Ada Mae Stebbens

Ada Mae Stebbens, 85, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018. She was born April 27, 1933, to Edgar Charles and Martha Melissa (Lewis) Loop. She married Donald Theodore Stebbens on Sept. 8, 1951.

She is survived by two daughters: Debra Brenner (Mark), of Riverside, California., and Diane Schuck (Lenus), of Hill City; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; and all siblings. Private family services will be at a later date. There is no visitation nor local services.

Jerry Lee White

Jerry Lee White, 66, died Monday, July 2, 2018, at his residence in Colby, Kansas.

White was born May 5, 1952 in Hoxie, Kansas and was a retired parts manager for a farm implement dealership.

He is survived by his mother LaVada Campbell, Colby; son Brian (Rebecca) White, Wichita, Kan; daughter Mindy (Terry) Meador, Porter, Okla.; brothers John (Dona) White and Grant (Rhonda) White, both of Colby; sisters Linda (Wes) Rummel, Goodland, Kan., Debbie (Bill) Messamore, Wichita, Kan., Karen Harper, Wichita, Kan., and Tracy Campbell, Colby, Kan., and 4 grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday, July 6, at 3 p.m., in Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel, 745 S. Country Club Dr., Colby, with officiant Rev. Julie King. There will be no visitation as cremation has been chosen. Inurnment will be in Beulah Cemetery, Colby.

Memorials may be made to benefit the Colby High School sports programs in care of the funeral chapel.

Vera M. Saddler

Vera M. Saddler, 94, died Mon., July 2, 2018, at the Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby, Kansas.

She was born June 7, 1924, in Gem, Kansas and was a retired homemaker.

Saddler is survived by her sons Carlos D. Saddler (Janet) of Colby and Lyle W. Saddler (Nancy), Colby; her daughter, Wynn E. Duffey (Ray), Colby; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Saddler was preceded in death by her husband Donald, daughters Donna K. Morford and Carol M. Harshberger, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 6, 10:30 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, Colby, with officiant Rev. Dixie Anders. Visitation is Thu., July 5, 3-6 p.m. at Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel, 745 S. Country Club Drive, Colby. Burial will be in Beulah Cemetery, Colby.

Memorials may be made to NWKS Foundation for Hope, First Presbyterian Church and the March of Dimes.

Walter Eugene Cook

Walter Eugene Cook, age 59, of rural Trego County, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, WaKeeney. He was born December 17, 1958, in Hays, Kansas, to Carroll Dean and Mildred Joan (Hamilton) Cook.

Walter graduated from Trego Community High School before attending college at Mid America Nazarene College and Fort Hays State University. He was united in marriage to Karen Schneider on December 27, 1980, in WaKeeney. Walter owned and operated Cook Cattle Company, as a farmer and rancher, and previously owned and operated Cook’s Exteriors. He attended North Oak Community Church in Hays. Walter was a loyal supporter of Trego Community High School sports, and was an avid Kansas State University football fan. Motorcycles were a passion of Walter’s, but his family was the most important thing in his life. He cherished time spent with his children and his grandchildren, lovingly known as his “littles”. He was known as “Bubba” to his littles. His kind heart and loving spirit will live on in the hearts of many.

Survivors include his mother; his wife; his children, Donielle and husband Scott Geesling of Kingman, Kansas, Charisse and husband Mike Moratelli of Firestone, Colorado, and Wade Cook and wife Aubrey of Parkville, Missouri; grandchildren, Easton and Beckett Cook of Parkville, Mack and Rocco Walt Moratelli of Firestone, and Nash and Dean Geesling of Kingman; two brothers David Cook and wife Zerell of Choctaw, Oklahoma, and Evan Cook and wife Terry of Coldwater, Oklahoma; a sister Cynthia Diehl of Phoenix, Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father on April 30, 2010.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 5, 2018 at United Methodist Church of WaKeeney. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Visitation and viewing will be Wednesday evening, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home in WaKeeney.

Patricia I. Cochran

Patricia I. Cochran, 88, passed away peacefully in Sterling, CO on June 20th 2018.

She was born on December 23, 1929 in Elkhart Kansas. She was the daughter of Leslie Ulysses “Pete” and Cora (Orman) Harmon.

She graduated high school from Kit Carson, CO in 1947, and was the band majorette. She attended Colorado Women’s College in Denver where she received her Associates Degree in Interior Decoration. She then attended Colorado A&M and received her degree in Animal Husbandry.

After college in 1952, she married Richard Cochran and raised their three children while ranching. She began teaching at Platte Canyon near Bailey, Colorado and taught many subjects to Jr. High and High School students, including Spanish, English, and reading for 22 years. She especially enjoyed teaching students with special needs.

In 1978, Pat divorced and moved to a ranch located in Goodland, KS. No one who met Pat could forget her tenacious spirit and passion for her ranch. Pat raised Limousine, Salair, and Wagu cattle as well as Sharpei dogs and pigs. After 27 years of hard work, she sold ranch in 2005.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pat is survived by her children Dr. Mark Lee Cochran of Sterling, CO; Sherry Haugen of Center, CO; Michael Cochran (Glenda) of Goodland, KS; sister Iris Harmon of Canon City, CO; and brother Forrest Harmon of Meeker CO; her grandchildren Cash (Jessie) Cochran; Weston (Alli); Shane (Sami); Jessica (Daniel); Hope, and many great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services for Patricia will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 10:00 AM MT at the Church of Christ in Goodland with Pastor Brent Flanders officiating.

