Daniel Lee Quigley

Daniel Lee Quigley, age 64, of Manhattan, died Thursday September 12, 2019 at the Kindred Hospital-The Heights, in Houston, Texas.

Dan was born on April 1, 1955 in Great Bend, Kansas the son of Clarence and Virginia (Reed) Quigley. He grew up in the Hays, Kansas area and graduated from Hays High School in 1973.

On June 14, 1975 in Hays, he married his high school sweetheart, Kathy Schmidt. She survives at their home in Manhattan.

At the age of 19, Dan went to work for Southwestern Bell, which became AT&T, as a lineman. He retired in 2012 from AT&T as a communications tech.

He loved walking the trails at Tuttle Creek Lake, watching the eagles and ducks as he took his daily stroll and bike ride. He also enjoyed camping with friends and family. When he wasn’t outdoors, Dan and his brother, CA, indulged their passion for trains, switching between chasing trains to get a glimpse of an old steam engine passing through town to building displays with miniature train sets, complete with bridges, buildings and all the scenery to go with it. He often went to antique tractor and engine shows and NASCAR races with his father and brothers. Dan also liked museums, evidenced by his membership to the Smithsonian.

He was preceded in death by his father, his brother CA Quigley, and infant brother Michael Bruce.

In addition to his wife, Kathy, he is survived by his cherished daughter, Danielle Miller and her husband Cory, of Houston; his mother, Virginia Quigley, of Hays, Kansas; his sister, Mary Sloan and her husband Larry, of Albert, Kansas, his brother, Mark Quigley and his wife Becky, of Hays, Kansas, and his brother Chris Quigley and his wife Tina of Hays, Kansas, also his sister-in-law, Linda Quigley, of Mulvane, Kansas as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday September 19, 2019 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday September 20, 2019 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel in Manhattan, with Pastor Melanie Nord officiating. Private interment will be held at the Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Smithsonian, or becoming a member like Dan. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Marjorie Beaman

Marjorie Beaman, age 95, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2019.

She is survived by her children, Linda (Timothy) Wright, Nancy (Paul) Powers and Britt H. Beaman; eight grandchildren, Erin Dye, Cara Wolfsdorf, Kaitlin Cohen, Delaney Wright, Leslie Stegenga, Aaron Powers, Joel Powers and Heidi Diekman; 15 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Ray; parents; brothers, Erwin and Merlin Feemster.

Visitation with family present will be Wednesday, September 18, 2019 from 5 pm-7pm at Cochran Mortuary, 1411 N. Broadway.

Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. service on Thursday, September 19 at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 5701 E. Mt. Vernon St., Wichita, 67218. Burial will be at 3:30 at Uniontown Cemetery in Uniontown, KS. A memorial has been established with Mt. Vernon UMC &/or Hospice at Hays Med, 2220 Canterbury Drive

John Phillip Floyd

John Phillip Floyd, age 84, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019, at University of Denver Hospital in Denver, Colorado

John was born May 11, 1935 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Richard A. & Verna H. ( Stone ) Floyd. A resident of Greeley County since the 1930’s , he was a farmer, avid hunter and fisherman, but most importantly, Papa.

John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Tribune, Kansas.

On December 23, 1963 he married Emma Grace Proctor at Syracuse, Kansas. Grace passed away on September 21, 2019 in Hays, Kansas

John’s surviving family includes his Two children – Lloyd Patterson, Jr. of Rush, Colorado, Penny Graham or Tribune, Kansas, Grandchildren – Kara Jo ( Skyler) Howell of Tribune, Kansas, Kegan Wendt of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Brian Graham of Quinter, Kansas, Sara (Andy) Albers of Tribune, Kansas, Teresa Graham of Ellinwood, Kansas, Jason Graham of Tribune, Kansas, Natalie Patterson of Austin, Texas, Great Grandchildren – Hannah, Trevor, Marie, Tyler, Nicole, Trinity, Raylynn, Shaydan, Tayler, Gracelynn, Cenlee, Kaden & Spencer.

His parents, a daughter, Verna Sue Wendt, and three brothers, Howard, I. Floyd II, Edwin D. Floyd and Richard A. Floyd precede him in death.

At John’s request, cremation has taken place and services will be at a later date.

Memorials may be given in John’s memory to the Greeley County Trap Club.

