Elsie Lea (Mays) Bryan

Elsie Lea (Mays) Bryan, 90, of Atwood, died November 18, 2017 at the Good Samaritan nursing home in Atwood. She was born October 22, 1927 at the family home near Beardsley, Kansas.

Elsie was the last survivor of the Charles and Mable Mays family, preceded in death by her parents and 7 siblings, and three husbands.

Elsie was orphaned at the age of six, and spent her formative years with a succession of relatives and friends.

At an early age she became a professional waitress and hostess, serving in many cities across the United States during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl years and World War Two.

Her career led her to Honolulu, where she became manager of a large hotel and resort chain. She led an exciting and charming life traveling the tropical Pacific for nearly four decades.

Upon retirement she returned to Northwest Kansas, to be with friends and family. Having no children, she is mourned by a multitude of nieces, nephews, neighbors and relatives.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held at the Atwood First Christian Church, on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. There will be no visitation or graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Rawlins County High School Band or Rawlins County 4-H, in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67701.

Wayne Thomas Zimmerman

Wayne Thomas Zimmerman, 84, Hays, died Thursday, November 16, 2017 at HaysMed.

He was born October 15, 1933 in Schoenchen the son of Matt and Clara (Wolf) Zimmerman.  He graduated from Schoenchen High School and Hutchinson Business College with a degree in bookkeeping.  On October 23, 1954 he was united in marriage to Arlene Braun in Victoria, and they celebrated over 40 years of marriage.  She preceded him in death on July 12, 1995.  He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Third Degree Council #4166 of Schoenchen and the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.  He was co-owner of High Plains Trucking and later opened Wayne’s Auto Glass where he worked until his retirement.  He enjoyed demolition derbies, playing cards, traveling to casinos and spending time with his family.  He was a grandfather and father figure to many and taught all of his grandchildren to drive. 

Survivors include two sons; Tom Zimmerman and John Zimmerman both of Hays, four daughters; Deb Geist, Sandy Haselhorst and husband Gary, Stephanie Zimmerman and husband Ron, and Brenda Zimmerman all of Hays, three brothers; Dennis Zimmerman and wife Becky of Hays, Sherman Zimmerman of Shawnee, Steve Zimmerman and wife Debbie of Topeka, two sisters; Elaine Schmidt and husband Jerry and Marjorie Augustine both of Hays, 20 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Arlene, an infant daughter; Theresa Zimmerman, a grandson; Chris Geist, two great grandchildren; Xavier Schuler and Brixton Zimmerman, a brother; Gordon Zimmerman and two sisters; Mary Ann Herl and Betty Leiker.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Monday, November 20, 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, with Fr. Barry Brinkman officiating.  Military honors will follow by the Hays VFW Honor Guard.  Private family burial will take place at a later date in the St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 10:45 on Monday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street.  The Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 pm until 6:30.  A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a combined Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 pm all on Sunday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested in Wayne’s memory to masses, to Via Christi Village, or to the Hays Field Office of the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs, in care of the funeral home.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com

Frances Ann Urban

GREAT BEND — Frances Ann Urban, 94, died Nov. 17, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born Jan. 30, 1923, at Liebenthal, the daughter of Mike and Magdalena (Herrman) Schaffer. She married Benedict Edward Urban Nov. 25, 1946, at Liebenthal. He died May 26, 1975. A Great Bend resident since 1974, coming from rural Bison, Mrs. Urban was a homemaker.

Mrs. Urban was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella, all of Great Bend.

Survivors include two sons, Darrel Urban and his wife Susan of Bison, and David Urban and his wife Debbie of Great Bend; two daughters, Darletha “Dar” Zimmerman and her husband Duane of Springfield, Mo., and Diane Parker and her husband Barry of Great Bend; one sister, Mary Schaffer of Wichita; 11 grandchildren, Dichelle Hatch and her husband Gene, Darin Urban and his wife Rachel, Douglas Scheck and his wife Kelly, Dustin Urban and his wife Gina, Dana McVey and her husband Joe, Jerrica Urban, Carrie Roberts, Dustin Parker and his wife Jenny, Josh Pitchford, Jenna Pitchford and Jeremy Pitchford; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three grandsons, Dexter Urban, Derreck Urban and Devin Urban; three brothers, Vincent Schaffer, Joe Schaffer and Mike Schaffer; and seven sisters, Bertha Moeder, Abbie Moeder, Martina Werth, Ludwina Haselhorst, Monica Unrein, Annie Price and an infant sister.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m., and Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m., Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be at 10 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore celebrating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials have been established with the Altar Society or for Masses, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Frances Agnes (Herrman) Ridler

Frances Agnes (Herrman) Ridler, age 94, of Hays passed away Thursday, November 16, 2017 in Castle Rock, Colorado.

