Roberta Marie Bombardier

roberta_bombardier-paper-pictureHays, Kansas – Roberta Marie Bombardier, age 70, died Thursday, April 27, 2017, at her home, with family around her.

She was born May 23, 1946, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Robert and Elsie (Hammond) Stackhouse. She married Danny Ray Mohne on July 3, 1965, and had a son, Ray, they later divorced. She then married Roger Bombardier July 7, 1971, and had a son, Robert. Roger died in August of 1997.

She graduated from McLain High School, Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1964. While in high school she was a member of the synchronized swim team and had the honor of being inducted into The International Order of The Rainbow for Girls. She became an Airman in the United States Air Force in 1964 at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX and was stationed active duty at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, NE. She lived in Oklahoma, until moving to Kansas to the farm in 1975. She was a cook at Victoria High School for about five years and worked at 5 Star Amaco in Hays, before moving to Tempe, AZ in 1987. She retired from Armstrong McCall as accountant in 2012. She was a very active member and Past President of the local chapter of Independent Order of Foresters. She participated in many activities including yearly Christmas pageant and plays.

Roberta dreamed big, was a people person, loved doing for others, loved her family, and each path of her life, was focused in the direction of sustaining those she loved.

She move back to Kansas in the spring of 2013. She volunteered at the Community Assistance Center, Sterling House/Brookdale, active at the Hays Senior Center and was a member of Celebration Community Church. She loved her church family and prayer group.

Survivors include two sons, Ray, and wife ,Deanna Hays ,KS; Robert Bombardier, Tempe ,AZ; three grandsons ,Bryant Bombardier and wife, Kylee, Hays, KS; Andrew and Jonathan Bombardier, both of Tempe, AZ; one great grandson, Aric Bombardier, Tempe, AZ.

She was receded in death by her parents; her husband, Roger; two brothers, Danny Stackhouse and Hank Stackhouse.
Services are 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the Celebration Community Church I-70 and exit 157 Hays, Kansas. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601 and from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, at Celebration Community Church Hays, Kansas.

Robert L. Clark

150x201-4979726Robert L. Clark, 84, of Oakley, died Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS. He was born July 1, 1932, the son of Vernon and Emma (Herdt) Clark, on a farm in Logan County, KS. He was baptized and confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Oakley.

Bob attended grade school in Logan and Gove Counties and graduated from Oakley High School in 1950. He attended St. John’s Lutheran Junior College, graduating in 1952. He joined the United States Army in January of 1953. Bob married Cherrie Thomas on May 22, 1953 and ten days later he shipped to Korea. They were reunited on November 22, 1954, at Camp Carson, CO. To this union was born Roberta, Kathleen (Cathi), David and Karen.

He was employed by Hubert Charolais Ranch, Monument Township and USD #274. The joy of his working life was driving the activity bus, joshing (and hollering at) all “his kids.” After his retirement he returned to drive again. He was still substitute driving route busses up to two weeks before his final illness.

Bob loved his Lord and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Oakley where he ushered, taught Sunday school, served as an elder and president of the congregation.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Cherrie, of the home; daughters, Roberta (Bob) Stocksdale, of Southington, CT, Cathi Clark, of Winfield, KS and Karen Hill (companion Paul Deepe), of Winfield, KS; son, David, of Monument, KS; sisters, Betty Pinkston, Greeley, CO and Elaine Tustin, Gove, KS; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 2-4:00 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Baalmann Mortuary Oakley. Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Monument Cemetery and a Memorial Service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Oakley. Lucile Esther McCall

mccall-picLifelong Resident of Sherman County, Kansas, Lucile Esther McCall, 97, passed away on April 25, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society-Sherman County in Goodland Kansas.

Lucile was born November 7, 1919 on the family farm 17 miles northeast of Goodland to Edwin A. and Lillie Anna (Melstrom ) Rhoads. She attended elementary school at Shermanville School and graduated High School in Goodland Kansas in 1937. Lucile then got her teaching certificate in Manhattan Kansas. She taught school for four terms, one at the Western Star School, and three at Fair View School.

August 15, 1940 Lucile married Harry Layton McCall at the Church in the Wildwood near Nashua Iowa. To this union two sons were born, Melvin Leroy McCall of Fort Collins CO and Dale Vernon McCall of Excelsior Springs MO.

After Lucile was married, she worked with Harry on the family farm and raising her two sons.

Lucile was a member of the Baptist Church in Goodland. She also was an avid writer enjoying telling the story of her life. Preceding Lucile in death were her husband Harry and parents, infant twin boys, Sisters Ethel Russell and Nora Mock, two half-sisters Adelaide Rockwell and Juanita Shahan and three brother-in-law’s, Roy Russell Jr., Darwyn “Buck” Venden and Dale Stephens.

