Raymond H. Becker

Raymond H. Becker, 70, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at his home in Russell.

Raymond was born on November 06, 1947, in Osborne, Kansas, the son of Matt H. and Louise (Meier) Becker. Raymond grew up in Osborne, Kansas on the family farm, and graduated from Osborne High School. He joined the United States Army in August 1968 and served in the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1971 and was discharged in July 1971. He moved to Russell, Kansas, in 1973. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Gloria J. (Thacker) Becker on January 20, 1979, in Hays, Kansas. He worked in the oil patch since 1973, and during that time he worked for Shields Oil for 10 years and also worked with Leon Huxman. He was a member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. He enjoyed wood working, 4 wheeling, hunting and fishing.

Surviving family include his daughter Kristy Finnegan-Frank (James Frank) and Step-daughter Shelly DeWitt (Jeff); step sons Chad Peterson and Jeromy Peterson, brothers Lawrence Becker (Deanna), John Becker (Lil) and Ed Becker (Sandy), sister Lucy William (Dan) many grandchildren, many great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gloria on May 10, 2007; brothers Herman and Adolph Becker and 2 twin grandsons.

A celebration of Raymond’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, May 02, 2018, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Tuesday, May 01, 2018 at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Tuesday evening. In lieu of Flowers memorials may be given to the Russell County Veterans Memorial or Hays Hospice and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Rita J. Cowles

Longtime Sharon Springs, Kansas, resident Rita J. Cowles, 78, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2018 at her home in Sharon Springs.

Rita was born on August 10, 1939 in Frankfort, Indiana to Harold C. and Hazel M. (Steen) Ashley.  She was one of two children. As a child, she grew up and attended school in Frankfort, and graduated from Frankfort High School in 1957.

On September 18, 1959, she married Marion Michael Cowles in Sharon Springs.  To this union, three children, Michael, Michele and Marc were born. She was a housewife and was involved with various activities and organizations throughout her life, including Order of Eastern Star and the Weskan Bible Church.  

Preceding her in death were her parents, Harold C. and Hazel M. Ashley, and her mother and father-in-law Helen J. Cowles and Marion Asa Cowles Jr.

She is survived by her husband Michael Cowles of the home in Sharon Springs, her three children; Michael W. Cowles and Debra D. Collins of Colby, KS, Michele (Joe) Noark of Ballwin, MO, and Marion Marc Cowles of Ness City, KS; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one brother William O. Ashley of Edinburgh, IN.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 30, 2018 at 10:00 AM MT at the Weskan Bible Church in Weskan with Pastor Tim Cress officiating.  Burial will follow in the Sharon Springs Cemetery, Sharon Springs, KS. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM MT at the Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.

Memorials are designated to the American Cancer Society or the Sharon Springs Public Library and may be left at the service or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

Coleta Elizabeth Haberman

Coleta Elizabeth Haberman, 91, passed away April 25, 2018, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born July 13, 1926, at La Crosse, to Joseph and Rosa (Herrman) Schafer. Coleta married Francis Joseph Haberman November 19, 1952, at Liebenthal.

Graduating from Sacred Heart High School, Wichita, and Fort Hays State University, Coleta had been a resident of Great Bend since 1961, moving from the Heizer area. She was a teacher for 34 years, starting her career at District #45, rural Barton County, continuing at Heizer School District, then retiring from Lincoln Elementary School, USD 428, in 1988. Coleta was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, Pilot Club, and Pi Kappa Pi Sorority. She enjoyed dancing, crossword puzzles, playing bridge, mission trips, and above all, time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include; husband, Francis Haberman, of the home; one son, David Haberman and wife Elaine of Hays; one daughter Debbie Tracy and husband Geoffrey of Great Bend; two sisters, Leola Gottschalk of Hays and Ann Dechant and husband Virgil of Leawood; six grandchildren, Audrey Rummel and husband Jeff, Joseph Haberman and wife Breanna Ellison, Kimberly Georgeson and husband Wesley, Jacob Haberman, Matthew Tracy and wife Letecia, and Spencer Tracy; and eleven great grandchildren, Nathan Rummel, Jesse McDougal, Jared Rummel, Jade Rummel, Jet Georgeson, Stella Georgeson, Whitley Georgeson, Aiden Tracy, Christopher Tracy, Carver Tracy, and Declan Tracy. Coleta was preceded in passing by one brother, Berthold Schafer; and two sisters, Rose Mary Simpson and Geraldine Schafer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2018, St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Don Bedore officiating. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, April 30, with an Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil with a D of I Rosary at 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorial funds have been established with Holy Family School Endowment Fund or KU Alzheimer’s Disease Center, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Janice E. Dyer

HOISINGTON — Janice E. Dyer, 73, died April 24, 2018, at Hays Medical Center. She was born October 23, 1944, in Glendale, California, the daughter of Ivan G. and Myra Ellen (Carlisle) Smith. Janice was a 1962 graduate of Hoisington High School.

On July 15, 1962, she married Gerald Arthur “Jerry” Dyer, in Hoisington. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1984.

She was a longtime resident of Hoisington and the Olmitz area.

Janice farmed for many years with her husband, on their farm near Olmitz. She even continued to farm for several more years after his death. Later she was a bus driver for Otis-Bison District School and was a daycare provider and a caregiver. She was a 4-H leader and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include; four children, Darin Dyer and wife Julie of Aurora, Nebraska, Michele Hitschmann and husband Jim of Hoisington, Stephanie Royer and husband Everett of Otis, and Melanie Urban and husband Ken of Loretta; brother, Rodney W. Smith of Great Bend; and 8 grandchildren, Sydney and Jackson Dyer, Ethan and Taylor Hitschmann, Renee and Sean Royer, and Kole and Kade Urban.

