Janis Meredith (Gross) Schwab, 75, Hays, died Monday, June 18, 2018 at her home.

A memorial service will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, Hays.

Family will receive friends from 9:30 am until service time.

Veda Jean Hixon

Veda Jean Hixon was born December 1, 1927, east of Gem, Kansas on the family farm in Thomas County. Her parents were Thomas and Barbara (Shoffner) Hopper.

Veda worked in the Traffic Department in Colby, Kansas as a telephone operator on September 12, 1945. During her service in the department, she held several titles pertaining to her work. She was a Central Office Clerk, Supervisor Over Operators, and Operator Instructor, and in 1970, she was promoted to management as a Group Chief Operator.

In 1997, she was transferred in management to Chanute, Kansas due to the closing of the Traffic Department in Colby. After a little over a year, she was again transferred to Hutchinson, Kansas where she worked until retiring in 1981.

In 1982, Veda moved to Hays, Kansas where she married Gerald Hixon on May 14, 1983. Gerald preceded her in death on August 21, 1997.

Veda was preceded in death by both her parents, three brothers and four sisters. She is survived by numerous nephews and nieces including great-great and great-great-great.

Graveside services will take place at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 30th at the Gem Cemetery in Gem, Kansas. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Salina, 730 Holly Lane – Salina, KS 67401

Virginia Cox Phelps

Former Sharon Springs resident Virginia Cox Phelps, 84, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2018 at the Avantara Crown Point Nursing Home in Parker, Colorado.

Virginia was born on November 9, 1933 in Skidmore, TX to Jasper and Marie (Natho) Curbello. She was the eighth child of ten born to this union. She grew up and attended school in Skidmore, Texas and graduated from Skidmore-Tynan High School in 1952.

Shortly thereafter Virginia attained certification as a nurse’s aide and worked at the Bee County Hospital in Beeville, TX. While working there, she met and married Marine Corps Lieutenant Frank Rinne who subsequently died while on a training mission 8 weeks later. Not long after, Virginia was hired by Ralph Cox to care for his terminally ill wife Joan and their daughter, Terry. Joan soon passed away and the situation provided for a caring friendship that would eventually develop into courtship and marriage to Ralph. Born to Ralph and Virginia were two boys, Gary and James. From Texas, the family moved to North Carolina for a short period of time, eventually landing in Northern California. Ralph met an untimely death in 1970 and not long after she moved herself and the boys nearer to Ralph’s family roots in Wallace County. Before meeting and marrying Ludia Phelps of Corpus Christi TX., Virginia was married to Everett Linton of Sharon Springs and Glen Elder, KS.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Jasper and Marie Curbello, three husbands, Frank Rinne, Ralph Cox and Ludia Phelps, her son Gary Cox, seven siblings and one grandson Billy Wininger.

She is survived by her son James (Cynthia) Cox of Parker, Colorado, daughter Terry (Michael) Wininger of Depoe Bay, Oregon, daughter-in-law Belinda Cox of Wallace, Kansas, one brother Ross (Shirley) Curbello of Three Rivers, Texas and one sister Nancy (Hal) Toomey of Corpus Christi, Texas. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Virginia liked to garden and crochet. She made beautiful afghans for many family members.

Memorial services for Virginia will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 10:00 AM MT at the Weskan Bible Church(formerly Weskan Methodist Church) in Weskan, KS with Reverend Paul McNall officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Weskan Cemetery.

Memorials may be designated to the Weskan Township Board for the Weskan Cemetery restoration and may be left at the service or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

Ramona Theresa (Ohmes) Kippes

Ramona Theresa (Ohmes) Kippes, 74, Victoria, passed away on June 26, 2018, at her home. 

A selfless and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many, she lived her life putting the needs of others before her own. She was a compassionate, giving person who was an avid reader and who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered for her delicious home cooking and her knack for home decorating. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Ramona was born on May 8th, 1944, in Garden City, KS, to Joseph and Josephine (Ohnsat) Ohmes. She grew up in a large family outside of Garden City, KS, with 7 brothers and 6 sisters.  Ramona was a 1962 graduate of Garden City High School attended Garden City Junior College and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics and a Master’s Degree in Library Science.

She married Norman Kippes of Victoria on October 18th, 1968. She was co-founder and co-owner of Kippes Insurance Agency since 1988. He preceded her in death on March 10, 2004.