She is survived by her two sons and two sisters, Iva Lee Shephens of Goodland Kansas and Doris Venden of Loveland CO., three grandchildren David (wife Alyssa) McCall, Ben (wife Stacie) McCall and Molly (husband Aaron) Barlow, Four Great Grandchildren, Brendan and Carter McCall, Nicholas McCall and Olivia Barlow. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services for Lucile will be held Saturday April 29, 2017 at 10:30 AM MT at the Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland with Pastor Rich Blanchette officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Friday April 28, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM MT at the Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland, Kansas.

Sara Jane Veselik

veselik-pic Longtime Kanorado, Kansas, resident Sara Jane Veselik, 72, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society-Sherman County in Goodland, KS.

Sara was born on July 1, 1944 in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Floyd G. and Anna K. (Sweigart) Lorah. She was one of four children. She graduated from Calico High School in 1962 in Denver, Pennsylvania. She then went on and got her nursing degree from Reding Nursing School graduating in 1965.

On March 20, 1970, she married John Marshall Veselik in Sterling, Colorado. To this union, one daughter Valerie was born. In 1970, Sara and John moved to Kanorado. It was at this time that she began working as a Registered Nurse for the Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital in Burlington, Colorado for 3 years. After that time, she began working for the Sherman County Health Department, as well as for NWKS Hospice. She also worked for the Kansas Highway Patrol as an inspections officer at the Port of Entry in Kanorado for 12 years, retiring in 2012.

After retirement she enjoyed fishing, going gambling in Black Hawk, kaleidoscopes, reading, traveling and spending time with her family. She was also a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Goodland.
Preceding her in death were her parents, and one nephew Mark Lorah.

She is survived by her husband John of Kanorado, her daughter Valerie (Robert) Jones of Broomfield, Colorado; two grandchildren Brittany and Katherine Veselik-Jones; two brothers George (Jean) Lorah in Denver, Pennsylvania and Richard (Edith) Lorah of Vienna, Virginia; and one sister Mary (Bill) Hammond of Davis, Michigan. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 10:30 AM MT at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Father Norbert Dlabal and Father Randy Weber officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

A Rosary and Vigil service will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 6:oo PM MT at the Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland.

Mollie Marie Babcock

Mollie Marie Babcock, youngest child of Frank Arthur & Effie G. (Bugbee) Babcock, was born August 1, 1929 in Phillips County, Kansas, and passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Logan Manor Nursing Home in Logan, Kansas at the age of 87.

She was raised on a farm north of Phillipsburg, attending country schools and then graduating from Phillipsburg High School in 1947.

On June 27, 1948, Mollie was united in marriage to Milo Iman in Fort Morgan, CO. To this union five children were born: John, Juanita, Daniel, Sara and Timothy. The family made their home in Glade, Kansas.

Mollie worked for several years as a telephone operator but soon realized that raising their growing family was a full-time job. She was a member of the Phillipsburg Wesleyan Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and also as President of the Women’s Missionary Society for eight years. She loved flowers, playing the piano and singing, taking walks, visiting with people and sharing the gospel.

Milo passed away in 1983 and several years later Mollie married Leland Goracke on February 2, 1986 in Loveland, CO. The couple enjoyed traveling together, making a trip to the Holy Land and other places of interest. Leland preceded her in death in 2009.

In addition to her husbands she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers & sisters, Wayne in 2003, Bonnie in 2001, Alice Mae in 1999, Eldon in 1990, Dean in 2001 and William “Bill” in 2012; and her daughter, Sara N. Iman-Hill in 1996.

Survivors include her son, John Iman & wife, Muriel of Agra, KS; daughter, Juanita Nonhoff & husband, Wayne of Phillipsburg, KS; son, Daniel Iman & wife, Linda of Tempe, AZ; son, Timothy Iman & wife, Dawn of Salina, KS; son-in-law, Herman Hill of Corvallis, Montana; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2017 in the Phillipsburg Wesleyan Church, Phillipsburg, KS, with Pastor Randy Garner officiating. Burial will follow in the Marvin Cemetery, Glade, KS.

Mrs. Iman Goracke will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Melba Rose Engel

melbaMelba Rose Engel, age 80, of Ellis, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Hays Medical Center.

She was born March 27, 1937 in Great Bend, Kansas to Rudolf K. and Inez V. (Sanders) Voss. She graduated from Mankato High School in 1955 and earned a Bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State College in 1959. On June 11, 1957 she married Eugene J. Engel in Ellis, Kansas.

