John C. Younger

VICTORIA—John C. Younger, age 84, died Sunday, July 16, 2017, at his home in Victoria. He was born Jan. 18, 1933, in Hays, Kansas, to Jacob P. and Catherine (Mader) Younger.  He married Ethel M. (Stegman) on May 1, 1965, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pfeifer, Kansas.

 John attended grade school at Catharine, Kansas, and was a 1951 high school graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy. He then attended one year of junior college at St. Joseph’s Military Academy and went on to continue his education at Fort Hays State University, graduating in 1958 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. He was a life-time Ellis County resident with the exception of the two years he served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955.

 John was the owner of Younger Gambles Store and Younger Appliance for 50 years and was known as “Victoria’s Maytag Man.” He and his wife also own J & E Storage of Victoria. John served as past president, of the St. Fidelis Parish Council, U.S.D. 432 School Board and the former Victoria Lions Club. He was an affiliate to the Capuchin Province of Mid-America, a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis Church in Victoria, the Victoria Knights of Columbus, the Half Century Club at Fort Hays State University and the Hays American Legion.

 Survivors include his wife, Ethel, of 52 years, of the home; one son, Michael Younger and wife, Sarah, rural Pfeifer; three daughters, JoAnn Seaman and husband, Tim, Arvada, Colorado; Maria Munro and husband, Jeff, Leawood, Kansas; Annette Zeigler and husband, Tracy, Natoma, Kansas;  eight grandchildren, Molly and Hannah Seaman, Sophia and Jack Munro, Taitem and Alyvia Zeigler, Myah and Grace Younger; one sister, Nadine Pederson, Rogers, Minnesota; four sisters-in-law, Jeanette Younger and Det Younger, both of Victoria; Laverna Younger, Hays; and Mary Ann Adams,  Salina, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Richard, Albert, Jack, Bernie, Francis and  Tom; one infant brother; and five sisters, Lucille Miller, Rita Desch, Lietta Niernberger, Catherine Bitterman and Sister Patricia Younger.

Services are at 10 a.m. Friday, July 21, 2017, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria. Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post No. 1751 and Fort Riley Kansas.

A vigil service is at 7 p.m. Thursday, followed by a Victoria Knights of Columbus and Victoria Daughters of Isabella Rosary both at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria.

Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday, all at The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria.

 Memorials are suggested to the Capuchin Province of Mid-America or the Basilica of St. Fidelis.

Franklin LeRoy Muck

Franklin LeRoy “Frank” Muck, age 82, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, KS. He was born March 9, 1935 in Downs, KS to Nathan A. and Meriem W. (Hershey) Muck. He owned Muck Construction.

On December 27, 1953 he married Elsie A. Watkins. To this marriage were born four children, Carol, Kathy, Terry, and Lori.

Frank was a member of the Masons and the American Quarter Horse Association. He raised horses for many years. Frank drove, built, and restored horse buggies and wagons. He used his horses and wagons to do many weddings and even a funeral.

Before owning his own business, Muck Construction, Frank worked many years for Wentz Construction building dams and roads. He owned Muck Construction since the 70s and built houses, put basements under existing houses, and did remodeling and roofing. He started out building pole buildings.

After retiring Frank and two of his friends, Francis and Harlan, whom we fondly refer to as the “old geezer crew” did several small jobs in the area. He also kept busy with his wagon restoring even restoring wagons for the Fort Bissell Museum in Phillipsburg.

Frank loved being with his family and especially enjoyed spending time with all of his grandchildren. Every family get-together you could find him playing pitch with several family members. He also played several mornings during the week after retiring.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Carol Muhsmann, a brother Bill Muck, sisters Adelia Muck, Helen Chase and Korliss Zimmerman and grandson Eric Muck.

Frances Nadine Maier

Frances Nadine Maier, 86, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington, Kansas.

A celebration of Frances’ life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, July 20, 2017, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Jim Strausser officiating. Burial will follow the service at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell.

Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at the mortuary with family to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Wednesday evening. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Harold Everett Hall

Harold Everett Hall, 97, Manhattan, formerly of Hays, died Friday, July 14, 2017 at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community, Wroten House, in Manhattan.

He was born December 13, 1919 in Hays, Kansas the son of Frank John and Elsie Elizabeth (Giinther) Hall, who were pioneer families in Ellis County.  He is the third generation of Halls in the area.  He attended Saline Valley School and graduated from Hays High School in 1939.  He attended Fort Hays State College for one year then moved to Wichita where he was employed at Boeing Aircraft.

