Martin J. ‘Matt’ Staab

Martin J. “Matt” Staab, age 87 of Hays, passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2017 in Hays. He was born May 10, 1930 in Catharine, Kansas to Alois and Rosa (Meier) Staab. On November 4, 1953 he married Georgine “Jeanie” Befort at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor, Kansas.

Matt had worked for C.O. Mammals Grocery Store for 37 years working in all areas including manager. After working at the grocery store he went to work for Fort Hays State University at Memorial Union with the custodial staff. Matt served in the Army National Guard and was a member of the American Legion, Immaculate Heart of Mary parish and the Knights of Columbus council 6984.

He enjoyed woodworking and being a handyman. He was also a baseball fan of the Kansas City Royals and had played for the Catharine Owls and the Hays Larks. Matt was a modest, hardworking family man who truly believed in his faith and family.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Georgine “Jeanie” Staab of the home in Hays; a son, Gary Staab of Hays; two daughters, Sherri Ruder and husband Rich of Munjor and Debbie Werth and husband Dave of Hays; eight grandchildren, Chad (Jackie) Ruder of Hays, Nichole (Randy) Sauer of Hays, Landon Staab of Boise, Idaho, Logan Staab of Hays, Brandon (Amanda) Werth of Liberty, Missouri, Matthew (Jen) Werth of Hays, Cory Werth and Tyler Werth of Hays as well as six great grandchildren, Shannon and Amy Ruder, Sadie, Connor, Bladyn and Bodhi Werth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Edwin, Walter, Lawrence and Alfred Staab and two sisters, Albertine “Tina” Goetz and Irene Rohr.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Monday, November 6, 2017 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday 4 PM – 8 PM and Monday 9 AM – 9:30 AM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Sunday a Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil service at 7 PM all at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Nicholas Church, HaysMed Hospice or Masses.

Brenda Sue Lene

Brenda Sue Lene, age 58, of Goddard, Kansas passed away at her home on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. She was born March 30, 1959 in Kirksville, Missouri to James A. and Sandra S. (Slaughter) Lene.

She is survived by her mother, Sandra Lene of Goddard; three daughters, Amanda Treadwell (Greg) of Goddard, KS, Stephanie Roeder (Bob) of Mt. Hope, KS; and Cassandra Warden of Wichita, KS; two brothers, James Lene and Charles Lene (Mindy) of Wichita, and Corinna Barron of Moberly, MO; her 9 grandchildren, Tori, Madison, Chase Treadwell, Luke, Lilly and Layla Roeder, Brendyn Polley, Serenity and Brayden Warden.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Lene; a brother, Tony Lene; a brother-in-law, Paul Barron and her grandparents.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 4th, 3:30pm at the First Baptist Church 627 S. James Ave. Maize, KS 67101 with Visitation from 2:00 PM until service time at the church. Private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Gerald (Jerry) Everett Herman

Gerald (Jerry) Everett Herman, 70, of Holiday Island, AR went to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, October 31st, 2017.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne, son Chad and daughter-in-law Kendall, daughter Stacia and son-in-law Lance, daughter Tara and son-in-law Matt. Also, his eight grandchildren: Baylor Herman, Linden Herman, Callan Herman, Soren Herman, Conner Thompson, Brock Thompson, Gavin Morrow, and Chase Morrow. Other survivors include his brother Chris Herman, and sister Eileen Brungardt, and several cousins, nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Jerry was born on January 29th, 1947 in Hays, KS to Henry and Bertha Herman. He attended school in Gorham, KS playing multiple sports and excelling at them all. After graduating high school he attended Fort Hays State University before enlisting in the Army. Jerry was a Captain in the Army and served in the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot. Later Jerry attended Kansas State University receiving a degree in Business Administration and obtained his CPA certification. He worked for 18 years for Becker Corporation in El Dorado, KS and Transplace Corporation in Stuttgart, AR for 20 years. He retired just 7 months ago.

Jerry married Dianne on May 27th, 1974 in Las Vegas. They raised three children together, Chad, Stacia and Tara. He took such pride in his kids and was very wary of any boys coming around to date his daughters. He loved spending time with his friends at the Country Club playing golf. He held season tickets to Kansas State football games, and enjoyed tailgating before and after games. In his later years, he enjoyed reading books, and scripture, and spending time with family and friends. He is well known for never missing a funeral. Jerry made it a point to stay connected to others and always helped whenever he saw someone in need. He was hardworking, a friend to everyone, full of wisdom and always honest. He was loved by all.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on Saturday, November 4th, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Freeman Heights Baptist Church in Berryville, AR. A viewing will take place on November 4th from 9:00-10:00 AM at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kansas State University Foundation. Vick L. Eitel

Vick L. Eitel, age 67, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on December 2, 1949, in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Murl Loyd & Willidean Burkhead Eitel. Vick was a lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas. Early in his career, he was worked in Construction and later he worked for Fairleigh Corporation of Scott City for 27 years where he was referred to as the Go To Guy.