Anna Mary (Fleming) Barnett

Anna Mary (Fleming) Barnett, 89, of Colby, died Monday, September 16, 2019, at Fairview Estates of Colby, KS. Anna Mary was born to Henry L. and Laura W. (Kirby) Fleming in Logan, KS, on June 24, 1930. She grew up in Rooks County, near Webster, KS. In 1945 her and her family moved to Sheridan County, KS.

In August 17, 1952, she married Morris Barnett in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Studley, KS. They made their home North of Colby, KS. To this union two children were born, Cheryl and Charles.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Colby.

Survivors are her children, Cheryl (Forest) Towsley, of Colorado Springs, CO and Charles (Rylinda) Barnett, Colby, KS; sisters, Bernett White, of Oregon and Merle Ellis, of Colby; grandchildren, Kristy Karnes, Brian Barnett and Anna Towsley; great grandchildren, Brielle Karnes and Brandon Karnes; brother-in-law Bernard Barnett; sisters-in-law, Helen Klein, Grace Jones and Mildred Green.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Morris; brothers, John and Bill Fleming and sister Beulah Hamme.

Monica Miller

Monica Miller, 1979 – 2019. Well-known former Fayette resident Monica Renee Miller died near Hays, Kansas on Saturday, September 14 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was 40 years of age.

The daughter of Carrol “Gene” and Lorna T. Miller, Monica was born in Columbia, Mo., on March 16, 1979. Growing up in Fayette, she was a member of the Fayette First Christian Church. She was active in church, school, and community activities and graduated with the Fayette High School Class of 1997. She continued her education at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, MO where she was an active member of the Sigma Kappa sorority. She earned the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts from Culver in 2001.

Monica went on to receive the degree of Master of Public Affairs from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 2008. Monica’s love of drama, theater, and music led to an internship at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., a summer job with the Creed Repertory Theatre in Creede, CO, and a position as the administrative assistant to the Director of Bands with Marching Mizzou at the University of Missouri. For the past decade, Monica had a distinguished career as a Program Analyst for the United States Geological Survey at the Columbia Environmental Research Center in Columbia, MO, where she was employed at the time of her death. Monica was an independent and adventuresome spirit.

She loved the out-of-doors, backpacking and camping trips took her all over the country. She also enjoyed working with her sorority as a graduate leader at Canton. Among her greatest joys was time spent with the many friends she made from school, at work, and through her travels. Most of all, she loved her family. Her great good nature and loving guidance will be sorely missed by her parents and family, all her friends, and, of course, her faithful dog Winnie.

Monica is survived by her parents of Columbia, her aunt and uncle Margaret and John Ensor of Jeffersonville, IN, cousins Mark (Deanna) Ensor, Marsha Johnson and her daughter Malika, Michele (Brian) Pope, her great aunt Arlene Miller of Lindale, AZ, and a host of friends.

Funeral services for Monica Miller will be held at 2:00 PM at the Fayette First Christian Church on Saturday, September 28, with Rev. Stephen Johnson officiating. Visitation will be immediately preceding the service from noon until 2:00 PM at the church. Burial will follow the services at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Fayette. A celebration of life gathering will be held at Cambridge Place Clubhouse on Scarborough Drive in Columbia, MO at 6:00 PM. Earl L. Wiles

Earl L. Wiles, age 95, passed away on Monday, September 16, 2019 at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas.

Earl was born November 19, 1923, on the family farmstead northeast of McDonald, Kansas, the son of Arthur & Lydia (Peckham) Wiles. He lived his first eleven years in rural Rawlins County, Kansas, where he attended school. The family relocated to northeast Wichita County, Kansas in 1935, where his father Arthur, established a new farmstead on land he had purchased. Earl completed grade school in a one-room country school in Wichita County. He attended high school in Scott City, graduating in 1941. He operated the family farm with his father until his father’s retirement, after which Earl continued to manage the farm. On November 10, 1943 he married Evelyn Shumard in Wichita County, Kansas.

They had three children, Larry Arthur, Robert Earl, and Joann Kay. Following Robert’s graduation from Kansas State University and completion of his Army enlistment, Earl & Robert operated the family farm. Robert gradually assumed primary responsibility for the farming operation and added a cattle operation as Earl neared retirement. After nearly forty years of marriage Evelyn passed away on February 21st, 1983 in Garden City, Kansas. Earl married Lois V. Fischer on September 1, 1984. They enjoyed thirty-five years of marriage. Earl retired in 2006.

