Lon Ray Borell

Utica- Lon Ray Borell, 57, died on Friday, March 30, 2018 at his home in Utica. He was born on June 28, 1960 at Garden City the son of Loren E. & Ruth Marie (Frimmel) Borell. He married Linda Ann Muffitt Schaben on June 6, 1980. He later married Vicky Lynn Adams Yates on November 29, 1986 in Lane County.

Lon Ray grew up in Lane County and attended Shields Grade School and graduated from Healy High School in 1978. He worked for Farmers Co-Op in Dighton for 5 years before returning to the family farm. While farming he also worked the wet corn grinding for DKS Dozing and Wick Grain. While continuing to farm he and his wife opened Vic’s Short Branch Saloon in Utica in 1999 and he has been running it since 2008. He was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church in Dighton. He was preceded in death by his Father.

Edna M. Powell

Phillipsburg resident Edna M. Powell passed away, Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg at the age of 96.

She was born July 18, 1921 in Phillips County, KS the daughter of Frank & Maude (King) Hall. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, and infant son, Donald D. and her husband, Doren W.

Survivors include her 2 sons, Dwight Powell & wife, Janice of Salina and Denny Powell & wife, Connie of Bel Aire, KS; a daughter, Denice Rahjes & husband, Robert of Agra; and 7 grandchildren, Christi Reid (Brad), Scott Powell (Casie), Todd Powell (Trina), Debbie Beam (Jared), Maurica Bruning (Troy), Kimberly Frahm (Tad) and Jennifer Mendenhall (Brad), and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2018 at the Church of God, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Monte Brunner officiating. A private burial at West Cedar Cemetery will be held prior to the service.

Mrs. Powell will lie in state from Noon until 9 p.m. Thursday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, where the family will greet friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Mary Lou Rome

Mary Lou Rome, age 70, of Victoria, Kansas died Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. She was born on August 11, 1947, in Hays to Joseph M. and Albina (Kuhn) Rome.

She worked at St. John’s Rest Home of Victoria from 1981 to 2012 and then transferred to Via Christi Village in Hays. She retired in September of 2016 after 35 years. Mary Lou, had a great love and loyalty to the residents she served. Likewise, the residents were comforted by her presence and compassion. She was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, St. Fidelis Christian Mothers/Altar Society, an extra Ordinary Minister and a Greeter at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, a Herzogfest Committee Member and a Victoria Alumni Association Newsletter Committee Member. She was a 1965 graduate of Victoria High School. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards and baking goodies for her family and friends.

Survivors include two sisters, Rita M. Gross and Marge Rome, both of Victoria; one niece, Janet K. Trombley and husband, Don, Newtown, PA; two nephews, Bob Gross, Victoria and Mike Gross and wife, Virginia, Shawnee, KS; four great nephews, Bret Gross and wife, Kelsey, Overland Park, KS; Ryan Trombley, Notre Dame, IN; Sam Gross, New York, NY and Will Gross, Shawnee, KS; one great niece, Lauren Smith and husband, Bryan, Littleton, CO; and one great great niece, Gwen Renee Gross, Overland Park, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother-in-law, Don F. Gross; and two infant brothers.

Services are at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 7, 2018, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas. Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria.

A vigil service will be at 6:00 P.M. Friday, followed by a Christian Mothers rosary with the Class of 1965 joining at 6:30 P.M. Friday, both at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, 412 Main Street, Victoria, Kansas 67671.

Visitation is from 5:30 to 8:30 P.M. Friday and from 9:00 to 10:45 A.M. Saturday, all at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, Victoria.

Dr. Weldon Flay Zenger

Dr. Weldon Flay Zenger, 84, died Friday, March 30, 2018 at Evergreen Care Community, Olathe, Kansas.

He was born December 15, 1933 on a farm near Haddam, Kansas, the youngest of seven sons born to John Walter and Stella M. (Smith) Zenger. Weldon attended rural and Haddam public schools. He graduated from Fairbury Junior College, Fairbury, Nebraska with a teaching certificate in 1953, received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Emporia State University in 1959 and 1966; and a Doctor of Education from the University of Kansas in 1970. Dr. Zenger spent his entire life, except for two years serving in the U.S. Army, in education at various levels.

He began his teaching and coaching career in the Hanover and Washington public schools in 1953, taught in the Salina public schools during the 1960s and was a Professor of Education at Fort Hays State University for twenty-seven years from 1970 until retiring in 1997. In retirement, Weldon became an Adjunct Professor Emeritus conducting educational research at Kansas State University until 2006.

On May 27, 1956, he married Sharon K. Winters in Glasco, Kansas. She also became a Professor of Education, and with Weldon researched and wrote educational materials. Drs. Weldon and Sharon Zenger co-authored eight educational books and thirty articles in professional educational journals. Weldon was a member of numerous professional associations serving in various offices and receiving many honors and awards. Some of these included being President of the Salina City Teachers Association and the Kansas Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Also, he was honored with the President’s Distinguished Scholar Award at Fort Hays University, selected as the Outstanding Curriculum Leader of Kansas and given the distinguished Alumnus Award of Southeast Nebraska Community College.