He met his future wife, Helen, in Wichita on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 1941.  They were united in marriage on May 17, 1942 in Argonia, Kansas.  He entered the Army Air Force and served from September of 1942 until February of 1946.  Helen followed him while he served in Kearns, Utah, Rapid City, South Dakota, and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Following his military service, the couple settled on the family ranch in Ellis County.  In 1972, they moved to Hays, after which time Harold became co-owner of Pioneer Farm and Ranch Supply, Inc. in Abilene, Kansas.  Harold moved to Manhattan, Kansas in 2012 to live near his son.

He enjoyed many years of hunting, fishing, and traveling throughout the United States.  He participated in a mobile barbecue business called Fire, Smoke, and Flavor with several friends after his retirement.  In later years he enjoyed long rides through the countryside, both around Hays and through the Flint Hills.

Harold’s accomplishments include being on the Natoma COOP Board, member of Kansas Farm Bureau, Township Director of the Saline Valley Township, member of the Saline Valley School Board, member of the American Legion, Eastern Star, and a seventy five year member of the Hays Masonic Lodge.  He is also a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Hays, Kansas.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife Helen (Garber) in 1999, his sister Dorothy Shumaker, and his parents.  Survivors include his brother; Warren Hall of Hays, his son; Steven Wayne Hall and wife Linda of Manhattan, his daughter; Donna Marie Frenzl and husband Ron of Olathe, three grandchildren; Aimee Corrigan, Kara Harris, and Paul Houser, three great grandchildren; Lorelai, Zoe, and Annalee.   He is also survived by three step-grandchildren, twelve step-great-grandchildren and special friends Martha Leonhardt and Vaughn McMurtrie.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2703 Fort Street.  Burial will follow in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery.   Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Monday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, and from 1:00 pm until service time on Tuesday at the church.  Memorials are suggested in Harold’s memory to Esther’s Place in Hays, Kansas or to Meadowlark Hills Good Samaritan Fund in Manhattan, all in care of the funeral home.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com

Alice Marie Weber

Alice Marie Weber, age 88, of Ellis, Kansas passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society, Hays, Kansas. She was born September 7, 1928 in Ellis to Celestine and Nettie (Riedel) Dreiling. She married Ralph Weber on July 21, 1947 in Ellis. He preceded her in death July 24, 1991.

She was a homemaker and long-time cook for St. Mary’s School in Ellis. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella both of Ellis. She was a very active member of the church and enjoyed singing and polka music.

Alice is survived by two sons, Ronald (Merrie) Weber of El Paso, Texas and Roger (Dawn) Weber of Disputanta, Virginia; three daughters, Susan (Tom) Veeh of Kansas City, Kansas, Lois Dreher of Hays and Paula (William) Monroe of Warren, Oregon; three brothers, Robert Dreiling of Hays, Clarence Dreiling of Holdrege, Nebraska and Jerry Dreiling of St. John, Kansas; a sister, Freda Eberle of Ft. Collins, Colorado; 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a great granddaughter, Chloe Medina and a son-in-law, Bob Dreher.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday 6 PM – 8 PM with a combined D of I rosary and parish vigil service at 7 PM all at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th Ellis, KS 67637.

Thelma Yehle Jennings

Lifelong Wallace County resident Thelma Yehle Jennings departed this life on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, KS.  She was 93 years old.

Thelma was born February 23, 1924 to William and Nina Trusler Yehle, south of the Fort Wallace Cemetery on what was the old Fort Wallace Military Reservation.  She was the next to the youngest of six children.

Thelma attended all twelve years of school in Wallace and graduated in 1942.  On May 24, 1942, she was united in marriage to Wayne E. Jennings in a civil ceremony at the Wallace County Courthouse.  Wayne and Thelma lived with his parents Earl and Mabel Jennings on their farm until Wayne was drafted into the Army in July of 1942.  Thelma continued to stay with Wayne’s parents while he was away serving his country.

Wayne finished his tour of duty in 1946.  Wayne and Thelma then moved to their farm on Rose Creek and started their family.  Together they raised four girls; Judy, Jolene, Janice and Wanda on the farm.  Thelma was actively involved with the farming and ranching all of their married life.

Thelma enjoyed raising chickens and a garden.  One of her goals was to have fresh fried chicken and fresh tomatoes by the fourth of July.