Earl was active in local and the church communities. He served on the East Liberty district of Wichita County School Board, was a former member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer, trustee and Sunday School Superintendant until Pleasant Valley’s assimilation into Leoti United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas. He was a past member of the Wichita County ASC/FHA committee and an associate member of the Scott Cooperative Association board of directors. Earl was a lifetime member of the Wichita County Museum and the Wichita County Amusement Association for which he and Lois ran assorted booths for many years. He served twenty-three years on the 25th Judicial District nominating committee and he was a life member of the National Rifle Association.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas with Pastor Travis King officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery in Leoti, Kansas.

Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Thursday and from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Leoti, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wichita County Health Center or Wichita County E.M.T.’s in care of the funeral home.

Bailey Ann Roth

Phillipsburg resident Bailey Ann Roth passed away Sept. 15, 2019, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita at the age of 11. She was born November 18, 2007, in Holdrege, NE, the daughter of Jerod & Amber (Huenergarde) Roth. She was in the 6th grade at Phillipsburg Middle School.

Survivors include her parents, Jerod and Amber of the home in rural Phillipsburg; 2 sisters, Sierra & Abby of the home; paternal grandparents, Neal & Linda Roth of Phillipsburg; maternal grandparents, Allen & Connie Stapel of Phillipsburg & Jim Huenergarde of Liebenthal, KS & many aunts, uncles & cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the Huck Boyd Community Center with Pastor Jay Brandon officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Dale Leroy Redmond

Dale Leroy Redmond was born November 2, 1931, to Fred and Edith (Reinecker) Redmond, in Quinter, Kansas. He graduated from Quinter High School in 1950.

Dale married Darlene Edwards on September 9, 1951 in the Quinter Church of the Brethren, where he remained an active member. Dale worked at Reinecker IGA and the United Telephone Company prior to going to the Army in 1953. He was stationed at Fort Riley, most of his service time, with brief stays at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Camp Polk, Louisiana. Dale and Darlene lived in Manhattan, Kansas, during that time. After Dale’s discharge, they moved to Oklahoma City, and Dale worked at Macklenburg and Duncan Manufacturing. He also attended night School at Oklahoma City University. In May 1958, they moved to Quinter, and he went to work for Central Kansas Power (Now Midwest Energy) in September of 1958 until December 1987. He was District Manager for Northwest Kansas the last number of years.

Dale coached Pee Wee baseball, taught Hunters Safely courses for young boys, was part of the Kiwanis group, devoted to Camp Colorado, took tickets at many ballgames, was a member of the National Rifle Association, and was a handyman for many projects at the church, for his family, and remodeled his Colorado cabin. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed westerns.

During his retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling, with trips to Alaska, Canada, Puerto Rico, Argentina and the Bahamas. In 1992, they purchased a cabin in Beulah, Colorado, and enjoyed their time and friends there in the summers.

Darlene passed away Saturday March 31, 2018, after 66 years of marriage and he was just lost after that. His medical problems began in July 2018. He passed away Saturday, September 14, 2019.

He is survived by his daughters, Gina (Wendall) Hargitt, and Joni (Kurt) Kerns, both of Quinter; grandchildren, Shannon (Marlayna) Hargitt, Wakeeney, Patrick (Heather) Hargitt, Amber Hargitt, Brandon Kerns and Hailey Kerns, all of Quinter; great-grandchildren, Kale and Kinley Hargitt, Asher Rockhold, all of Quinter, Bo Schoenberger of Wakeeney; sister, Kay (Dwight) Kepferle, Billings, Montana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Edith; and brothers, Leslie and Wayne Redmond.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 20, 2019 at Quinter Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in the Baker Township Cemetery, with military honors.

Visitation will be Thursday evening, from 5 to 7 o’clock at the funeral home in Quinter.

Michael Don ‘Mike’ Clark Jr.

Michael Don “Mike” Clark Jr., 62, passed away September 16, 2019 at his home in Larned.

He was born December 20, 1956 in Larned to Michael Don and Kitty Ann Shepherd Clark Sr.

A longtime area resident he worked at Larned State Hospital as a LMHT and was a member of the Escue Chapel, CME Church, Larned. He served in the United States Army. He owned his own sanitation service for several years and also enjoyed cooking for the residents of Diversicare of Larned.

On August 12, 1977 he married Rene Shaver at Colorado Springs, Colorado, she survives.

