Robert Daise

Longtime Sherman County resident Robert Daise, 92, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at Topside Manor in Goodland, KS.

Robert (Bob) Daise, son of George and Frances Daise, was born October 17, 1926 on the Daise Homestead in Grant Township, Sherman County, Kansas.

He attended school at a rural school near his home (District 51, Union School) and graduated from Sherman Community High School, Goodland, KS, with the class of 1944.

He enlisted in the Maritime Service in 1944 and served on active duty until 1961. He returned home and started farming and continued farming until he retired.

He was employed by the U.S.D.A. Farm Service Agency since 1958. Robert probably measured every field in Sherman County at one time or another as well as many of the grain bins, in addition to other assigned duties.

As a youngster, he was active in 4-H and was a charter member of the Grant Boosters 4-H Club.

Robert was a member of the Goodland Elks Lodge and the Goodland Knights of Columbus. The Council recently observed their 100th anniversary and recognized Robert with a plaque for 72 years of membership.

Robert took classes in Emergency Medical Technician beginning in 1994, and was named EMT of the Year for the State of Kansas in 2002 at age 76. He assisted with the training of many EMTs over the years.

He was an avid square dancer and enjoyed dancing for many years. In recent years he has been a passionate Bridge player as well as Pinochle and Pitch.

Preceding him in death were his parents, George and Frances Daise, brothers Eugene and Francis Theodore, one sister, Kathryn and her husband Jack Fay. In addition to his brother, Father Richard, those left to mourn are his sister-in-law Caroline Daise, nephews Daniel and David Daise, nieces Shirley (Russ) Poole, Mary and Debra Daise, three great-nephews and one great-great niece as well as many friends throughout western Kansas and eastern Colorado.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 22, 2019 from 5:00-7:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland. Rosary and Vigil service will be at 7:00 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Robert will be held on Monday, September 23, 2019 at 10:30 AM MT at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Goodland. Interment will be in the Goodland Cemetery.

Memorials may be designated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church or to the NWKS Ambulance Service and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

Raymond Torvie Parrott

Raymond Torvie Parrott, 80, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, died September 12, 2019 at the Nathan Adelson Hospice after a prolonged illness.

He was born December 5, 1938 in Cleburne County, Arkansas in a log cabin to Jake O. and Jessie Pearl (Tidwell) Parrott. He married the love of his life, Joyce Halling, December 29, 1962 in Hanston, Kansas.

Ray or Torvie as many knew him, served proudly in the Navy and then went to college. He attended Dodge City Community College and Wichita State University. He received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Saint Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kansas in 1971. He then completed a Master of Science degree in Education in 1975. He taught in many schools across Western Kansas and influenced countless lives as a teacher, coach, mentor, principal and superintendent.

In 1989, he retired from school administration and relocated the family remaining at home to Las Vegas. He embarked on a second career as a croupier. (Look it up!) He really enjoyed interfacing with the public and sharing his particular brand of humor at the table.

He loved his family and friends, sharing his love of his second home, Las Vegas, with all who came to visit. He also loved going to movies and the many restaurants available around town. As his health declined, he found a way to stay connected through Facebook, sharing his love of old country music, playing games and making friends with people all around the world. He had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh when he got really tickled about something.

Ray is survived by his wife of 56+ years, Joyce of Las Vegas; daughter, Monica Scrudder, Gig Harbor, Washington; son, Greg (Stefanie), LaCrosse, Kansas; son, Scott, Las Vegas; son, Richard (Eva), Hays, Kansas; daughter`, Jennifer York (Daren), Scott City, Kansas; daughter, Myrna, Las Vegas; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Sisters: Wanda Abernathy (Robert) Hutchinson, Kansas; Linda Rehmert, Eufala, Oklahoma; Brenda West, Corinth, Mississippi and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jake O. and Jessie Pearl Parrott; his brother Andrew; a half-sister, Opal Woodam; grand-daughter, Alexa Leigh Whalen; daughter, Janelle Parrott Whalen; and son, Michael Brett.

Larry L. (Colonel) Carr

Larry L. (Colonel) Carr, 78, passed away September 17, 2019 at Country Living of Larned.

He was born July 11, 1941 at Great Bend, KS, the son of Guy “DeLos” and Glennis Eleanor Schultz Carr. A lifetime area resident, Larry and his wife, Marlene, were founders of Carr Auction and Real Estate.

He was of the Christian faith. He was the president of Kansas Chapter #3 IHC Collectors Club; He sat for the boards of Santa Fe Trail Center, First State Bank, Pawnee County COOP. He was a member of the Kansas Auctioneer Association, The National Auctioneer Association, Kansas Realtor Association, co-founder of Sunrise Association, Larned Rotary Club, Lion’s Club and the Breakfast Club. He was an avid sports fan; collector of antique tractors and he was a Melvin Jones recipient.

On June 3, 1960 he married Marlene Renfro in Larned, KS. She survives.

