Lillian M. Staab

Lillian M. Staab, 89, Hays, died Monday, August 28, 2017 at Via Christi Village Long Term Care.

She was born April 1, 1928 in Hyacinth, Kansas the daughter of Frank and Catherine (Schuckman) Ubert. On June 8, 1959 she was united in marriage to Francis J. “Frank” Staab in Hyacinth. He preceded her in death on August 2, 2006. She was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the VFW Post #9076 Women’s Auxiliary.

Survivors include a brother; Wilfred “Fritz” Ubert of Arvada, Colorado and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers; William, Alphonse, Robert, Victor, Francis, and Walter Ubert and four sisters; Ida Goetz, Hilda Jacques, Eleanor Ross, and Sally Molleker.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, with Fr. Barry Brinkman officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until service time on Wednesday at the church. Daniel A. Guzman

Daniel A. Guzman, 38, Hays, died Friday, August 25, 2017 at his home in Hays.

He was born May 18, 1979 in Nombre De Dios, Durango Mexico to Eduardo and Martha (Torres) Guzman. On August 30, 2008 he was united in marriage to Irene Benavidez at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays. He worked for Midwestern Pipeworks, Inc., making pipes for the oilfield. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and loved going to the lake, camping, cooking, and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; Irene Guzman of Hays, his mother; Martha Torres of Hays, three sons; Demitre Guzman of Hays, Leonardo Benavidez of Hays, and A.J. Martinez of El Dorado, KS, five daughters; Marlena Guzman, Ieesha Guzman, and Domonique Benavidez, all of Hays, Monique Singleton of Missouri, and Azariah Redding of Bushton, KS, a brother; Ronaldo Garcia of Hays, two sisters; Viviana Guzman- Maldonado and husband Hernan of Hays, and Adriana Guzman of Hays, and fourteen grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father; Eduardo Guzman, a brother; Omar Eduardo Guzman, and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Friday, September 1, 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, with Fr. Fred Gatschet, Fr. Barry Brinkman, Fr. Leo Blasi, and Deacon Dave Kisner officiating. Cremation will follow the services and inurnment will be at a later date. Visitation will be begin at 3:00 pm on Thursday at the church and continue through the night and will be from 8:00 am until service time on Friday at the church. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Lauretta Virginia Jones

Lauretta Virginia Jones, 97, died August 25, 2017 at Pine Village, Mound Ridge, Kansas. She was born on October 29, 1919 in Swanton, Vermont the daughter of Alfred and Jessie Fletcher Brow.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. at the Utica Methodist Church followed by burial in the Utica Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Visitation with the family will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City on Friday, September 1, 2017 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Rose Mary Goetz

Rose Mary Goetz was born December 29, 1923 to Anton and Elenora (Heier) Ochs. She passed away August 25, 2017 at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in Wakeeney at the age of 93.

Rose Mary was born in rural Park, KS where she lived all her life. She attended school through 8th grade. On February 12, 1946, she was united in marriage to Leo Joseph Goetz at the Sacred Heart Church in Park where they remained faithful members. In 2008, her husband passed and she moved to Grainfield. In 2015, she moved to the Logan Co. Manor due to health issues.

Rosie was a homemaker and worked by her husband’s side on the farm as they raised their 8 children. She loved the farm life, which included stacking bales, milking cows, raising chickens, butchering, making noodles, gardening & canning She was proud to have a cellar full of food which showed her labor of love as a farmwife and mother. She also enjoyed making quilts & sewing. You could find her hand made sewing projects at craft shows in the area. When her children and grandchildren came to join in butchering, noodle making, or helping with a craft project, she had a huge smile and so proud to share her talents with them to carry on family traditions.

Rosie was very active in the Sacred Heart Church and Altar Society. She organized a group of ladies to serve a meal for the local AA’s on special occasions, helped with many funeral and Annual Father’s Day dinners.

She is survived by five daughters, Rowena (Duane) Zook of Salina, Elaine (Rick) Craft of Sedan, Janet (late Larry) Farmer of Oakley, Ellen (Ron) Eberle of Grainfield, and Eileen (Don) Hockersmith of Oklahoma City, OK.

Three sons; Albert (Kay) Goetz of Park, Edward (Denice) Goetz of Grainfield, Dean (Renae) Goetz of Hill City: Eighteen grandchildren: Loren Zook, Bruce Zook, Mollie Schell, Eric Craft, Sue Wendelbo, Diane Farmer-Hoeb, Terry Farmer, Brian Eberle, Kim Rumback, Mason Hockersmith, Ryan Hockersmith, Doug Goetz, David Goetz, Tyler Goetz, Tiffany Flieg, Trisha Bengston, Sara Bernhardt, and Marcus Goetz; Eighteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Rosie is also survived by two brothers Leo Ochs, Quinter and Billy Ochs, Park. She is preceded in death by her husband Leo; Son-in-law Larry Farmer: 3 brothers John, Pete & Stephen Ochs, 3 sisters Susanna Zerr, Anna Mary Zerr, & Esther Tanguay.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30, Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Park. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening, from 5 to 7 with a parish vigil to follow at 7 p.m. Both will be at the funeral home in Quinter.

Theda Blythe Carman was born on February 27, 1928, in Colby, Kansas to Christmas Carol Carman and Edith (Brainard) Carman. She passed away Thursday August 24, 2017, at Sheridan County Health Complex LTC to be with her Lord and Savior in Heaven.

