Clinton H. ‘Clint’ Kuhn

Clinton H. “Clint” Kuhn, 86, died Oct. 13, 2017, at Almost Home, Inc., Great Bend. He was born Aug. 26, 1931, at Hays, the son of Herman and Hilda (Linenberger) Kuhn. He married Leona Weigel May 3, 1954, at Victoria. A Great Bend resident since 1954, Mr. Kuhn worked for Thies Packing, Orscheln’s and Plating, Inc. He was a United States Air Force veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Kuhn was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and American Legion Argonne Post 180, both of Great Bend. He enjoyed gardening, yard work and feeding the squirrels.

Survivors include his wife, Leona Kuhn, of the home; four sons: Jed Kuhn and his wife Paula of Great Bend, Brad Kuhn and his wife Janet of Great Bend, Craig Kuhn of Kansas City, Mo., and Doug Kuhn and companion Konny of Great Bend; seven grandchildren, Gabriel Hardman and his wife Lana, Jacob Hardman and his fiancée Randi, Phillip Kuhn, Andrew Kuhn, Chris Kuhn and his wife DeAnn, Brendan Kuhn and his fiancée Kayla and Manion Kuhn; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Marjorie Pancost.

Vigil service will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. William J. ‘Bill’ Maske

William J. “Bill” Maske, 75, of Russell, Kansas, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Bill was born on February 28, 1942, in Selden, Kansas, the son of William, Sr. and Mae (Stacey) Maske. He grew up in Selden and attended local schools and lived in Sheridan County, Kansas until he was married. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Loretta Bieker on July 13, 1963 in Grainfield, Kansas. From this union they were blessed with 3 children, 2 sons Kevin and Terry and a daughter Tracey. He worked as a feedmill supervisor and in hog operations in Sharon Springs, Kansas. He also worked for KDOT in Sharon Springs, Kansas and Lindsborg, Kansas. He was a member of the Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting, watching sports and playing his guitar. He especially enjoyed Kansas University Basketball, Kansas City Royals Baseball, car racing and working on lawn mowers.

Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Loretta of the home; sons, Terry Maske (Sharene) and Kevin Maske all of Grand Island, Nebraska; and daughter Tracey Nabity (Phillip) of Denton, Texas; brothers Tom Maske and Gene “Ed” Maske and 2 step sisters; grandchildren Reece Maske, Sha’nera Maske, Justin Salpas, Nathan Salpas, Kristi Parke and Phillip “P.J.” Nabity.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert Maske and Clifford Maske and granddaughter Dariawna Maske.

A Funeral Mass to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell with Father Michael Elan officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Russell, Kansas. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday, October 16, 2017 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Memorial has been established with the Russell Regional Hospital. Dodie Lynn (Lewis) Basgall

HAYS- Dodie Lynn (Lewis) Basgall, 54, of Hays, KS, passed away Friday, October 13, 2017 at Hays Medical Center. She was born December 16, 1962 in Manhattan, KS the daughter of John Lewis and Mary (Anderson) Sheffert.

Dodie was a passionate gardener; she had a keen knowledge of horticulture, creating lush home gardens of both flowers and produce every summer.

She was a jack of all trades, having been an EMT, cosmetologist and a truck driver for Navajo. She was also a homemaker, worked construction, and worked in asphalt maintenance for Stripe and Seal. For many years she was a caregiver for autistic savant, Erik Warren, it was her favorite occupation.

Dodie, like her father and grandmother before her, was a proud member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

She married and divorced both Michael Miller and Randy Basgall, from which unions she had 3 children.
Survivors include her mother, Mary Sheffert of Marshalltown, IA; a daughter, Marlowe Basgall (Christopher Hannon) of Hays, KS; 2 sons, Charles Miller (Erica) of Lynn Valley, KS and Isaac Basgall of Wichita, KS; 2 sisters, Mary “Jo” Cherveny of Toledo, IA and Edna Kay Kruger of Topeka, KS; a brother, Armond Fielder of Des Moines, IA, 2 grandchildren, Sophia and Jacob Miller, and her charming cattle-dog, Zeus.

