C. Louise Elliott, 93, Hays, died Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at HaysMed.

Austin Dale Deaver

screen-shot-2017-05-23-at-3-13-42-pmAustin Dale Deaver, of Levant, Kansas was born April 8, 1925 to Lawrence and Anna (Blau) Deaver in Russell Springs, Kansas. Dale grew up in a family of four boys and six girls, attending school in Russell Springs. On August 18, 1943 he was drafted into the Army Air Corps and served until he was honorably discharged June 22, 1945. Dale was based in England and served as a B-17 nose gunner over Germany.

On October 3, 1946 he married Minnie Tubbs. They had one daughter Cathy.

Dale began custom harvesting in 1959, traveling from Oklahoma to South Dakota each summer and to Southwest Kansas in the fall. He was always ready to help out friends and neighbors get their crops in.

Dale and Minnie enjoyed spending the winter in their mortorhome traveling to Texas, Arizona and Florida. Minnie passed away in February 2005, after 59 years of marriage.

He was a member of the VFW and American Legion and spent countless hours helping with Sunday evening bingo and Wednesday night steak fries. He always loved sharing his memories of his time spent in the Army and was a true patriot. He will certainly be remembered for his love of his country and he enjoyed singing “God Bless America” with friends and family every chance he got. He was also very proud to have been the Grand Marshall for the Thomas County Free Fair Parade in 2011.

Dale loved his family and took great pride in his grandkids and great-grandkids. He truly never knew a stranger and was always willing and excited to welcome anyone and everyone into his family. Dale’s kindness and generosity will be remembered by his family as one of his greatest assets.

Dale is survived by daughter Cathy, Colby, Grandaughters, Coleena Woods and husband John, Manhattan, Karen Lindberg and husband Dr. Nels , Great Bend. Great grandchildren Declan Ryan, Ryker Woods, Caitlyn Woods, Nash Lindberg, MacKenzie Lindberg, Josh Ryan and Matt Ryan. Sisters Effie Clevenger, Wakeeney and Berniece Straub, Oakley. He was preceded in death by wife Minnie, son in-law Scott Wieland, brothers Virgil, Lawrence & Eugene. Sisters Martha, Elizabeth, Aileen, and Doris.

Ambrose Andrew Kisslinger

screen-shot-2017-05-23-at-10-23-13-amAmbrose Andrew Kisslinger, age 88, died Monday, May 22, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis, Kansas. He was born on March 1, 1929 on the family farm N.E. of Ransom, Kansas to Herman and Catherine Flax Kisslinger. He was the fifth-born of 11 children and the first-born son.

Ambrose attended the Cyrus Country School all 8 years of his education.

He worked at several jobs before he started farming on his own. He farmed successfully for many years in the Ransom area. He also raised registered Charolais cattle. He loved his farming and cattle, it was his life.

He married Rita Dinges in 1951. One child was born. Later in life he married Alverna Jacobs Kisner on October 25, 2004. They lived together in Ransom for 11 years, then moved to Hays in 2014.

He was a member of St Aloysius Catholic Church, Ransom until moving to Hays. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, the Ransom Go-Getters Senior Citizens, he served on the Ransom Co-op board and belonged to the Sunflower Polka Club.

He is survived by four sisters, Ann Pfannenstiel, Little River, Regina Schuster, WaKeeney, Rosetta Healy, Ness City, and Berniece Blakely, Hays; two brothers, John (Barbara) Kisslinger, Ransom and Joe Kisslinger, Spokane, WA; one child; a beloved granddaughter, Amanda (Chris) Schuckman, Manhattan and three other grandchildren; four stepchildren, Roger (Patti) Kisner, Victoria, Rex (Lena) Kisner, Hutchinson, MaryJane Spresser, Littleton, CO, David (Susan) Kisner, Hays; several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ambrose was preceded in death by his wife Alverna; brother, Paul Kisslinger; and three sisters, Betty Casey, Frances Casey, and Rosalie Smith.

Rosary and Parish Vigil will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at St. Aloysius Church, Ransom. Funeral will be on Thursday, May 25, 2017, 10:00 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, Ransom. Burial, in the St. Aloysius Cemetery, Ransom. Viewing at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and at the church from 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday until service time.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to St. Aloysius Church, Ransom Senior Center, Masses or Donor’s Choice.

Margaret L. (Stecklein) Billinger

screen-shot-2017-05-23-at-7-56-26-amMargaret L. (Stecklein) Billinger passed away on May 20, 2017. Margaret was born January 6, 1927 to Corneil and Ann (Pfannenstiel) Stecklein. She married Robert A. Billinger September 8, 1952 in Hays. Robert preceded her in death on April 15, 2008.

