Ethel Jean Woofter

Ethel Jean Woofter, 92, Colby, died Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Holmes Lake Manor, Lincoln, NE. She was born June 18, 1924 in Junction City, KS to Joseph and Jesse (Ackard) Schonberner.

She married Duane Woofter on September 25th, 1941 and they celebrated their 75th anniversary last fall. They were proud to be residents of Colby most of their life until their move to Lincoln to be closer to family. She was a homemaker and enjoyed many activities over the years, including square dancing, playing bridge, preparing large family dinners and especially watching her children and grandchildren perform or compete in various activities. She rarely missed a wrestling match. Ethel Jean and Duane belonged to the same pinochle club for over fifty years. Her legacy was being the best mother, grandmother and great-grandmother possible.

Survivors include her husband Duane, now living in Lincoln, NE, son Dennis (Sheila) Woofter of New Market, MD, daughter Glenda (Jim) Bade of Lincoln, NE, son John (Dorothy) Woofter of Wichita, KS and son Wayne (Gera Lou) Woofter of Hays, KS. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Susan Woofter. Ethel Jean had twelve grandchildren and twenty three great grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 29th at Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel, 745 S. Country Club Dr, Colby, KS 67701. Family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:00 the morning of the service. Burial will follow in Beulah Cemetery, Colby.

Memorials, in place of flowers, are suggested to the Thomas County Community Foundation for the benefit of the Colby High School Wrestling program, in care of the funeral home so they may be acknowledged.

Shirley J. Conaway

Kensington resident Shirley J. Conaway passed away, Friday, April 21, 2017 at the Long Term Care in Smith Center, KS at the age of 81.

She was born March 15, 1936 in Phillipsburg, KS the daughter of Roy W. & Lala (Woods) White. She worked as an accountant with KN Energy for nearly 40 years.

She was united in marriage to Edward D. “Porky” Conaway on May 4, 1956 in Phillipsburg. He preceded her in death in 1998.

She was also preceded by her parents; brother, Donald White; brother-in-law, Eugene Romjue; & a niece, Paula Gall.

Survivors include her sister, Marlene Romjue of Priairie View, KS; sister’s-in-law, Wilda Conaway & husband, Paul of Kensington and Laura White of Luling, LA; nephews, Craig Romjue Prairie View, KS, Troy Conaway of Kensington & Glen White of Lafayette, LA; nieces, Marla Persinger of Norton, KS, Carla McCoy of Colby, KS, Kathy Tilton of Dayton, OH & Denise Forsina of Lafayette, LA; and many great nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 25th, 2017 in the United Church of Kensington, Kensington, KS, with Pastor Emily Blank officiating. Burial will follow in the Germantown Cemetery, Smith County, KS.

She will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Caroline Dreher

screen-shot-2017-04-24-at-8-03-10-amCaroline Dreher, age 82, of Plainville, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017 in Plainville. She was born December 7, 1934 in LaCrosse, Kansas to Joe and Anna (Wasinger) Jacobs. She married Edwin “Eddie” J. Dreher on August 6, 1951.

Caroline was a proud homemaker who truly enjoyed cooking for family and friends who always insisted you have seconds and would get them for you if you didn’t. She also enjoyed little babies and anytime any were around she would have to hold them and squeeze their cheeks. Her true joy was her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella both of Plainville.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Eddie Dreher of Plainville; three sons and their families, Ed Dreher Jr. and wife Evangeline of Plainville and their two daughters, Shanna Vanalstine and husband Rene of Arizona and Nichole Berry and husband Ty of Hays; Frank Dreher and wife Katrina of Corpus Christi and their two children, Nola Bridgens of Corpus Christi and Jameson Dreher of Oklahoma City; Joe Dreher and wife Melissa and children Jordan and Dayton all of Oberlin; a daughter, Carol Rozean and her family, Mandy Meyers and husband Kory and Travis Rozean and wife Jill all of Hays; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Dreher of Hays and her family, Kyle Dreher of Kansas City and Jamie Grooms and husband Devin of Hays; three sisters, Delores Ice of Stockton, Janice Fetterolf of Hays and Shirley Terry of Oklahoma and three brothers, Joe Jacobs of Dodge City and John and Robert Jacobs of Hays as well as 17 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Richard Dreher, a son-in-law, Doug Rozean; a grandchild, Jessica Dreher; three sisters, Mary Ann Martin, Betty Axelson, and Norma Jean Starforth; a step sister, Gerry Fiddler and two brothers, Jim and Tom Jacobs.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday April 25, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville with burial to follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday 5 PM-7 PM with a combined parish vigil and rosary service at 6 PM all at the church. Melba Rose Engel, age 80, of Ellis, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Hays Medical Center.

Gerald E. Brown

Gerald E. Brown, passed away Friday, April 21, 2017, at Trego County Lempke Memorial Hospital. He was 82 years of age. Gerald was born September 10, 1934, in the town of Brownell, to Jesse and Amelia (Keil) Brown.