She was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis and a volunteer on the St. Fidelis Funeral Committee.
She leaves behind two daughters, Tammi Sauer and her husband Ron of Edmond, OK, and Kathy Ricke and her husband Mike of Valparaiso, IN; and a son, Jason Kippes and his wife Bridgett of Victoria, KS; seven grandchildren, Julia Sauer, Mason Sauer, Madison Ricke, Bryant Ricke, Sierra Ricke, Adalie Kippes, and Pierce Kippes; four sisters, Rosalia Hoffmann and husband Michael, Milwaukee, WI, Vivian Wnuczek and husband Ed, Milwaukee, WI, Gladys Piche and husband Joel, Franklin, WI, and Cacelia Sarnowski and her deceased husband Jerry, Vulcan, MI; three brothers Al Ohmes and wife Pat, Garden City, KS, Frank Ohmes and wife Barbara, Hutchinson, KS, and George Ohmes and wife Lori, Pierceville, KS; sisters-in-law by marriage Jeanette Dreiling, Victoria, KS, Eileen Wilcox, Littleton, CO, and Gladys Brungardt and husband Jim, Victoria, KS, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Kippes; her parents Joseph and Josephine Ohmes; four brothers, Lawrence Ohmes, Joseph J. Ohmes, Sylvester Ohmes, and Anthony Robert Ohmes; and two sisters, Bernadine Herbert and Loretta Page.

Services will be held on Saturday at11:00 A.M. June 30, 2018, at the Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria; burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria.

Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Friday, and from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, at the Basilica of St. Fidelis.

A vigil service will be at 6:45 P.M. Friday followed by a parish rosary at 7:00 P.M all at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested in Ramona’s memory to Hospice of Hays Medical Center or The Basilica of St. Fidelis.

Pamela J. (Nelson) Harter

Pamela J. (Nelson) Harter, of Hays, Kansas, age 60, died Friday, June 22, 2018, at her home in Hays, Kansas.

She was born April 5, 1958, in Salina Kansas, to Maynard E. and Barbara (Hamilton) Nelson.

She was a Sales Associate for Target and also worked for Dollar General. She grew up in Salina, Kansas and was a 1976 graduate of Salina High School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Kansas Wesleyan University at Salina, Kansas. She moved to Hays in 2008. She enjoyed her cats, doing crafts, watching T V soap operas, her trips to Colorado and Utah, and her family.

Survivors include two son, Ryan Harter and wife, Allison, Aurora, CO; Nicholas Harter and wife, Kylie, Eagle Mountain, UT; her companion, Robert Windholz, of the home; three brothers, Rick Nelson, FL; Steve Nelson and wife, Ruth, KY; Mike Nelson and wife, Gypsy, Salina, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Shelley Rene Casper

Shelley Rene Casper, 55, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, June 24, 2018, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Shelley was born on April 19, 1963, in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Gary Meis and Gracia Lee (Ostrom) Meis. She grew up in Denver the first few years of her life before moving to Russell, Kansas. She graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1981. She was married to Jack Casper and from this union they were blessed with two children Treysa & Cody. She lived in Russell most of her life and worked as a cook and caregiver. She enjoyed riding motorcycles, being at the lake, cooking, dancing and celebrating the 4th of July. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Surviving family include her father Gary Meis of Russell, Kansas; daughter Treysa Casper of Lawrence, Kansas; son Cody Casper of Russell, Kansas; brother Rick Meis (Kay Sellers) of Russell, Kansas; sister Tessa Meis (Joe Ernst) of Wilson, Kansas and granddaughter Jozie Ludy and grandson Jaxton Casper as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother Gracia L. Rassette, infant daughter Randi Rene Casper and brother Randy Meis.

A celebration of Shelley’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler of Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Michael Eurit officiating. Burial will follow at the Dorrance City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at the mortuary. Memorials may be given to the Russell County Food Bank and sent to the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Ava June Scranton

Ava June Scranton, lifetime resident of Graham County Kansas, passed away June 23, 2018, at the Graham County Hospital one month before her 94th birthday. She was born in rural Graham County to the late Adelbert Downs (A.D.) and Oakie Belle (Washburn) Worcester.

She married Alvin Scranton September 9, 1942. He preceded her in death July 25, 1990. Ava June was an accomplished seamstress, capable carpenter, creative landscaper, and crafty bridge player. She was a real estate broker in the state of Kansas and held a real estate license from 1972 to 1984. She was a member of the Hill City Presbyterian Church.