Melba was a homemaker and had worked at Travinol and Adronics in Hays, Avery in Wichita, served as a substitute teacher at St. Mary’s grade school in Ellis and cooked at the Ellis Good Samaritan Center. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Ellis Daughters of Isabella joining in 1961, Ellis Meal Site helper, and she was involved in the Ellis Sunflower 4H club. She enjoyed Reading, Sewing, Bingo, Playing cards and puzzles.

She is survived by six daughters, Charla (Randy) Shultz of Rochester, MN, Caylia Shandrick of Thornton, CO, Christa (Les) Kinderknecht of Hays, Creta LaBarge and fiancé, Brad Leiker of Ellis, Chonda (Joe) Rosario of Belleville, NJ, and Candra (Stan) Stelmach of Trophy Club, TX; a son, Carl (Carissa) Engel of Wichita; a brother, Ken (Billie) Voss of Vancouver, WA; a sister, Karen Grossman of Larned, KS; 19 grandchildren, Allison (Brandon) Smith, Cheyenne Shultz, Madeline (Aaron) Logan, Frankie Shandrick, Scott (Sarah) Kinderknecht, Ally (Eric) Tucker, Shawna LaBarge (fiancé Ryan Remer), Shayla Luea, Jr. LaBarge Sondra (Tony) Huffman, Joey, Jonathan and Jace Rosario, Kirstin (Christopher) Arndt, Karissa Stelmach, Brett, Brody and Bryce Engel; 13 great grandchildren, Alexis and Jordan Logan, Adley and Owen Kinderknecht, Zade Tucker, Brevin LaBarge, Bryson Luea, Malia, Jackson, Luke, Keegan and Kenley Huffman and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene Engel; infant daughter, Shirley Engel and a son-in-law, Frank Shandrick and a grandson, Paul Joseph Kinderknecht.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 28, 2017 at 2 PM with a rosary service at 1:30 PM all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Inurnment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Earl V. Brenner

earl-brennerEarl V. Brenner, 93, Hays, died Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Via Christi Village in Hays.

He was born February 4, 1924 on the family farm near McCracken, Kansas the son of Leo James and Ina (Fitzgerald) Brenner. He was a graduate of McCracken High School and attended Fort Hays State University.

On February 3, 1948 he was united in marriage to Corrine L. Janke at St. Mary’s Church in McCracken. They celebrated nearly sixty years of marriage prior to her preceding him in death on November 29, 2007. Earl was a farmer and rancher and from an early age he appreciated the beauty of the fields and pastures and fostered a love for cattle. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Ellis Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #2133, the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and the Sunflower Polka Club. He enjoyed helping as an usher at funerals for many years at St. Joseph Catholic Church, fishing with friends and family, and dancing polkas and listening to polka music.

Survivors include two sons; Lowell Brenner and wife Christine of Coats, Kansas, and Lance Brenner and wife Michelle of Ellis, Kansas, two daughters; Laytha Gnad and husband Michael of Hays, and Linda Lichtenwaldt and husband Tom of Tehachapi, CA, a daughter-in-law; Kathleen Brenner of Hays, two sisters; Ruth Houfman of Hutchinson and Marie Brack of LaCrosse, sixteen grandchildren; Heidi Goff and husband Chane, Shannon Gnad and wife Jessica, Robin Lovewell and husband Tom, Brandy Ochs and husband EJ, Matt Brenner and wife Mandy, Dave Brenner and wife Stacey, Mitch Brenner and wife Cindy, Adam Brenner and wife Mindy, Lucas Lichtenwaldt and wife Marie, Marshall Lichtenwaldt and wife Alecia, Dustin Brenner and wife Luwana, Jesse Brenner, Josie Conkle and husband Sean, Jed Brenner and wife Chelsie, Alesha Brenner and fiance Chris Redding, and Brendon Brenner, thirty nine great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Corrine, a son; Larry Brenner in 2014, a grandson; Jeffery Allen Brenner, and a great-grandson; Christian Lichtenwaldt.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, April 28, 2017 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 215 W. 13th, Hays. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Friday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. The Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 pm until 6:30 on Thursday at the funeral home. A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 followed by a combined Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00, both on Thursday at the funeral home.

Loraine K. Hammeke

She was born in Windthorst, KS, on July 14, 1918 to William and Mary Hornung Torline. She married Melvin F. Hammeke on September 8, 1943 in Windthorst. She was a homemaker and farmer near Belpre.

