Raymond E. Wurtz

Former Phillipsburg resident Raymond E. Wurtz passed away May 24, 2018 at his home in Denton, TX at the age of 69. He was born Dec. 9, 1948 in Phillipsburg, the son of Roy & Ruby (Holbrook) Wurtz.

He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Trammell of Glade and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Dennis Haarer officiating. Burial will follow in the Marvin Cemetery, Glade.

Visitation will be from 9:00 to 9:00 Thursday at the funeral home.

Rosemary ‘Rose’ Schumacher

Rosemary “Rose” Schumacher, 86, of Wichita, KS, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at her son’s home in Hays. Rose was born on July 14, 1931 to Joseph and Anna (Haffner) Staab in Topeka, KS.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Schumacher; son, Robert; daughter, Linda; and three grandchildren, Nathan, Ryan and Keagan.

Rose is survived by three sons, Timothy (Ruth) of Hays, Alan (Kathy) and Craig (Jackie) of Wichita, KS; daughter, Sashya (Mikki) of Pomona, CA; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, and her “girls” Skye and Sadie.

Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Rich and Joe Staab and her sisters, Lil Fitzpatrick, Aggie Sacco and Lu Isbell

A Mass of Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 E. 13th St., Hays, KS 67601 with Fr. Earl Befort officiating.

Visitation will be held from 9-9:30 AM with a Rosary at 9:30 AM, Saturday, all at the church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Hays.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to be sent to The Lord’s Diner, 520 N. Broadway St., Wichita, KS 67214. They were the beneficiary of many of the 1200 blankets she made for the homeless.

Loretta Marie Gorman

Loretta Marie Gorman, age 88, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2018 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on January 17, 1930 in Hale, Colorado, the daughter of Fred & Marie Tuttle Proehl. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1958 moving from Anderson, Missouri, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and VFW Ladies Auxiliary both of Scott City, Kansas.

On July 18, 1948 she married Earl Gorman in Kanarado, Kansas. He passed away on September 12, 2014 in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her One Son – Orville & Marcine Gorman of Augusta, Kansas, One Daughter – Barbara & Chuck Brobst of Scott City, Kansas, One Brother – Marvin Proehl of Medford, Oregon, One Sister – Norma Wright of Medford, Oregon, Five Grandchildren – Linn & Penny Gorman of Log Lane Village, CO, Chris & Kristi Gorman of Lacey, Washington, Jay & Rae Gorman of Ulysses, Kansas, Jeremy & Jen Brobst of Cutler, Indiana, Larissa Brobst of Scott City, Kansas and Nine Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, One Brother – Raymond Proehl, One Step Brother – Carl Proehl, and Two Step Sisters – Velma Beechley and Velda Koehn.

Funeral Services will be held at the First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2018 with Steve Payne, Chris Gorman & Henry Gorman presiding.

Memorials may be made to the Park Lane Nursing Home in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas

Dorothy Ann McCarthy

Dorothy Ann McCarthy passed away on June 9, 2017, in Houston, Texas. Dorothy was born on March 13, 1944 in Russell, Kansas. She was the youngest of eight children born to Pauline Maier and Dietrich Albrecht.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Duane T. McCarthy of Houston, Texas; daughter, Kristi McCarthy of Arlington, Virginia; son, Daniel McCarthy and wife Amy, and much-adored granddaughters Mikaela, Anna, Danielle and Nora McCarthy all of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by her sisters, Ida Elliott of Hays, Kansas and Mable Sommerdorf of Napa, California and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy’s passions included traveling, cooking, teaching, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. She visisted over 150 countries and all seven continents. Her travels varied from sailing in the Greek Isles, trekking in Nepal, crossing the Atlantic on cruise ships and even spending time in Antarctica. She embraced life. Family and friends were treated to her superb cooking; she was always keen to try a new recipe. She taught at elementary schools in Newtown, Connecticut; Bonao, Dominican Republic; Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; Houston, Texas and on the island of Saipan. She was selected as a Master Teacher in Saudi Arabia, Teacher of the Year in Saipan and she was awarded the Crystal Apple Teacher of the Year Award in Houston in 1993.

Dorothy’s kindness, thoughtfulness, beautiful smile and giving personality drew people to her. She touched the lives of numerous people she met along the way of her adventurous life: family, many dear friends, fellow teachers, and countless students. Her life was a true testament to “living life”. Her journey began with a solid foundation from a small town in Kansas. She was a woman who could drive a tractor, bake a three layer cake or negotiate rug purchase in a foreign country. Along with her true companion husband, she lived a life filled with accomplishments, exploration, adventure and love. She will be dearly missed.

A Memorial service and burial of ashes will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Lutheran Cemetery in Natoma, Kansas. Rev. Michael Schmidt will be officiating.

Joe W. Yoxall

Phillipsburg resident Joe W. Yoxall passed away May 27, 2018 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 91. He was born Oct. 5, 1926 in Woodston, KS

Survivors include his sons, Jeff of Kensington and Barry of Phillipsburg; his daughter, Cheryl Biggs of Phillipsburg; 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 1 at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Lew VanDerWege officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Friends may sign the book from 9:00 to 9:00 Thursday at the funeral home.

