Marcella Drewes Otteson

Marcella Drewes Otteson passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018 at the age of 99 1/2 at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on a farm near Rolla, North Dakota on September 19, 1918, the daughter of Diedrich and Martha Freier Drewes.

Marcella attended Rolla High School graduating in 1936 as valedictorian. After graduation, she attended Dakota Business College where she learned secretarial skills and flourish handwriting. She continued to use flourish writing for high school diplomas, awards and graduation certificates for many in the area.

She married Harold R. Otteson in 1945 in Roulette, North Dakota. They moved to Scott City shortly after their marriage. In 1949 their son Gary Richard Otteson was born. In February, 1992 Harold was in a serious car accident and passed away from his injuries at St. Francis Regional Medical center in Wichita, KS.

Harold, Marcella and Gary joined the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City. Marcella continued to attend Holly Cross services while in Park Lane.

Marcella worked at various business firms including ASC in Rolla, North Dakota and Schiller Photographic Co. in St. Louis, Missouri. For ten years in the 1960’s, she as a secretary at Century Refinery. After that she was Scott County Treasurer for 11 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents Martha M. (Freier) and Dietrich J. Drewes. Also, her sister Margaret Nelson and her brothers Walter Drewes and Henry Drewes.

Surviving relatives include her son Gary Otteson and his wife Ginny Otteson of Midway, Utah. She also leaves behind nephews John Drewes and Terry Nelson and a niece Ellen Drewes-Stoen.

Funeral Services will be at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City, Kansas at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2018 with Pastor Warren Prochnow presiding.

Memorials In Lieu of Flowers can be made to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Freda Rose (Queen) Hunt

Freda Rose (Queen) Hunt passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida at the age of 77. She was born on March 22, 1941 on a farm in Thomas County, Kansas to the late Herbert A. and Lillian M. (Kleymann) Queen. She grew up in the Grainfield, Kansas area graduating from Grainfield High School with the Class of 1959. She went on to earn her Associate of Arts Degree from Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas in 1976, and then completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology, graduating Suma Cum Laude from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas in 1978.

After completing her college education, Freda began working as an Information and Referral Specialist for Northwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging from which she eventually retired. A strong hardworking single mother, she was always involved in her children’s activities including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League Ball, Kid’s Wrestling, and most especially 4-H. She was a 4-H Club Leader, Project Leader, and Assistant County Club Leader. She also spent many years participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program helping people file their income taxes. She was not only proud of her own work and career, but was even more proud of her children and their accomplishments, particularly of the fact that three of her children also earned their four year college degrees.

She was preceded in death by her parents Herbert and Lillian Queen, step-mother Evelyn (May) Queen, brothers John Queen and Nickolaus “Nick” May, and great-granddaughter Amelia Kate Jacobson.

The 4‑H Pledge says, “I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.” Freda not only lived these values, but passed them on to her children and grandchildren. She leaves a legacy of strong independence mixed with love and compassion for family, friends, and neighbors that will live forever in the generations that follow her.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home in Hoxie. Burial will follow at the Grainfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00pm on Saturday at the funeral home.

Harold Arthur Dick

Harold Arthur Dick, 83, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, February 11, 2018, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Harold was born on April 08, 1934, in Lucas, Kansas, the son of Arthur Michael and Edith Mae (Thacker) Dick. He grew up in Lucas and graduated from Lucas High School in 1952. He worked for RC Williams as a truck driver. He also formerly worked for Koch Industries and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was a member of St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell. He was also a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a 4th degree Past Faithful Navigator. He enjoyed traveling and riding his motorcycle.

Surviving family include his daughter Jeanine Innes (John) of Kansas City, Kansas; sons Michael Dick (Kathy) and Kevin Dick all of Russell, Kansas; daughters Tina Langerman (Larry) of Wilson, Kansas and Mary Saryerwinnie (Dennis) of Arizona and many grandchildren.

A memorial graveside service to celebrate Harold’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, April 09, 2018, at the Lucas Cemetery in Lucas, Kansas. Visitation will be 1 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Sunday, April 08, 2018, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Sunday evening Memorials can be given to St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church or Toys For Tots and sent in care of the mortuary. Shawn Robb

It is with great sadness that the family of Shawn Robb announces his passing on March 29, 2018, at the age of 40 years.