After her girls were older, Thelma helped with the lunch programs at the Sharon Springs and Wallace Schools.  Thelma also cooked for Rotary, and at Prairie Village in Sharon Springs.

Thelma was involved with the Senior Center in Sharon Springs.  She was elected president of the Senior Center and was president for several years.  She helped plan programs for the Center and helped organize the monthly potluck meal served at the Center.

Thelma became the curator of the Fort Wallace Museum in 1988, and held that position until 2012.  Thelma was exceptional as a curator of the museum.  She liked to meet new people and because she was born and raised in the community, she retained a wealth of information about the people, places and happenings of Wallace County.  She retired as curator of the Fort Wallace Museum at the age of 88.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Wayne, her mother and father-in-law, son-in-law Donnie Teichmer, three brothers, two sisters, one half brother and two grandchildren, Barry Stockamp and Jill Berry.

She is survived by her four daughters; Judy Berry of Sharon Springs, Jolene and Duane Letellier of Tupelo, Oklahoma, Janice and Henry Dinkel of Sharon Springs and Wanda and John Fixsen of Sharon Springs.  She is also survived by seven grandchildren; Cory Jennings, Ward Stockamp, Thayne and Tristan Teichmer, Sara Ziegler, Lindsay Hartman and Ellen Fixsen; seventeen great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.  Thelma will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Memorial services for Thelma will be announced at a later date.

Carol Mae Auten

Carol Mae Auten, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.

She was born on August 15, 1928 in Shields, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence T. “Pete” and Mary Sharp Hutchins.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, PEO and Alpha Omega Sorority all of Scott City, Kansas.

On September 14, 1947 she married Kay D. Auten in Scott City, Kansas. He passed away on July 11, 1998 in Scott City, Kansas.

Irene Rose (Pelzel) Bollig

Irene Rose (Pelzel) Bollig, 100, of Hays, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, after having lived a long and wonderful life.

She was born on October 29, 1916 in Catharine, Kansas the daughter and one of eleven children of Leo and Sophie (Staab) Pelzel. She attended school in both Hyacinth and Catharine through the 8th grade, and was an accomplished life-long student in her roles as a loving wife and mother, homemaker, friend and caregiver to her family and anyone in need of comfort. Her children share fond memories not only of her wonderful meals and desserts, but also her championship games in Pinochle, Sequence, and Scrabble, as well as a cherished collection of many quilts, lace, crafts and needlework lovingly made by hand. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and was a 64 year member of the Daughters of Isabella.

Irene found her dance partner at the Gala Gardens, and was united in marriage to William A. “Bill” Bollig on September 9th, 1940 in Catharine. They celebrated 67 years of marriage before Bill’s passing in 2008.
At age 19, she ventured from the family farm to Hays and was employed at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Motz- the editor of the Hays Daily News, where she did housekeeping and some cooking in return for room and board. Irene worked as a Nurse’s Aide at St. Anthony’s Hospital for 25 years. After retiring, she regularly visited patients to read to them and delivered mail, and made crafts and sold items in the hospital gift shop.

She is survived by her brothers Bill and James Pelzel, a sister Marie Mermis, her children Dennis (Mary) Bollig of Delta, Co, Bill (Judy) Bollig of Poplar Bluff, MO, Sue Bollig of Sacramento, CA, and Arlin (Jodi) Bollig of Tempe, AZ as well as seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William A. Bollig, her sisters Beatrice, Alice, Clara, Edna and Frances, and her brothers Leo and Alphonse.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street. Private family inurnment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until service time and a Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 10:30 am, all on Tuesday at the church.

Robert ‘Bob’ Bieker

Robert “Bob” Bieker, 74, DeLand, Fla., passed away July 10, 2017 after a long and courageous battle with metastasized prostate cancer.

He was born May 26, 1943 at Hays, KS to Carl and Rita Bieker. A graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy, now Thomas More Prep Marian High School in Hays, the military discipline followed him throughout his life but with a large dose of humor and good mischief. He never met a stranger.

Bob married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Haas, Ellis, KS in 1963. One son, Kevin, was born to them. His wife and son were his greatest pride. Bob was employed by Dillon Stores, Wichita, KS for 25 years. Recognized for his management skills, he opened multiple new stores for the company and advanced the careers of many employees. An entrepreneur, he began several start-up companies.

His final career choice was automobile sales. Honesty and customer satisfaction were his reputation. Bob was an extremely generous individual and particularly loved gifting family and friends with vacations at his favorite timeshares. Seeking a warmer climate, he and Marilyn moved from Minneapolis, MN in 2002 and found paradise in DeLand.

