Calista Leigh Isbell

Calista Leigh Isbell, age 15, of Hays, Kansas passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2018, in Hays. She was born November 17, 2002, in Suixi, Guangdong China. Calista was adopted on May 24, 2004, by Jeanne Isbell, who became her loving and devoted mother.

Calista was a student at Hays High. She participated in softball, tennis, and karate. She enjoyed chess and started the Hays Middle School chess club. She was a vocalist and musician playing the clarinet, piano, and guitar. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed drawing.

She cherished her friends, especially Alexis White, who would spend the night filling the house with laughter long into the night. Singing and music were Calista’s passions. Her happiness could not be contained as she, along with a friend, won first place in the Hays High School talent show. She also earned a I rating for her clarinet solo at the State Music Festival and an excellence rating for her vocal solo. Listening to her play the piano at home was a joy for her mother.

She worked so hard at school, earning straight A+’s, and her teachers loved her attitude, helpfulness, and sense of humor. She aspired to be a pediatric oncologist and was considering colleges with Stanford being her first pick. Last summer she was invited to tour with the Kansas Ambassadors of Music to seven European countries singing the choir and playing in the band.

Calista loved her brothers and sisters. We will always remember her playful banter with Christopher whom she cherished. She considered being a family the most important part of life. She hoped as they grew up they would always stay connected.

She is survived by her mother, Jeanne Isbell of Hays; two sisters, Cori and Judith Isbell, and two brothers, Jesse and Christopher Isbell, all of Hays; uncles Scott Isbell (Carol) of San Juan Capistrano, CA, Rand Isbell (Vilma) of Canyon County, CA, and Dann Isbell (Jessica) of Taiwan; aunts Lynne Isbell of Davis, CA, and Leigh Isbell of Oberlin, KS, numerous cousins, and a very special family friend, Merlin Schroer of Hays. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Judith Isbell Miller, and family friend John Leyda of Oberlin, KS.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2018 with a memorial visitation starting at 2:30 p.m. all at the North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak Street, Hays, KS 67601.

Robert ‘Bob’ Schibi

Robert “Bob” Schibi, age 71, of Hays, Kansas passed away Friday, May 4, 2018 in Hays. He was born September 12, 1946 in Denver, Colorado to Henry and Fern (Miller) Schibi. He graduated from Rockhurst High School in Kansas City and Regis University in Denver. On July 10, 1971 he married Susan Soderblom at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. She preceded him in death October 31, 2002.

Bob was the owner of Field Abstract and Title Company in Hays where he was a title insurance agent and abstractor. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by his son, Eric Schibi and wife Kelly and their children Adam, Alison and Arin all of Hays and a brother, Frank Schibi of Phoenix, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Tom Schibi on Feb. 27, 2014 and a brother, John Schibi.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Monday, May 7, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday 4 PM-7 PM and Monday 9 AM – 9:30 AM at Brock’s – Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

A parish vigil service will be Sunday at 6 PM followed by a rosary service at 6:30 PM all at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice at Hays Medical Center, The Cancer Council of Ellis County or Masses.

Marlene Joan Newman

Marlene Joan Newman came into this world on September 30, 1952 to Ben and Sophie Hatfield in Brainard, Minnesota. She graduated from Truman High School in Truman, Minnesota with the Class of 1972. On July 31, 1987 she married Paul Newman. This sweet angel left this earth from Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas on April 18, 2018.

She loved fishing, bingo, kids, grandkids, her family, friends, crocheting, garage sales, and the open road on their motorcycle.

Marlene is survived by her husband Paul Newman of the home in Plainville. Two children by marriage William Newman and wife Lisa, and Mellissa Newman; granddaughter Starlett Peterson; three grandchildren by marriage Kylee Derby and husband Shem, Jevin Legleiter-Newman, and Christopher Newman; great-grandchildren Autum Williams, and Ryder Peterson; siblings Donald Hatfield, Lowell Hatfield and wife Emily, Gerald Hatfield and wife Ronda, Harold Hatfield and wife Darlene, Veirgie Hatfield and wife Dori, Eldon Hatfield and wife Barb, Betty Hatfield, Helen Rhea and husband Randy, Darlene Larson with Bill Snyder, Rose Hatfield, and Judy Hector; and many other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ben and Sophie Hatfield; siblings Alfred and Kathleen Hatfield, Deloris and Bob Jones, Ronald Hatfield, Ralph Hatfield, Carolann Hatfield, Arlene Hatfield, infant sister Margie at 14 months, and one other sibling. She also endured the loss of two daughters Starlett Ann Haynes and Melissa “Missy” Jo Wolfe.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday May 5, 2018 at the Nazarene Church in Plainville, KS. The family will be hosting a luncheon at the Plainville Senior Center following the service.

