William ‘Bill’ or ‘Bo’ Bobek

William “Bill” or “Bo” Bobek passed away at his home in Plainville, Kansas on August 27, 2018. He was 96 years old.

Bill was born in Breezyhill, Kansas on January 30, 1922 to Louis and Paulene (Goveshek) Bobek.

After living through the Great Depression and working at a CCC camp in Utah, Bill served in the United States Navy from December 10, 1942 to December 30, 1945. He served during World War II and crossed the Equator three times during his tour of service. Bill and Tina Hamel met at Leta’s Café in Plainville where she worked as a waitress. He won her heart when he left a silver dollar under his plate each day she served him. They were married on September 10, 1960 in Plainville where they raised three children. Bill spent most of his working life as a tank setter in the oilfield. He and Tina purchased B&M Recreation in 1977. It later became known as Tina’s Recreation, a place fondly remembered by many. He enjoyed spending his later years with family, friends, and their three puppies, Sophie, Toby, and Lucy.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Rudy and Louie (Bill’s twin); and three sisters, Madeline, Christina, and Helen.

He is survived by his wife of the home; daughter, Kayla (Rocky) Hamblet; sons, Kris (Stacey) Bobek, and Kevin (Shari) Bobek; seven grandchildren, Lindsey Hamblet, Lacey (Kenny) Sweeney, Landon Hamblet, Samantha Bobek, Colton Bobek, Dalton Bobek, and Simone Bobek; and two great-grandchildren, Tripp and Twynn Tetuan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Plainville. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00-8:00pm on Wednesday at the funeral home with a Vigil Service and Rosary at 7:00pm. Family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm.

Helen Elfreda Bangert Walter

Helen Elfreda Bangert Walter, 99, of Hoisington, Kansas, and former Russell, Kansas, resident died on Monday, August 27, 2018, at the Country Place Senior Living Center in Hoisington.

Helen was born in 1918 at the family home 3 miles south of Milberger, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Mollie (Stettinger) Strecker. She was confirmed in the American Lutheran Church of Milberger. She attended Liberty Rural School in Barton County, Kansas. She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Rueben Bangert on February 19, 1939, in Russell County. From this union Helen and Rueben were blessed with 3 sons Larry, Dennis and Allen and they made their home on a farm 7 miles south of Russell, Kansas. She enjoyed her fulltime job of being a wife, mother and homemaker to her growing family. On April 11, 1967, Helen lost her beloved husband Rueben, in a traffic accident while he was helping a woman pull her car from a ditch. Helen was blessed in finding love a second time and was united in marriage to Dave Walter on August 05, 1972, and they made their home in Ness City, Kansas. Dave preceded her in death on July 27, 1976. After Dave’s death she moved back to Russell and worked for 20 years as a food service worker in the Bickerdyke Elementary School Cafeteria. She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church and was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilt making and most of all enjoyed spending time with her family.

Surviving family include her 3 sons Larry Bangert (Judy) of Arvada, Colorado, Dennis Bangert (Tenna Rae) of Derby, Kansas and Allen Bangert (Mary) of Russell, Kansas; 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren and 2 step children and 2 step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 husbands and 3 brothers Paul Strecker, Roy Strecker and Melvin Strecker.

A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the mortuary. Family will greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Wednesday evening. Memorials may be given to Kindred Hospice and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Sandra J. “Sandy” Thompson

Sandra J. “Sandy” Thompson was born April 25, 1938.

She died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018.

Patricia Gean Bienhoff

KENSINGTON—Patricia Gean Bienhoff, 81,  passed away on Friday, Aug. 24, 2018 at the Prairie Wind Villa in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Survivors include her sons Curtis (Natalie) and Robert (Amy) both of Kensington; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 at Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary, 116 W. First St., Smith Center, KS 66967.

A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29 at  St. John Lutheran Church, 708 N. Main St., Kensington, KS 66951

Bienhoff will be laid to rest at the St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery in Kensington.