Theda was the third daughter of four siblings raised on the family farm north of Selden. She attended Selden Grade School and graduated from Selden Rural High School.

On April 6, 1949, Theda was united in marriage to Fred McKee at the Selden United Methodist Church. They lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, for a year working in a watch factory. They then made their home in Selden where they lived most of their life. In that union, Fred and Theda were blessed with 3 daughters and 2 sons. They later moved to Hoxie, Kansas, to be closer to their children. After Fred passed away in 2012, Theda moved to the Ridgewood Manor. She resided there until her illness.

She was a member of the Selden Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She had many hobbies in her past time. These included crocheting, cooking, gardening, and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Above all she was a homemaker. She devoted her life to making a loving home for her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family. Wherever Theda resided she always welcomed everyone into her home as Family, especially those friends at Ridgewood Manor.

Theda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred; daughter, Candace May; and two sisters, Carol Hill and Barbara Spurgeon.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Gail and Dale Smith of Colona, Illinois, and Rhonda and Ed Miller of Hoxie, Kansas; two sons, Matt McKee of Lakin, Kansas and Jack McKee of Hoxie, Kansas; brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Helen Carman of Selden, Kansas; nine grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Carol F. Olliff

Norton resident Carol F. Olliff passed away Aug. 24 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE at the age of 78. She was born July 30, 1939 in Garfield County, NE, the daughter of Leland & Freda (Kiehl) Drake.

Survivors include her husband Norman, her son Verland and her daughter Sheila Engel all of Norton; her sister, Rita Briggs of Hastings, NE and 5 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wed. August 30, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in the Norton Christian Church, Norton, with Pastor Larry Lyles officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wed. in the Sweet Home Cemetery, Lebanon.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carol F. Olliff Memorial Fund.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Monday and 9:00 to 9:00 Tuesday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Shaylena Gitchel

Shaylena Gitchel of Hays, formerly of Phillipsburg, passed away August 24, 2017 at the Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO at the age of 12.

She was born February 21, 2005 in Hays, KS the daughter of Dustin Gitchel & Elizabeth Maness.

Survivors include her father, Dustin Gitchel & fiancé, Angela Barclay of Hays; mother, Liz Maness of Magnolia, AR; grandparents, Rick & Sharolyn Gitchel of Phillipsburg, Doug & Bettie Meade of Shoenchen, Evert & Donna Cox of Wichita; Great Grandmother, Velma Snow of Phillipsburg; & numerous, aunt, uncles, other relatives & friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at the Heartland Worship Center, Agra, with Pastor Monte Brunner officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Shaylena will lie in-state on Sunday, Aug. 27, from 5 – 9 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 28, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, where the family will greet friends Monday evening from 6 – 8 p.m.

Thomas Robert Docking

Thomas Robert Docking was born on August 10, 1954, in Lawrence, Kansas, and died Thursday, August 24, in Wichita.

He is survived by the love of his life, Jill Sadowsky Docking; son, Brian (Emily) Docking; daughter, Margery Docking; two granddaughters, Charlotte and Jane Docking; and brother William (Judy) Docking of Arkansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Governor Robert and Meredith Gear Docking; and his grandparents, Governor George R. and Virginia Docking and George and Irene Gear.

Tom grew up in Arkansas City, moving to Topeka when his father was elected Governor. He graduated from Topeka West High School and the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics, a Juris Doctor and a Master of Business Administration. Tom was a partner at the Law Offices of Morris, Laing, Evans, Brock & Kennedy, Chtd., where he specialized in taxation, business and estate planning, and banking and commercial law. In April of this year, Tom was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Citation from the University of Kansas School of Law.

Tom was a fourth-generation Kansan and demonstrated his love for Wichita and Kansas through his commitment to service. He was elected Lieutenant Governor and served one term from 1983-1987 with Governor John Carlin. He served as Chairman of the United Way of the Plains and on various Boards, including the Wichita Downtown Development Corporation and the Wichita Water Conservation Task Force. Tom also served on the Board of Union State Bank of Arkansas City, KS and City Bank and Trust of Guymon, OK, two family owned banks that have been in the Docking and Gear families for generations.

Tom and Jill were named Outstanding Philanthropists of the Year in 2008 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Greater Wichita Chapter. He recently co-chaired the successful billion-dollar Far Above Campaign for the University of Kansas Endowment Association. Tom’s legacy will live on through the family, friends, clients and University that he loved so dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, August 29, at Botanica, the Wichita Gardens, at 10:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in Tom’s name to The United Way of the Plains: 245 N. Verne Giesick

Verne Giesick, age 94, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at his home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on January 14, 1923 in Otis, Kansas, the son of Charles & Elsie Avis Giesick. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1964, moving from Palco, he was a Plant Supervisor for Kinder Morgan until retirement.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Scott City, Kansas, The Republican Party and Senator Bob Dole Campaign Member.

On June 6, 1943 he married Carol L. Schlegel in Otis, Kansas. She passed away on March 12, 1999 in Denver, Colorado.

Survivors include his one Daughter In Law – Eyra Giesick of Scott City, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife – Carol Giesick , One Son – Stewart Giesick and Two Grandchildren – Boris Giesick & Melody Giesick.

Memorials may be made to Scott Community Foundation in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

There will be no calling times.

Inurnment will be in the Otis Cemetery in Otis, Kansas at a later date and time.
