Triston Lee Werth

Triston Lee Werth, 19, Hays, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2017 in Houston, Texas.

He was born May 25, 1998 in Hays the son of Misty Ann Casper and Doug Francis Werth. A 2016 graduate of Hays High School, he was a manager at Taco Grande in Hays and a student ready to begin his sophomore year at Fort Hays State University. Triston possessed a very adventurous spirit, always ready for new experiences. He loved life, had a big heart, was very caring for others and he was always smiling and willing to help anyone. He enjoyed researching unusual coins and rocks, and he liked fishing and fossil hunting. His latest passion was photography and he liked to play Frisbee golf, hangout with friends, and spend time with his grandparents.

Survivors include his parents; Misty Hynes and husband Dustin of Hays and Doug Werth and fiancé Lisa Scheve of Hays; a brother; Andrew Werth of Hays, three sisters; Allison Werth, Brynn Hynes, and Kynlee Hynes, all of Hays, grandparents; Steve and Joyce Werth of Schoenchen and Tom and Debbie Casper of Hays, Izene Hynes of Hays and Terry Scheve of Hays, great grandparents; Paul and Juliana Urban of Victoria, and Martina Werth of Hays, aunts and uncles; Jennifer Casper and husband Chris, Sarah Struckman and husband Tylor, Melissa Jackson and husband Brian, Damian Werth and wife Megan, and Andrea Briney, and numerous great aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; Mike Hynes and Pat Scheve, and great-grandparents; Ralph Werth, Pete and Lorine Brungardt, and Don and Edna Casper.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 215 W. 13th Street, with Fr. Fred Gatschet officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday at the church and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Tuesday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine St. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Monday at the church. Frances Louise Parker

Frances Louise Parker, 95, peacefully passed away in the care of Harry Hynes Hospice, Wichita, Kansas in Saturday, August 12, 2017.  Frances was a devoted, loving mother and grandmother.  She enjoyed bringing the family together at her home in Hays, especially during the holidays.  She was always quick to smile and her sense of humor brought smiles to others.

She was a lifelong resident of Hays and Ellis County, before moving to the Wichita Catholic Care Center. Frances was born March 16, 1922 at her parents’ farm in Buckeye Township, Ellis County.  Frances was one of the few surviving great grandchildren of Jacob “Schulmeister” Schmidt, a leader in the establishment of the German-Russian immigrant community in Catharine, Kansas.  She married Edward L. Parker on January 5, 1942 in St. Severin Church. Soon he was called to serve in World War II. During the War, Frances volunteered at the USO providing support for soldiers on the home front while taking care of their young baby and home. After the War, Frances and Eddie were active in veterans’ organizations throughout their lives.  Eddie suffered a fatal heart attack in 1967 and Francis was once more on her own. She was a long-time hostess at the Vagabond Restaurant in Hays.  She was a member of The Daughters of Isabella, and the VFW Auxiliary.

Frances was one of 12 children born to Raymond A. and Dorothy Leikam Schmidt. Surviving are her, daughters Mary Beth Allen (Leon Jacobs) and Karen Herrman (John O’Loughlin), sister, Lillian Bennet, grandchildren; Karl, Tom, Cristi, David, Anne and Corey, 15 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.  Her daughter, Bonni Goldsberry and son, Stan Parker preceded her in death, along with her grandson Andrew Herrman, her parents and brothers Clarence, Marcellus, Elmer, Ben, Alfred, Dan and Willard and sisters, Martina Maska, Mary Esther Munk, and Annabelle Lietz.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 6-8 P.M. A Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary service will be at 6:30 P.M., a Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be at 6:45 P.M., followed by a vigil at 7:00 P.M. all being held at the Brock’s Keithley Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 2509 Vine St., Hays, KS 67601.

Philip M. Cawthon

Philip M. Cawthon, age 70, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at his home in Scott City, Kansas.  He was born on September 15, 1946 in Lamar, Colorado, the son of Marion D. & Donna L. Malone Cawthon.  A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 2006 moving from Ulysses, Kansas, he was retired from Williams Natural Gas Company where he worked as a Operator for over 47 years.
 