Robert A. Veselik-Jones

Robert A. Veselik-Jones, 47, passed away on May 25, 2018 at his home in Broomfield, Colorado.

Robert was born on September 16, 1970 to Robert L. and Patricia (Bastian) Jones in Peoria, Illinois. He was one of four children.

He was an avid bowler, and played the trombone. He was a Restaurant Manager. On December 19, 1992, he married Valerie Veselik in Goodland, Kansas at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. To this union, two children Brittny and Katherine were born.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his mother-in-law Sara Veselik, and one brother Lonnie Brancecum.
He is survived by his wife Valerie, his two daughters Brittny and Katherine Veselik-Jones, and two brothers David Jones and Tom Brancecum of Illinois.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018 at 10:30 AM MT at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Goodland with Father Andrew Rockers officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Goodland Cemetery, Goodland, Kansas.

In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be designated to the American Kidney Association and may be left at the services of mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

Kathryn L. Miller

Kathryn L. Miller, 90, a lifelong resident of the Bison, Kansas, area died June 28, 2018, in Wichita after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Kathryn was born in Otis, Kansas, to Fred, Sr., and Agnes (Funk) Jones at the family farm on March 10, 1928, where she was raised with her siblings. After attending college, Kathryn became a one-room schoolhouse teacher for 1st-8th grade students, teaching for 13 years. A devoted farmer’s wife, Kathryn helped run the farm for decades before moving on to other ventures. Kathryn’s later pursuits included tax preparation, helping run Miller Custom Homes, managing the local Texaco gas station, and working as a real estate broker. She also enjoyed travelling in later years to destinations varying from Cozumel, Mexico, to Alaska. She was renowned for her delicious cooking and her brilliance as a grandmother.

Kathryn married Virgel Miller on May 23, 1953. He preceded her in death in July 2016 after 63 years of marriage.

Survivors include three daughters: Kay Boyd (Austin) of Wichita; Renee Nicholson (Leonard) of Hoisington; and Teresa Miller of Wichita; six grandchildren: Melissa Baier of Wichita; Kelsey Beckman of Wichita; Josh Nicholson (Melissa) of Hoisington; Jeremy Baier (Jenna) of Bloomington, IL; Derek Nicholson (Brittni) of Hoisington; and Cameron Beckman (Shannon) of Wichita; and five great-grandchildren: Azalea and Jersey Baier; Abel Nicholson; Presley Beckman and another one on the way. She is also survived by a sister, Nila Hartman, of Fort Collins, Colorado; sister-in-law, Maureen Jones, of Dodge City; and many much loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Fred Jones, Jr.; and brother-in-law, Nelson Hartman.

A viewing will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2018, with the family receiving visitors from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse.

A viewing will also be held from 1:00-1:50 p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2018, with a celebration of life beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Janousek Funeral Home. Interment will follow at La Crosse Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Walnut Valley Senior Center or the Alzheimer’s Association.

George Crawford III, age 46 of Ellis, passed away Friday, June 29, 2018 in Ellis.

Frances Irene Berkgren

Frances Irene Berkgren, 82, was born September 2, 1935 at Pinoak, Pennsylvania to Earl and Irene Louie Hagerty Stephens. She and her brother, Frank, were the second set of twins in the family. The other set of twins are John and Joan. Frances graduated from Cranberry High School, Cranberry, Pennsylvania in 1953. She graduated from Vennard College, University Park, Iowa in 1968. She worked at various mission fields, including Bethany Children’s Home in Kentucky, and the Salvation Army Home and Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Frances had a special place in her heart for the American Indians, having worked at Brainerd Indian School, Hot Springs, South Dakota and All Tribes Indian School, Bernalillo, New Mexico, and worked with missionary friends in South Dakota and New Mexico. She also enjoyed going to Mexico to help the missionaries.

Frances met her first husband, Rev. Harry A. Zufall, at Brainerd Indian School. They were married Nov. 20, 1970 at Morgantown, West Virginia. They ministered together in South Dakota, New Mexico, and pastored churches in Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. Rev. Zufall passed away at Miltonvale, Kansas May 26, 1983.

Frances was married to Harold Berkgren Nov. 21, 1987 at the Clay Center Bible Methodist Church (Alabama Conference). Harold passed away Nov. 1, 2008.

She enjoyed playing the piano, organ, keyboard, and cow bells. She also enjoyed being a Senior companion. She enjoyed crocheting baby afghans and writing poetry.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, baby sister Dorothy Maxine, sister Evelyn Audine Kerr and brothers Roland Earl, Williard Arden, twin brother Frank Roger, baby sister Maxine Dorothy, and beloved sister Joan Ruth Sheffer. She is survived by brother John Edwin and wife Chris, Kennerdell, Pennsylvania and sister in law Miriam Stephens, Reading, Pennsylvania, and several nephews and one niece.