She was born June 16,1923 in Liebenthal, Kansas.  She graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1941. She married George “Max” Ridler on June 28, 1944 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Fran took great pride in her leadership and volunteer positions as past President of the VFW Auxiliary, her many years as a volunteer for Hadley Hospital Auxiliary and she enjoyed playing golf.

She is survived by her three sons, Robert and wife Melody of Mannsville, NY, James and wife Donna of Buffalo, MN and Randy and wife Pam of Castle Rock, CO and son-in-law David Carey, Carlsbad, CA; five grandchildren, Marcella Ridler, Christopher Ridler, Michael Ridler, Ryan Ridler and Lance Ridler as well as 7 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Agnes Herrman, husband, Max and a daughter, Gladys Carey.

A Visitation and Recitation of the Rosary will be Wednesday, November 22, 10:00 am at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

Graveside service will be Wednesday, November 22, 11:30 am at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney.

Virginia Kaup

Phillipsburg resident Virginia Kaup passed away Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Oberlin, KS at the age of 87.

She was born in Smith County, KS on Oct. 15, 1930, the daughter of Samuel & Hazel (Cole) Wiehl. On Nov. 24, 1948 she married Robert Kaup in Smith Center. He preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 2000.

Survivors include her sons, Doug, of Phillipsburg, KS and Jeff, of Plainville, KS; her daughter, Elaine Jacobs, of Stuttgart, KS; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Chris Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Mrs. Kaup will lie in-state on Sunday from 5-9 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family greeting friends Monday evening from 6 – 8 p.m.

Jan M. Werth

Jan M. Werth, age 81, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at HaysMed in Hays, KS. Jan was born on October 29, 1936 in Hays, KS to Ben and Mabel (Bieler) Grabbe. She was a graduate of Hays High School. Jan enjoyed arts and crafts.

Survivors include her daughter, Millie Bickle and her husband Don Bickle, Jr. of Hays, KS; two grandchildren, Ryan Bickle and his wife Brenda, Lance Bickle and his wife Amanda all of Hays; four great-grandchildren, Ashton, Braiden, Alexis and Alayna of Hays.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Alvin J. Werth on July 24, 2001.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 3:00 PM at the Mt. Allen Cemetery in Hays, KS.

Robert Dean Brown

Victoria, Kansas – Robert Dean Brown, age 68, died Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at his home in Victoria, Kansas.

He was born December 1, 1948, in Ashland, Kansas to John M. and Irene (Brown) Brown. He married Lucy Ann (Dinkel) on August 5, 1967, in Victoria, Kansas.

He was an auto body repairman, painter and mechanic. He lived in Denver, CO, Sharon Springs, KS. and moved to Victoria, KS in 1980. He attended Brighton High School in Brighton, CO and a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas. Robert enjoyed restoring and working on Mustangs and his passion was building three wheeled motor cycles.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Ann Brown, of the home; one son, Michael Brown and wife, Blythe, Victoria, KS; three daughters, La Donna Braun and husband Frederick, Bunker. Hill, KS; Kimberly Brown and companion, Kenneth Kuntzsch, Russell, KS; Bobbie Phlieger and husband James, Plainville, KS; one sister, Jean Thompson and husband, Phillip, Midwest City, OK; 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 18, 2017, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas. Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.

Vigil service and rosary will be at 5:30 P.M. Friday, at Clines-Keithley Mortuary, 412 Main Street, Victoria, Kansas 67671.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. Friday, and from 8:30 to 9:45 A.M. Saturday both at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, Victoria, Kansas.

Daniel L. Norton

Daniel L. Norton of Osborne, passed away on July 20, 2017 in rural Osborne. He was born October 18, 1982 in Hays, KS to William Norton & Donna Henke.

Daniel graduated from high school. He was employed as a CNA at the Parkview Care Center in Osborne, KS. Daniel enjoyed fishing and working on cars in his spare time.

Daniel is preceded in death by his step-brother, Matthew Schauer. He is survived by his mother, Donna Henke of Osborne; father, William Norton of California.