Dodie was preceded in death by her father, John Harold Lewis, and her beloved dog Autumn.

Raymond Bongartz, age 78, of Ogallah, passed away Friday, October 13, 2017 at Hays Medical Center.

Alvin Dean Lawrence

Alvin Dean Lawrence passed away Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Wilson care and Rehabilitation Center in Wilson, Kansas at the age of 57. He was born on August 23, 1960 in Lucas, Kansas to John and Lillian (Bricker) Lawrence. As a young boy, he was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Wilson.

Alvin worked in the oilfield and had previously managed Ed’s Express Service Station in Wichita. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing whenever possible. He also liked to take his metal detector out, looking for little treasures wherever they might be.

Alvin is survived by his father John Lawrence of Wilson; brothers Don Lawrence and wife Judy of Omaha, NE, and Ron Lawrence of Dorrance; sister Virginia “Ginny” Hubka and husband Ron of Wilson; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother Lillian Lawrence, and brother John Lawrence, Jr.

Alvin was a loving son, brother, uncle, and cousin. He was a big man with an even bigger heart, and the he will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.

Cremation was chosen by the family. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at First Lutheran Church in Dorrance. Inurnment will follow in the Dorrance City Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Andrew Lynn Richmeier, age 43, of Hays passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Hays Medical Center.

Elvira Lee Gehring

Plainville – Elvira Lee Gehring, 72, passed away Friday, October 13, 2017 at Rooks County Heath Center, Plainville, KS.

She was born April 22, 1945 in Lucas, KS, the daughter of Ray Vaughn and Bernice (Williams) Gehring.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Elvira is survived by her son Bernie Gehring & wife Hollie of Wylie, TX; a brother Marion Gehring & wife LaDonna of Newton and three granddaughters, Cheyenne Gehring of College Station, TX, Sonni Gehring and Tatum Gehring both of Wylie, TX.

A celebration of Elvira’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at the First Baptist Church, 100 S. Washington, Plainville, KS, with Pastor Todd Bohrer presiding. Mildred L. Sauer

The Janousek Funeral Home of La Crosse, Kansas, has announced Funeral Services for Mildred L. Sauer, 92, of La Crosse, Kansas, will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, October 16, 2017, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse.

Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery.

Beth Galloway

Beth Galloway, longtime resident of WaKeeney, Kansas, departed this life on September 26, 2017.  Her sweet and infectious smile and gentle nature will long be remembered.  Bernita “Beth” was born to Bill and Myrtle Dwyer Clark on June, 1, 1922 in Asherville, Kansas.  At the age of twelve she moved with her family to WaKeeney. 

Beth married Bob Galloway in California on February 4, 1944.  Bob shipped out to England shortly thereafter where he was stationed during WWII.  She and Bob were both graduates of Trego County High School.  They were very proud of their hometown and lived in WaKeeney all of their married life, raising four children there.

Beth was very active in the Presbyterian Church – singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, serving as an officer for UPW, and playing the organ for church services for nearly fifty years.  Her beautiful handwriting adorns the church book of records.  She belonged to Chapter CT of P.E.O. and served as an officer many times over in her seventy plus years of membership. 

Beth enjoyed sewing, was an excellent cook, and had a knack for home-decorating.  She made beautiful clothes for herself and her daughters.  Her handiwork included cross-stitched samplers and patchwork quilts. In 2003 Beth began playing piano at the WaKeeney Long Term Care facility while Bob was a resident until his death in 2006.

In 2009 Beth moved from WaKeeney to Louisburg, Kansas and lived with daughter, Julie and son-in-law, Randy Newcomer for a time.  She joined the Christian Church of Louisburg and took part in bible study and church services.  In 2010 she moved to Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kansas where she enjoyed an apartment, made new friends and participated in many activities – proving to be a whiz at word games.  She enjoyed a large family gathering for her ninetieth birthday.  Her last home has been at Bickford of Overland Park.