Charlotte Diane (Chronister) Hake

Charlotte Diane (Chronister) Hake passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas at the age of 64. She was born on December 17, 1953 in Pasadena, Texas to Elvis and Mildred Chronister. She graduated from high school and was united in marriage to Bill Hake. They were blessed with one son Shawn. She and Red Morel later were blessed with fraternal twins Rachelle and Ashley.

Charlotte was always a down-to-earth woman, with a happy and loving heart, and an easygoing spirit. She worked as a bank manager and loved dancing, painting, gardening, and cooking. She was also known to enjoy hitting her favorite fishing holes every now and then, and never passed up an opportunity to join in singing her favorite karaoke songs. But the times she loved the most was when she was with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Charlotte is survived by her mother Mildred Chronister of Fayetteville, GA; son Shawn Hake with Tatianna Smith of Austin, TX; daughters Ashley Desaire and husband Stephen of Palco, and Rachelle Eichman and husband Bryant of Palco; brother Don Chronister and wife Melody of Willis, TX; sister Melissa Crow and husband Andrew of Fayetteville, GA; five grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and nephews; and eight great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father Elvis Chronister, brother Randall Chronister, and sister Sherry Greenway.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Plainville. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date. June A. Dolezal

June A. Dolezal passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellsworth, Kansas at the age of 89. She was born on June 30, 1928 in Dorrance, Kansas to the late Andrew and Lea (Heinze) Feil. She grew up in the Wilson area and graduated from Wilson High School with the Class of 1946. On April 15, 1951 she was united in marriage to Alfred Dolezal in Wilson. They were blessed with three children, Susan, John, and Mary Beth.

June attended Brown Mackie Business School and worked at the Wilson State Bank for many years. However, she considered her first job to be organist at Immanuel Lutheran Church which she was a lifetime member and organist for 55 years. She liked to bowl, cook for her family, try new recipes, and loved to dance. But the greatest joy in her life was her family. No matter where they were going, or what they were doing, she and Alfred made sure they were having fun, and making the most of every opportunity together.

June is survived by her children Susan Davidson of Halstead, John Dolezal and wife Dawn of Wilson, and Mary Beth Ploutz and husband David of Dodge City; sisters-in-law Mary Feil of Wichita and Norma Jean Hodge of Salina; grandchildren Shelly Watkins, Lea Watkins, Deena Hamilton and husband Jordan, Emily Bewley and husband Ryan, Curtis Dolezal, and Colby Dolezal; great-grandchildren Ahnalea Watkins, Zandriel Watkins, James Hamilton, and Jessa Hamilton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Andrew and Lea Feil; brothers Dale Feil, Donald Feil, and Ronald Feil; and sister Wilma Daniels.

June worked hard but joyfully. As a loving, caring mother, her family was second only to God; and although she has now gone home to be with her Lord, the legacy of her love, laughter, and joy will live in our hearts and memories forever. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but the celebration of her life and memories will never be forgotten.

Bernard John Carsten

Bernard John Carsten, 93, went to be with his Lord April 30, 2018, at his daughter’s home in Raymore, MO.

He was born June 22, 1924, to Harvey and Mildred Carsten in Stockton, Kansas. Bernard graduated from Stockton High School, served in the Navy during WWII, and graduated from Ft. Hays State College.

He married Dorothy Davey August 10, 1947. Except for college and Navy years, he spent his life on the Carsten Family Century Farm. Until his son Terry’s death, he enjoyed farming together with him.

Bernard was a man of integrity and faith, living as an example to his family and community. He was involved with 4-H, Rooks County Fair Board, Gideons International, Lion’s Club, and other community organizations. From the late 60’s through the 70’s, he and Dorothy participated in leading Lay Witness Missions in the Midwest. He grew up as a member of Stockton United Methodist Church and in later years regularly attended Stockton Assembly of God Church.

Bernard enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He provided his grandchildren with hours of enjoyment, playing in the clubhouse (chicken shed), swinging on the barn’s rope swing, sitting at his feet in the combine, and driving the lawn tractor around the yard. He loved flipping his dentures at them, tickling their necks and giving them kisses. So Be It!
Bernard is survived by his daughter Cheryl Menzies and husband Tom of Raymore, MO, son Rod and wife Janie of Elkhart, IA, daughter-in-law Deb Carsten of Stockton, sister-in-law Ilene Proctor and husband Robert of El Dorado, 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 1 niece, and 2 nephews.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Alvin, wife Dorothy, an infant son and son Terry.