He was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam conflict receiving the Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Army Commendation Medal and Air Medal. He was a member of the VFW and El Quartellejo Saddle Club all of Scott City, Kansas.

On February 17, 1998 he married Sandra Jackson in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives.

Joie Jack McCormick

Joie Jack McCormick was born on January 19, 1938 in Wichita, Kansas. The son of Esten Lee and Nellie Blanche (Reida) McCormick, he grew up on the family farm just a couple of miles south of Belmont, Kansas.

Joie Jack passed away in Wichita on October 29, 2017 at the age of 79 years, 9 months, and 10 days. Friends may register and view from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, with family present from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral is at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Harper, Kansas with Mike McGovney officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery north of Belmont.

Jean Leuszler

Logan resident Jean Leuszler passed away Monday, Oct. 30, 2017 at the Logan Manor in Logan, KS at the age of 92.

She was born in Norton County on August 31, 1925, the daughter of Herbert & Florence (Nuttycomb) Johnson.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Leuszler of Almena, KS; her daughter-in-law, Janet Leuszler of Odessa, FL; her sister, Joyce Eckhart of Logan; 2 step grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 3, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in the Logan Funeral Home, Logan, KS with Dixie L. Westervelt officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt Hope Cemetery, Almena, KS.

Edward ‘Ed’ Heronema

Edward “Ed” Heronema, of Hays, KS, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2017 at his home at the age of 73. Ed was born the son of William and Alvina (Rupp) Heronema on February 22, 1944 in Hays, KS. He attended school at Jefferson West Grade School in Hays. After his father’s passing, he received a scholarship to St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays and graduated in 1962. Ed married Joanna “Jo” DeMoss on January 30, 1988 in Pratt, KS. Together they shared 29 years of marriage.

Ed was a long-time chemical salesman in the oil industry. He had worked for C.O. Mammals, Tretolite Chemicals and retired in 2009 from Baker Hughes. He was a St. Joseph’s Council 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Member, Sons of the VFW and Sons of the American Legion. Ed loved spending time riding his Trike Motorcycle, being with his wife and family and will be remembered for being a quick-witted salesman.

Survivors include his beloved wife of the home, Jo Heronema of Hays; three sons, Lee Heronema and his wife Jennifer of Midland, MI, Myron Heronema of Garland, TX, Mike Heronema and his wife Carmen of Mustang, OK; step-son, Terry Wilbourn of Brush, CO; daughter, Marla Heronema of Derby, KS; step-daughter, Sherri Bottom and her husband Darren of Little River, KS; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leroy Heronema

Christine C. Evans

Christine C. Evans, age 100, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2017 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.  She was born on January 24, 1917 in Labette County, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Walton Worley & Minnie Christina Erika Englund Worley.  A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1966 moving from Augusta, Kansas, she was a Elementary School Teacher.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On August 2, 1939 she married Orson Evans in Wichita, Kansas.  He passed away on November 28, 1990 in Denver, Colorado.

Survivors Include her son, Richard O. Evans and daughter-in-law Esther Cho of Littleton, Colorado;
Grandchildren  David Evans of Englewood, Colorado; Rebecca Nordquist and son-in-law Mel Nordquist of Fieldbrook, California.  Great Grandchildren Robert Nordquist; Anna Nordquist; Sean Nordquist; and Michael Nordquist, all of Fieldbrook, California; and one brother, Ellwyn Worley of Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and two sons, Donald Evans and Robert Evans; six brothers and two sisters.

Jimmie Lee Bailey

Jimmie Lee Bailey, age 62, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.  He was born on June 26, 1955, the son of Vernon Eugene and Dorothy Louise Brown Bailey.  He was a resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1990 moving from Newton, Kansas.
On May 22, 1993 he married Betty Ivey in Scott City, Kansas.  She survives.

James ‘Jim’ Opat

James “Jim” Opat, age 75, of WaKeeney, passed away Monday, October 30, 2017.  He was born July 6, 1942, near Ransom, Kansas, to Joseph John and Anna (Engelbrecht) Opat.

Jim most recently worked as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.  He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, the VFW, and American Legion, all in WaKeeney.  Jim served our country in the United States Army.  Jim was a “no frills” kind of man, but he always enjoyed being with family and couldn’t pass up a good game of Bingo.  He will be missed by many family and friends.

Survivors include three siblings, Mary Deines, Eugene Opat, and Barbara Opat, all of WaKeeney; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” and husband Jack Fry, Dorothy Ann and husband Curtis Mong; a brother-in-law, Vernie Deines; and a niece, Karen Fry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 3, 2017 at Christ the King Catholic Church.  Family will be available to receive friends one hour prior to mass at the church parish center.  Cremation was chosen.  Inurnment with military honors will take place at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney.