Margaret was a graduate of Girls Catholic High School in Hays, St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita, and Fort Hays State University. She was employed as a registered nurse and elementary school teacher before retiring. She enjoyed embroidery, reading and all the special events with the Stecklein and Billinger families. She was a member of the Hays VFW Auxiliary, the Daughters of Isabella, the Fort Hays State University Alumni Association and the Hays RN Club for 55 years.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Doug Roth of Wichita, a grandson, Steve Roth of Colorado, and a sister-in-law, Edna Stecklein of Hays.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, five brothers – Wendelin, Jake, Alois, Fidelis, Augie, and a sister Catherine Wasinger.

Funeral mass and services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 27th, at Brock’s Keithley Funeral Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, Kansas. Inurnment to follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hays.

Willma Joy Baker

She was born on May 2, 1928 in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of W.H. And Alice Flaiz Wells. A lifelong Scott City resident she was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church of Scott City.

On May 14, 1947 she married H. Douglas Baker in Scott City, Kansas. He preceded her in death on Sept 2, 1982.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, and husband, four brothers, Malvin Wells, Edd Wells, Howard Wells, Willard Wells, four sisters Maggie Mae Conine, Aleta Barrows, Marvel Wells, Juanita Wells, Son in Law, Raymond Bremenkamp and Great Grand Daughter Emily Bremenkamp.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, May 26, 2017 at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas with Rev. Robert Nuckolls presiding.

Memorials may be given to the Finney County 4-H Foundation or the Scott County 4-H Council in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Open calling will be from 5-8 on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 and Thursday, May 25 from 10-8 at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.

Duane Victor “Shorty” Normandin

screen-shot-2017-05-22-at-11-20-10-amDuane Victor “Shorty” Normandin passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 87. He was born on December 23, 1929 in Bogue, Kansas to the late Norman and Irene (Benoit) Normandin. He grew up in Damar and graduated from Damar High School with the Class of 1948. In December of that year he joined the United States Air Force, serving in Korea. On April 27, 1955 he was united in marriage to Lavonne Desair in Damar. They were blessed with four sons, Rodney, Larry, Mark, and Chris.

Shorty was a member of VFW Post # 8871 in Plainville, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid sports fan, especially Notre Dame. But his favorite sports to watch, and he never missed them, was when his sons and grandsons were wrestling, playing ball, or his granddaughters were playing softball. He even coached Plainville Recreation Baseball, and basketball at the Sacred Heart Grade School. Of course, several times a week, he could be found with the boys, in the shop or in the house, engaged in a serious round of 10 Point Pitch.

Duane is survived by his wife Lavonne Normandin of Plainville; sons Rodney Normandin and wife Gay of Plainville, Larry Normandin and wife Carla of Plainville, Mark Normandin and wife Trena of Salina, and Chris Normandin of Plainville; brothers Louis Normandin and wife Irene of Olathe, Eugene Normandin and wife Helen of Damar, Alfred Normandin of Poquoson, VA, Donald Normandin and wife Linda of Damar, and Richard Normandin and wife Mallone of Hays; sisters Jeannie Bellerive of Plainville, Odella Huhmann of Tecumseh, MO, and MaryAnn Meyer of Denver, CO; sister-in-law Joanna Normandin of Hays; grandchildren Amy Normandin, Nate Normandin, Logan Normandin, Ella Normandin, Lacy Desair, Whitney Desair, Mark Marvin, and Venessa Marvin; and great-grandchildren Savannah, Trinity, Kaylee, Jesse, Mariah, Jakob, Sadie, and Seth.

He was preceded in death by his parents Norman and Irene Normandin, brother Melvin Normandin, granddaughter Kelsey Normandin, and grandson Ryan Desair.

Shorty was a patriot at heart, and he leaves a legacy of love and devotion to his God, his country, and his family. He was a Catholic gentleman whose life was truly built on the Trinity of Virtues, Charity, Unity, and Brotherly Love. Rejoice as he hears the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant. It is now time to rest from your labors. Enter into the joy of the Lord.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00-4:00pm on Wednesday at the funeral home, and from 6:00-8:00pm at the church with a Prayer Vigil at 7:00pm.

Denny ‘Max’ Currey

screen-shot-2017-05-22-at-7-56-12-amDenny “Max” Currey, 78, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Sharilyn (Struckhoff) Currey; his son, Mike and his wife, Dr. Angie Currey and 3 grandsons, Josh, Brett and Mitch of Kearney, MO; brother, Joe Currey and wife Patty of Hays, KS, sister, Dr. Kathy Currey of Colorado Springs, CO; and his beloved special sister, Janet Hoverson of Kensington, KS.