Other survivors include: son, Kirk Carr, Larned, KS; daughter, Tammy (Jim) Froetschner, Larned, KS; brother, Harlie R. (Paula) Carr, Larned, KS; sisters, Carla (Gary) Bowman, Manhattan, KS, Bonnie Carr, Wichita, KS; three grandchildren, Shane Carr, Silverthorne, CO, Chris (Jamie) Froetschner, Larned, KS, Jami (Chris) Battin, Pratt, KS; six great grandchildren, Finley LaRue, Royce Callait, Sawyer May, Eli Christopher, Brezlin Vi and Jude Edward.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Val Gene.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2019, at Larned United Methodist Church, with Bob Sallee and Pastor Tricia North presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, KS. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery, Larned, KS.

Rita J. Buehler

Rita J. Buehler, age 72, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on October 13, 1946, in Longmont, Colorado, the daughter of Charles Grant and Nadi-ene Ebel Neeley. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1964 moving from Dighton, Kansas, she was a Cosmetologist.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On May 31, 1964, she married Richard D. Buehler in Dighton, Kansas. He survives.

Survivors include her Husband – Richard Buehler of Scott City, Kansas, Two Sons – Darin & Robin Buehler of Scott City, Kansas, Shane Buehler of Kearney, Nebraska, Two Daughters – Tara Buehler of Aurora, Colorado, Richel & Curtis Stagner of Aurora, Colorado, One Brother – Paul Neeley of California, Five Grandchildren and One Great Grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her Parents.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.

Beverly Ann Franklin

Beverly Ann Franklin, age 62, passed away on September 17, 2019 at the Grisell Memorial Hospital in Ransom, Kansas. She was born on July 19, 1957 in Ransom, Kansas the daughter of Wayne and Laura (Wyman) Turner.

Beverly was a 1975 graduate of Ransom High School. Throughout high school Bev loved cheerleading and even sewed her cheerleading uniform along with many other clothes. Bev was the mother of three daughters. She was the assistant vice-president and operations officer at the First State Bank, Ransom where she had worked for 33 years. She was a member of St. Aloysius Church and the Altar Society, both of Ransom. Bev enjoyed country music, concerts, rodeos, being at the lake, and hiking. She loved her family deeply and greatly enjoyed the times when her brothers and sisters got together. Bev was devoted to her daughters and would drive hundreds of miles to be sure she was there to celebrate birthdays and other events with her children and grandchildren.

On August 19, 2006, Bev married Bruce Franklin in Utica. He preceded her in death on May 9, 2008.

Survivors include her mother, Laura Turner of Ransom; daughters, Kim Kendall and her husband, Joe, of Pratt, Amy Engelbert and her husband, Zane, of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Val Klitzke and her husband, Bryce, of Pratt; brothers, Gary Turner of Miltonvale and Mike Turner and his wife, Tessie, of Dixon, California; and her sister, Vicki Schmidt and her husband, Rich, of Mulvane; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Wayne Turner, her husband, Bruce Franklin, and an infant son.

Funeral service will be on Saturday, September 21, 2019, 10:30 a.m., at the St. Aloysius Church, Ransom. Burial in the Vansburgh Cemetery, Brownell, Kansas. Visitation will be on Friday, September 20, 2019, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Ransom VFW.

Lila Marie (German) Atwell

Lila Marie (German) Atwell, the daughter of Delmar and Birdie (Neff) German, was born on August 1, 1931, in Glen Elder, Kansas. She departed this life September 15, 2019, at Salina Regional Health Center at the age of 88.

Lila grew up on the family farm south of Glen Elder, attended rural Grellet Grade School, and graduated from Glen Elder High School. She received a BS in Home Economics from Kansas State University where she met her future husband, and in 1951, a BS – Registered Nurse from Kansas University Medical Center in 1954.

Lila married her husband, Leroy Atwell, on September 7, 1952. To this union were born three children, Linda, Leon and Lance, whom she greatly loved. Lila and her husband moved to Utica, Kansas, in 1954, to join the Atwell farm and ranch operation while Lila worked at the Grisell Memorial Hospital in Ransom, Kansas. In 1961, they moved to the Edgar Williams farm east of Norton. After moving to Norton, Lila worked as a nurse at the Andbe Home. In 1975, she established the Norton County Health Department and later the PRN Home Health Agency administering those agencies for 23 years. Caring for the health of others and her family was a high priority in her life. She always appreciated nature and enjoyed tending to her flower and vegetable gardens and yard.

Lila grew up in the Friends Church in Glen Elder, of which her ancestors helped establish. Later she was a member of the Utica Christian Church and the Norton Christian Church where both she and her husband were youth leaders. Lila was a 4-H youth leader and a Farm Bureau leader. She received the Farm Bureau State Health and Wellness Award, Business and Professional’s Woman of the Year Award and was nominated for the Nursing Heart of Healthcare Award.

Survivors include: daughter, Linda, and husband, Ken Ziegler, of Oakley, Kansas; two sons, Leon, and wife, Treva (LeCount,) of Norton, Kansas, and Lance, and wife, Christine (Nonnweiler,) of Garner, Iowa; five grandchildren, Amber (Russ Wolters,) Brett (Kylie Shoemaker,) Leron, Kallie and Lindsey, and three great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Benjamin and Braxton, along with nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy, parents, Delmar and Birdie German, brother Max German, parents-in-law, Merritt and Thelma Atwell, Tom and Elita Bentley, Darrell and Agnes Holmes.

