William J. Fry, age 58, of Hays (formerly of WaKeeney) passed away Monday, January 22, 2018, at Hays Medical Center.

Jack Jewell

Jack Jewell, age 90, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018 at his home in Scott County, Kansas. He was born on June 12, 1927 in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Leo & Alice Goertz Jewell. A lifetime resident of Scott County, Kansas, he was a farmer.

On June 30, 1951 he married Alma Lamoine Hager in Scott City, Kansas. She survives.

Survivors include his Wife – Alma Jewell of Scott City, Kansas, One Son – David Jewell of Wichita, Kansas, Three Daughters – Cindy Barnes of Dodge City, Kansas, Diana Yost of Holcomb, Kansas, Linda Leger of Scott City, Kansas, One Sister – Donna Dee Carpenter of Scott City, Kansas, Eight Grandchildren and Six Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his Parents, 1 Brother and 2 Sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 27, 2018 with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls presiding. Memorials may be given to the Jack Jewell Memorial Fund % Price & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday and 10:00 until 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.

Loren H. Grau

Phillips County resident Loren H. Grau passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 89.

Loren was born Nov. 27, 1928 in Phillips County to Theodore & Ida (Beyerlein) Grau. On April 26, 1964 he married Frances I. Keeten in Glade, KS. Loren was a career farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, of their home in rural Phillipsburg; daughters, Linda Heersink of Stuttgart, KS and Sonja Jackson of Olathe, KS; grandson, Trent Heersink and granddaughter, Lauren Heersink.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 27, at 10:30 a.m. in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stuttgart, with Pastors Lee Bennight and Lorna Paulus officiating. Burial will follow in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery with military honors by Fort Riley.

Mr. Grau will lie in-state on Thurs. & Fri., Jan. 25 & 26, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Nicholas ‘Nick’ Andrew Melendez

Nicholas “Nick” Andrew Melendez, born August 2, 1997 in Hays, KS, departed this life suddenly on January 14, 2018 in Woodinville, WA. He was 20 years old.

Nicholas graduated from Woodinville High School, Class of 2016. He enjoyed bike riding, making music, and spending time with his siblings and friends. Nicholas is survived by his parents David and Tara Melendez of Duvall, WA, brother Vincent Melendez, sister Grace Melendez, grandparents David and Cindy Lang of Monroe, WA and Deanna Melendez of Hays, KS.

A Funeral Mass honoring Nicholas’s life will be held on Saturday, January 27th, 2018, 10:00 am, at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, 26526 NE Cherry Valley Rd., Duvall, WA 98019. Memorial donations in his name may be made to Catholic Community Services, ccsww.org.

Betty L. Swank

Betty L. Swank, 95, formerly of Osborne, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2018 at the Hospice House in Hutchinson, KS. Betty was born to Clyde & Eunice (Wurster) Suchsland in Smith County, KS on July 23, 1922.

Betty graduated from high school in Gaylord, KS. She then attended Fort Hays State. Betty married Pete Swank on January 23, 1943, and to this union, 2 daughters were born.

Betty & Pete were owners of Swank-Standley Motors, Inc. of Osborne, for over 50 years. Betty was the bookkeeper, did title work & other responsibilities with the car dealership. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church and UMW. Betty was also a member of PEO, Upsilon Tau Delta and was a Girl Scout leader. Betty enjoyed knitting & crocheting, mowing her lawn and other outdoor activities.

When Betty turned 92, she moved to WaKeeney, KS to be closer to family. She then moved to Pleasant View Home in Inman in June of 2017.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Pete in 2000; brother, Robert Suchsland; 8 brothers-in-law; 8 sisters-in-law; 1 grandson, Brian Keith.

Betty is survived by her daughters: Kaye (Mark) Schwartz of Buhler, KS; Nancy (Ross) Jamison of WaKeeney, KS; 4 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

Donelle Jordan

Donelle Jordan, 92, a resident of the Parsons Presbyterian Manor and a former resident of Cherryvale and Erie, died at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Manor.