Shawn will be remembered as a loving son to his parents, Pauline and Stanley Robb of Agra, KS. He is also survived by his wife, Kimberly Arnhold-Robb of Wichita, KS; his sister, Audra Robb of Dallas, TX; his grandparents, Dolores Robb of Loveland, CO,; and Vilta Merrifield of Phillipsburg, KS. He will also be lovely remembered by his mother-in-law, Norma Arnhold of Hays, KS; his brother-in-law Jeff and wife Amy Arnhold of Munjor, KS; and sister-in law, Jody and husband Darren Butler of Auburn, NE; and Larissa Arnhold and her two children of Leavenworth, KS.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Karl Lewis Robb Jr. and Donald Mirvin Haskett; and great grandparents, Karl Lewis Robb Sr., Laurel Peterson Robb, and Elmer and Viola Neeley Johnson.

Growing up, Shawn enjoyed participating in cub scouts, playing on the farm with his sister and cousins, riding bikes, and playing sports with his friends. Shawn is also an alumnus of Phillipsburg High School (PHS) with the class of 1996. He was a part of many organizations while at PHS including band, football, and basketball. He also attended Fort Hays State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 2002. While at Fort Hays State University, he was one of the founders of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Chapter. He also received his Master’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences/Liberal Studies in 2005. He married Kimberly Arnhold on July 4, 2015 at the Berthoud First United Methodist Church in Berthoud, CO.

He worked at Tiger Financial as a Financial and Market Analyst in Wichita, KS. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, BBQing, cooking, and swimming.

A Memorial Service in memory of Shawn will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., at Oliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd St, Phillipsburg, KS 67661, with Pastor Emily Blank officiating from the United Church of Kensington, KS. A reception will follow at the same location.

Memorial donations in memory of Shawn may also be made to the American Heart Association or the Agra Lake and Park. Flowers are also welcomed.

Darlene Adele Edwards

Darlene Adele Edwards was born August 4, 1933 to Laura (Barclay) and J.T. Edwards in Fowler, Kansas. She lived in Fowler for 13 years with her Grandparents, Tom and Mary Barclay. Darlene moved to Quinter with her mother and graduated from Quinter High School in 1951.

Darlene married Dale Redmond on September 9, 1951 in the Quinter Church of the Brethren, where she remained an active member. Darlene worked for Max A. Campbell, Attorney at Law. While Dale was in the service, she worked at the Air Force ROTC at Kansas State University. After Dale’s discharge they moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where they were blessed with their daughter Gina in 1956. They decided city living was not for them and returned to Quinter in May 1958, later that year they were blessed with their second daughter Joni. Darlene started working for Drs. Gunter & Hiesterman in November 1962 as a medical assistant, bookkeeper and Business Manager until she retired in 1987.

Staying busy was not a problem for Darlene. She belonged to Kansas Medical Assistants Association, Valhalla Club, Church Choir and Women’s Fellowship group, she sang in choir, sang in a number of musicals the Prairie Community Theater performed, played hand bells, was a member of the Jay Johnson Public Library Board as Treasurer, served as a church Deacon for many years and loved her church Quilting group. After she retired she learned to quilt and finished many projects her mother and grandmother had started. She sewed a quilt for each grandchild, learned to master pie making, and babysat for her grandchildren. She had a great passion for flowers, and for following her grandkids around in events they participated in.

Darlene passed away Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Hays Medical Center, Hays Kansas.

She is survived by her husband Dale of 66 years; two daughters, Gina (Wendall) Hargitt, and Joni (Kurt) Kerns, all of Quinter; grandchildren, Shannon Hargitt (Marlayna) of Wakeeney, Patrick (Heather) Hargitt, Amber Hargitt, Brandon Kerns and Hailey Kerns, all of Quinter; great grandchildren Kale & Kinley Hargitt and Asher Rockhold, all of Quinter, and Bo Schoenberger of Wakeeney; brother, Ron Wertz (Susie) of Arlington, Texas and her beloved dog, Daisy. She is preceded in death by her mother, Laura and stepfather, George Wertz and an infant half brother.

In every heart she touched, in every life she changed, in every thought she inspired, Her love lives on. We celebrate the wife, the woman, the mother, the grandmother she was.

Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the Church of the Brethren, Quinter. Burial will be in the Baker Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 at the funeral home in Quinter.

