Susan Virginia Babcock

Susan Virginia Babcock was born July 2, 1944 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and passed from this life on September 2, 2018 at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, Kansas.

Susan was the daughter of Vern and Virginia (McCoy) McClain. She had a tough start to life when she was born weighing only 2 pounds and was not expected to live through the night. But the Lord had other plans. Her daddy was away serving in WW II in Italy, and she got to know him by looking at his picture. She married Richard (Dick) Babcock on February 10, 1961 at Smith Center, Kansas. To this union two daughters were born, Michelle (Cahoj) and Cheryl (Elsen). This young family made their home in Hoxie before briefly moving to Salina and then Hays, Kansas, returning to Hoxie as the girls started school. In 1979, they ventured out into the unknown and moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona where they lived for 12 years before, again, returning home to Hoxie. Susan and Dick celebrated 50 years of marriage before his passing in 2011.

In earlier years, Susan was known about town simply as “Midge”. She was a bookkeeper for many years and worked for Great Plains Auto Supply in Hoxie and Havasu Auto Supply in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. She also worked as a cashier at Joslyn’s Food Center for a number of years. Susan always worked full time until her retirement and even then continued to work part time until fairly recently when her health begin to decline. Even with the constant medical problems she kept smiling. She was a “joyful” cook and very much enjoyed trying new recipes and fixing everyone’s favorites, with her specialties being the “southern” food she was raised on which was also loved by her family. She was a talented seamstress and made her girls lots of clothes as they were growing up. Susan was also a decorator at heart and loved spending time at home “fixing up”. Her face would light up when she recalled childhood memories of spending time with her grandmothers, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was full of stories of “cousin Shenanigans”. She was an only child, and the relationships with her cousins were so special to her as they really were like brothers and sister to her. She was baptized at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Hoxie in 2015. She loved being a grandma to her three grandchildren and eventually was proud to have three great-grandchildren, Max, Dean and Cativa, getting to meet little Cativa in July. She was so deeply loved by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard (i.e. Dick, Shorty), parents Vern and Virginia; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Leon and Wilma Babcock, all but one of her dear aunts and uncles, and several very beloved cousins.

Susan leaves behind her two daughters, Michelle and husband John Cahoj of Hoxie, Kansas, and Cheryl and husband Frank Elsen of Abilene, Texas; three grandchildren, Richard Cahoj and wife Monica of Bay City, Michigan, Chere Tiller and husband Stetson of Port Orchard, Washington and Gabrielle Elsen of Abilene, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Max Tiller, Dean Tiller, and Cativa Cahoj. She also leaves behind her brother-in-law, Charles Babcock and wife Ruth of Dodge City, Kansas; her Uncle Jim McCoy of Brandon, Mississippi; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will all miss her deeply.

A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for Friday, September 7, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at the Saint Frances Cabrini Catholic Church. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Visitation will be September 6, 2018, from 1:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with family receiving friends from 5:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. A Tribute and Rosary Service will be held at 6:30 P.M. all at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie, Kansas. Peter Virgil Pfeifer

Peter Virgil Pfeifer, 85, died Friday, August 31, 2018 at Via Christi Village Care Center.

Pete was born on August 20, 1933 in Hays, Kansas to Pete and Catherine (Unrein) Pfeifer. He grew up on a farm just north of Hays and remained there for his entire life.

Pete took over the farming when his father’s health was declining and met Anita while she was still in high school. Peter married Anita M. Pfannenstiel on September 27, 1952. This earthly love story would continue until Anita’s passing on July 13, 2012.

Pete was all about farming and providing for his family. He had a love for many things, but one that continued life-long was horses. Pete, along with fellow quarter horse lovers formed a local chapter of the Registered Quarter Horse Association. They acquired land and donated their time to prepare the grounds and construct the arena. When his family was young the pastures were full of horses. He passed on this love to his children. The horses were used to herd the dairy cattle for milking and the pleasure of riding these beautiful creatures of God. It was a sad time when Peter sold his last horse.

Pete loved sports. He was a great athlete but had to give up organized sports to take over the farming. He played ball with his family and encouraged each of them to compete. Pete and Anita bowled on a league for many years. When his children played he would attend if the milking schedule permitted. Pete also followed professional football and college football and basketball. In his later years he knew when the games were on TV and planned his evenings around the games. He was diligent about watching the Kansas State Wildcats and the Kansas City Chiefs. He watched many a Kansas City Royals game because that was Anita’s favorite. Many discussions (aka bets) were made over the prospect of his team winning. When his later years permitted he traveled with Anita to watch the grandsons and granddaughters participate in sporting events.

Pete being a typical farmer was a “jack” of all trades. His welding abilities went into the construction of most of the storage sheds on the farm. When Mom wanted a “new” house he helped complete the carpentry work, etc. on that house. He had plumbing, electrical and mechanical skills which he used to keep everything operating.

Carpentry was another of his loves. Once the milk cows were gone the milk barn was converted to his workshop. He now had time to build furniture for Anita and his now grown, married children and the grandkids. Over the years cradles, rocking horses, tables, dressers, bookcases, end tables and many other pieces were created by his love for family and talent for carpentry.

Pete wanted to carry on the German traditions and feed his family economically. So, he acquired the needed equipment and butchered beef, pork, chickens, rabbits and wild game. The “butcher” room was a busy sight with all of us doing our part. The end result was great tasting meats, especially the pork sausage and liverwurst.