Rose Legleiter Pfannenstiel

Rose Legleiter Pfannenstiel, 102, earned her heavenly wings May 1, 2018 at Pleasant View Home in Inman, Kansas. A lifelong resident of the State of Kansas, she was born on December 18, 1915 in Liebenthal, Kansas. She was the daughter of Christian and Margaret Legleiter. She was a retired facility painter for Champion Petroleum throughout Kansas.

She was a former member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson, Kansas and also a former member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays, Kansas. She had also been a long standing member of the Sunflower Polka Club in Hays, Kansas. She was a master quilter and would donate quilts to the military for soldiers use in hospitals.

On August 9, 1937 she married Clarence Pfannenstiel in Hays, Kansas. After 65 years of marriage he preceded her in death on April 8, 2003.

She is survived by 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sons, Delane, Terry and Lonnie; 6 brothers and 4 sisters.

A gathering for friends and family will be held Sunday, May 6, 2018 from 2:00-5:00 pm at Old Mission – Heritage Funeral Home, 528 N. Main, Hutchinson, Kansas. A celebration of life will take place Monday, May 7, 2018 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Interment will take place Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 12:00 pm at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Pleasant View Home of Inman, Kansas or The Father’s House Church and left in care of the funeral home.

Paula S. Bixenman

November 12, 1964 – April 26, 2018

Paula Sue Doherty Bixenman, 53, of Colby, Kansas, passed away on April 24th, in Hays, Kansas.

A memorial service will be held at 2 P.M. on Friday, May 4th at Kershenbrock Funeral Chapel with Kirby Benisch of Celebration Community Church of Colby officiating. Burial will follow at Beulah Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kershenbrock Funeral Chapel.

Paula was born in Colby, Kansas to Glen and Wilma Doherty on November 12th, 1964. She studied at Colby Community College. She married David Bixenman in October 1990 in Colby and then moved to Elko, Nevada. Paula gave birth to David Michael Bixenman, Jr. on October 29th, 1992 in Salt Lake City, Utah. David Paul Bixenman was born June 25th, 1996 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Despite being four months premature and because of many prayers, David proved to be God’s miracle baby for Paula. Her son gave her life such purpose and meaning. Paula was active in her sister and brother-in-law’s church in Elko. Her love of God and family had been a main stay in her life.

Paula is preceded in death by her infant son David, father Glen Doherty, sister Barbara Lawrence, nephew Joshua Doherty, grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Doherty and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Carpenter.

Paula is survived by her son, David Bixenman, her mother Wilma Doherty Anderson, brothers Charles, Gary, and Joseph Doherty; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews who loved her.

The family of Paula wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Paula’s caregivers: Jacque Brooks, Kathy Mackey, Courtney Britton, and Terry Knox for all they did to help Paula in her home over the years. She was thankful for the many years this allowed her to be independent. To the nurses, doctors, staff, and volunteers of HaysMed, we can’t thank you enough for going above and beyond to provide great care and attention to Paula and her family. It was a great comfort and very appreciated.

Ronald Dale ‘Ron’ Temple

Ronald Dale “Ron” Temple passed away April 30, 2018, with his wife and youngest daughter, Tracey, by his side. He was a seven-year transplant recipient and battled health issues the last several years, facing every one with strength. Ron was born July 1, 1934, to Gerald and Marguerite (Mapes) Temple on their farm near Norcatur in Norton County.

Ron was reared on the family farm along with one brother, Don. He attended Long Branch country school through the eighth grade and Norcatur High School, graduating in 1951. Ron furthered his education at Fort Hays State College in Hays, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History for Secondary Education.

During his time in college, Ron met his future wife, Geraldine “Jerry” Peters. They were married on November 12, 1953, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. They resided in Hays while Ron finished his education. Over the years, he taught in Junction City, Norcatur, Selden and Leoville, starting his teaching career in 1959 and quitting to farm fulltime in 1969. Ron coached several basketball and football teams during those years, as well as girls’ volleyball, track, softball and baseball.

Ron and Jerry eventually made their home on a farm north of Norcatur, farming together for many years. In addition, Ron continued to teach and coach for a number of years. Ron and Jerry became the parents of four daughters and were also blessed with six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Ron was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Norton and National Farmers’ Association. He served on the Lincoln Township Board for 30 years, on the USD #294 School Board, as an EMT, and was a member of Cornerstone Theater.