Mary F. Keith

Mary F. Keith passed away Saturday, November 11, 2017 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas at the age of 89. She was born in Palco, Kansas on July 24, 1928 to the late Roland and Dora (Derousseau) Tremblay. She grew up and attended school in Palco. On November 23, 1948 she was united in marriage to Howard R. Keith in Damar, Kansas.

Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and neighbor. She enjoyed being around the people she loved, always telling jokes, and had a great sense of humor. Heaven help you if you fell victim to one of her April Fools’ Day pranks. She was an incredible cook, liked to embroider, worked in the fields during harvest, and was an avid gardener, known in certain circles as “The Orchid Lady” because of the beautiful orchids she grew. She loved all animals, but most especially her dog Brandi and her cat Mooch. But the greatest love of her life was her grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her children Brenda Holler of Salina, Rita Lill and husband Jon of Tonganoxie, Cleon Keith and wife Jolene of El Dorado, and Patti Thummel and husband Mike of Garden City; brother Ed Tremblay and wife Carolyn of Hill City; sisters Margarette Larson of Marquette, and Elaine Dockins and husband Dwight of Hill City; grandchildren Jenny (Lill) Mick, Jeremy Lill, Jessie (Lill) Lancaster, Shay Keith, Melissa Keith, Michael Thummel, Stephanie (Thummel) Schwindt, Kristen (Thummel) Manning, and Lanette (Thummel) Morgan; twelve step-grandchildren; children of her heart Gwen and Rick Lewis; sisters-in-law Arvilla Taylor and husband Harold of Hoxie, Edna Keith of Moses Lake, WA, and Coralie Keith Bise of Moses Lake, WA.

She was preceded in death by her parents Roland and Dora Tremblay, husband Howard Keith, brother Adrian Tremblay, and sister Madeline Keith.

The Prophet Isaiah reminded us, “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Mary was a woman who lived every day of her life, depending on her strength from the Lord, through faith. She raised her family with a heritage of love, grace, mercy, strength and faith that will live on for generations to come.

Funeral services will be at 10:00am on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery in Zurich. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00pm on Friday at the funeral home with Ladies Guild Rosary at 3:00pm and Prayer Vigil and Rosary at 7;00pm. Philip Leroy Bussen

Philip Leroy Bussen, 70, of Wallace, Kansas died at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, KS on November 13, 2017, after battling cancer for over two years.

Philip was born January 15, 1947, to Nick and Dorothy (Remus) Bussen in Goodland, Kansas.

He attended school at the Wallace Grade School and graduated from Wallace County High School in 1965. He was a farmer his entire life and retired a few years ago.

Philip was a talented woodworker and made several pieces of furniture and helped family members with many projects in his woodshop. He enjoyed collecting license plates, Model A’s and Model T’s and other antiques.

Philips greatest enjoyment was spending time with his nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews over the years.

He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the NRA.

He is survived by his mother, Dorothy, of Wallace and his brothers Theodore (Ted), Gilbert (Barb) and Virgil (Roxane) of Wallace and his sister Marilyn (Kent) Lorens of Stratton, Nebraska. Nieces and nephews – Anita McKain, Sister Catherine Bussen, Jenny Kuhlman, Jason Bussen, Timothy Bussen, Elizabeth Mazanec, Laura Bolen, Brett Bussen, Patrick, Michael, Rebecca, and Matthew Lorens and twenty great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by father Nick Bussen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 17, 2017 at 10:00 AM MT at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Sharon Springs, Kansas with Father Norbert Dlabal officiating. Interment will follow in the Wallace Cemetery, Wallace, Kansas.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM MT with a Vigil and Rosary service to begin at 7:00 PM MT at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Sharon Springs.

Memorials may be designated to Sisters, Servants of Mary Ministers of the Sick and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

Nick L. Norris

Phillipsburg resident Nick L. Norris, age 93, passed away Monday, November 13, 2017 in the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg.

He was born July 3, 1924 in Phillips County, KS the son of Elmer & Elizabeth (Morgan) Norris. He was a WWII Navy veteran.

He was united in marriage to Dolores L. Klink on August 27, 1950 in Phillipsburg. She preceded him in death in 2004.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Brenda in 1973.

Survivors include a son, Brent & wife, Beth and a granddaughter, Erika Norris all of Glade, KS; and 2 sisters, Eva Basil of Lawrence, KS and Lee Koehler of Alberta, Alabama.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 2017 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in the Belmont Cemetery, Phillips County, KS.

Mr. Norris will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.