Upon graduation from Utica High School, Gerald worked for his dad on the farm until being drafted in the Army. After proudly serving our country, Gerald farmed in Trego County for the remaining years of his life. He loved farming, reading, hunting, nature and taking drives in the country.

Gerald will be dearly missed by friends and family. He is survived by his sister Janelda Harkness of Ness City; a number of nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Keith D. Brown and two sisters Jessie (Jean) Schoshke and Wilma J. Hopkins.

A private family service will be held at the Brownell Cemetery, with inurnment to follow.

Gerald E. Brown, age 82, of WaKeeney, passed away Friday, April 21, 2017 at Trego County Hospital, WaKeeney.

Glen D. Holcomb

Lifelong Sharon Springs, Kansas, resident Glen D. Holcomb, 65, passed away on April 18, 2017 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Glen was born on July 19, 1951 in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado to Carl O. and Gladys M. (Goodwin) Holcomb. He was one of four children.

Glen grew up and attended school in Sharon Springs, graduating from Sharon Springs High School in 1969. He then went on and attended Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland for two years where he obtained a degree in Carpentry. Shortly after, in 1974, Glen started his own construction business.

Glen was a member of the Gateway to Grace Church in Sharon Springs. He had a love for miniature woodworking. Later in life, Glen farmed alongside his brother Ron.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother Gerald and a niece Melinda Cutright Stephens.

He is survived by his brother Ron Holcomb, and his sister Alice (Dan) Cutright, all of Sharon Springs. He is also survived by three nephews Mervin (Lisa) Cutright and their children of Sheridan, Wyoming, Mike (Sonja) Cutright and their children of Casper, Wyoming, and Mahlon Cutright and his children of Stanwood, Washington; five great nieces, two great nephews and one on the way.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 10:00 AM MT at the Sharon Springs Cemetery with Pastor Rick Dewees officiating. There was no visitation.

Melody A. Blake

Melody A. Blake, 63, of Russell, Kansas died on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in the emergency room at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Melody was born on March 04, 1954, in Troy, Missouri, the daughter of Champ Clark Kitson, Jr. and Carol (Bell). She grew up and attended school in Troy, Missouri. She was united in marriage to Thomas E. Blake on April 02, 2000 in Byers, Colorado. She worked for Klema’s grocery as a cashier for the last few month. She enjoyed working in the yard, collecting knick knacks, milking cows, an animal lover and loving the Lord. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Thomas E. Blake of the home, mother Carol Cook and husband Edgar of Philadelphia, Tennessee; sons James Crawford of Russell and Christopher Crawford and wife Danielle of Aurora, Colorado; brother Joe Jacob of Philadelphia, Tennessee and sister Maxine Schoenherr of Philadelphia, Tennessee and two grandchildren Bobby & Johnny Crawford.

She was preceded in death by her father , daughter Vanessa Hutchins and brother Dana Kitson.

Alfred Joseph Walters

He was born June 14, 1933 in Catharine, Kansas to Alois and Dorothea (Meis) Walters. He married Erma Lee Gabel in Munjor, Kansas on May 2, 1959. Together, they enjoyed 42 blessed and happy years in marriage before she preceded him in death on June 24, 2001.

He was a retired banker working for Security Pacific Bank. He was a US Navy veteran serving in the Korean War aboard the USS Skagit. He was a member of St. Francis Church, 4th degree Knights of Columbus, The American Legion and the VFW. Alfred was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast.

He is survived by a daughter, Lee Ann Hendricks and husband Troy of Wichita; a son, Alan Walters and wife Deborah of Chicago; grandchildren, Thomas Hendricks and wife Jennifer of Wichita, Emily Manning and husband Paul of Wichita, Alexis Walters and Luke Walters of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters Hilaria McGuire, Marcellus Walter, Albert Walter, Alvin Walter, Seraphin Walter, Richard Walter, Leona Schwarzenberger, Aloysius Walters, Eleanore Marzano, Archibald Walters, Cecilia Basgall and Lorraine Wasinger.

Funeral services will be 10 AM on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor, Kansas. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW Honor Guard.

Jerry L. Smith

He was born on August 12, 1929 in Moran, Kansas, the son of Andrew Raymond Smith and Sarah Elizabeth Geneva.

Jerry attended and graduated from the Kansas University School of Law. He also played on the KU Jayhawk Mens Basketball team.

He has been a resident of Tribune, Kansas since 2002, having moved from Flagstaff, Arizona.

He was a member of the Elks, VFW, Rotary, Trial Lawyers Association, Arizona Bar, Kansas Bar, Coconino County Sheriff Possey, the Coconino County Attorney Association, and the First United Methodist Church of Tribune.

On June 16, 1951 he married Elinor Rice in Wichita, Kansas. She survives.

Virgiline (Duell) Amos

amos-picVirgiline (Duell) Amos was born September 12, 1922 in Goodland, Kansas, the daughter of Bernhard and Frances (Hogeboom) Duell, and died April 17, 2017 in Goodland, Kansas. She grew up on the family farm north of Ruleton and attended grade school and high school at the Ruleton Consolidated School, graduating in 1940.