Kermit K. Welch

Kermit K. Welch, 83, of Gardner, passed away at Olathe Medical Center just before midnight on March 31, 2018, after a brief illness. Cremation. Kermit was born April 13, 1934 in Great Bend, KS, the 3rd child and second son of Clarence and Ethel Irene (Unruh) Welch. The family lived in various towns in central and western Kansas but Kermit ultimately graduated from Hays High School in 1952. He married Carol A Smith on December 28, 1957, having met on a blind date. He served his country for 2 years in the U.S. Army in peacetime in the 1950s and later earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas. He accepted a teaching position prompting a move to Gardner in 1961. Kermit taught high school math in the same classroom for 32 years, walking across the street to the school from his home on Mulberry Street and retiring in 1993. One of his greatest legacies was starting the girls’ and boys’ tennis programs at GEHS. He was a member of the GEHS Athletic Hall of Fame, the Kansas Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame and was a 2-time Kansas Tennis Coach of the Year. He took up golf later in life along with Carol. He was a passionate fan of KU basketball and a loyal follower of the Brooklyn (later Los Angeles) Dodgers since 1947. He served as an elder at Gardner First Presbyterian Church, among many other roles and later in life remained active as a part-time bookkeeper for the church. His honesty, intelligence, compassion, integrity and work ethic were obvious to all who knew him. His sense of humor is best exemplified by the many “Kerm Welch-isms”, some of which have reached near legendary status.

Kermit was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carol, his brother Jerome “Jerry” Welch and his sister Joyce England. He is survived by his children, Julie Highfill of Gardner, Mark Welch of Gardner, and Paul “Dean” and Kala Welch of Overland Park; grandchildren David Highfill Jr (Allison) of Leawood, Ryan Highfill (Becca) of Overland Park, Jared Highfill and Lauren Highfill of Gardner, Alexandra Welch of Merriam, and Samuel and Abigail Welch, both of Overland Park; one brother, Lauren Welch of Wichita, and one great-grandson, Griffin Highfill whom Kermit was blessed to see arrive just 5 months before his passing.

Esther Corzatt

Esther Corzatt, age 87, of Hays, Kansas, died Sunday, April 1, 2018, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas. She was born July 11, 1930, in West Virginia, to Dr. Frank and Emily Frances (Riggs) Harkleroad. She married Keith Edward Corzatt in 1969, at Amarillo, Texas. He preceded her in death on November 2, 1997.

She lived in Amarillo, Texas, for six years, in New Almelo, Texas, for 12 years and then moved to Hays in 1995. She was a kindergarten teacher for a number of years and earned four Master’s in English, Music, Science and Fine Arts. She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, the Perpetual Eucharist Adoration, Fort Hays University Senior Companion Program and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Morrison, LaCrosse, KS; Theresa Harris and husband, Joe, Ford, KS; Emily Teel and husband, Jerry, Hays, KS; one daughter-in-law, Misty Corzatt, Fayetteville, AR; one step son, Bill Corzatt, Stronghurst, IL; one step daughter, Angela Meyers, Media, IL; eight grandchildren, Angela Patton, Amber Klassen (Johnny), Nikki Probasco (Jon), Robert Cressler (Suzanne), Preston Cressler (Christine), Taylor Teel, Calea Corzatt, Christopher Corzatt; and 15 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parent; her husband; one son, Frank Corzatt; one step son, Ronald Corzatt; one brother, Lawrence, Harkleroad; one sister, Mary Emily Smith.

Services are 2:00 P.M. Friday, April 6, 2018, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 East 13th Street, Hays, Kansas. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

Frances E. Eichman

Frances E. Eichman, age 90, former Palco, Kansas resident, died Sunday, April 1, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays Care Center.

She was born February 22, 1928, in Hays, Kansas, to James L. and Anna A. Joy.

She married Cleo I. Eichman on May 25, 1949, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in rural Hays. He preceded her in death on July 7, 2003.

She was a cashier at the First National Bank at Palco, for several years, and then a homemaker, spending her life in Palco until moving to Hays in 2007. She was a Girl Scout Leader and a 4-H Club Leader for many years. She attended St. Michael’s Episcopal and was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Altar Guild and served on the church board. She served on the PECUSA Camp staff and board. She served on the Palco library board and started the Palco Story Hour Program. She served on the Embers Housing Board at Palco and a member of the Bogue American Legion Auxiliary serving as Historian.

Survivors include, one son, David Eichman and wife, Sheila, Hays, KS; two daughters, Tabetha Schraeder and husband, Robert, Hutchinson, KS; Marlene Pfeifer, Colby, KS; six grandchildren, Sierra Eichman and Derek Eichman, Sarah Mattson (Paul), Karen Beaudet (Joe), Preston Schraeder and fiancé (Sherree), Angila Pfeifer; four great grandchildren, Madelyn Beaudet, Trinity Pfeifer, Wesley Stegeman, Brielle Britton; one sister, Norma Gagnon, Lawrence, KS; two sisters-in-law, Ellenora Meyer and husband, Truman, Newton, KS; Betty Jean Kay, Portland, OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Cecil Joy; two sisters, Helen Joy and Thelma Eichman.