​She was born May 31, 1925, at Douglas, Oklahoma to Luin Lewis and Reva Lucille (Irey) Atterbery. Her family lived in various places in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Illinois in her early years. She graduated from Russell High School in Russell, Kansas in 1944. Another member of the graduating class was Senator Robert Dole.

​Donelle had lived in Cherryvale since 1954 and was employed as a clerk in the Montgomery County Court House at Independence several years. Her husband, James M. Jordan, preceded her in death in 2006 and in 2008 she moved to Erie to reside at the Guest Home Estates. Two years ago she moved to the Presbyterian Manor in Parsons.
​She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Cherryvale and had attended the Federated Church in Erie. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and had been active in the Women’s Golf Association at the Cherryvale Country Club. Her hobbies included playing golf, crocheting and reading.

Survivors include a daughter Jennifer George, of Hays; four grandchildren, Jason (Kara) Reddick, of Sherman, TX, Michael Reddick, of Wichita, Carrie (Zach) Dunham, of Cleveland, OK and Josh Jordan, serving in the U.S. Army and stationed at Ft. Riley, KS; seven great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Preceding he in death was her husband, a son, Jerold Jordan and two brothers, Gyle Atterbery and Galen Atterbery.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 27, at the Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale. The family will receive friends at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons from 7 to 8 p.m., Friday. Memorials are suggested to the Kindred Hospice. Edwin W. ‘Ed’ Wilson

Edwin W. “Ed” Wilson, 90, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018 in Abilene. He was born November 8, 1927 in Carlton to Walter and Mary Elizabeth (Karr) Wilson. Ed attended local schools in the Carlton area and graduated from Abilene High School in 1945.

On October 2, 1953 he married his wife of 64 years, Sarah Travis, in Salina. Ed was a farmer. As a young man he followed the harvest from Texas to Canada. His father sold M & M tractors and so he grew to love them and later collected many of them. He also enjoyed collecting antique tools and machinery.

His love for the Lord led him on five mission trips, one to the Philippines and four to Africa. He served his Lord with his work through his church and as a member of the Gideons, where he found much joy passing out Bibles.

Ed’s great love was for his family and grandchildren. He was blessed to have them all live close and many wonderful memories were made celebrating harvest, birthdays, holidays, and everyday life. A picnic to Ed was as good as it gets.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Barbara Jo at age 6 of meningitis. Son, John Walter at age 20 of Muscular Dystrophy, and great grandson Nolan Matthew Petersen, 7 months in 2008. Brothers Roger and Bill and a sister Edith Atkinson.

Survivors include: his wife, Sarah, of the home; three sons, Jeff and wife Susan of Carlton, Mitch and wife Denise of Abilene, Mike and wife Karen of Carlton; daughter, Kellie Voss and husband Wayne of Hays; 15 grandchildren, Michelle (Lance) Miller, Angela (Matt) Petersen, Shannon Wilson (John Goddard), Amanda (Brian) Pope, Courtney Wilson, Janay (Dylan) Crosson, Dustin Wilson, Brian Wilson, Eric (Kelsey) Wilson, Kristy Wilson, Kevin Wilson, Allen (Lanee) Voss, Aaron, Jordan and Ethan Voss; 3 great-grandchildren, Aubrey Miller, Willa Petersen, and John Voss; sister, Carol Hansen of Salina and sister-in-law Caroline Wilson of Olathe.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, January25th, at the Mt. Pleasant Evangelical Presbyterian Church south of Abilene with Pastor Mark Stanger officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:30 – 6:30 PM Wednesday, January 24th, at the Danner Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions in his name be made to The Gideons International or The Muscular Dystrophy Association. Larry G. Herber

Larry G. Herber passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at his home near Dorrance, Kansas at the age of 79. He was born on the family farm in Russell County, near Dorrance, on June 11, 1938 to the late Chester and Ethel (Washburn) Herber. He grew up in Russell County and graduated from Dorrance High School with the Class of 1956. He served in the United States Army from 1957-1959 and was stationed in Germany. Following an honorable discharge, he went on to attain an associate’s degree from Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

On May 30, 1964, while attending college in Tulsa, he met and married JoAnne Howard, whom he described as “the love of my life.” After graduation they moved to Wichita, Kansas where Larry worked for Boeing until 1972 when he returned to Russell County and began cattle ranching and farming with his brother Gary. Later he began driving a truck, a job he thoroughly loved, and logged over 1 million miles hauling trailers, from coast to coast and border to border for King of the Road of Russell. He enjoyed hunting and shooting trap and was a Champion shooter in 1988 at the Kansas Trapshooting Association’s annual State Shoot. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Dorrance, American Legion in Dorrance, and the VFW in Russell.