She was predeced in death by her parents, husband, an infant son, Grant Arthur Dyer, an infant sister, Karen Janene Smith, and sister, Tacy Janene Smith.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Don Fisher presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Monty Michael Mlinek

Monty Michael Mlinek, age 66, passed away  February 11, 2018, at the farm near Colyer, KS. He was born in WaKeeney, KS, on October 17, 1951, to Robert J. and Nona J. Mlinek.

He is survived by three brothers, Larry of Hays, KS, Randy of Lakeland, FL, and Jeffrey of Fayetville, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Monty was a Vietnam Veteran, lifetime farmer, and avid hunter who loved working with his dogs.

A graveside memorial and military service will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Union Cemetery, Colyer, KS. The family requests casual attire as that would be Monty’s preference.

Memorial contributions may be made directly to any U.S. Veteran’s support group.

Agnes Rozella (Chandler) Cooper

Agnes Rozella (Chandler) Cooper, 102, died April 20, 2018 at Phillipsburg, Kansas. She was born November 13, 1915 in Osborne County, Kansas to Charles N. and Emma (Stevens) Chandler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest and daughter-in-law, Patricia Gastrock Cooper.

She is survived by two sons, Anthony Bruce Cooper, Topeka, KS, and companion Jane Golub, Stilwell, KS, and Brace Cooper and wife Linda, Lenexa, KS; her daughter, Lesley Schonthaler and husband Lee, Zurich, KS; 6 grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. The Family will conduct a Memorial Service April 30, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., at the United Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg, KS with Pastor Chris Davis officiating. Inurnment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, KS after the service. Memorial contributions may be given to the United Presbyterian Church c/o Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel. P.O. Norma Lee Acheson

Norma Lee Acheson, 84, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, April 08, 2018, at her home in Russell, Kansas.

Norma was born on December 10, 1933, in the Russell County, Kansas, area the daughter of William and Margaret (Reddig) Kuntzsch. Norma grew up in Russell county and attended local county schools and lived most of her life in Russell. She was married to Alvin LeRoy Acheson, Sr. in October 1950 in Russell, Kansas. From this union Norma and Alvin raised 5 sons, Alvin, Jr., Rob, Terry, Danny and Don. Norma and Alvin did not remain married but she continued to live an active life and made raising her boys a fulltime job. She worked in retail sales at Duckwalls and Stop 2 Shop. She enjoyed her morning coffee, fishing and spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed spending time with grandkids and great grandkids.

Surviving family include her sons Terry Acheson (Peggy L.) and Danny Acheson (Peggy E.) all of Salina, Kansas and Don Acheson of Gorham, Kansas; brothers Billy Kuntzsch (Mary) of Bunker Hill, Kansas, Kenny Kuntzsch (Linda) of Russell, Kansas, Jim Kuntzsch (Joyce) of Dorrance, Kansas and Dennis Kuntzsch (Sheryl) of Palco, Kansas; many grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, ex-husband Alvin LeRoy Acheson, Sr., sons Alvin Acheson, Jr. and Rob Acheson; sisters Patsy Braun, Peggy Hickens and Nancy Wallace.

A graveside service to celebrate Norma’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, May 05, 2018, at the Bunker Hill Cemetery in Bunker Hill, Kansas. Cremation has been selected by the family and inurnment will follow the graveside services. Family will greet guests before and after the service at the cemetery. Jim Selfridge

Dighton- Jim Selfridge, 84, died on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born on February 15, 1934 in Lane County the son of Archie J. & Virginia Mae (Hutchins) Selfridge. He married Joanne Fullmer on February 11, 1951 at Dighton.

Jim graduated from Dighton High School with the Class of 1951. He was a lifelong farmer-stockman in Lane County. He especially enjoyed building and engineering things on the farm. He was a pilot for many years. He and his wife have spent winters in Arizona and South Texas for 30 years. Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton, the NRA, Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association, Experimental Aircraft Association and had held positions in the Kansas Livestock Association. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Brother- Gilbert Selfridge & Sister- Sue Ann Selfridge.

Survivors are his Wife- Joanne Selfridge of the Home, Son- Dennis Selfridge of Dighton, 4 Daughters- Debbie (Ken) Stormont of Phillipsburg, Denise (Mark) Callender of Dighton, Deanne (Neal) Stanley of Dighton & Delinda (Gerald) Walker of Dighton, Grandchildren- Nathan (Sumar) Stormont, Kelsi Birney, Jeremy Shull ( Sal Settineri) Sam Callender, Megan (Joss) Briggs, Annie Cizerle, Adam (Amber) Stanley, Will Stanley, Jesse (Jenn) Bever, Danny (Heather) Bever & Tyler Walker, Great-Grandchildren- Matty , Kendall , Joslyn, Dillon, Jordynn, Brooke, Taylor Aubrey, Avery, Mia, Breanna, Onesti, Presley, Kamryn, Alex, Peyton & Kinley. 2 Sisters- Olive (Thiel) Bloom of Wichita & Glenda (Allen) Roberts of Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday at United Methodist Church in Dighton with Rev Berniece Ludlum officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