Weldon was active in church work, often teaching Sunday school and serving on the local church board, and for many years was a member of the Board of Trustees for Calvary Bible College and Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. At the time of his death he was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Manhattan, Kansas. Dr. Weldon Zenger will be forever remembered by his wife Dr. Sharon Zenger of the home; daughter Shannon Myers and husband Kevan of Prairie Village, Kansas and son Dr. Sheahon Zenger and wife Pam of Lawrence, Kansas;

Five grandchildren, Collin Myers, Houston, TX, Camron Myers, Prairie Village, Luke, Abby and Jacob Zenger, Lawrence; sister-in-law Dorothy Zenger-Cox, Cuba; many nieces and nephews, colleagues and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Stella; son Sheldon; and brothers Walter, Jr., Wendell, Wade, Wesley, Winfed, and Warren.

Viewing will be Sunday 1:00pm to 6:00pm at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral services will be 12:00 Noon Monday, April 9, 2018 at the United Methodist Church, Haddam, Kansas. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Haddam City Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the family for an Educational Scholarship Fund at Ft. Hays State University for a rural Kansas student majoring in education. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas has been entrusted with these arrangements.

Family will not be present at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon. They will be present at the church to greet you prior to the service.

Dr. Robert ‘Bob’ James Crowley

Dr. Robert “Bob” James Crowley, 89, Professor Emeritus of Human Development Counseling, died peacefully surrounded by family on March 17, 2018 at Concordia Village in Springfield, IL.

Bob was born in South Boston, MA on January 28, 1929, the son of Robert J. and Theresa Crowley. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Elizabeth (VanTol) and two sons, Dr. Timothy and wife Ann Crowley of Hays, KS, and Andrew and wife Kathryn of Oak Park, IL. Also survived by five grandchildren, Alexander and Samuel of Lincoln, NE, Ethan, Emory, and Caiden of Oak Park, and one sister Margaret of Florida. Many in-laws, nephews, and nieces survive. His parents, one brother, Paul and one brother-in-law Joawn, preceded him in death.

After graduating from Boston Latin School (1946), Bob received his A.B. from Boston College (1950). He volunteered for the US Army and served in the Korean War. He completed his basic training in the Signal Corps at White Sands Proving Grounds, NM, and his OCS at Fort Monmouth, NJ, where he earned his commission as 2nd Lieutenant. Bob served as a liaison officer with the Republic of Korea Army in the 85th Signal Repair Company. Bob was honorably discharged from active service as a 2nd Lt. in 1953 and from the Army Reserves as a Captain in 1966.

Returning to Boston, Bob earned a M.A. in Teaching from Harvard University Graduate School in 1955. He moved to Jackson, MI, where he was employed as a teacher and principal in elementary schools. Working as a research associate, Bob earned a Ph. D. from the University of Michigan in 1966. He worked at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY, from 1967-70.

Bob was a charter member of the Sangamon State faculty in 1970. He belonged to many professional academic organizations, and retired from the University of Illinois Springfield in 2000 after 30 years of service as Professor in the Human Development Counseling program. Bob was proud of his graduate students’ accomplishments and his contributions to the internationalization of the university. He served as an exchange professor at Shanghai Normal University for three semesters. Bob was also especially proud of his work in YMCA youth soccer and leadership of Illinois Youth Symphony in their early years. He enjoyed singing in several choral groups, taking group piano lessons at LLCC, and rooting for the Chicago Cubs.

Cremation rites were accorded by Bisch Funeral Home, Springfield, and he was interred at Camp Butler National Cemetery. A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 10:30 am in Concordia Village Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to UIS Robert Crowley Scholarship Fund or to organization of the donor’s choice.

Clinton ‘Sonny’ Davies Sr.

Clinton “Sonny” Davies Sr., 92 died April 2, 2018 in Manhattan, KS.

He was born on October 16, 1925 in Milford, KS, the son of James and Mabel (Schnell) Davies. Sonny married Marvis Hess on April 1, 1944. They made their home in Clay Center. Sonny worked for the Clay Center Concrete and Block Plant and Hankemer Concrete for over 50 years. He also delivered the Clay Center Dispatch for several years.

Marvis preceded him in death on January 20, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his parents; son, Jerry Davies; 4 brothers and 3 sisters

Richard Dean Krug

Richard Dean Krug, 71, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, April 01, 2018, at the Russell Regional Hospital. He went out with his boots on.

Richard was born on October 31, 1946, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Harvey Dean and Mittie Lavene (Ashley) Krug. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1964. After high school he graduated from Kansas State University in 1969, with a BS in Animal Science. He was united in marriage to Susan Louise Marlatt on August 16, 1969, and from this union they were blessed with two sons Michael Dean and Jason Charles. He was drafted into the United States Army and served in Vietnam as a member of the 595th Military Police Company.

