Stanley Allen Buchholz, age 79, of Hill City, passed away Monday, June 12, 2017, at Trego Manor Long Term Care. Stanley was born September 9, 1937, in WaKeeney to Herman and Josephine (Mlinek) Buchholz.
He graduated from Trego High School in 1955.
Stanley married Sally Jo Underhill on July 26, 1969, in WaKeeney. To this union, they were blessed with three beautiful children, Christopher Justin of Wichita, Kimberly Michelle of Lawrence and Chandra Richelle of Rawlins, Wyoming.
Stanley grew up farming in Trego County and was involved in FFA. He owned and operated Stan’s Custom Harvesting, Stan’s Tree Service of Hill City and Stan’s Disposal.
Stanley was blessed and extremely excited over the arrival of his first-born great grandson in September 2016
Stanley was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Allen Buchholz and Troy Allen Buchholz.
Memorial graveside service will be held at 9:00 a.m., Monday, July 17, 2017, at WaKeeney City Cemetery, WaKeeney. Inurnment will follow.

Gaylord resident Hazel B. Brown, age 97, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017 in the Smith County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, Smith Center.
She was born September 9, 1919 in Beaver County, OK the daughter of Charlie & Bertha (Purdy) Atherton.
Hazel was united in marriage to Clarence O. Brown on November 16, 1939 in Smith Center, KS. He preceded her in death on February 21, 1988.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Georgia Bottorf & husband, Ron of Springfield, MO and Lawana Shellito & husband, Paul of Gaylord, KS; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 3 step-great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and her sister, Frieda Fix of El Cajon, CA.
Cremation was planned. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 2017 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Randy Hill officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Diana Elizabeth Sanders, 73, died unexpectedly July 8, 2017, at her rural Great Bend residence. She was born Aug. 29, 1943, at Great Bend, the daughter of George Joseph and Luella Pauline (Burhenn) Schwager. She married Robert LeRoy Sanders July 7, 1962, at Great Bend. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mrs. Sanders was a homemaker, property manager and sales professional. She currently was employed by Great Bend Appliance and Furniture.
Mrs. Sanders was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, and Social Circle Club. She was a former Cub Scout, Girl Scout, and Campfire Girls Troop leader. She was a PBB, who gathered monthly. Her proudest accomplishments were centered around her family, both immediate and extended, always being there to offer her support in whatever endeavor they would try. She also loved hosting family and friends at home and was an exceptional cook and an avid reader, always trying new recipes or making up her own.
Survivors include her husband, Robert LeRoy Sanders, of the home; three sons, Robert E. Sanders and his wife Cindy of Enid, Okla., Kenneth G. Sanders and his wife Misty of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Matthew J. Sanders and his wife Stacy of Great Bend; one daughter: Gwendolyn S. Maris and her husband Brett of Trenton, Neb.; four brothers, Raymond Schwager and his wife Donita of Hays, Roger Schwager of Great Bend, Ricky Schwager of Great Bend, and Ronald Schwager and his wife Michelle of Hoisington; two sisters, Jeanette Soper of Great Bend, and Shirley Headley of Albert; 12 grandchildren, Rebecca Smith, Christina Deason, Julian Shuey, Jordin Scott, Lexi Maris, Dalton Shuey, Christian Zamora, Sebastian Zamora, Ivan Zamora, Cole Sanders, Paige Sanders and Dayna Sanders; 10 great-grandchildren, Leslie Sanders, Jadyn Smith, Aidyn Sanders, Shelbie Deason, Aaron Deason, Breckyn Scott, Greyson Scott, Averi Robinson, Viktoria Shuey and Leviathan Shuey; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert George Schwager; one great-grandson, Nicholas Smith; one nephew, Jerry Emerson; one niece, Lisa Woods, and one sister-in-law, Margaret Smith.