Survivors include his wife; son Kevin (Dawn Pitmon), Woodbury, MN; four brothers (Charles, Salina, KS; Gene, Granbury, TX; Jim, Trinity, TX; Gerard, Wichita, KS); three sisters (Marlene Irwin, Hays, KS; Margaret Picking, Hot Springs Village, AK; Marla Diers, Trinity, TX). He was predeceased by his parents and one sister, Mary Ann Wasko. Funeral services will be held August 16, 2017 at 10 AM, St. Peters Catholic Church, DeLand. Family services will follow August 19 in Hays, KS.

Ronald D. Deutscher

Ronald D. Deutscher, 82, WaKeeney, died Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital.  He was born April 1, 1935 in Hays to Reinhold and Clara (Hamburg) Deutscher. 

He attended Union Grade School in Trego County and graduated from Ellis High School.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960.  His tour of duty was spent in Germany.  He drove a school bus for the Ogallah School District while also farming.  He was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church where he served multiple terms as a church council member.

He married Karen Hillman on July 22, 1967.  Ron served on the Trego County Coop Board and the Trego County Fair Board.  He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Ellis Bowling League.  He was an avid supporter of the 4-H program and you could find him most times in the hog barn lending a hand wherever needed.

He is survived by his wife, Karen of the home; three children, Sonya Kostner of WaKeeney, Darrin (Deanna) Deutscher, Andover, and Shelly (Michael) Essary of Basehor, KS; seven grandchildren, Cassandra (Jason) Wilson, Derek (Haleigh) Kostner, Britney, Zoe and Adam Deutscher, and Anderson and Archer Essary; two great-grandchildren, Brynn Rains and Ryan Deutscher.  He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother Robert.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Christ Lutheran Church, Ellis.  Burial will be in Ogallah Cemetery. 

Visitation will be Friday, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney.

Harold Witthuhn

Harold Witthuhn, 92, of Bazine, Kansas, passed away July 10, 2017 at Cedar Village, Ness City. Harold was the fifth child of Louis and Anna (Mauth) Witthuhn. He was born on the family farm located 3 miles West of Bazine on the north side of Highway 96.

He attended Walnut Hill school about a mile North of the farmstead, mostly walking with sibling “up hill both ways,” he would say. He graduated from Bazine High School in 1942.

Harold met his future wife Harriett VanDeGrift in 1946 and they were married in Ness City on June 10, 1947. Their union resulted in the birth of four children: sons, Eldon, Harold Jr., and Kevin and daughter Verta. Harriett passed on November 15, 2000 and Verta on May 26, 1998.

Harold was owner of Witthuhn Livestock Trucking for over 50 years and kept his hand in farming wheat throughout his life. Harold and Harriett enjoyed traveling and dancing after retirement and he always had a project going in the garage. He was deeply involved in his church and always had time for his family and friends.

Harrold is survived by his sons, Eldon Witthuhn and his wife Teresa of Hays, Hal Witthuhn and his wife Sherry of Ellis, and Kevin Witthuhn and his wife Debbie of Bazine; 7 grandchildren, Amy Cook (Miles), WaKeeney, Sarah McCarty (Chad), Hays, Ryan Shrader (Kandra), Denver, Kelly Witthuhn, Denver, Jonathan Witthuhn, Hays, Trent Witthuhn (Kendra), Bazine, and Wende Witthuhn, Salina; and 6 great-grandchildren, Hayden and Carson Cook, WaKeeney, Katie and Ethan McCarty, Hays, and Chloe and Abbott Shrader, Denver.

Mary Catherine ‘Cathy’ Gilbert

Mary Catherine “Cathy” Gilbert, 72, of Salina, passed away Monday, July 10, 2017 at her home surrounded by family.

Cathy was born Aug. 11, 1944 in Norton, to Albert and Dolores (Dawson) Groff. She was united in marriage to Forest J. Gilbert July 23, 1965, in Miami, Okla.

She is survived by: children, Debra Putman (Tim), and Forest II Gilbert (Melody); six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Alberta, Regina and Becky; and brothers, Jamie, Robert, Gary, and Ronnie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her husband Jan. 2017; her brother, Vic; and her parents.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 14, with visitation one hour prior to services at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, with burial in All Saints Cemetery.

Memorials to: Al’s Café in Lost Springs, Kan., where Cathy loved to eat.