Because of his love of history, Ron wrote two history books about the community of Norcatur. He also loved music and sang in a gospel group, Faith, Hope and Charity. He and Jerry enjoyed traveling overseas and to the Caribbean. Ron was a giant presence in this world and there is a void that his death leaves for those who love him.

He is survived by his wife, Jerry Temple of Norcatur; three daughters, Marcy Wyrens of Lincoln, NE, Suzanne Cahoj (Larry) of Atwood, and Tracey Hartzog (Scott) of Norcatur; son-in-law, Jerry Rhodes of Norcatur; brother, Don Temple (Janet) of Carson City, NV; six grandchildren: Seth Pearsoll, Simone Cahoj Elder (Levi), Marcus Cahoj, Corey Rhodes Grace (Ryan), Jessica Rhodes Williams (Tyler), and Megan Rhodes Amos (Justin); and 14 great-grandchildren: Noah, Ava, Hannah, Eleanor, Henry, Frances, and Abigail Grace; Caden, Tatum, and Paxon Williams; and Jackson, Kylah, Elijah, and Abraham Amos.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald & Marguerite Temple; and a daughter, Lisa Rhodes.

Bernard John Carsten

Bernard John Carsten, 93, went to be with his Lord April 30, 2018, at his daughter’s home in Raymore, MO.

Michael A. Leach

Michael A. Leach, age 78, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on February 29, 1940 in Rural Scott County, Kansas, the son of the late Ephriam D. & Irene Leona Lomax Leach of Scott City, Kansas. Michael Leach was the proud companion of two dogs and farmed a good portion of his life.

Michael attended school in Scott City, Kansas and graduated from Russell Springs, Kansas. After high school he attended Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS, Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas and graduated from Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas in Auto Mechanics and was always on schools honor roll. Michael also held down a job at Fairleigh Feedyard and then Crist Feedyard in Scott City, KS and held another job in Wichita, KS.

Michael was cared for in his later years by Linda Dunagan of Scott City, KS. The surviving family is very grateful and comforted in the knowledge of the care Linda and the Lucky Clover 4-H Members provided. Michael was a Lucky Clover 4-H Club Buddy.

Michael is survived by his sister Inez (Leach) Driskell her husband the late James L. Driskell of Taunton, MA; Michael’s nephews are the Pastor James A. Driskell and wife Margaret of York, PA; Donald Driskell and wife Kimberly of Taunton, MA; the late Walter Driskell and wife Leola of Myerstown, PA; the late Timothy Driskell of Brockton, MA; and State Trooper Jonathan Driskell and wife Patricia of South Hadley, MA. Michael is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces as well as grand-nephews and grand-nieces.

Funeral Services will be at the St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Scott City, Kansas at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2018 with Fr. Don Martin presiding.

Memorials IN LIEU OF FLOWERS can be made to the Michael Leach Memorial Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday and 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.

David Ray Blake

David Ray Blake, 77, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2018 at his home in Russell with his family by his side.

David was born November 18, 1940 in Augusta, Kansas, the son of Irwin and Esther Ila (Arnold) Blake.
During the first grade, David and his family moved to Russell where he grew up. He graduated from Russell High School.

David served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After his tour of duty, he returned to the Russell area.

David was united in marriage to Ruby Mohl in 1968 in Great Bend. They made their home in Russell. Ruby preceded him in death on September 18, 2007.

David has been a Farmer/Ranch most all of his life. He did some work in the oil patch and when he was younger he worked at the C.O. Mammals Grocery Store. He was a life member of the Russell American Legion Post. He also belonged to the Kansas Draft Horse Association, Russell County Saddle Club and the Russell Muzzle Loaders. He also was a volunteer fireman for Grant First District for over 39 years. He truly loved spending time with his horses, riding or driving them. He also enjoyed coyote hunting and every day he looked forward to eating breakfast with the guys at Meridy’s restaurant. .

David’s surviving family include his daughter, Leah M. Maupin of Russell, Kansas; brother, Donald Blake (Charlotte) of El Dorado, Kansas; sister, Joyce Scott (Bob) of Augusta, Kansas; and granddaughter, Shannon Maupin. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Ruby.

Celebration of David’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, May 4, 2018 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery where the Russell V.F.W. Post will conduct Military Rites. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

A memorial has been established with Kansas Draft Horse Association. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
