Justin Dale Leighty

Justin Dale Leighty, 41, passed away on June 27, 2017 near Beeler, Kansas. He was born on June 19, 1976 in Colby, Kansas the son of Dale and Verna (Carlile) Leighty.

He was a editor for a RV and Campground industry publication. He married Crystal Swaim on Saturday, June 13th, 1998, in Winona Lake, Indiana.

He is survived by his wife, Crystal; three daughters, Sydney, Macy, and Chloe Leighty all of Warsaw, Indiana; parents, Dale and Verna Leighty of Las Animas, Colorado; and two brothers, Quentin and his wife, Angela Leighty of Monument, Colorado and Brian and his wife, Brooke Leighty of Dighton, Kansas.

Graveside inurnment will be on Saturday, July 1, 2017, 10:00 a.m., at the Buda Cemetery, Beeler, Kansas.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Harold Thomas Rhode Jr.

Harold Thomas Rhode Jr., 86, Goodland resident, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Center in Goodland.

Harold was born September 2, 1930 to Harold Thomas Rhode, Sr. and Dola (Johnson) in Tabor, Iowa. Harold graduated high school in Tabor, IA and graduated college at Graceland College in Lamoni, IA and Iowa State University in Ames, IA, he was an outstanding athlete in both high school and college. He held 3 master degrees in education. He was a teacher and a track coach at Billings Montana when he retired, after retirement he returned to coaching track at Absarokee, MT. He and Renee moved to Goodland in 2004.

Harold was a member of the Goodland Bible Church of Goodland, his favorite activities were teaching, coaching track, playing pinochle, gospel music, loved seeing and playing with all of his grandchildren, co-writing poems with his oldest granddaughter and teaching each grandchild how to fly fish at the cabin in Montana.

Harold is survived by his wife Renee of Goodland; and his children Debbie Alfred; Kevin Rhode; Larry Dreiling; Chris Dreiling; Kevin Dreiling; Darren Dreiling; 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his parents, his sister Marilyn, and two young children Lorie and Brett.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 2, 2017 at 2 p.m. MT at the Goodland Bible Church, 109 Willow Road, Goodland, KS.

Myrna Kay Topliff

Myrna Kay Topliff, 82, lifetime Sherman County resident passed away at the Goodland Regional Medical Center on Monday, June 26, 2017.

Myrna was born November 16, 1934 to August and Eva Reents in Goodland, Kansas. Myrna grew up and attended school at the Kanorado School, she later attended Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas. She married Dean Topliff at the Kanorado Methodist Church on June 1, 1952.

She is survived by her children, Dr. Donald Ray (Linda) Topliff of San Angelo, Texas; John Gale (Carol) Topliff of Goodland, Kansas; Julie Ann Huddleston of Windsor, Colorado; Randy Dean (Jeannie) Topliff of Goodland, Kansas; and Tim Jess (Jennifer) of Phoenix, Arizona; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and her dear friend Marsha Smith.

Myrna is preceded in death by her parents; husband Dean; son Tom; Grandson Clayton; sister Arnetta Lengel; brothers Raymond and Bill Reents.

Funeral service will be Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. MT at the United Methodist Church, 1116 Sherman in Goodland, interment following funeral service at the Goodland Cemetery

Marjorie Emma Parsons

Marjorie Emma Parsons, age 95, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2017, at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas.

Marjorie was born November 4, 1921, in Caldwell, Idaho, the daughter of Frank Gustav & Affa Emma (Root) Carlson. She earned her Bachelor of Science teaching degree from McPherson College. A resident of Leoti, Kansas since 2011, moving from Centralia, Washington, she was a homemaker and a Missionary for the Free United Methodist Church, where she and her husband traveled all over the world including New York City, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Kentucky, Indiana, Kansas, Oregon, and Washington.

Marjorie was a member of Women’s Missionary International.

On August 29, 1942, she married Elmer Earl Parsons at Caldwell, Idaho. Elmer passed away on March 23, 2007, in Centralia, Washington.

J.D. Fawver

Phillipsburg resident J.D. Fawver passed away June 21, 2017 at the University of KS Medical Center in Kansas City, KS at the age of 66.

He was born May 9, 1951 in San Diego, CA to Donald & Bonnie (Kincaid) Fawver. J.D. was a Maintenance Supervisor for the KS Dept. of Transportation.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah, of Phillipsburg; son, Jason, of Hays, KS; daughters, Amanda Schulte of Olathe, KS and Sara Fawver of Denver, CO; two grandchildren; and his brother, Jim, of Puyalup, WA.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 30, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating.

Friends may sign the book on Thursday, June 29, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. The family will greet friends that evening from 7 – 8 p.m.

Sharon A. Smith

Sharon A. Smith, 71, passed away Monday June 26th, near Abilene.