Dianne C. Matreci

Dianne C. Matreci, 69, Hays, Kansas died Friday, August 24, 2018, at Via Christi Village Care Center in Hays, Kansas.

Services are pending at Clines-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Regina Irene Stoppel

Regina Irene Stoppel, age 95, died on August 23, 2018 at the Ness County Hospital, Ness City. She was born on January 12, 1923 in Bazine to John and Agnes Friebus Tittel.

For many years, while raising their family, Regina and Otto ran a bakery in their home. Later, Regina worked as a nurses’ aide in the Ness County Hospital. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ness City. She was a very compassionate and caring woman with a great sense of humor. She will be greatly missed.

On October 29, 1943 she married Otto Stoppel in Bazine. He preceded her in death on April 20, 2002.

Regina is survived by her two sons, Eugene Stoppel, and his wife, Becky, of Gainsville, Texas and Kenny Stoppel of Salina; two daughters, Anetta Pfannenstiel of Wichita and LeAnn Stoppel of Hays; one brother, Carl Tittel, and his wife, Louise, of Auburndale, Florida; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Otto, Edward, Albert, Werner, Gary, and Ted Tittel; one sister, Betty Waterhouse, one son-in-law, Kenny Pfannenstiel, and an infant grandson.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 27, 2018, 10:30 A.M. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ness City with burial in the Ness City Cemetery.

Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Sunday, August 26, 2018 from 9:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. with the family present starting at 5:00 P.M.

Thomas Alexander Kirgis

Thomas Alexander Kirgis, 71, of Woodston, KS, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018 at his home. He was born on July 15, 1947 to John M. & Rosalie (DePoy) Kirgis at Beloit, KS. He was one of several children.

Thomas graduated from high school. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy during the Viet Nam War.

Thomas was a welder for Wilkens Manufacturing.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son: Thomas J. Kirgis of Lucas, KS; daughter: Carrie L. Bennett of Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho; sisters: Beverly McGuire of Red Oak, TX; Judy Yates of San Marcos, TX; Cindy Leslie of Alvarado, TX; 9 grandchildren.

Cheryl D. True Hall

Cheryl D. True Hall, 63, of Osborne, KS passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at her home. She was born June 6, 1955 to Kenneth & Cleta (Gillen) True at Smith Center, KS. Cheryl was one of several children.

Cheryl was a Fort Hays State University graduate. She married Keith Hall & to this union, 2 children were born. Cheryl was a cattle producer. They have lived in Osborne the past 11 years after living in the area of Stockton, Alton and Osborne for 34 years.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Keith; daughter: Jenny Walters of Hays, KS; son: Justin, of Osborne, KS; sister: Cindy Wagner of Kensington, KS; brother: Lynn True of Smith Center, KS; and 1 grandchild.

Doris Irene Pooley Brumley

Doris Irene Pooley Brumley, 81, of Salina, Kansas, and former Natoma, Kansas resident, died on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at the Smokey Hill Health and Rehabilitation of Salina, Kansas.

Doris was born on September 03, 1936, in Paradise, Kansas, the daughter of James and Helen (Naylor) Pooley. Doris grew up in Rural Russell County and graduated from Lucas High School and lived in Russell County most of her life. She was formerly married to Robert H. Fischer. She was blessed with 4 children Robert, Laurette, David and Michael. She worked at Larned State Hospital as a licensed mental health technician. She also worked as a certified nurse’s assistant at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell. Doris loved music, especially country music, and played in a few country music bands. She enjoyed singing, writing song, playing the guitar, bass and mandolin and wrote many country songs throughout the years. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her sons David Fischer (Krysta) of Salina, Kansas and Michael Fischer of Olathe, Kansas; sisters Marjorie Graham of Russell, Kathy Rose of Hoisington, Kansas; 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, ex-husband Robert H. Fischer, son Robert A. Fischer, daughter Laurette E. Fischer, brother James Pooley and sister Roberta Brown.

