, Thelma Cates. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Albert and Laura Tinkel and V. E. Cates.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Claflin, with Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 21, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Church in Claflin with Father Terrance Klein presiding. Interment will be in the Claflin Cemetery.