Services are at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 5, 2018, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Hays, Kansas. Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, at the Pleasanview Cemetery at Palco, Kansas.

Darlene Edwards

Vernon J. ‘Vern’ Basgall

Vernon J. “Vern” Basgall, 76, Hays, died Sunday, April 1, 2018 at his home in Hays.

He was born March 15, 1942 in Hays the son of Jerome and Regina (Urban) Basgall.  In 1960 he graduated from Victoria High School and attended Fort Hays State University for one year.  On August 22, 1964 he was united in marriage to Betty Morrison in Loretto, Kansas.  She preceded him in death on March 17, 2004.  Vern was an Engineer Tech 4 with the Kansas Department of Transportation until his retirement.  He enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing, hunting, camping, and spending time with his grandsons.  He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. 

Survivors include two daughters; Ruth Renee’ Kuhn of Hays and Lisa Marie Fuller of Tuscon, AZ, a grandson; Kevin Kuhn and wife Crystal of Hays, a brother; Dan Basgall and wife Linda of Hays, and a sister; Shirley Gottschalk of Manhattan, Kansas. 

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, his parents, and a grandson Kyle Kuhn.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, with Fr. Leo Blasi and Fr. John Schmeidler officiating.  Burial will follow in the LaCrosse City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Friday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street.  A parish vigil service will be at 7:00 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested in Vern’s memory to the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course, in care of the funeral home.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com

Blagrave in Plainville, Kansas.  He was a firefighter with the Hays Fire Department for 30 years, beginning in 1972 until his retirement in 2002.  He then enjoyed over thirteen years as Chief of the Ellis County Fire Department Rural District #2.  He was a member of the Firefighters Relief Association and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting firefighter memorabilia including patches from all over the world, ATVing, and volunteering at the Hays Fire Department Museum. 

Survivors include his wife Ruth, of the home in Hays, a son; Robert Leon “Bob” Shubert and wife Ashley of Hays, a daughter; Stacey Renee Graves and husband Joseph of Cedar Hill, Texas, two sisters; Lois McGuire and husband Jim of Longdale, OK and Barbara Leikam of Hays, eight grandchildren; Joshua, Alec, Zachary, Joey, Shannon, Abigail, Allison, and Thomas, six great grandchildren; AnnaSophia, Addysen, Amelia, Olivia, Tanner, and Leon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother; William Herbert Shubert.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak Street, Hays, with Pastor Ken Ediger officiating.  Burial with honors by the Hays Fire Department and Ellis County Fire Department will follow in the Plainville Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Wednesday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, and from 9:00 am until service time on Thursday at the church.  Memorials are suggested to Hays Fire Department Museum in care of the Firefighters Relief Association, PO Box 85, Hays, Kansas 67601.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com

Frank Huss Jr.

Frank Huss Jr. passed away Friday, March 30, 2018, at the Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood, Kansas, at the age of 84. He was born August 1, 1933, in Rawlins County, Kansas, to Frank Huss Sr. and Pauline Kogl.

Frank was born and raised on the family homestead located 10 miles northwest of Herndon in Rawlins County. He attended two country schools near his home, Bolte and Walsh.

On June 10, 1958, Frank married Norma Jean Marintzer at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church in Herndon. They made their home on the Huss Family farm all their married life and were blessed with six children.

Faith, family and farming were very important to Frank. He was a member of St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church all his life and had served on the parish council. Frank was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a hardworking man who enjoyed farming and working with his cattle. They also had dairy cattle which meant milking two times a day and first started out milking by hand until later installing a milking machine with a tank for storage. Until getting a farm of his own, Frank worked for several area farmers in addition to working at area sale barns. Frank took an interest in the Herndon Community and served as a school board member for USD 317 for 10 years and participated in a Pinochle Club for many years. In addition, Frank enjoyed a good rodeo and barbeque.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Norma Jean; four sons, Jeff Huss (Deb) of Culbertson, NE, Bob Huss (Linda) of Herndon, Daryl Huss of Herndon, and Kent Huss (Elizabeth) of Hays; two daughters, Arnetta Huss of Herndon and Brenda Peterson (Greg) of Atwood; two sisters, Marolyn Hoffman of Gretna, NE, and Carolyn Warner (Don) of Omaha, NE; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Alfred and Eleanora (Barenberg) Marintzer; one brother, Melvin Huss; two sisters, Ann Tietgen Jensen and Helen Frick; and a step grandson, Kim Kathka.