A celebration of Doris’ life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, August 27, 2018, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Natoma City Cemetery in Natoma, Kansas. Visitation will be from Noon to 8 P.M. on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at the mortuary in Russell, with family greeting guests from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. Sunday afternoon. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association and can be sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Loretta Mae Sandmeyer

Loretta Mae Sandmeyer, 87, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, August 20, 2018.

Arrangements are under the care of Dighton-Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater. There are no services at this time.

Loretta was born on June 23, 1931 in Hays, Kansas, to John and Mary (Colahan) Jacobs. She grew up in Hays, Kansas, and graduated from the Girls Catholic High School in 1949. She married the love of her life, Robert Sandmeyer, on August 5, 1950, in at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in San Francisco, California.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Jacobs.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Sandmeyer of the home, children, Karen Hunter, Bridgit Wall, Barbara Sandmeyer and Bobby Sandmeyer. She is also survived by one brother, John Jacobs, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

William ‘Bill’ McDaniel

William “Bill” McDaniel, age 67, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 peacefully at his home in Concordia. He was born May 7, 1951 in Concordia, Kansas to Harland and Alberta (Baltazor) McDaniel.

Bill was a 1969 graduate of Concordia High School. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business in 1973 from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas.

He married Linda Wood on June 11, 1977 in Abilene, Kansas and she preceded him in death on April 19, 2004. Bill later married Mandy Kearn on, May 18, 2013 in Concordia, Kansas, she survives of the home.

Bill was a farmer in the Concordia area until 2005 and he also worked as a Concrete Finisher for Coonrod and Associates, Wichita, Kansas for over 30 years.

He was a member of the local American Legion Post #76, VFW Post # 588 and Moose Lodge.

He loved coming home to see his little buddy, helping others, visiting friends, and most of all spending time with his beloved family.

Bill is survived by his wife, Mandy McDaniel, Concordia, KS.; son, David McDaniel, Salina, KS.; Daughter, Jessica McDaniel, Concordia, KS.; son, Zakary Romo (Adrianna), Hays, KS.; son, Alexander McDaniel, Concordia, KS.; sister, Cathy White (Greg), Clay Center, KS.; brother, Jim McDaniel, Topeka, KS.; sister, Karen Eubanks (Jerry), Concordia, KS.; sister, Glenda Weaver (Richard), Aurora, KS.; brother, John McDaniel (Deb), Grosse Point, MI.; sister, Debra Benson (Jeff), Salina, KS.; brother, Michael McDaniel, NE., many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Linda, parents, Harland and Alberta, brother, Tony McDaniel, sister-in-law, Diana McDaniel, brother-in-law, Jason Kearn.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life Service will be held 12:00 P.M., on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at the American Legion Post # 76, Concordia, Kansas.

Carol Sue Albers

Carol Sue Albers, 80, of Grinnell, died Wednesday, August 22, 2018, in Quinter, KS. She was born February 19, 1938, in Grinnell, KS, to J.E. and Gertrude (Schwarz) Moore. On June 22, 1957, she married George Albers and to this union fifteen children were born. Carol was a homemaker and also had worked as a waitress at Mittens for 17 years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Salina Diocese’s Council of Catholic Women. Carol enjoyed spending time volunteering at the Grinnell-Angelus Area Heritage Center, the Grinnell Senior Center and for the Gove County Medical Center Auxiliary.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; husband George; brother John Moore; sister Gretchen Anderson; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by her children Nicholus, Denice (Bill) Jehring, Angie (Greg) Heinrich, Bea Albers, Merl (Stephanie), Julian R. Carol Sue Albers (Schwarz)

Carol Sue Albers (Schwarz), 80, died Wed., Aug. 22 in Quinter, Kan. She was born Feb. 19, 1938.

Visitation will be held Fri., Aug. 24, 5-7 p.m., at Immaculate Conception Parish Center, 308 South Monroe, Grinnell, Kan., with the vigil service at 7 p.m.

The funeral service for Albers is Sat., Aug. 25, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. James Thomas officiating.

Interment is in Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery, N. 1st St. and Ferris St., Grinnell.