Max was born and raised in Claudell, KS, the son of Lennie and Florence (Wilson) Currey. He was a long-term resident of Kensington, KS. In Max’s early years he worked for the state highway department and Mini Max. He spent his last years working from Tamko and retired in 2004. He met his wife, Sharilyn Struckhoff, at Waites Drug Store and they were married in 1964 at the United Church of Christ in Athol, KS. In 1958, Max joined the United States Navy where he served as an MM2 on the USS Shangri-La until 1964.

In Max’s early years he enjoyed stock car racing with friends. He enjoyed pheasant hunting and fishing with his friends, son and nephews. Once retired, Max was an avid gardener, took pride in his yard and enjoyed crafting with his wife Sharilyn and son, Mike. He took pride in being a father and grandfather to Mike and the boys. Max was well-loved by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Becky Saddler officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Athol, KS with military honors.

Mr. Currey will lie in-state on Sunday, May 21, from noon – 9 p.m. and again Monday, May 22, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Chapel in Phillipsburg.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Kensington Community Store or the Smith County Memorial Hospital Building Fund.

Richard Roemer, age 94, of Quinter (formerly of Gove) passed away, Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Gove County Medical Center, Long Term Care.

Bentley Jordan Scoby

He was born April 12, 2016 in Hays, Kansas the son of Luke and Erika (Karlin) Scoby and the brother of Layla Rae Scoby. Other family include grandparents; Shirley Scoby of Hays and Brenda and Doug Dreiling of Olathe, great grandparents; Cletus and Mildred Klaus of Hays and Marvin and Dorothy Dreiling of Hays, aunts and uncles; Travis and Jody Scoby of Hays, Courtney King of Hays, and Matthew and Rebecca Karlin of Great Bend, and numerous cousins, and great aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by grandfathers; Brian Scoby and Alan Karlin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at the St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 E. 13th, Hays. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Tuesday and from 9:00 am until service time on Wednesday, all at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church. A parish vigil will be at 7:00 pm followed by a Knights of Columbus Council #10044 rosary at 7:30, all on Tuesday at the church.

Denny ‘Max’ Currey

Kensington resident Denny “Max” Currey passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 78.

He was born in Norton, Kansas on March 6, 1939, the son of Lennie & Florence (Wilson) Currey. On Feb. 19, 1966, he married Sharilyn Struckhoff in Athol, KS. She survives of the home in Kensington, KS.

Also surviving are his son, Michael & wife, Angie, of Kearney, MO; brother, Joe Currey & wife, Patty, of Hays, KS, sister, Kathy Currey of Colorado Springs, CO; and 3 grandchildren.

Dale J. Brooks

screen-shot-2017-05-20-at-10-48-14-amHays, Kansas – Dale J. Brooks, age 66, died Thursday, May 18, 2017, at his home. He was born July 18, 1950, in Logan, Kansas to Cecil and Irene (Meadow) Brooks. He married Marilyn K. (Brown) on June 6, 1970, in Prairie View, Kansas.

He was a barber and stylist at Continental Barber & Style Shop in Hays for many years and prior
to that he was at the Esquire Style Shop. He grew up in Logan, Kansas and was a1968 graduate of Logan High School. After school he attended the Wichita Barber School and has been in Hays since 1970. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church Hays, Kansas. Dale loved to hunt, his bird dogs, playing golf and tennis, until his health failed him. He enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s ballgames and spending time with is family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Brooks, of the home; three sons, Travis Brooks and wife, Nina, Impendence, MO; Corey Brooks, Hays, KS; Lance Brooks and wife, Brandi, Hays, KS; one daughter, Vanessa Clark and husband, Kevin, Abilene, Ks, four grandchildren, Harley Brooks, Hunter and Noah Clark, Peyton Brooks, and one on the way, Kaci Lynn Brooks; three sisters, Hilda Withington and husband, Bob, Tonganoxie, KS; Dorothy Crawford, El Dorado, KS; Becky Ubben, Phillipsburg, KS; his mother-in-law, Darline Brown, Logan, KS. two brothers-in-law, Bill Brown and wife, Nancy, Manhattan, KS; Larry brown and wife, Verda, Prairie View, KS; one sister-in-law, Rhonda Jacques, Wamego, KS; several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Max Dale Clark; his father-in-law, Walter Brown; a niece, Teresa Withington; and a brother-in-law, Brad Ubben.

Services are at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church 7th and Ash Street Hays, Kansas. A private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601 and from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, at the First United Methodist Church Hays, Kansas.