Survivors include four sons, Michael (Patricia) Hammeke, Marshfield, WI, Kenneth (Orena) Hammeke, Larned, Thomas (Sharon) Hammeke, Milwaukee, WI, and David (Kathy) Hammeke, Belpre; a daughter, Susan (Jim) Werth, Hays; a sister-in-law, Maxine Herman, Larned; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, and a son, Paul, six brothers (Lawrence, Francis, Raymond, Meinrad, Vincent and William) and two sisters (Helen and Alberta (Sister Esther)).

Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday with family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Belpre Catholic Cemetery, Belpre.

Tommy Wayne Betz

Tommy Wayne Betz, 67 went home to Jesus and wife Penny on April 24, 2017. He was born October 27, 1949, to Dewayne and Henrietta (Dechant) Betz.

Tom married Penny Irvin on August 24, 1969. They made their home on a farm South of Bazine for many years where he loved living in the country, farming, ranching, and all forms of agriculture. They moved to Dalhart, Texas, to convert a part of the XIT Ranch into irrigated farm. After years of farming in Texas the couple moved to Arizona to assist with expanding the Arizona Pistachio Nursery. They returned to their beloved home South of Bazine to be closer to family. Although Tom’s greatest joys in life were farming with his wife and children and being a grandfather he had a solution for any problem brought to him by family, friends, and neighbors. He was always selfless with his time when it came to helping people. He was a member of Faith Fellowship Community Church south of their home.

Tom is survived by sons: Stacey of Ellis, KS; Cory and wife Lynette, children Evan and Evangelyn of Hays; and daughter: Jennifer Angell, children Emily and Brayden of Hays, KS; brother: Denny Betz and wife Janet of Celina, TX; and sister: Michelle Boos of Rogers, AR.

Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, Friday, April 27 from 1 – 9 P.M. Family will be present from 6 – 8 P.M.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the Bazine Cemetery on Saturday, April 28, 2017, 10:30 A.M.

He was preceded in death by his wife Penny, brothers Larry and Roy, and his parents. Tom has been cremated per his wishes.

Lois M. Bryant

She was born on February 17, 1921 in Dighton, Kansas, the daughter of Virgil Frank and Zuma Fern Dodge Sharp. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1973 moving from Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, she was a Co-Farmer of Bryant Farms, homemaker a mother extraordinaire.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas and The Gideons Auxiliary.

On November 30, 1941 she married Clarence W. Bryant in Dighton, Kansas. He survives.

Gerald E. Brown

Gerald E. Brown, passed away Friday, April 21, 2017, at Trego County Lempke Memorial Hospital. He was 82 years of age. Gerald was born September 10, 1934, in the town of Brownell, to Jesse and Amelia (Keil) Brown.

Upon graduation from Utica High School, Gerald worked for his dad on the farm until being drafted in the Army. After proudly serving our country, Gerald farmed in Trego County for the remaining years of his life. He loved farming, reading, hunting, nature and taking drives in the country.

Gerald will be dearly missed by friends and family. He is survived by his sister Janelda Harkness of Ness City; a number of nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Keith D. Brown and two sisters Jessie (Jean) Schoshke and Wilma J. Hopkins.

A private family service will be held at the Brownell Cemetery, with inurnment to follow.

screen-shot-2017-04-24-at-12-23-28-pmTerrance (Terry) Lane Antenen, age 79, passed away April 23, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital, St. Francis Campus, Wichita, Kansas. He was born on September 19, 1937 in LaCrosse, Kansas the son of Durward and Velma (Reinhardt) Antenen of Bazine.

Terry was a rancher and cattleman. He was raised in the First Baptist Church of Bazine and later a member of the First Baptist Church of El Dorado.

He married Gayle Coppoc in Larned, Kansas on August 23, 1958.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle of the home; daughters, Kathy and her husband Terry Rebel of Great Bend, Lori Hildreth of El Dorado; son, Lane and his wife Cyndee of Angleton, TX; grandkids, Jeremy Antenen, Garrett and Rebecca Rebel, Ty and Melissa Rebel, Whitney (Hildreth) and Tom Carruthers, Lindsey Hildreth, and Cory and Sara Hildreth; great grandchildren Wes, Connor, and Adalynn Rebel, Jaxon and Knox Rebel, Eli and Emma Carruthers, and Emerson Hildreth; brother, Alan and LaDonna Antenen and sister, Dixie and Duane Stenzel.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Mickey Lee.

Family visitation at Fitzgerald Funeral Home,Ness City on Tuesday, April 25 from 6-8 p.m. Graveside funeral service at Crandall Cemetery, Bazine on Wed., April 26, 11:00 a.m.