After graduation, she worked at the Sherman County AAA office (now known as the FSA office). She was married to Lyman Amos on March 26, 1943 at the home of her parents, north of Ruleton. While her husband was in the Army and overseas, she taught in a country school for 1 ½ years. After his discharge from the Army, they were engaged in farming until his failing health made it necessary to give up farming. The family then moved to Goodland in 1958 and Virgiline was employed as secretary of the Goodland United Methodist Church from 1959 until her retirement in 1990.

While retired, she most enjoyed spending her time with family and friends, traveling, quilting, playing the piano (by ear), gardening and putting together jigsaw puzzles.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, three brothers, Floyd Duell, Paul Duell and Roy Duell, a sister Vera Kittel and a great grandson Joseph Parker.

She is survived by her four children; Dianne (Doyl) Merz, Goodland, KS; Ronald (Kathy) Amos , Mound City, MO; Danny (Karen) Amos , Nixa, MO; Linda (Walter) Linthacum, Goodland, KS. She is also survived by her grandchildren Steven (Melissa) Merz, Kevin (Rhawnie) Merz, Roger (Malissa) Amos, Suzanne (Tim) Arnold, Kati (Darin) Curts, Lexi Amos, Chandra (Curtis) Parker and Devin Bliss; step grandchildren Lane Linthacum, and Lea Ann Studer; great grandchildren Robert Merz, Amy McDonald, Kortney and Nicholas Amos, Alex and Denea Lyddon, Brooke, Ryan and Megan Parker.

Lois Joan Hepner

screen-shot-2017-04-20-at-12-52-22-pmLois Joan Hepner, 80, born July 30, 1936, near Jennings, Kansas, was the second oldest of six children of Joe and Leona (Allen) Kaspar. Lois passed away on March 14, 2017.

Her father and a nephew, precedes her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Hepner; mother, Leona Kaspar of La Crosse, Ks; sisters, Carol Cook, Norma Hahn (Louis), Arlis Koerner (Jim), Joleene Younger (Frank); brother, Allan Kaspar (June), sisters-in­-law, Mary (Jim), Jodee (Max); and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members.

She was a 1954 graduate of Jennings High School and a 1962 graduate of Fort Hays State University. Bob invites family and friends to celebrate Lois’s life during a service on Friday, April 28, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church in Prescott, Ariz.

Monica Jean Wilson

screen-shot-2017-04-20-at-8-44-00-amMonica Jean Wilson, daughter of Royce Earl & Jean Ann (Quinn) Wilson, was born March 13, 1972 in Norton, Kansas and passed away April 18, 2017 at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas at the age of 45.

She attended Northern Valley schools, graduating with the high school class of 1990. She continued her education at Clemson University and then graduated in 1996 from the University of Nebraska in Kearney with a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree.

Her teaching career began at the Lenora Grade School in 1998 where she taught 4th & 5th grade for 3 years. In 2001 she then returned to her high school at Northern Valley where she taught for many years, and later taught 4th grade at Northern Valley Elementary for 8 years. In addition to teaching, Monica coached Track and Volleyball and was a Yearbook Sponsor and Scholar Bowl Sponsor. She was also an active member of the Almena Congregational Church in Almena, KS.

In her free time Monica enjoyed snuggling with her cats, golfing, and watching sports, especially KU basketball.

Monica also loved traveling with her sister, Marty. In addition to several trips of their own, the “entrepreneurs” helped arrange several tours to locations outside the United States, which took them to many places throughout Europe.

Some of Monica’s favorite times were spent with her nieces and nephews, attending their school programs and sporting events. She was lovingly known as “Aunt Mo” to all of them, and was always their biggest fan as well as a trusted friend.

Her presence will be deeply missed by all of her family & friends as well as her students.

She was preceded in death by her father, Royce Wilson; father-in-law, Harold Riemann; aunt, Jo Murphy; and nephew, Daniel Riemann.

Survivors include the “love of her life”, David Riemann, of the home in Norton, KS; her mother, Jean Ann Wilson of Almena, KS; her sister, Marty Wolfe & husband, Charlie, of Republican City, NE; her brother, Matthew Wilson & wife, Kim, of Garner, IA; mother-in-law, Joan Riemann of Norton, KS; and brother-in-law, Kevin Riemann & wife, Melissa Seacat of Lyndon, KS. Also surviving are her nieces & nephews: Cristee Sharpnack (Nick); Kai & Carson Wolfe; Katelyn, Tyler, and Sidney Wilson; Alex Riemann (Katie); Wesley Riemann (Kasie); Leah Cook (Tyler); Madelyn Montgomery; great-nieces, Zoe, Skyler & Lexi Sharpnack; Sydney Riemann; aunts and uncles, C.A. & Dana Quinn and Roger & Rayleen Wilson, along with many other relatives.

Cremation was planned. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Northern Valley High School Auditorium, Almena, KS, with Pastors Kirk Kasson & Roger Wilson officiating.
Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS 67661. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for visitation Friday evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