Helen E. Allen, 97, Hays, formerly of Ellis, died Monday, July 10, 2017 at Brookdale Senior Living Community.
She was born April 29, 1920 in Hawkeye, Iowa the daughter of Rev. Claus and Elizabeth (Bunge) Meyn. She graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois with an M.E. Degree, and while there she sang in the college chorus all four years. She was also a soloist in the Rock Island Lutheran Church Choir. The choir sang in Carnegie Hall, New York City; Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Illinois; and other concert halls in the east. The Augustana Choir also recorded on RCA Records.
After graduation, she taught music in Illinois for three years. She and her husband, Tad Allen, were united in marriage in 1945. After his untimely death in 1950, Helen moved to Ellis, Kansas with her two young sons, where she began teaching in the elementary school. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at Fort Hays State University and later her Master’s Degree.
Helen retired from teaching in May of 1985 and then joined the Retired Teachers Association in Hays and was the song leader for the group. She also gave private piano lessons in her home, continuing until she was eighty years old. She was the choir director at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis for 25 years. Throughout the years, she sang at funerals as well as solos for church services. She also sang in the Hays and Ellis Community Choirs. She was an honorary member of the Ellis Rotary Club as pianist as well as a part-time pianist at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellis. Occasionally she played piano and organ duets and sang in the choir at Christ Lutheran Church. Memberships included the Young Matrons Club, Delta Kappa Gamma of Hays, 50 years of membership in P.E.O. of Ellis, lifetime member of the Fort Hays Alumni Association, and Christ Lutheran Church of Ellis. She enjoyed classical music, travelling, gardening, and playing cards.
Survivors include her son; Jim Allen and daughter-in-law, Monica, of Indianapolis, Indiana, her sister; Sylvia Coles and brother-in-law, Robert, of Buffalo, New York, and three nephews; Dr. Steve Meyn and wife Heidi of Toronto, Canada, Darcy Coles of San Francisco, California, and Richard Meyn of Springfield, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tad Allen, a son; Warren Allen, brother and sister-in-law; Drs. Werner and Faye Meyn, a nephew; David Meyn, and a niece; Susan Meyn.

Alfred Clifford Matthaei, age 82, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at his home in Greeley County, Kansas. He was born on January 1, 1935 in Canistota, South Dakota, the son of Clifford A. And Charlotte Negherbon Matthaei. A resident of Greeley County, Kansas since 2005 moving from Red Bluff, California, he was retired from the Department of Interior as a Reclamation Officer.
Alfred was a member of the Community Of Christ Church and VFW both of Red Bluff, California and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict and serving as a Staff Sargent for the United State Air Force.
On July 8, 1957 he married Sandra Kramer in Rockville, Maryland. She passed away on October 25, 1998 in Redding, California.
Survivors include his One Son – Clifford Matthaei of Tribune, Kansas, Three Daughters – Debra Hoffman of Tribune, Kansas, Bonnie Salminen of Red Bluff, California, Brenda Boyd of Red Bluff, California, One Brother – Robert Matthaei of Salem, South Dakota, Two Sisters – Martha Koepsell of Salem, South Dakota, Mary Brude of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Six Grandchildren and Eleven Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his Parents and Wife – Sandra Matthaei.
Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Armour, South Dakota.

Jacob Lee Appel, age 32, passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.
He was born on November 14, 1984 in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Robert Baxter and Pamela Marie Gimler Appel. After graduating from Scott Community High School, Jacob received his Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas in 2008 and moved to McPherson, Kansas until August of 2016 when he moved back to Scott City, Kansas.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, Kansas.
Survivors include his Mother – Pam Appel of Scott City, Kansas, One Sister – Miranda & John Lara of Scott City, Kansas, One Brother – Joel Appel of Scott City, Kansas, One Niece – Maci Lara of Scott City, Kansas, Grandparents – Leon & HildIe Gimler of Parsons, Kansas, Numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.
He was preceded in death by his Father – Robert Baxter Appel, One Uncle – Tony Akers and One Second Counsin – Ethan Rodenberg.

Former Phillips County resident Lyle J. Stutterheim passed away June 24, 2017 in North Platte, NE at the age of 80. He was born June 19, 1937 in Phillips County, the son of Nick & Nina (Capstick) Stutterheim.
Survivors include his sons, Roy, Steve & Nick all of Prairie View; his daughters, Linda Naegele of Lucas & Karen Reese of Logan; 2 sisters, Eileen Schemper of Prairie View and Doris Mulder of Logan; 9 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren.
Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Sat. July 15 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Aaron Rust officiating. A private family inurnment with be held in the Prairie View Cemetery.