Lodeska Marlene Lovin

Lodeska Marlene Lovin, 72, died peacefully on Sunday, May 27, 2018; at the Bonner Springs Nursing Center in Bonner Springs, KS. She had resided in the Kansas City area for several years to be near her sons Mikel and Kevin. Lodeska was born on April 30, 1946; and was the oldest child of the late Wilber and Lodeska (Darnell) Romeiser.

She is survived by her two sons Mikel Lovin and wife Amory and Kevin Lovin both of Kansas City, Kansas; a brother Doug Romeiser of Nashville, Tennesse; and a sister Becky Heckman of Stockton, KS. Lodeska was preceded in death by her husband Bill Lovin and son Alan Lovin.
Lodeska faced many challenges in life but continued to be happy and loving to the end.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2018 at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton, KS. Burial will follow in Stockton City Cemetery. Kenneth Wayne Parks

Kenneth Wayne Parks, 85, passed away Friday May 25, 2018, at Hays Medical Center. He was born July 4, 1932, at Miller, Ks the son of James and Elnora (Goldsmith) Parks.

Kenneth was a resident of Holyrood. He was a graduated from Holyrood High School and earned a bachelors and master’s degrees from Fort Hays State University, and numerous certificates in science and education throughout his 34-year career. Kenneth was a science teacher and administrator in Utica, Larned, Esbon, Montezuma, and Holyrood, culminating in his position with USD 328 and retirement in 1994.

Kenneth served his country honorably in the US Air Force during the Korean War as a jet mechanic. He was a member of St Paul’s United Church of Christ in Holyrood, past Master of Masonic Lodge 424, Claflin (Scottish Rite Salina), Shrine Club of Salina and Russell, Order of the Eastern Star, Lyons. Kenneth married Cecelia Tokoi, August 11, 1956 in Hays. She preceded him in death September 12, 1997.

Survivors include daughter Carol Parks and husband Dr. Carl Fischer of Leavenworth; son Michael

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday May 30, 2018 at the United Church of Christ in Holyrood with Pastor Debby Rain officiating. Burial will follow at St Paul’s Church of Christ Cemetery. Kathleen Kay ‘Kathy’ Ukele

Kathleen Kay “Kathy” Ukele, age 59, of Hays, Kansas a loving mother, wife and grandmother, passed away unexpectedly on May 26, 2018 while spending time with family and friends at the place she loved most, Wilson Lake.

Kathy was born on October 18, 1958 in Oberlin, Kansas to Earnest Keith and Imogene (Harold) Gallatin. She graduated from Decatur County High School in 1976. Kathy was a long-time office manager at Karst Water Well before graduating from Fort Hays State University in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She was the treatment director at Smoky Hill Foundation from 2001 – 2013 when she became the Executive Director.

Kathy enjoyed quilting, traveling to Nebraska to spend time with her sisters, cooking, spending time with her grandchildren and being at Wilson Lake.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Mel Karst of Hays; her children, Jason Ukele and wife Stephanie of Salina, Corey Ukele and wife Brandy of Salina, Dylan Karst of Hays, Ben Karst and wife Joan of Hays, Mark Karst and wife Nikki of Kansas City, Jon Karst of Big Sur, California and Clayton Karst of Mission, Kansas; two sisters, Debbie Macfee of Oberlin and Linda Jackson of Cortez, Colorado; nine grandchildren, Ike Ukele, Cooper Goodrow, Connor and Coltyn Ukele, Katrina and Kailey Delimont, Hendrix and Jaxon Karst and Cadence Karst all of whom she loved and adored with all her heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Connie Gallatin and Jo Marintzer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine St., Hays, KS 67601.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 PM – 8 PM and Thursday 9:30 AM until service time, all at the funeral chapel.

Former Almena resident Eileen Cramer passed away May 26, 2018 in Rice, MN at the age of 99. She was born Sept. 3, 1918, the daughter of Ralph & Jennie (Dailey) Dixon.

Survivors include her son, Ron of Fallbrook, CA; 3 daughters, Judy Whitney of Grand Rapids, MN, Bonnie Fox of Rice, MN and Patty Englert of Belton, MO; 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren & 4 great great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Sat. June 2 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Almena with Rev. Larry Danforth officiating.

Madeline Lela Schoenthaler

Madeline Lela Schoenthaler, age 94, of Ellis, Kansas passed away Friday, May 25, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society, Hays, Kansas. She was born June 17, 1923 in Ellis County, Kansas to John and Minnie (Schwab) Huck.

She graduated from Ellis High School in 1941 and from the Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, Kansas. On October 21, 1945 she married Raymond F. Schoenthaler. He preceded her in death on March 22, 2007.

Madeline was a homemaker and enjoyed flower gardening, cooking and baking especially her delicious pies. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church where she was very active in church activities including the quilting group. She was also a member of PEO.