Visitation will be at the Enfield Funeral Home in Norton, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, September 20, 2019. Memorial services will be at the Norton Christian Church on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at 11:30 am. Private family interment services will be at the Norton Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Lila Atwell Memorial Fund in support of the Norton County Health Department.

Donald Clayton McClelland

Donald Clayton McClelland, beloved son of Orland and Eunice (Jarvis) McClelland, was born February 22, 1940 in Norton, Kansas, and peacefully passed away at his home in Norton with his loved ones by his side on September 17, 2019, at the age of 79.

Don grew up in Norton and graduated from Norton Community High School with the Class of 1958. On September 23, 1962, Don married the love of his life, Phyllis Marlene Vanover, in Clayton, Kansas, and to this union their beautiful daughter, Robin, was born. They lived for a short time in Norton, Stockton, and Beloit, Kansas, Omaha, Nebraska and eight years in Des Moines, Iowa before moving back to Norton in 1978, where Don and his wife successfully established and managed Don’s Auto Supply.

Don was very active in the Norton community. He was a charter member of Norton Jaycees, a past member of the Norton Chamber of Commerce and served on the Board of Directors, he was also a past Board of Directors member of UNWFCU for 20 years, past Norton Public Library Board Member, past Board of Directors member for the Norton Theatre where he also served as a projectionist for 26 years, Member of the Kansas Army National Guard for eight years with one year of active duty, and a Member of the Norton American Legion Post #63 for 34 years. Don enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycles, traveling, and most importantly, spending time with his family.

Survivors include: his loving daughter, Robin, and husband, Russ Rutland, Charlotte, NC; his dearest significant other, Rita Ham of Hastings, NE, along with her daughter and granddaughter, Amber Ham and Alexis Ham, who affectionately referred to Don as Papa, Tumwater, WA; one sister, Darlene Paynter, Scottsdale, AZ; several other relatives and friends.

Don is rejoicing in heaven with his parents; wife, Phyllis; one sister, Mary Lea Daniels; parents-in-law, Cloyd and Isabelle Vanover; and brother-in-law, Les Vanover.

Richard Benton Hayes

Richard Benton Hayes, age 80, of Atwood, passed away September 17th, 2019 at the Rawlins County Health Center. Rich was born on March 28th, 1939 in Decatur County, Kansas to C. A. “Jack” and Virda Hayes, he was the 4th of five children.

Rich was born and raised on the family farm north of Rexford, in Decatur County, along with four siblings. He grew up in Decatur County, Kansas and graduated from the Decatur Community High School in 1958.

On August 13th, 1960 Rich married Janice Kay Vernon, to this union they were blessed with three children, Machelle Brown, Rocky Hayes and Melissa McCoy. The couple made their first home in Decatur County and in the 70’s they relocated to their present residence, in Atwood, Kansas.

Throughout his life Rich owned and operated the Atwood Sale Barn, tamed and raised livestock, along with custom harvesting. Things that he enjoyed in life were coyote hunting, taking part in rodeos, later in life fishing and camping, but mostly he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Rich is survived by his wife Janice; two daughters and husbands, Machelle and Ron Brown and Melissa and Mike McCoy; son and wife, Rocky and Lisa Hayes, all of Atwood, KS; eight grandchildren, Tosha & Amy Landau, Hunter & Heath Knopp, Mason McCoy, Bryanna Metcalf, Cauy and Tanner Hayes; three great grandchildren, Chloe Simpson, Lane & Kambri Metcalf; sister, Carolyn Sue Hayes, of Colby, KS; brother and wife, Chester & Nina Hayes, of Grinnell, KS; and many more nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters and husbands, Berneda & Ray Zoberst and Luella & Murlin Krizek ; two nephews, Ronnie Barnett and Steve Krizek and one niece, Barbara Farmer.

Fredrick O’Brian Rupp

Fredrick O’Brian Rupp, 62, of Bushton and Hays, Kansas, died on Thursday, July 25, 2019, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Fred was born on November 15, 1956, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the son of Linus and Bernice (Weigel) Rupp. He grew up and attended school in Cheyenne and also lived in Denver, Colorado, Bushton, Kansas and Hays, Kansas. He worked for Sun Oil in the oil field for many years. He was a member of the Catholic Church. He enjoyed working with leather crafts, painting and watching Denver Broncos Football. Most of all he enjoyed riding his motorcycle and spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving family included his sister Janice Yanda (Daryel) of Gorham, Kansas and brothers Curt Rupp of Bushton, Kansas and John Rupp (Kim) of Mooresville, Indiana, Step Mother Mary Ann Rupp of Lyons, Kansas. Step Sisters Tina Sims, Katrina Sims and Step Brothers Tim Sims, Billy Wade Sims and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Dale Yanda.

Fred’s wishes were to be cremated and have a Celebration of Life to be held on a later date that was warm so all his buddies could ride their bikes! The Celebration of Life will be held Saturday September 28th at Lincoln Park in Russel, KS at the corner West 3rd Street and North Lincoln Street from 2pm and 5pm. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