Beth is survived by her sister, Jean Stevens (Leland) of Taylor, Texas; four children – Mike Galloway (Sherry) of WaKeeney; Jack Galloway (Anna) of Port Angeles, WA; Janie Anderson of Columbia, MO, Julie Newcomer (Randy) of Louisburg, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.

Thirteen surviving grandchildren include John Galloway (Kate), Lewis Galloway (Jamie), Joel Mermis (Carrie), Angie Mermis, Philip Galloway (Rachel); Dan Galloway (Kelli); James Anderson (Cherryl), Ben Anderson (Julie), Julie Anderson, and  Molly Caton (Jason); Kellie Bledsoe (Clint), Annie McMahill (Jeff),

and Scott Newcomer (Rachel).

Surviving twenty-seven great grandchildren include Vivi, Mimi and Stella Galloway; Will, Harper and Annie Galloway; Mikiah Mermis; Mason and Ethan Mermis, Mollie Galloway; Brennan Galloway, Olivia and Ryan Galloway; Clark, Lily and Ayla Anderson; Grace, Russell and Maggie Mae Anderson, Oscar Caton ; Ruby and June Bledsoe;  Clara and Josie Benskin, Madeline, Danielle and Sean McMahill.

Beth is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Myrtle Clark, her husband, Bob Galloway, and her grandson, Marc Galloway.

A family hosted memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 21, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, WaKeeney.

Darlene B. Farr

Darlene B. Farr, 85, Hays, died Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at the Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas.

She was born May 25, 1932 in Stockton, Kansas one of four daughters to Earl and Opal (McComb) Buss. A graduate of Stockton High School in 1949, she was united in marriage to Charles D. “Charlie” Farr on August 28, 1949 at the United Methodist Church in Stockton. The celebrated 67 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 3, 2016. She was a homemaker, wife, and mother, an excellent seamstress, cook, and gardener, and she was a steadfast family matriarch, a motivator and caregiver that loved her family and extended family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hays.

Survivors include two daughters; Karol Chaffee and Jerry Wilson of WaKeeney and Cindy Farr of Ogallah, and two grandsons; Brent Chaffee and Neal Chaffee, both of Hays, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charlie, a son Charles Alan Farr, and three sisters; Twila Carpenter, Doris Cunningham, and Earlyne Ives.

A celebration of Darlene’s life will be at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 16, 2017 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, with Pastor Troy Buss officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until service time on Monday at the funeral home. Luella M. Augustine

Hays, Kansas – Luella M. Augustine, age, 77, died Thursday, October 12, 2017, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. She was born August 5, 1940, on the farm east of Munjor, Kansas, to Melchior and Cecilia (Unrein) Gabel. She married Robert L. Augustine on September 5, 1959 at Munjor, Kansas.

She worked at Fort Hays State University for 30 years. Luella was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and was a 1958 graduate of Girls Catholic High both of Hays, Kansas. Being crafty she enjoyed quilting, embroidery, and counted cross stitch. She especially enjoyed celebrating Christmas and her family.

Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Augustine, of the home; one son, Kevin Augustine and wife, Donna, Hays, KS; one daughter, Karla Harrison and husband, John, Point of Rocks, MD; three brothers, Harold Gabel and Ernest Gabel, both of Dodge City, KS; Gene Gabel and wife, Rita, Hays, KS; one sister, Norma Huser, Vincent, KS; one sister-in-law, Mary Jane Gabel, Wichita, KS; three grandchildren, Schuyler Augustine, Katelyn and Jennifer Harrison.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Donald Gabel and one sister, Mildred Linenberger.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas. Inurnment will be at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery, Munjor, Kansas.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas with a rosary service at 9:40 A.M. Tuesday at the church.