He was a member of the VFW and American Legion and was a US Navy Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.
 
On October 28, 1999 he married Marilyn Laney in Garden City, Kansas.  She survives.
 
Survivors include his Wife – Marilyn Cawthon of Scott City, Kansas, Four Daughters – Kim & Harold Deaton of Garden City, Kansas, LuCinda & Gene Ellis of Port Aransas, Texas, Lauri Lira of LeMars, Iowa, Paulette & Larry Titus of Canyon City, Colorado, One Son – Marvin & Lori Knoll of Chanute, Kansas,  One Sister – Debi & Gary Morgan of Canyon City, Colorado, Fifteen Grandchildren and Twenty Six Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, One Sister and One Brother In Law.
Graveside memorial service will be held at a later date in the Lakin Cemetery in Lakin, Kansas.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Wounded Warrior Project in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Scott M. Clark

Scott M. Clark, 42, Hays, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2017 in an accident in the 1400 block of 160th Ave.

He was born March 4, 1975 in Hays the son of Jim and Kathy (Ulmer) Clark. He graduated from Hays High School in 1993 and from Fort Hays State University with a BS in Biology in 1998. He was a cub scout with Troop 101 and worked for the FHSU Dairy Farm while he was in college. He also worked for the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism, Hillside Veterinary Clinic, Lomato’s Pizza, Heartland Tank Service, and was a lifeguard for many years at Hays pools while in high school.

He was an avid, lifelong Kansas City Royals and Chiefs fan, and he loved music, animals, hunting, fishing, playing cards, football, and being with his friends. He was an avid outdoorsman and often remarked that Sunday was his hunting day. He enjoyed bowling, softball, dart league, grilling, and was “Coach Clark” for many years with the Hays Football Association Gamblers football team. Scott’s dog was his faithful companion, going everywhere and doing everything with him.

Survivors include his parents; Jim Clark and wife Corrine of Hays and Kathy Clark of Hays, two brothers; Jason Clark and wife Theresa of Hays and Brad Clark and wife Amber and their two children, Sam and Nick Clark, all of Kansas City, Kansas, a step-grandmother; Karen Thompson of Hutchinson, Kansas, his dog Cheyenne, and numerous Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; Dean and Erma Ulmer and John and Phyllis Clark.
A Celebration of Scott’s life will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, 305 W. 7th Street, with Reverend Michael Rose officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, and from 10:00 am until service time on Saturday at the church.

Rickie Owen ‘Rick’ Covalt

Rickie Owen “Rick” Covalt, 65, of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away August 11, 2017 from cancer.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 17, at Langsford Funeral Home from 11:30-12:30pm, service at 12:30, and burial to follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Disable American Veterans.

Rick was born June 5, 1952 in Norton, KS, the 4th child and the 1st son of Roy Isaac and Beryl Arlene Montgomery Covalt. He spent his years in the Studley, KS area, graduated from Hoxie High School and attended Goodland Vo-Tech, before joining the US Air Force in January 1973. He served honorably for 26 years before retiring in January 1999 at the rank of SMSGT. He then worked as a CAD Designer for SPX Cooling Technologies for 15 years. Rick married Natalia Shevchenko on February 22, 2003.

He enjoyed fishing and most all sports, especially golf, was a skilled woods craftsman and made many furniture and decorative items, and was a member of the VFW. He is preceded in death by his parents; paternal grandparents, William and Myrtle Covalt; and maternal grandparents, Herbert and Leta Montgomery. Survivors include his wife, Natalia, of the home; daughter, Victoria Shevchenko; grandson, Alex Shevchenko, Overland Park, KS; brother, Galen Covalt, Hill City, KS; sisters, Beverely (Robert) Haley, Salina, KS, Carla (Robert) Chadwick, Oakley, KS, and Judy (Wayne) Connelly, Cabor, AR; best friends, David and Kathie Rogers; numerous nieces and nephews; an uncle; and two aunts.

Richard ‘Dick’ Siegrist

Richard “Dick” Siegrist, 90, died August 13, 2017, at his home. He was born February 22, 1927, in Hutchinson, to Melvin ‘Shorty’ and Frances (French) Siegrist.