He ran Krug’s Welding and Repair in Russell from 1974 to 1994. He raised cattle on the family farm and loved working with his cows. He also worked as a part-time deputy for the Russell County Sheriff’s Department. He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. He was also a lifetime member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. He enjoyed KSU Football, driving his 57 Chevy, listening to the Rock ’n’ Roll of the 50’s and 60’s, playing his Ludwig Drums, and spending time with his dogs. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family

Surviving family include his wife of 48 years Susan of the home, son Michael Dean Krug (Carrie) of Buda, Texas and Jason Charles Krug (Sara) of Russell, Kansas, sister Marlene Katherine. Mighell (Jim) of Russell, Kansas; 5 grandchildren Charles Frederick Krug, Alex Raymond. Krug, Cade Richard Krug, Zane Chad Krug and Cash Dean.Krug and his niece Rayna’ Amelia Tonne (Travis). He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service to celebrate Richard’s life will be held at 3 P.M. on Saturday, April 07, 2018, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Roger Dennis Officiating. Cremation has been selected by the family and services will conclude at the church. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials be given to the ROAR V.F.W. Joyce J. Banbury, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, April 03, 2018, at her home in Russell.

Rae Ellen D. (Strecker) Smith Pfeifer

Rae Ellen D. (Strecker) Smith Pfeifer, 80, of Olathe, KS, passed away on Sunday, April 01, 2018 in Olathe, Kansas. She was born March 5, 1938, on the family farm of her grandparents, Emanuel and Ida (Ochs) Karst, southwest of Russell, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward August and Alverda (Karst) Strecker Mortimer.

Rae’s father, Eddie was killed in an oilfield accident in l950, so she and her sister Mavis had to help support their family. Rae worked at the Dream and Mecca movie theaters, the City Dairy, and R.C Williams Trucking Company doing office work during her high school years.

Rae graduated from Russell High School in 1956. She married Denton Smith in 1957. From that union came three sons: Dirk, Derek and Dustin. Rae and Denton later divorced.

She worked for the federal government at Great Lakes Naval Training Base in Illinois, and also at Kansas State University and Oklahoma State University. From 1971 to May of 2000, she was secretary to two presidents: Dr. Gerald W. Tomanek and Dr. Edward H. Hammond, at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

In May of 2000, Rae retired after 29 years at FHSU. In August she married Herbert Pfeifer and moved to Olathe, Kansas, where they lived for l8 years. They spent time traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, California, North Carolina, Washington, D.C. and Florida to be with family.

Rae is survived by her husband Herb, her three sons; Major General Dirk D. Smith and his wife, Mary, of Washington, DC; Derek Edward Smith and wife, Karen, of Charlotte, NC; and Dustin D. Smith and wife, Kristi, of San Francisco, CA; and a sister, Mavis Kingsley of Hays, KS.

Rae valued her family above all else. She said: “They are the greatest gifts I have ever been given.” She had eight grandchildren: Kaycee, Lt. Garret, Jared, Khaner, Dawson, Deegan, Justin and Ruby Dae. She had one great-granddaughter, Kaeva, and one great-grandson, Levi. She had two stepchildren, five step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Rae Ellen’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, April 06, 2018, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be from 2 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, April 05, 2018, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Thursday evening. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to FHSU Foundation, Rae Ellen (Smith) Pfeifer Graphic Design Scholarship and can be sent in care of the mortuary. Frances E. Eichman

Frances E. Eichman, age 90, former Palco, Kansas resident, died Sunday, April 1, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays Care Center. She was born February 22, 1928, in Hays, Kansas, to James L. and Anna A. Joy. She married Cleo I. Eichman on May 25, 1949, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in rural Hays. He preceded her in death on July 7, 2003.

She was a cashier at the First National Bank at Palco, for several years, and then a homemaker, spending her life in Palco until moving to Hays in 2007. She was a Girl Scout Leader and a 4-H Club Leader for many years. She attended St. Michael’s Episcopal and was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Altar Guild and served on the church board. She served on the PECUSA Camp staff and board. She served on the Palco library board and started the Palco Story Hour Program. She served on the Embers Housing Board at Palco and a member of the Bogue American Legion Auxiliary serving as Historian.

Survivors include, one son, David Eichman and wife, Sheila, Hays, KS; two daughters, Tabetha Schraeder and husband, Robert, Hutchinson, KS; Marlene Pfeifer, Colby, KS; six grandchildren, Sierra Eichman and Derek Eichman, Sarah Mattson (Paul), Karen Beaudet (Joe), Preston Schraeder and fiancé (Sherree), Angila Pfeifer; four great grandchildren, Madelyn Beaudet, Trinity Pfeifer, Wesley Stegeman, Brielle Britton; one sister, Norma Gagnon, Lawrence, KS; two sisters-in-law, Ellenora Meyer and husband, Truman, Newton, KS; Betty Jean Kay, Portland, OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Cecil Joy; two sisters, Helen Joy and Thelma Eichman.

Services are at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 5, 2018, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Hays, Kansas. Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, at the Pleasanview Cemetery at Palco, Kansas.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas and from 9:00 to 10:00 A. M. Thursday, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church.