When Pete lost his love Anita in July 2012, he taught himself to do wood carving. Anita and Pete would have celebrated 60 years of marriage that September. So, he turned that great loss into carving. He looked forward each day into going into his little carving shop. Once again just like the furniture the family were recipients of his many creations. He became very creative and started adding motion in his designs. The horses and cattle were his favorites and his best.

Pete is survived by his seven children; his son Steven and Denise Pfeifer and their children, Kim and Rick (Tristan, Wyatt, Westan) and Melissa and John (Gretchen), stepchildren, Travis and Emily (Anna and Ryan), Mike and Nicole (Ace, Kaden and Rylee), Bryan and Jennifer, and Larry; his son Dennis and wife Janet, their children, Jaime and Dave Liudahl (Carter, Chloe, and Coleman), son Dustin and Amber (Andre, Maya, Anthony, Bella and Anna), daughter Jara (Dakota, Demitria and Journee) and son Dexter and Carissa; his daughter Joyce Pfeifer (Marissa McHugh), his son Randy and Linda (Brandy), his daughter Karen and Dan Randa , their son Justin and Hillary (Owen), their son Jordan (Ashlynn); his daughter Diana and Gordon Lynn and their daughter Audrey and Joe Roundy (Tatum, Jett and Jensen), their son Trey and Reanna ( Gordon and Waylon) and their son Austin; and his son Keith and Cindy (Kiana). This makes 18 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren for Pete.

Pete is also survived by his sisters Florence Kuhn, Venita Collier and brother Robert J. Pfeifer. He was preceded in death by sisters Agnes Kreutzer, Regina Arnhold, Martina Kreutzer, Alfreda Schmeidler and his brother Wilfred James Pfeifer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, Hays, with Fr. Barry Brinkman officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday and 9:00 am until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. Sandra Jean (Brown) Thompson

Sandra Jean (Brown) Thompson, 80, died August 26, 2018 at the Graham County Hospital in Hill City, Kansas. She was born April 25, 1938 to Oscar and Alberta (Elliott) Brown in Bogue, Kansas.

She was born at the couple’s home, a home that Sandy would continue to grow up in and later live with her own family.
Sandy went on her first date with her future husband when he was in third grade and she was a first grader. His parents took them to Stockton to the movies and then for ice cream. Then on June 17, 1956, a month after Sandy’s graduation, she was united in marriage to James “Jamie” Thompson in the Bogue Community United Methodist Church. They made their home in Everett, Washington while Jamie was stationed at Paine Air Force Base. While Jamie served a tour of duty at Ladd AFB, Fairbanks, Alaska, she lived with her parents in Hill City. Following Jamie’s discharge, they moved to Denver, Colorado to attend school at Parks Business College. Sandy worked as a legal secretary while Jamie completed his course in Higher Accounting and Business Administration. In the fall of 1960, they move home to Bogue where Jamie began employment with the Farmers State Bank.

Sandra then began her fulltime career as homemaker and mother to first Tim and later Tammy and Toby. The children all agree, she was the best mom anyone could ever hope for. To say the least, she was organized and consistent and had a schedule for everything. Even though they probably didn’t always appreciate or even realize it until much later; but because of this, she provided them with a completely worry-free childhood. The house was meticulously clean, laundry always caught up and a hot meal on the table three times a day. They do not ever remember her being sick or even the least bit grouchy. In fact, she did all with joy, always humming, always smiling. Even in the end, when things got rough, she never complained. She just kept going as long as she could. The last night she was home, even as she struggled to get to the table for dinner, she was still humming!

After the children were grown she was employed by Farmers State Bank, which later became the Stockton National Bank. She continued this employment until she retired in 2000. She was active in her church, TPM Club, United Methodist Women, and Builders Class, Ladies Coffee Group, which was a highlight of every day, Second Chances, and wrote the Bogue News for the Hill City Times.

Sandy was a marvelous cook and shared this talent with friends and family. Sunday dinners were a favorite time for family. No matter who could be there, she would have dinner on the table and there was always enough no matter if extras dropped in. She also enjoyed having extended family gatherings. She organized many Thompson reunions, both on Memorial and Labor Day weekends as well as hosting Thanksgiving dinners each year. She especially enjoyed the Gustafson Oyster supper at Christmas.

As busy as she was, Sandy still had time for things she loved. Her grandchildren’s events, whether it was a ballgame, music concert, art show, or horse show, she was always eager to attend. Sandy was always up for a game of dominoes. She especially enjoyed getting together with her cousins for an afternoon of eating, sharing and playing. She tried many times to get her family to play with her, but she always won, so most were hesitant. Her flower gardens were very important to her. She knew the names of hundreds of flowers and enjoyed planting and tending them. Sandy was a shopper, spending an entire day looking at everything. She rarely bought unless she had a coupon or there was sale; or even better, finding a great bargain at a garage sale. On almost every outing, she found someone she knew and would stop and visit, always with a smile; never in a hurry to move on. The last few years, she enjoyed having visitors, but you needed to make sure you didn’t arrive during Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune or you could only visit during commercials!

She was preceded in death by her parents: Oscar and “Bertie”; sister-in-law, Janice Booi; nephew Brock Booi; and in-laws Rex and Marie Thompson.

Leaving to mourn her passing are her husband of 62 years; her sister, Carolyn Erickson of Denver, Colorado; her children: Tim Thompson and wife Karen of Bogue, Tammy and husband Greg Tang of Kansas City, Missouri; Toby Thompson of Hill City; nine grandchildren, three-step grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Sandra has left this world, but all of us here today are much better people because we knew her. Let her legacy of joy and love live on in us.