She was born June 12, 1946 in La Crosse, Kansas, the daughter of Reinhold S. “Reiny” and Lorrine C. (Munsch) Herrman. Growing up in La Crosse, Sharon attended local schools. On June 8, 1968 she was married to Merlyn Andres Sr. Most all of their married life was spent in Hoisington. He preceded her in death March 3, 2015. Sharon had been employed by Essex in Hoisington until retiring in 1985. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, sewing and going to the casinos. Sharon was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church, the Red Hat Society and Rebecca’s.

She is survived by: two daughters, Janet (Gary) Davis of New Cambria and Janice (Shadd) Snyder of Enterprise; a son, Merlyn (Lynn) Andres Jr. of Solomon; eight grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and a sister, Donna (Terry) Burke of Hays.

Kenneth Joseph ‘Kenney’ Bieker

Kenneth Joseph “Kenney” Bieker, age 83, of Schoenchen, Kansas passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 in Schoenchen.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Friday, June 30, 2017 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Schoenchen. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors courtesy of the Hays VFW Honor Guard.

Visitation will be Thursday 4 PM – 8 PM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601 and on Friday 9 AM until service time at the church.

A Schoenchen council 3rd degree Knights of Columbus rosary will be Thursday at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil service at 7 PM all at the funeral chapel.

Winston Lee Campbell

Winston Lee Campbell, 85, Hays, died Sunday, June 25, 2017 at HaysMed.

He was born August 22, 1931 in Tulsa, Oklahoma the son of Ralph W. and Harriet A. (Woodworth) Campbell.  On May 23, 1969 he was united in marriage to Juanita Apodaca in Carson City, Nevada.  He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  He was a motel manager, a city commissioner, and was on the board of directors for the Special Olympics while living for many years in Alturas, California.  He enjoyed playing fantasy football, was a huge Denver Broncos and Kansas City Royals fan, and he loved to play golf, often playing twice a day.  He loved his dog, Jolene, and his granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife, of the home, a son; Christopher Casey Campbell of Los Angeles, CA, three daughters; Jenny Lee Linenberger and husband Stan of Hays, Deborah Marie Coney and friend John Dooley of Colorado Springs, CO, and Diana Arline Campbell of San Jose, CA,  a brother; Ronnie Campbell and wife Pat of Cherokee Village, AR, and a sister; Arline Brown and husband Bill of Cherokee Village, AR, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons; Joseph Winston Campbell and Bryon Scott Campbell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Friday, June 30, 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street.  Cremation will follow the services and inurnment will take place at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday and from 10:00 am until 10:45 on Friday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine St.  A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to Winston’s family, in care of the funeral home.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com.

Agnes Marie Karlin

Agnes Marie Karlin, 94, Hill City, formerly of Hays and Oakley, died Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the Dawson Place in Hill City.

She was born February 1, 1923 on the family farm north of Ellis, KS the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Graf) Kohl.  She was a housewife and mother and prior to marriage she worked in a dentist office in Ellis and was a secretary at a car dealership in Kansas City.  On August 8, 1953 she was united in marriage to Eugene J. “Gene” Karlin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis.  He preceded her in death on August 12, 2000.  After marriage, she and Gene remodeled the farm at Winona, KS where they lived until 1962.  They then moved to the farm northwest of Oakley, KS where they remained until Gene passed away.  Agnes moved to Hays shortly after and remained until April of 2012 when she moved to the Dawson Place in Hill City.  She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays, and she enjoyed cooking, cleaning, praying, and helping with things at church.  She instilled her love of music in all of her children and she was so proud that they all earned college degrees and are successful.  She loved her grandchildren and family deeply.

Survivors include two sons; Mark Karlin and wife Rebecca of Aurora, CO, and Craig Karlin and wife Lisa of Hays, four daughters; Karen Keith and husband Joe of Penokee, Mira  Jo Hoke of Black Diamond, WA, Susan Lowman and husband Bill of Manhattan, and Colette Ford and husband David of Aledo, TX, a sister-in-law; Beatrice Kohl of Chula Vista, CA, seventeen grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gene, and seven brothers; Alec, Paul, Tony, Alfred, Ray, Walter, and Alvin Kohl, and three sisters; Tillie Herrman, Cecelia Jacques, and Elizabeth Hillman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 am on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine St.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday and from 8:30 am until 9:15 on Saturday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine St.  A parish vigil and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to Dawson Place or Graham County Hospice, in care of the funeral home.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com

Victor Neil Carlisle

Victor Neil Carlisle, 82, of Russell, Kansas, died on Monday, June 19, 2017, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Victor was born on January 28, 1935, in Madison, Kansas, the son of William Howard and Helen (Bumgardner) Carlisle. He moved to Russell in 1941, when he was 6 years old. He attended local schools and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1953. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Laura Nevell Gossett on March 19, 1954, in Russell. From this union Victor and Nevell were blessed with two children Vicki and Curt. At age 17 Vic went to work at his first job with Russell Supply. Later, the company was sold to Buckeye Supply and Vic worked for them as an oilfield supply store manager until his retirement at age 63. He was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell. He was a member of the Russell Masonic Lodge #177, Isis Shrine and Elks Lodge. He enjoyed golf, Kansas University Basketball, Kansas City Royals baseball, hunting, watching television. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and attending their activities.