Larry is survived by his brother Gary Herber and wife Carolyn of Dorrance; nephews Tim Herber and wife Christi of Dorrance, Jim Herber and wife Julie of Newport News, VA, Jamie Herber and wife Jamie of Dorrance; and great-nieces/nephews Jordyn, Emily, Allison, Ethan, Rachel, and Camden.

He was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Ethel Herber, and his wife JoAnne Herber.

Larry was a man who loved life and adventure and was always willing to take on a new challenge. He was always willing to help a friend or neighbor in need, and lived every day of his life being a good steward of the land and all of the blessings of God in his life. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.

The family is hosting a time of visitation and celebration from 1:00-5:00pm on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the American Legion in Dorrance. A private family inurnment will take place on Friday.

Rosetta Ann ‘Rosie’ Bussen

Rosetta Ann “Rosie” Bussen, 72, Hays, died Thursday, January 18, 2018 at her home.

She was born December 1, 1945 in Denver, Colorado the daughter of Albinus and Albina (Rohr) Befort. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Denver, from North Central Kansas Technical College with a degree in business, and from Hays Academy of Hair Design. She was united in marriage to James Edward Palcher in 1968 and later married Melvin Beckner on March 4, 1974 in Denver. He preceded her in death in 1998. She then married Edward Murray Bussen. She worked for Travenol, Hays Pathology Lab, and was a licensed cosmetologist who taught at the Hays Academy of Hair Design, worked for Smart Styles in Hays, and owned her own beauty shop called Country Reflections in Munjor, Kansas. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Altar Society Christian Mothers, both of Munjor. Her hobbies included listening to Conway Twitty, watching medical and mystery television programs, spending time with her grandchildren, and rooting for her beloved Denver Broncos.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Bussen of ElDorado, four daughters; Lee Ann Rankin, Sarah Beckner, January Meade and husband Hank, and Erin Beckner, all of Hays, three step-children; Nathan Bussen and wife Amelia of Plainville, Brandy Spresser and husband Devin of Selden, and Bradley Bussen of Great Bend, a brother; Richard Befort and wife Corky of Danville, Kansas, four sisters; Ethel Brouillette and husband Larry of Hastings, NE, Carolyn Pritchard of Indianapolis, Indiana, Norma Cornell and husband Michael of Concord, CA, and Jeanette Engrow of Florida, eight grandchildren; Jade Rankin, Seth Rankin, Michael McCall, Hannah Meade, Alexander Meade, DeMarcus Aldridge, Harmony Beckner, and Malichi Beckner, three step-grandchildren; Lilly-ana Bussen, Avery Bussen, Milo Bussen, and Maggie Spresser, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Melvin, and by a step-daughter; Carmen Bussen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor with Fr. Jarett Konrade and Fr. Tom Brouillette officiating. Private family burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday and from 9:00 am until 10:00 on Thursday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. An Altar Society Christian Mothers rosary will be at 6:00 followed by a vigil service at 6:30, all on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City or to the Community Assistance Center in Hays, in care of the funeral home. Carl Alvan Larson, 73, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, January 21, 2018, at the Russell Regional Hospital surrounded by his family.

A celebration of Carl’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, January 25, 2018, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to either the Russell Public Library or the Kansas University Cancer Center and sent in care of the mortuary.

Marvin Dean Keil, born Feb. 13, 1930, died Jan. 18, 2018, in Hays.

Visitation will be Mon., Jan. 22, 5-7 p.m. at Baalmann Mortuary, 190 S. Franklin Ave., Colby.

Funeral service Tue., Jan. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, East 5th and County Club Drive, Colby, with Rev. Robert Alexander officiating. Interment will be at Beulah Cemetery, Country Club Dr., Colby.