Dick graduated from Partridge High School in 1945. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of the Nickerson Masonic Lodge #43. Dick retired as a farmer and stockman.

On January 7, 1951, he married Evelyn Mae Loeppke in Hutchinson. She died October 26, 2007.

Dick is survived by: daughters, Jennifer Scofield (Bill) of Wichita; Janet Hilgers (Rich) of Sterling; grandchildren, Julie Hanschu (Shamus Partain), Randy Hilgers; Ricky Hilgers (Cindy); great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Evelyn Hanschu, Leigha and Lucas Hilgers; and brother-in-law, Glen Loeppke (Roxanne) of Shell Knob, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers-in-law, Gene and Loren Loeppke.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 18, 2017, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Shelby Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in Partridge Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary. Diane E. Stutterheim

Prairie View resident Diane E. Stutterheim passed away Monday, August 14, 2017 at the Norton County Hospital, Norton, at the age of 64.

She was born February 8, 1953 in Norton, KS, the daughter of Henry F. & Dorothy F. (Shearer) Edgett.

She was united in marriage to Roy Stutterheim on September 3, 1988 in Prairie View. He survives.

Other survivors include her son, Ross of Overland Park; daughter, Trudy Mapes of Hays; her father, Henry Edgett of Norton; brother, Wayne Morford of Phillipsburg; sister, Nyla Gebhard of Long Island, KS; mother-in-law, Carolene Stutterheim of Phillipsburg; and 3 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 19, 2017 in the Prairie View Reformed Church in Prairie View with Pastor Aaron Rust officiating. Burial will follow in the Prairie View Cemetery.

Mrs. Stutterheim will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday & Friday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS 67661, where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday evening for visitation.

Norman ‘Darrell’ Smith

Norman “Darrell” Smith, age 66, of Ellis, passed away following cardiac complications at Hays Medical Center on August 9, 2017. Darrell was born in Hays on April 4, 1951, to Norman and Teddy (Wyatt) Smith. He graduated from Ellis High School and attended Washburn University where he played for the basketball team. Darrell settled in Ellis, married Linda Vanaken, and together they raised five children.

He worked in construction for twenty years, and then worked in plumbing until retirement. Darrell enjoyed being a part of the Ellis community. He played basketball for the Ellis city recreational team for many years, and was a strong advocate for youth sports. Darrell was fond of music and had a wonderful singing voice. He liked to tinker with antique cameras, take photographs, and videotape family events. He always made time for family and friends, and regularly offered a helping hand to those in need. Darrell’s children, and especially his grandchildren, were the light of his life.

Darrell is lovingly remembered and survived by his children, daughter Jenna Sander and husband Darrell, and grandchildren Cooper, Ezra, and Russell, of Gilbert, Arizona; daughter Maren Smith of San Antonio, Texas; son-in-law Don Gilbert and grandchildren Rachel and Hailey of Garnett, Kansas; son Andrew Smith and wife Erin, and grandchildren Paige, Eli, Aiden, and Christopher, of Ottawa, Kansas; son Lee Smith of Dodge City, Kansas; brothers David Smith and Ken Smith; sister Debra Vigil; and his former wife and friend Linda (Vanaken) Smith and her partner Brett Weaver.

Darrell was preceded in death by his daughter Adell K. Gilbert, his oldest brother George Smith, his oldest sister Sondra Donnel, and his parents Norman and Teddy Smith.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday August 19th at 10:30am at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory at 2509 Vine Street, Hays, KS 67601. Inurnment will be in Ft. Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ellis Recreation Commission, care of Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel.

Eliza Rose Fink

Eliza Rose Fink was born, and passed away peacefully with her mother, on August 12, 2017 at 2:02am.

Eliza was the daughter of Arkala Monique Cullens. She is survived by her mother and two siblings, brother Trey Fink and sister Skylar Cullens all of the home in Wilson; grandparents Malia Rich of Wilson, and Michael Fink of Moscow; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her step-grandfather John D. Rich.

A private family service will be held in the Wilson City Cemetery.