Surviving family include his wife of 63 years Nevell of the home; daughter Vicki Desbien and husband Bill of Abilene, Kansas and son Curt Carlisle and wife Diane of Joplin, Missouri; brothers Richard Carlisle and wife Maria and Cecil Carlisle and wife Margarita and sister Sharon May and husband Phillip all of Wichita, Kansas and sisters Rita Brougdon and husband Don Johnson of Texas and Reba Ludwick and husband Mike of Sterling, Kansas; 5 grandchildren Britt, Haley, Chase, Blake and Meg and 3 great grandchildren Brayden, Addison and Jett.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Victor’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, July 01, 2017, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Ezekiel Koech officiating. Cremation has been selected by the family. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Friday, June 30, 2017, at the mortuary with family to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Friday evening. Memorials may be given to the Trinity United Methodist Church Maintenance Fund and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Mary Ann (Gottschalk) Noeth

Boardman, Ohio – Mary Ann (Gottschalk) Noeth, age 73, died Sunday, June 11, 2017, at Shepherd of the Valley.

She was born September 9, 1943 in Hays, Kansas to George and Martha (Breit) Gottschalk. She married George F. Noeth on October 1, 1962, in Hays, Kansas. He died in April 24, 2016.

Mary graduated from high school in 1961. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mary and George lived in many states due to his prosperous career with NCR, including Kansas, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Connecticut, California and South Carolina.

Survivors include two sons, George S. Noeth and wife, Pamela G., Columbus, OH; Steven E. Noeth and wife, Kerri, Chicago, IL; one daughter, Robin M. Marino and husband, Joseph, Youngtown, OH; five grandchildren, Joseph Marino, Ryan Marino, Tyler Noeth, Wesley Noeth, Emma Noeth; two brothers, Ken Gottschalk and wife, Diane, Hays, KS; Donald Gottschalk and wife, Midge, Hutchinson, KS; one sister-in-law, Mary Alice Gottschalk, McPherson, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, George Gottschalk Jr, Tom Gottschalk and Robert Gottschalk.

Graveside services and inurnment will be at 9:00 A.M. Monday, July 3, 2017, at St. Joseph Cemetery Hays, Kansas.

Helen Louis Thacker

Helen Louis Thacker, age 84, of Page City, died Sunday, June 25, 2017 at Scott County Hospital, Scott City. She was born February 9, 1933 in Oakley to C.R. “Blue” and Velma (Cook) Mastin. Helen married Gene Thacker on August 6, 1950 at Weskan.

Helen Lois Thacker was born February 9, 1933, in Oakley, Kansas, to Clarence R. “Blue” Mastin and Velma H. (Cook) Mastin. Helen attended all twelve years of school in Russell Springs, Kansas, graduating from Russell Springs High School in 1950.

On August 6, 1950, Helen and Keith Eugene Thacker (Gene or Bushel) were married by the Baptist minister in Weskan, Kansas. They lived in Leoti until April 1951 when they moved to Russell Springs to help Helen’s dad with the family farming. They had one daughter, Linda Lee, born September 25, 1951, and one son, Larry Dean, born January 17, 1953. Helen was generous, caring, and loved children. She was a devoted grandmother who enjoyed having her grandkids spend time with her as well as being a faithful supporter at their many activities. Helen was also a charter member of the Butterfield Historical Association.

Helen was preceded in death by her father Blue in 1995, her mother Velma in 2002, her husband Gene in 2002, and her son-in-law Jerry Ayers in 2003. Survivors include her daughter Linda Ayers of Page City; son Larry Thacker of Russell Springs; grandson Kevin and wife Jill Ayers along with their two daughters, Leah and Maura of Sharon Springs; granddaughter Tricia and husband Matt Jaeger along with their daughter Logan and sons Levi and Brett of Minneola; and grandson Brett and wife Paige Ayers of Russell Springs.

Preceded in death by her husband Gene, her parents, and son-in-law, Jerry Ayers.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Ayers of Page City, son Larry Thacker of Russell Springs, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at United Methodist Church, Winona, with burial in Russell Springs Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Casket will remain closed.