Other survivors include; his mother, Kitty Clark; two sons, Tyrone Clark and Lamont Clark, Larned; daughter, Jene (Jason) Humphrey, Larned; four sisters, Denise Shellman, Houston, Texas, Lois Cephus, Dodge City, Brenda (Steve) Tyler, Wichita, Linda Upshaw, Tacoma, Washington; brother, Cecil (Bernadine) Clark, Lakeview Terrace, California; fifteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Michael “Mike” Clark Sr.

Funeral service 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 23, 2019 at the Escue Chapel, CME Church, Larned with Reverend Cameron Moore presiding. Visitation 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 22, 2019, Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.

Catherine Cecelia Bender

Catherine Cecelia Bender, 93, of Chandler, AZ and formerly of Garden City, KS, died peacefully surrounded by all six of her kids at her bedside at Desert Oasis Chandler Group Home on Sunday, September 15, 2019.

Catherine was born on December 30, 1925 to James and Rachel (Connor) Winderlin in Scott City, Kansas. She was the youngest of four brothers and three sisters, all who have previously passed. She was raised on a farm north of Scott City, attended a rural elementary school, and graduated from Scott City High School. After graduation, she attended Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, KS where she graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She then worked as a medical technician in Denver, CO, Scott City, KS, and then Garden City, KS. She married Joseph P. Bender on August 6, 1955 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, KS. Cathy and Joe settled in Garden City where they raised six children. After Cathy stayed home to take care of her youngest, she went to work for the United States Post Office where she delivered mail until retirement. Her husband, Joe, passed away in 1998. Catherine then moved to Chandler, AZ in October of 1999 to be near some of her children and their families.

In Garden City, Catherine was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and sang in the church choir for many years. Once in Chandler, AZ, she became a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, faithfully attending mass six days a week for years. She enjoyed playing bridge at the Chandler Senior Center and loved challenging all her family members at chinese checkers! After Catherine was diagnosed with Alzheimers, she worked diligently to slow down the disease by playing Scrabble, doing crossword puzzles, and staying on top of current events. She had a great love for her family, always putting them first, feeding them great food, and remembering birthdays every year.

Catherine is survived by six children: Fred Bender, Kay (John) Warner, Cindy (Jerry) Long, Steven (Melissa) Bender, Chuck (Libby) Bender, and Keith (Deb) Bender; 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Visitation will take place at the Bueler Mortuary, 14 W Hulet Drive in Chandler from 6:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 17, 2019. A Rosary will be said at 7:00 PM. The funeral mass will be on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 3450 W Ray Road in Chandler at 10:00 AM followed by lunch and fellowship provided by the St. Andrew Funeral Ministry in the church social hall immediately following the mass.

A second visitation will take place at the Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N 7th St in Garden City, KS from 9:00 – 10:45 AM on Saturday, September 21, 2019 followed by a graveside burial service at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City at 11:00 AM. The St. Mary Catholic Church Altar Society will host a reception at the VFW, 1101 West Mary St, in Garden City immediately after the burial.

Catherine was a Pro-Life advocate. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Right to Life or another Pro-Life cause.

Berniece E. Fry

Berniece E. Fry, 93, died on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at St Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born on June 14, 1926 at McCook, Nebraska the daughter of John & Zeta (Roberts) Fry.

Berniece grew up in Atwood and then attended Denver Women’s College and graduated with her Bachelor of Science from the University of Denver in 1952. She later earned her Master’s from Emporia State Teachers College. In 1952 she started teaching at Garden City High School where she also was the Kayettes Sponsor and Junior Class Sponsor and later Senior Class Sponsor.

In 1954 when Garden City Junior College moved to the high school building she started teaching for the college along with the high school. For the college she was the Guidance Councilor and Dean of Girls along with being the Campus Co-Ed Sponsor for the high school. In 1962 she started teaching full time for the college and was Dean Of Women along with teaching the college business classes. When the new campus was built she helped design the business classrooms. She retired in 1991 after 39 years of teaching in Garden City. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, Friends Of Lee Richardson Zoo, Finney County Historical Society, KARP, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority International & a life member of NEA. She enjoyed playing bingo, puzzles, traveling & eating out with friends. She was preceded in death by her Parents and infant Sister- Geraldine Fry.

She is survived by several cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 AM on Friday at Garnand Funeral Home with Rev Joel Plisek officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Atwood. Friends may call from Noon to 8:00 PM Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Garden City Community College Endowment Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