Ava June was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Scranton; a son-in-law, Hillon Steeples; a brother, Bill Worcester and a sister, Esther Henderson. Survivors include a daughter, Sonja Steeples of Hays, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Martha Scranton, Larned, Kansas; three grandchildren: Kobie Kobler, Tyler (Brenda) Kobler, and Kim (Jay) Holthaus; seven great grandchildren; two sisters: Darlene Wilson, McPherson, Kansas and Bonnie Ginther, Hays; a brother Leonne Worcester, Towanda, Kansas; and a sister-in-law, Esther Worcester, Hill City, Kansas.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Wren Allen Worley

Wren Allen Worley, born September 1, 1923, passed from this life on June 22, 2018.

Wren is survived by Virginia, the love of his life for over 50 years; children Mitch (Dawn) Bill (Carol) Jimmy (Melanie) Wrenda (David) Benson, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on June 26, 2018, at Christ Lutheran Church, 3001 Lovers Lane, Dallas. Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at the Wilson cemetery in Wilson, Kansas.

Dora Lou Lamer Clark

Dora Lou Lamer Clark, 91, Hays, died Saturday, June 23, 2018 at HaysMed.

She was born December 27, 1926 in Salina, Kansas the daughter of Harry Bernard and Clara (Willis) Lamer. She lived in Hermosa Beach, California from 1931 until 1937 then moved to Hays and lived with her parents in the Lamer Hotel, which her grandfather and father built.

She was a student in sixth grade at Picken School at Fort Hays State University, earned her pilot’s license at the age of 16, and graduated from Hays High School in 1945. She studied at Gulf Park College for Women in Gulfport, Mississippi, the University of Colorado, and in 1950 received a B.S. Degree in dietetics and institutional management from Kansas State University. She was united in marriage to Robert Russell “Russ” Clark on July 22, 1950 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Hays with her brother, Rev. H.B. Lamer, Jr. officiating. They celebrated nearly 68 years of marriage.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Hays Book Guild, P.E.O. Chapter I.H., Delta Delta Delta at KSU, bridge club, and a charter member of Smoky Hill Country Club.

Survivors include her husband Russ, of the home in Hays, three sons; Steven Clark of Brooklyn, NY, Patrick Clark of Overland Park, KS, and Robert Clark and wife Lai Ling of Brooklyn, NY, three daughters; Lynn Burke and husband Michael of Galveston, TX, Cindy Maddux of Randolph, KS and Sara Clark of Friday Harbor, WA, and five grandchildren; Russell Maddux, Dora Leigh Maddux, Ava Clark, Meredith Clark, and Lola Clark.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers; Rev. Harry Bernard Lamer, Jr., Charles William “Bus” Lamer, and Stanley Willis Lamer.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, July 2, 2018 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Canal Blvd. with The Very Reverend Canon Jerry S. Jones and The Reverend Dr. Harvey Hillin officiating. Inurnment will be at 2:00 pm at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kansas. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 6:00 on Sunday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, Hays, and from 10:00 am until service time on Monday at the church.

Dennis Stites
Dennis Stites, 79, of Hill City, passed away Friday, June 22, 2018. He was born October 27, 1938, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Ray Nelson and Thelma Ardelia (Beecher) Stites.

When he was three years old the family moved to southern Graham County where he attended the Prairie Home Country School until he finished eighth grade. Then Dennis attended and graduated from Hill City High School in 1956. He married Janice Handlin on September 29, 1957, in Geneseo, Kansas.

Dennis was a lifetime farmer and stockman in southern Graham County Kansas. He served on the Unified School District 281 School Board. He was also very active in the Masons and was a member of the Millbrook Lodge #281 A.F. & A.M. of Hill City, Kansas; of the Isis Shrine Temple of Salina, Kansas, and the Millbrook Chapter 108 – OES of Hill City.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Evelyn Smith. He is survived by his wife Janice. He is also survived by his son, Roger (Mary Petrus), of Birmingham, Alabama; daughter, Sandy Jones (Dennis) of Edmond, Oklahoma; three grandchildren: Taylor Jones, Riley Jones, and Jay (Kate) Peterson all of Edmond; and five great-grandchildren: Cooper, Presley, Myles, Skylar and Grace Peterson all of Edmond.

Visitation will be Monday, June 25, 2-7:30 p.m. at Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy Ave., Hill City, KS. Family will be present to receive friends 5-7:30 p.m.

The funeral service is Tuesday, June 26, at 10:30 a.m. in Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy Ave., Hill City. Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery, rural Graham County, Kansas.

Memorial are suggested to the Graham County Hospital.