She is survived by a son, Terry Schoenthaler and wife Pat of Ellis; a daughter-in-law, Linda Schoenthaler of Hays; a brother, Clayton Huck of Ellis; four grandchildren, Chad Schoenthaler and wife Kimberly of Mission Hills, Kansas, John T. Schoenthaler and wife Keriann of Gilroy, California, Scott Schoenthaler and wife Brianna of Salina, Kansas and Amy church and husband Bryan of Hays as well as twelve great grandchildren, Emma, Bode, Madison, Noah, Sophia, Jonah, Myja, Gabby, Dominic, Alyssa, Aydan and Anthony.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Lynn Schoenthaler; and a great granddaughter, Timberlynn.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church 106 E. 8th in Ellis. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday 5 PM – 8 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM and Wednesday 9 AM until service time all at Christ Lutheran Church.

Harriette M. Cronn

Harriette M. Cronn, 89 passed away May 25, 2018. She was born in Hays, Kansas on January 27, 1929 to Harry Gottlieb and Alma Pearl (Robinson) Klenk.

Harriette attended elementary school through eighth grade at Happy Hollow School in southern Graham County. She graduated from Trego Community High School in 1946. Harriette graduated from Fort Hays State College in 1951. She was a member of Kappa Phi and Sigma, Sigma, Sigma Sororities.

Harriette was united in marriage to Arden Lewis Cronn on June 17, 1950 in Kansas City, Kansas. After graduating from college, she taught school for one year in Norton, Kansas. She and Arden moved to the Klenk family farm in 1952. There she lived the remainder of her life as a wife, mother and homemaker. The family included six children.
Harriette was a member of Prairie Home United Methodist Church where she played the piano for Sunday church services until she was 84 years old. She was the pianist for Bible School and programs in which her children were involved during their childhoods. Harriette was also a member of GFWC Locust Club, FHSU Half Century Club and Big Creek Golf Club.

Harriette was preceded in death by her husband Arden October 18, 2015, parents and her sister, Darlene.
Those left to mourn Harriette include her children Paula (Antonia De La Guerra) Cronn, Salt Lake City, Utah; Barbara (Wayne) Roberts, Hays, Kansas; Harry (Amanda) Cronn, WaKeeney, Kansas; Catherine (Jay Abasolo) Cronn, Northglenn, Colorado; Susan (Michael) Carew, Thornton, Colorado; and Julie (Craig) Leiker, Roswell, Georgia. Twelve grandchildren: Brice (Krissi) Cronn; Elizabeth (Aaron) Jantz; Rebecca (Jay) Corwin; Evan (Rachel) Cronn; Haley (Jason) DaVee; Eriq Roberts; Stephanie (Shannon Gray) Roberts; Adam Carew; Jacob Carew; Sarah (Trevor Ballinger) Carew; Amber Leiker and fiancé Tyler McGlawn; Molly Leiker. Nine great grandchildren: Courtland; Jase; Emmalynn Cronn; Miller and Hudson Jantz; Mabyn and Kysen Corwin; Hadley and Eleanor Da Vee. Several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kathy Ukele

Kathy Ukele, age 59, of Hays, KS, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine St., Hays, KS 67601.

LeeAnne Emmons

LeeAnne Emmons, 67, of Russell, Kansas, died on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

LeeAnne was born on November 24, 1950, in Marion, Indiana, the daughter of Leon and Mary Ann (Sparks) Atkerson. At a young age she moved to the Russell area and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1969. She then attended Academy of Hair, in Salina, Kansas. LeeAnne and Kenny then moved to Brattleboro, Vermont where she met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Alfred E. Emmons on June 26, 1984 in Russell, Kansas. They then moved to Russell, Kansas where she worked as a secretary for Leon’s Tank Service for several years and then the family business Francis-Urban Tank Service for many years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell where she was the Nursery coordinator for several years until she was unable to climb the stairs and had to stop working with the little ones she enjoyed so much. She was also the Custodian for a couple years, she also worked as a cook for Russell High School. She enjoyed working with arts and crafts and collecting Noah’s ark items. She loved seashells and jewelry. She took a night class at Russell High School for Silversmith, which she enjoyed making different items. She prepared the Nativity pieces of clay for firing and glazing for years to be given away to the youth at church. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving family include her husband Alfred E. Emmons of the home, son Kenny L. Cain wife Melanie of Lucas, Kansas, daughter Amy Hoss and husband Cody of Russell, Kansas and son Robert D. Emmons and companion Kimberly Forest of Russell, Kansas; grandchildren Kevin Cain, Kendra Harp and Slayde Hoss and great grandchild Kinsley Harp, step grandchildren Brody, Blake, Kaylee Hoss. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service to celebrate LeeAnne’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas with Pastor Les Rye officiating. Cremation has been selected by the family and inurnment of the cremains will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Wednesday evening. Memorials may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church, Nursery Fund or to the Russell Playpark and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
